We’re finally here!

After a major transformation of the magnificent Hawthorn Town Hall, we are so proud and enthused to bring you the inaugural season program of your new premier arts venue, Hawthorn Arts Centre.

Opening a world of possibility, reflecting the love of all things artistic and creative of our local community and beyond, we have curated a season of performances that will move you to the core, make you laugh until your cheeks ache and wow you with some of Australia’s most solid entertainers.

Drawing in the best work going around, whether you love dance, music, theatre or something with a splice of each, the opulent Main Hall Stage will present a program that speaks to all ages and backgrounds.

We’re dedicated to sharing the stories and giving a voice to our youth with quality teen and children’s programs. It’s not all serious though, some of the most fun you’ll have will be with the whole family at one of these shows!

Matinee Music will host some of the best daytime performers touring the circuit. On offer is a classic line up of names that have been sitting in the back of your memory for some time and will now grace the stage for the first time in a while. Be the first to see them back in action and why not sample a culinary treat at the Centre’s new cafe, Second Empire, before or after the performance. It’s a perfect day out with friends.

What’s inside these pages is only the beginning of what’s to come.

Featuring the Melbourne Ballet Company, Melbourne Chamber Orchestra and the stunning production of The Harbinger, Season 2 will launch in May 2014. All will leave you mesmerised. We’ve popped in a teaser so you can clear your diary early!

A thought provoking and inspiring series of public programs is also in planning and will allow you to delve deep inside the art, through workshops, talks and use of digital media.

Hawthorn Arts Centre is the new heart of the arts in Melbourne’s east and we hope it finds its place in yours.

Australian concert pianist, David Helfgott is, without doubt, one of the most recognisable classical music artists in the world today. His story is known to millions through the massive success of the Oscar winning feature film, Shine which caused his recordings, particularly of Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto, to top both the classical and pop music charts worldwide and saw him play his signature piece, The Flight Of The Bumble Bee at the Academy Awards ceremony.

His live concerts continue to be sold out and include standing ovations at Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Sydney Opera House and as part of the opening events of the newly re-furbished Hamer Hall in Melbourne.

David’s playing continues to go from strength to strength and his forthcoming performance at the Hawthorn Arts Centre forms part of a year of concerts which will also include Denmark, Istanbul, Warsaw and an extensive tour of the major recital venues in China.

After rave reviews and sell-out shows at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Brisbane’s Powerhouse, and Melbourne Comedy Theatre, Australia’s sexiest chanteuse, Rhonda Burchmore, brings Cry Me A River: The World of Julie London.

Throughout her career Burchmore has made a distinctive impression on audiences with her dazzling dance steps, superb comic timing, effervescent personality and impressive voice.

Backed by a five-piece band, Rhonda dims the lights as she slinks into the world of one of America’s most mysterious sirens, Julie London. Taking audiences to the west coast cool jazz scene of the 1950s and 1960s, she tells London’s story through a mix of sensuality and humour.

With a song list that includes some of the great tunes of the era, Burchmore teases the audience and captures London’s effortless style while showcasing some of her biggest hits. Her timeless songbook includes Cry Me A River, Let There Be Love, Saturday Night (is the Loneliest Night in the Week), ‘S Wonderful, You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To, Daddy, Black Coffee, Hello Dolly and The Party’s Over; written by legendary composers Cole Porter, Jules Styne and George & Ira Gershwin among others.

RHONDA BURCHMORE IN CRY ME A RIVER: THE WORLD OF JULIE LONDON

A comedy about a men’s anger management workshop. Pain. Regret. Tears. And that’s just the counsellors!

Geoff Paine played nice guy Clive Gibbons in the early years of Neighbours. Twenty years later his real life neighbours-from-hell proved life wasn’t like the television show. One fateful night he finally snapped, head-butting his neighbour while an onlooker sang the Neighbours theme song. True story. Arrested and ordered to attend an anger management course, Geoff discovered that the most surreal part of this tale was still to come.

Unpack This is a comedy exploring the funnier side of anger management. From the jargon riddled politically correct language, to the antics of a social worker who can’t control his temper, A hilarious and poignant show that focuses on what happens when two social workers try to show six men how to manage their anger, with varying degrees of success.

If you have ever lost your cool, blown a fuse, flown off the handle, gone through the roof, chucked a wobbly or just been plain angry. There’s almost always a funny side.

Geoff Paine has since moved house.

The renowned Zelman Memorial Symphony Orchestra will accompany three talented pianists in the 2014 Boroondara Eisteddfod’s Piano Concerto Award.

Each year over twenty talented young pianists vie for the chance to play with full orchestral accompaniment and take out the coveted title of Piano Concerto Award Champion at one Australia’s most prestigious eisteddfod contests.

Sweating hours of practice-makes-perfect, this performance will see future stars in the making covering masterpieces of the likes of Rachmaninov, Saint-Saëns, Beethoven and Brahms.

With the heats held in late April, further program information will be released and tickets available on Thursday 1 May.

Featuring over 20 smash-hit Gilbert & Sullivan songs, this show takes you on a ride through their not-so-illustrious beginnings to the popularity machine they became. With great solos, duets, trios spanning the breadth of their repertoire and seen through the eyes of the men who penned them.

Starring Australian music theatre and London West End star Philip Gould as Arthur Sullivan, hilarious veteran actor Brian Hannan as WS Gilbert, Chris McKenna as their manager, Richard D’Oyly Carte, and featuring international soprano Alison Jones as Leanora Braham, the first soprano Gilbert & Sullivan ever employed.

Gilbert & Sullivan collaborated on fourteen operas in their twenty five-year partnership, which are some of the most frequently performed operas in history.

Fast paced and full of surprises, experience all of the Gilbert & Sullivan musicals in one afternoon!

Wife and husband team Jacqui and Brenton Edgecombe – aka String Fever – are a classic mismatch of cello-toff with fiddling maniac, but they never have a fight!

This dynamic duo combine early careers in the Symphony (working with artists including Pavarotti, Ray Charles and the Beatles’ Sir George Martin) with fifteen years as full-time entertainers to present a show that is unique, classy – and most importantly – a lot of fun. Their musical roller-coaster will take you from Bluegrass to Beethoven to the Beatles; a cheeky tribute to Andre Rieu and Brenton’s unforgettable Elton John impression.

They have received 11 National Awards for their services to showbiz, including five ‘MO’ Awards, and the “Qantas Peter Allen Variety Performers of the Year”.

SIMON GALLAHER

JACKIE LOVE

After a long absence from the solo stage, Simon Gallaher returns to Victoria for his first solo performances in half a decade. Gallaher’s new show is a tribute to the great composers of the twentieth century featuring classic love songs and torch songs spanning the past fifty years and beyond.

Such a masterful vocal performance would not be the same without some greats from the musical stage and with the help from Andrew Lloyd Weber to Sigmund Romberg, this fine tenor voice will shine as never before.

Gallaher is such an endearing favourite and you won’t want to miss this special music concert as he returns to the concert stage with musical director Kevin Hocking at the piano.

Jackie Love is an Australian singer and dancing star. At an early age Love toured Australia and the United States with Sammy Davis and has since performed all over the world. She has starred in many musicals which have toured Australia including Dancing Man opposite David Atkins, Hello Dolly, Hot Shoe Shuffle and most recently Singing in the Rain opposite Todd McKenney.

Love performs her outstanding one-woman show with many great songs and stories of her fascinating career.

What on Earth is Elvis doing as a guest artist at The Royal Ball? Why are the Ugly Stepsisters called Kylie and Dannii? Why has the traditional Fairy Godmother been replaced by a Footy Fairy? And what are they all doing here in Hawthorn?

All of these questions are answered in this hilarious, out-of-the-box version of probably the most popular pantomime of all time, Cinderella.

With musical styles ranging from rap to rock, country to classical; this is not Cinderella as you know it! Fast paced and punchy, this is one for kids of all ages.

Let the whole family break free with this unmissable show. Dance and sing in the aisles too – we won’t tell anyone!

Motion Transcend provides an expressionist canvas for its choreographers, examining movement both in a physical, athletic setting as well as in a spiritual or inner sense. The interaction between beings and the study of emotion and of self all emerge from this canvas.

This program also features a masterclass presented by Melbourne Ballet Company.

Coming August 2014

JS Bach’s Violin Concerto in A minor brings an infectious spontaneity to this program, which celebrates both the lively rhythmic energy and the elegiac poignancy of music for strings.

Bartok’s Roumanian Dances exude a lively rustic charm whilst Grieg’s ever-popular Holberg Suite takes the form of a colourful tribute to the courtly manners of the 18th century ballroom.

Coming September 2014

The story of an Old Man who works in a rundown bookshop, watching the world around him change until one day his quiet life is interrupted by a Little Girl who enters the shop and won’t leave.

What happens next takes the audience on a journey through magical worlds of story and memory where the lines between reality and make believe fall away.
