Dear Readers

Welcome to the 17th Issue of “KMC Times”. This Newsletter not only mirrors vision and mission of this college but also highlights its events, activities, academic prowess and achievements. It tries to cover and record the range of activities of the college on a quarterly basis. I request the readers to go through it and provide constructive feedback for its further growth.

KMC is sincerely committed to serve humanity through medical education and patient care. We rededicate ourselves to sincere, continued untiring eff orts to maintain the great traditions of medical profession and welcome all who aspire to become the doctors and nurses of tomorrow in an environment conducive to greater achievements created by our faculties.

KMC has qualifi ed faculty members having vast teaching experience and strong academic backgrounds. The library is well equipped and updated with books plus national and international Journals. Students are happy and enthusiastic in their classes & in laboratories. Our college has always been trying its best to maintain itself as a modern facilities center for producing competent medical professionals needed to respond to the requirements of the society as well as the nation.

We try our best to abide by the rules and regulations of Kathmandu University (KU) and Nepal Medical Council (NMC). We follow the curriculum of KU which emphasizes the acquisition of knowledge, understanding, critical thinking, and problem-solving

abilities for all students attending our college. We believe that every student is unique and special and that each has the ability to learn. We believe it is our responsibility as educators to nurture and develop every student to prepare him/her for life. Students are continually encouraged to prepare themselves to appreciate and serve not only our diverse community but also international community by becoming global citizens.

We value the importance of trust, respect, innovation and a sense of community. We know that the development of the college over the past few years has been signifi cant. The future will build on these fi rm foundations focusing on the quality of education, especially for the benefi t of our students. Recent News

Intensive Care, Emergency Medicine, Blood and Blood TransfusionThe Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care organized a two day refresher course on “Intensive Care, Emergency Medicine, Blood and Blood Transfusion” on December 14-15, 2018. This course is conducted every six months at KMCTH as per the “Committee for European Education in Anaesthesiology (CEEA)” guidelines. The programme was inaugurated by KMC Principal Prof. Chanda Karki along with Prof. Damodar Pokhrel, the CEO, Prof. Mukund Raj Joshi, Director, Prof. Sabina Bhattarai, Vice Principal and Prof. Shyam Krishna Maharjan, acting HOD, Department of Anaesthesiology. The course director for the programme was Prof. Baburaja Shrestha. Several renowned anaesthesiologists, national as well as international, participated as resource persons. An international speaker from Pakistan also participated. A total of 47 residents from diff erent faculties and hospitals across the country were present. KU Dean Prof. Dr. Rajendra Koju, and Prof. Chanda Karki attended the closing ceremony and certifi cates were distributed to the participants by Prof. Dr. Rajendra Koju. The next refresher course is scheduled to be held on May 31- June 1, 2019 on “Neurology, Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Management”.

Intensive Course on Obstetric EmergenciesThe Department of Obs/Gyn conducted a simulation based “Intensive Course on Obstetric Emergencies” workshop on 22-23 November, 2018 in collaboration with Asian and Oceanic Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Nepal Health Training Centre with the technical support from Obstretical and Gynaecological Society of Malaysia. A team of 8 Malaysian Obstetrician and Gynaecologists conducted this training at KMC and a total of 24 Obstetricians and Gynaecologists from all over the country benefi tted from this workshop.

Dissemination Conference on Addressing Domestic Violence in Antenatal Care Environment (ADVANCE) studyThe Addressing Domestic Violence in Antenatal Care Environment (ADVANCE) study is a collaborative project between the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Norway, KMC, and KUSMS.The ADVANCE study team includes the following research partners: Prof. Berit Schei (Principal Investigator-PI, Norway), Prof. Dr. Rajendra Koju (Dean KUSMS and Local PI, Dhulikhel Hospital), Prof. Dr. Sunil Kumar Joshi (Local PI, KMC), Johan Håkon Bjørngaard, Elisabeth Darj, Jennifer J. Infanti, Mirjam Lukasse, Ragnhild Lund (NTNU), Dr. Poonam Rishal, Kunta Devi Pun, Dr. Kumudu Wijewardene, Dr. Dinusha Chamanie Perera, Dr. Mohamed Munas Mohamed Muzrif (University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka); Katarina Swahnberg (Linnæus University Kalmar, Sweden); and Jacquelyn C. Campbell (Johns Hopkins University, USA).The international dissemination seminar was conducted on 2nd October 2018 to share the results of the ADVANCE study research, and provide recommendations to address domestic violence in health care settings, with a special focus on antenatal care and to build and reinforce networks and linkages among various stakeholders.The conference was inaugurated by Minister of Women, Children and Senior Citizen Hon. Ms. Tham Maya Thapa with the formal session which was chaired by Prof. Dr. Damodar Prasad Pokhrel, CEO-KMC. Other distinguished guests were Members of Parliament Hon. Ms. Anjana Bisankhe and Hon. Ms. Sarita Neupane, Prof. Dr. Rajendra Koju (Dean KUSMS), Dr. Usha Jha (Member-NPC), Mr. Anil Yadav (Secretary- National Women Commission) and Mr. Jhalak Sharma Paudel, Director, National Health Training Centre. The meeting also focused on how gender mainstreaming can be done into the curriculum for medical studies. As a part of the dissemination of the study fi ndings, a seminar was organized at the KMC Sinamangal for the interested faculties, PG residents, doctors, nurses, staff and interns.

Workshop on Grant Writing and Digitalization for Cardiovascular Health Research

KMC, in collaboration with University of Skövde, organized a four day two-part workshop titled “Grant writing and Digitalization for Cardiovascular Health Research in Low-resource Settings” at KMC Sinamangal from 26th to 29th Nov. 2018.The workshop, held under the Swedish Research Links Grant, was logistically supported by the Training and Research sub-committees of Med. Edu. Dept. of KMC, and post-graduate students of the Dept. of Com Med. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Prof. Dr. Damodar Pokhrel, Prof. Dr. Chanda Karki, Prof. Dr. Hemang Dixit, Prof. Dr. Damber Bahadur Karki; and other authorities from KMC.The sessions were facilitated by experts in the fi eld of grant writing, digitalization and cardiovascular health research. The

fi rst part of the workshop on grant writing was mainly facilitated by Dr. Mats Rydehell from Univ. Skövde, Sweden and the second on digitalization by Prof. Alexandra Krettek, Assoc. Prof. Gabriele Eiben, and Prof. Per Backlund (online) of Univ. of Skövde, Dr. Natalia Oli of KMC; and Prof. Madhusudan Subedi of Patan Academy of Health Sciences. The workshops were coordinated by Prof. Dr. Abhinav Vaidya - the main international applicant of the Swedish Research Links Grant from the Swedish Research Council, and Dr. Natalia Oli - the Principal Investigator of the HARDIC project. There were a total of 55 participants, among which 26 participated in part one of the workshop and 29 in part two. The sessions were very thought-provoking and interactive.

With the objective of building the capacity and enabling sustainability of Nepal Injury Research Centre, a 6-day training programme was organized on Data Governance and Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) from 28th October to 2nd November, 2018 at NIRC, KMC, Duwakot. Around 50 participants attended either the basic or intensive training which consisted of diverse participants like NIRC core team, Collaborating partners, KMC doctors and faculties, Ministry of Health and Population, University Grant Commission. The sessions mainly focused on delivering basic knowledge on Data governance and use of REDCap for data collection. Data Governance is a data management concept concerning the capability that enables an organization that high data quality exists throughout the complete lifecycle of data. The key focus of data governance is availability, usability, security and integrity of data. Meanwhile, REDCap is a web-based application that is specifi cally designed for electronic capture

of cand research data. The application supports entire data life cycle, i.e. from collection to preparation for analyses and archiving.

Message from the Medical DirectorWelcome to the 17th issue of KMC Times. Kathmandu Medical College Teaching Hospital (KMCTH) continues to grow both at Sinamangal, Kathmandu and Duwakot, Bhaktapur. The range of services provided via the various medical and dental specialities at both places/sites improving day by day. Emergency services provided by KMCTH has been regarded by our clients as exemplary. Services, dedication and hard work of the all KMC faculty and staff are highly appreciable. With the increasing requirement of patients and students, the workload of all staff will defi nitely continue to increase. All staff members are requested to improve the services and care provided to patients. Though KMCTH has established itself as a major hospital in Nepal, it needs to reach greater heights. This can only be achieved by the goodwill of individuals as well as

the combined eff orts of all KMC staff plus the guidance of all well wishers of KMCTH. All patients, past and present students, service providers as well as local communities, both in Sinamangal and Duwakot have a major role in this.It is essential to have a platform to communicate and document the services provided by informing about all of our activities. It is mandatory that KMC Times as an offi cial newsletter has to continue to be such a platform.

The Golden Minute HBB (HELPING BABIES BREATHE) Training

Departments of Paediatrics, Obstetrics/Gynaecology and Nursing Department jointly conducted numbers of HBB training program from June to December 2018. The aim of this training was to provide basic knowledge regarding newborn care along with development of bag and mask ventilation skills. Till now fi ve training sessions have been conducted successfully with the participation of doctors and nurses from various departments of KMCTH (Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, OT, Emergency and Cabin) as well as from other hospital (Bhaktapur Hospital).

Report from Mortality Review CommitteeMortality Review committee has organized a session of mortality case presentation with discussion on a mortality case of Medicine Department on 14th August 2018. Dr. Hema Chand presented the case which was followed by very good interaction regarding case management. The case was found to be well managed.

World COPD day celebrated at KMCTH World COPD day was celebrated on 22 Nov 2018 at KMCTH Sinamangal. Programme was organized by Department of Internal Medicine KMCTH and was Chaired by HoD of Department of Medicine.

Public hearing on the “Eff ect of Environment Assessment” held at KMC Sinamangal and DuwakotA public hearing on the “Eff ect of Environment Assessment” were held by KMC at Sinamangal on 7th October and at Duwakot on 9th October.

MBBS Internship orientation programmeAn internship orientation programme for the 17th Batch of MBBS students was held on 9th October at Sinamangal. Acting Principal Prof. Sabeena Bhattarai, Prof. Dr. D B Karki, Prof. Dr. Mukunda R Joshi, Prof. Dr. Om K Malla, Prof. Dr. Sabina Shrestha and Matron Ranjana Chhetri delivered their presentation/messages during the programme.

Workshop on ‘Emergency & Trauma Care Training Course for Frontline Health Providers’

Department of Neurosurgery in association with Surgery, Anaesthesia and Radiology conducts KUTLS workshop This year the seventh edition of KMCTH Ultrasound Trauma Life Support was held at KMC, Sinamangal on 29th November. Faculties from Depts of Surgery, Neurosurgery and Anaesthesia from KMC as well as faculties from Patan Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS) gave didactic lectures as well guided the participants through the hands-on session. This workshop which was organized by Society of Surgeons of Nepal (SSN) on their 25th anniversary XIV international meeting as a pre-conference workshop, was attended by 32 surgeons and resident trainees from surgery and orthopaedics. The seats were limited in number to give adequate hands-on experience to the participants. Hands-on sessions on standardised patients as well on chicken model was enjoyed by the participants. This workshop had NMA accreditation and participants were awarded 4 points. Pre and post workshop tests of the participants showed good attainment of knowledge. Participant feedback was very encouraging.

Department of Neurosurgery participates in XIV international meeting of SSNOn the occasion of 25th anniversary of establishment of Society of Surgeons of Nepal (SSN), SSN organised its XIV international meeting in Kathmandu from 30th November and 1st December with a theme “Ensuring safe Surgical Practice”. Dr Amit Thapa presented on “Safe neurosurgical procedures: facts, fi ction and future”. Dr. Bikram Shakya presented his research work on “Topical use of Vancomycin in craniotomies”.

A two days workshop on ‘Emergency & Trauma Care Training Course for Frontline Health Providers’ was conducted at KMCTH, Sinamanal by the Emergency Medical Service San

Antonia (US) and the Department of General Practice and Emergency Medicine, KMCTH on 12th and 13th November 2018.

KMC has signed a MoU with Bredent Group, Germany to open an Dental Implantology Centre at KMC - Dental College and Hospital, Duwakot. The centre will conduct implant training courses and also provide single and multiple implant services to patients. Dental College and Hospital expresses gratitude to KMC Chairperson, Rabendra Raj Pandey, KMC Board Members, CEO Prof. Dr. Damodar Pokhrel and Principal Prof. Dr. Chanda Karki for their constant support for the same and look forward to developing dental implant education and services at KMC.

KMC Professor presents research result at National Conference on Genetic Diseases

Multi Specialty Health Camp held at Humla in coor dination with KMCTHProfessional Support Service Nepal organized a three day free health camp at Bargaun of Humla at an altitude of 3330 meters from 27th-29th October, 2018 with technical support from KMC, Sinamangal. A total of 330 patients received free check up and medicines.Eye examination of 286 patients was done with provision of medicines and also presbyopic glasses. Twenty two patients with cataract were diagnosed and referred for the upcoming surgical eye camp to be held next month in Simikot, Humla.A total of 133 patients underwent dental examination and 25 patients had dental extraction during the camp.Two hundred and sixty three patients were examined by the physician who were provided free medicines. Similarly, 86 patients with gynaecological problems as well as paediatric patients were examined by the general practitioner.Two hundred and fi fty nine patients benefi ted from physiotherapy for joint and muscular pain by the physiotherapists.

School Screening Ophthalmology camp at DhadingSchool screening programme was conducted at Dashrathchandra High School, Chhatradeurali and Mahesh Dharma High School, Jeevanpur on December 9th 2018 and December 10th 2018 jointly by the Department of Ophthalmology, KMCTH and Professional Support Service Nepal. A total of 424 patients were examined during the programme among which 383 were students and 42 were adults. 23 students with refractive errors were provided with prescription eyeglasses and students requiring medicine were provided with medications free of cost. The programme was supported by NPO Hikari Kanata Fund and Yamato Foundation, Japan.

Prof. Dr. Arti S. Pandey, Head of Department of Biochemistry, presented the results of her research at KMCTH titled "Inborn Errors of Metabolism: A cause for concern?" at the 1st National Conference on Genetic Diseases held at Pratigya Pratisthan, Kathmandu, Dec 7-8, 2018. She also presented a talk on "Variants of Uncertain Signifi cance: Lynch syndrome as an example" at the conference.

Mashiko Takeuchi, Director General, NPO Hikari Kananta Fund, delivered a lecture titled “Better visible things by blind than ordinary person” on 11th December 2018. The programme

was organized by the Department of Ophthalmology, KMCTH, in conjunction with Medical Education Department, KMCTH.

World Sight Day Celebration

Department of Ophthalmology, KMC organized an Art Competition on the occasion of World Sight Day on 8th October, 2018 at Duwakot. The programme was supported by Professional Support Service Nepal, Tripureshwor. A total of forty people participated in the competition. Medical students, dental students, nursing staff , intern doctors, residents and faculties from KMC, KU, IoM and Tilganga Eye Institute participated in the art competition. The theme given was “ Eye

care everywhere” which was the slogan of this year’s World Sight Day.From among the faculties and staff , winner was Dr. Eli Pradhan, 1st Runner up and 2nd Runner up were Manisha Pant and Dr. Alina Sapkota respectively. Similarly, from among the students, winner was Sudikchya Maharjan, 1st runner up and 2nd runner up were Subij Shakya and Brajesh Shrestha respectively. Winners were awarded the prizes and all participants received certifi cates.

Genetic Disease ConferenceMr. Naveen Shreevastva, faculty member of Biochemistry participated in First National Conference on Genetic Diseases held on 7th & 8th December, 2018 at Nepal Pragya Pratisthan, Kathmandu, Nepal. He presented poster entitled

“Screening Mentally Retarded Children for Inborn Errors of Metabolism”. This conference was jointly organized by Society of Life Sciences Nepal and Decode Genomics & Research Centre.

Asia Pacifi c Vitreo Retina Society (APVRS) conferenceDr. Kiran Shakya, assistant professor at Ophthalmology Department of KMCTH presented his paper on “Inverted fl ap technique to repair idiopathic large macular Hole” at Asia Pacifi c Vitreo Retina Society (APVRS) Conference held at Seoul, Korea from 14 to 16 December 2018.

Conference participation of Pharmacology faculty members Dr. Binod Raut, Dr. Anna Acharya and Dr. Ashish Bhattarai of Department of Pharmacology participated in a CME organized by SIMON-Nepal regarding principles and rational use of antibiotics and antibiotic national action plan. The programme was held on 13th December 2018.

KMC Basic Sciences Faculty members participate in JNMA Short Course

Dr. Anna Acharya, Dr. Jyoti Prabha Bharati, Dr. Khilasha Pokhrel and Dr. Sangita Thapa participated in “JNMA short course on designing and conducting a clinical research” held every Saturday from 15th December – 19th January 2019. The workshop was organised by JNMA (Journal of Nepal Medical Association) and was held in NMA premises. The workshop was inagurated by Honorable State Minister for Health and Population, Dr. Surendra Kumar Yadav.

KMC faculty attends course on Good Clinical Laboratory Practice Dr. Jyotshna Sapkota, Assistant Professor of Microbiology attended 4th Batch Regional Course on Good Clinical Laboratory Practice conducted by Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, Indonesia 4-6 December 2018. She received TDR, WHO Grant to attend the workshop.

External Talk ProgrammeA talk programmes entitled ‘Follow Your Dreams’ was held at KMC Sinamangal on 4th November 2018. The speaker was Dr. Srishti Moktan who spoke about her journey from the Terai of Nepal to USA, Maldives and Milan of Italy.

KMC staff participate in 18th Annual Conference of Indian Society of Hospital Waste Management

A three days conference “18th Annual Conference of Indian Society of Hospital Waste Management” was held in King George Medical University, U.P. Luknow, India on 30th November to 2nd December 2018. The programme was organized by University Environment Department KGMU U.P. Lucknow. HR Manager Mr. Prakash Kumar Bhattrai, Matron Ms. Ranjana Chhettri and Housekeeping Manager Ms. Bandana Pandey participated the conference. There were altogether 16 participants from diff erent hospitals of Nepal and over 200 participants from India. The representative from diff erent medical colleges of India presented the practice of solid and liquid waste management as well as system followed in infection control in their institutions. From Nepal Mr. Mahesh Nakarmi, Managing Director of Health Care Foundation Nepal presented Practice of Solid Health Care Waste Management System in Hospital of Nepal.

Workshop on Infection PreventionOne day workshop on Infection Prevention – 2018, was organized by Dhulikhel Hospital, KU in collaboration with Seoul National University Hospital. It was held on 4th November 2018. On behalf of Infection Control Committee - KMC, the participants were Dr. Sailesh Pradhan, Dr. Jyotshna Sapkota, Ranjana Chhetri and Jaykala Ale.

KMC faculty Dr. Thapa invited to APCSS meeting as faculty speakerDuring 15th to 17th November 2018, the 12th Annual Conference of the Asia Pacifi c Cervical Spine Society (APCSS-2018) was held in New Delhi. Dr. Amit Thapa was invited as a faculty and he highlighted on his innovated “MiHem Technique” to remove tumour and cyst from within the spinal cord without creating too much instability in the spine, which mitigates use of instruments to fi x the spine. This meeting was attended by over 400 surgeons.

Nursing News

10th Batch Convocation

The students of B. Sc. Nursing 10th batch completed their 4 years of studies and came out with fl ying colours. From KMC there was 100 percent result in the KU fi nal exams. The pass out students also participated in the KU convocation held on 23rd November, 2018.

The students of 11-14th batch organized a farewell program to cherish moments spent with them wish their seniors luck. KMC wishes all the pass out students good luck for their future.

Norwegian students in KMCFour students from NTNU, Norway, Vilde Helena Fornebo, Ingrid Maehre Dyrnes, Katrine Leines and Hannah Mathilde Holsen Jahre visited KMC and started their posting in diff erent wards of KMC from 8th January, 2018. They have visited KMC under a student and teacher exchange program with NTNU, Norway. Under a similar exchange program with Linkoping University, Sweden, nursing students of KMC from 4th year, Ms. Roshani Tamang and Ms Aashisha Parajuli are currently visiting Sweden from January to March.

Free OPD service provided at KMC in remembrance of late Chairman Dr. Pushkar Nath PantThe 6th anniversary of the demise of Late Chairman Dr. Pushkar Nath Pant was observed by providing free OPD services at KMCTH, Sinamangal on 25, 26 and 27th Kartik 2075 BS (11-13 November 2018)

Fruit Distribution during DashainOn the occasion of Vijaya Dashami greetings and fruits were distributed to inpatients at KMC Sinamangal in October 2018.

Book Release by Prof. Dr. Manindra Ranjan Baral Prof. Dr. M R Baral is one of the early supporters of KMC from its initial days. He has recently brought out his autobiography which gives a detailed narrative regarding medical practice from his early days in the clinic in Jail, Bir, Kanti Hospitals including KMCTH. There are tit-bits of information about many of our political leaders too. A must read for inside information!

Miscellaneous

Students from KMCTH, who were also members of Leo Club of Kathmandu, Lazimpat, Chautari collected warm clothes from students, staff , faculty and other visitors in KMCTH. Then, they conducted "Warm clothes distribution and health camp program” at Nilkantha-4, Simara, Dhading on 5th Jan, 2019 in association with Lions Club of Kathmandu, Lazimpat, Chautari and local group of Dhading called “Nari Jagaran”. Around 100 kg of clothes were distributed to needy underprivileged people with 150 people being treated with medicines free of cost.

KMC students win silver medal in "All Nepal Medical College meet: Synapse 2018"KMC secured second place in basket ball competition in "All Nepal Medical College meet: Synapse 2018" held in BPKIHS, Dharan. Sixteen member teams participated in sports meet and took part in all the games held in the Inter Medical College meet. Team from KMC won silver medal in basket ball.
