Season 2 July – December

Page 3: Hawthorn Arts Centre Season 2 Program

The foyer has been buzzing, glasses clinking and audiences applauding heartily throughout our inaugural season. We are thrilled to see locals and visitors to the area alike thoroughly embracing the inner-east’s new centre for the arts.

Season 2 shows no signs of dulling the enthusiasm, with some of Melbourne’s stalwart companies billed to grace our exquisite heritage theatre. Taking you on a voyage from classic to the contemporary, the second half of the year is peppered with ballet, chamber music, theatre and some of the biggest names in Australian comedy.

Opening the season, the Melbourne Ballet Company presents their acclaimed work, Motion Transcend — Le Sacre Du Printemps, an encapsulating and dynamic work. And for the first time we are able to bring dancers and audience together in a range of ballet workshops for all ages. This is a rare opportunity for students to work with some of the most illustrious practitioners in Melbourne’s ballet scene. We encourage you to book early.

Melbourne Chamber Orchestra comes to the Centre in September to contribute to the local area’s rich history of classical music practice and performance. Appealing to both loyal and new music audiences, works from MCO’s Elegies & Dances program will move and delight.

In conjunction with Tasmania Performs, we’re so proud to present the latest work from award-winning Australian playwright, Tom Holloway. As We Forgive, showing in August, explores the motives, methods and means of forgiveness and will ring true with parts of each of us.

Matinee Music returns with a bumper line up of favourites including tributes to Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli, The Carpenters and the king of musical theatre, Andrew Lloyd Webber. With complimentary morning tea served pre-show and an opportunity to meet the performers, Matinee Music is a great opportunity to catch up with friends during the day.

Anyway, we’ll leave our latest offering with you to browse through, while basking in those sun-filled Second Empire windows, savouring that espresso…

See you during Season 2!

Melbourne Chamber Orchestra presents Elegies & Dances, an emotionally-charged homage to the two great moods of the string orchestra: the sparkling drive of the dance and the poignancy of the elegy.

The program has been elegantly constructed with stirring Bachrich and Stokowski arrangements of famous Baroque adagios that will take your breath away and juxtaposed with Bartók’s rustic regionalism and Grieg’s enduring tribute to the courtly manners of the eighteenth century. Artistic Director and one of Australia’s best-loved soloists William Hennessy also contributes with the performance of Bach’s Concerto in A minor.

An event and experience not to be missed.

The Harbinger is an enchanting adult fairy tale by Queensland's inimitable Dead Puppet Society that melds live performance, puppetry, animation and stage trickery to create a richly magical world where the lines between reality and make-believe fall away.

Part puppet show, part storybook, part daydream, The Harbinger is a classic tale of heroes and villains, centred on a little girl and an old man who find themselves thrown together in the aftermath of civil war. The Harbinger embraces terror and beauty and enchants us with both.

“Like all great theatre, we just came out feeling that little bit more human.” — Hobart Mercury

Two of Tasmania’s eminent theatre practitioners, Robert Jarman and Tom Holloway, come together in this absorbing production about the motives, the methods and the meaning of forgiveness. This solo play, written by Tom Holloway especially for Robert Jarman, is directed by the award-winning Julian Meyrick.

The show presents the bravura Jarman in the roles of three solitary men who are injured yet enduring, grieving yet gregarious, and who must each confront the fact and act of forgiveness in their lives.
