Page 8: A.Karamitsos Public Auction 478

Page 9: A.Karamitsos Public Auction 478

All descriptions are reliable and accurate and the lots are sold as genuine and authentic, unless the contrary is indicated. The purchaser may reject the lot and return it within 7 days (post office date stamp) after the end of the auction, if he proves it is not genuine or incorrectly described. The lots must be returned intact and as originally despatched. Lots which have been examined by the buyers before the auction cannot be returned. Also, lots purchased in the room cannot be returned after leaving the place. Buyers have no right to reject mixed lots, collections containing undescribed items, or described as having defects. Any illustration is part of the description and items cannot be returned for defects visible in it. When the value of

a lot lies in the cancellation and not in the stamp, any defects of the latter shall not be a reason for rejecting the lot.

The highest bidder shall prevail. In case of equal mail bids, the earlier arrived will be considered as succesful. Telephone bids are acceptable, but should be confirmed in writing.

Before start selling or the date of the auction the Auctioneer has the right to withdraw any of the lots, to divide it into two or more parts, or to join two or more lots into one.

Bids should be received at least 2 hours before the start of the Sale.

Payment must be made in full just after the end of the sale in the room, or within 10 days after receipt of our invoice. Foreign buyers can pay by credit card (we accept Visa and Mastercard) or by Bank Cheque, personal cheque and money order in foreign currency or in euro. Interest shall be payable by the purchaser on any overdue account. The Auctioneer has a descretion to waive payment of the interest. Title shall remain to A. KARAMITSOS until payment in full is received.

Any buyer could be excluded if he is not a person of good faith, according to the Auctioneer’s opinion.

The invoices and the lots will be mailed to the address given on the bidding form. Postage and insurance is charged to the buyers. No packing cost is charged. The receipt for “Registered” letter by the Post Office constitutes delivery receipt for the

Auctioneer.

A 18% buyer’s commission will be added to the “hammer price” for each lot, plus the respective Value Additive Tax (VAT) on our commission. All prices expressed in the catalogue and all bids are in euro, unless otherwise is stated.

Unsold lots with starting price “OFFER” are not available for sale after the end of the auction.

The sale price of lots marked as “OFFER” is defined by the highest offer, highest bid wins the item at said price.

The bidder (either via mail or in the room) is responsible for the invoice’s payment, unless otherwise aggreed, in writing, with the company.

Anyone who will take part in this Auction is familiar to the conditions of sale and accepts them. Any dispute shall be subject to the jurisdiction of the competent Court in Thessaloniki, Greece.

Extreme Dry impression, no embossing, no vert. lined backgr., contour traces on all 4 stamps and dotted petasus line. Rare Uncataloged variety of impression in Hellas 9IIc shade. From Pos.77-78, 87-88, the block shows very early (during Hard Method Printing) «frame incomplete» plate error of both pos.77+78, and thus offers unique proof – that the Decoupage used in Greek LHH Stamps was meant to increased contrast, provide fine (airy) printing of spandrels-shading and NOT meant to correct irregularities of unleveled plates as in the case of the French stamps. Pos.87 stamp is defective, affected by a tear originating in lower margin, mentioned only for accuracy considering the rarity and importance of the unique block in the study and classification of the LHH. (Euro 5200 for typical Bl-4 9IIc).»

Lot. 103 1862-67 1 Lepton, in a Rare used strip of 6. Extremely fine used, with six clear strikes of «106» type I of Corfu. This is the Con/dis 27b of a copper-brown shade, belonging to a 1864 printing, circulating primarily in 1865, displaying spotted background and a very dense array of ink spots characteristic of the period. Hellas 15b. Strips more than 5 stamps are rarely encountered in 1 Lep. The 1 lepton strip of 6 results from the temporarily imposed 26lep Inter-Ionian rate, during that period. The 2l of 1871-76 is a very rare stamp, seldom found even as a

single. Very few blocks of 4 exist.

This is the largest known surviving block from the much rarer pale gray

Bistre shade.

- Thick crackly gum, - Pale grayish shade,

- Very light extremely messy (vague) impression,

typically with dotted petassus line and shading are the most important characteristics of this rare stamp.

The pale grayish shade is very infrequently encountered.

This great rarity also shows special characteristics which relate to the abuse of the plates in Athens, by

presenting the unique properties of Positions 62&63 of the 2l plate

The present extremely important block proves that so called

‘plate errors’ must be grouped as follows:

a. Errors created during production of the Cliches (e.g thinned circle

etc), see current article in Philotelia b. Errors created during the

assembly of the Plates (in Paris). c. Plate Errors created in Athens,

caused by regular use/abuse, i.e. minor wear, scratches etc. d. Errors caused from heavy abuse causing minor gradual

reduction of rigidity and minor loosening of some clichés which

become apparent in the latest printings only.

62-63 & 125 (lower-left only) are the sole positions of the 2l plate with this occurrence in the latest printing.

Orange (31b of the Etude) with an early 28.3.63 cancellation, as well as the very rare 80l. Pair of “true” Pale Rose (not orange -rose) cn bearing the Vertically Lined Background of the First Athenian 80l. Printing of 1862. This stamp is first known to have circulated in Syros in April-May of 1863 this being surprisingly early date (in late March) while in Athens is only known to have been used during August 1863, several months later. In addition, the pair originates from positions 99-100 of the Sheet bearing the well known characteristic “Distant Top Margin” Plate error of Position 99. The stamps which are all intact have been previously removed and replaced in the exact position, enabling the large-margined 80l. Of pos.100 to be inspected as well as the critical 80l. Control numbers to be sufficiently accessible for inspection. The cover has been previously mounted to perfection. An exceptionally informative Entire with a franking that presents an extremely early date (probably earliest?) of a very elusive stamp, unlisted in commercial catalogs (typically confused either with the listed common later stamp with normal carmine cn which belongs to a later well established setting (without Vert. Lined Background), or with the earlier, eaqually common stamp with the orange-rose cn that is mentioned in Con/dis with the June 4 1862 date.

Lot. 407 A BEAUTIFULL, UNIQUE, FIVE COLOUR FRANKING OF 1875-80. RRR! Though more than a dozen five colour frankings have survived from the early 1862-67 period (presented primarily in 188 and 155 postal rates etc), there is no alternative to this unique five colour franking for the later period: Entire with double domestic rate (40 lepta), from Patrai (3.1.80) to Tinos. An extremely tidy entire (all stamps upright and straight, – not overlapping), and thus quite appealing visually, truly a “wonderful cover” as described at the “Nissia” collection sale (D.Feldman) in 1999. The 1875-80 issue franking, quite informative of the circulation at Patrai, includes 1 lep deep red-brown, 2X2 lep bistre, 5 lep deep yellow-green (coarse print), 10 lep orange and 20 lep violet-blue (ultramarine). (Hellas 47c+48a+49c+50b+51f). Faint transient 67 of Syros type II cds on reverse, a most remarkable exhibit of classical greek philately-unique later period colour franking beauty, masterfully mounted.

THE STAMPS OF THE LARGE HERMES HEAD - 1861-1886Overview - Precise Depiction of the Variety of Impressions by

Four Methods of Printing - Sequence of Printings

By Stephano A. Calliga, Dr. Architect, Published November 25th, 2012, 151 years from the circulation of Large Hermes Heads printed in Athens.

Aimed at specialists and a wider circle of Large Hermes Heads collectors and en-thuisasts. This is a dense study of the complete 25 year period of Large Hermes Heads printings, which circulated for almost 40 years. A numbered collectable edition with a very few copies printed, practically unavailable in private hands. Very dense presentation 149 pages + xii introduction. Reviewed in Philotelia and in the London Philatelist.

A must for the expert scholar and serious collector alike. More than 1250 colour illustrations consistently scanned from the actual stamps, neatly presented in ta-bles. New evidence on Circulation Dates and Control Number Varieties. Unprec-edented sequence of Printings of the complete 25 year period in comparison to the work of previous scholars, transcribed in the same format in appendices. Cir-culation tables suitable for the whole period. Specialized classifications of impor-tant or misunderstood stamps, including detailed classification of 10lepta and 20 lepta 1862-67. Detailed description and analysis of four alternative methods of Printing and their implications on the impression of the stamps. Presentation of printing hardware, detailed history of the design, the printing, the circulation, the collection and the scholarly research of the Large Hermes Heads, with chrono-logically arranged general bibliography, essays, previous scholars etc. ENGLISH edition ONLY is published. A rare opportunity to acquire a rare edition of land-mark significance, for the scholarly research on the Large Hermes Heads and a very dense book on the subject with consistently scanned rare colour varieties, presented for the first time next to the common stamps of the same issues. En-larged 200% illustrations of various impessions (20 lepta value), in relation to the printing methods. A publication that signifies the world wide particularity and importance of the Large Hermes Head even outside the scope of world-wide philately, as a uniquely favourable case study of exhaustively applied alternative and often contrasting, advanced methods of artistic printing. Thus, the Large Hermes Head as artistic printing of the highest degree, printed either to match or to contrast the designer’s aesthetic ideal, as expressed by the prescribed print-ing method that was invented by A.Barre and implemented in the October 1861 Paris issue, or alternative printed with little care for aesthetic merit, merely to meet postal needs.
