“I’m glad the HSU has us covered on the journey to and from work. I for one know the implications of having that right ripped away. I had a car accident while driving to work late last year and because of O’Farrell’s ‘reforms’ I don’t qualify for workers compensation. I lost wages and overtime and had to pay medical bills and hospital costs without any assistance. I felt completely exposed and alone. At least now I know if it ever happens again the HSU has me covered. The Health Services Union New South Wales is delivering on an important election promise by providing members with accident journey insurance.

Despite a hard fought union campaign the New South Wales Workers Compensation Legislation Amendment Bill 2012 was rammed through Parliament on 19th June 2012.

The legislation effectively removed workers’ compensation coverage for employees travelling to and from their place of employment, except in special circumstances.

With this in mind, the HSU leadership team is now offering accident journey insurance for financial members of the union to ensure that no HSU member is exposed to a loss of income if injured on the journey to and from work.

The journey insurance will cover eligible members who are injured on or after 25th February 2013.
