This month, harmonia mundi label explores rarely heard gems by Mendelssohn. Written when the composer was still in his teens, the joyful and virtuosic Double Concerto and Piano Concerto are given insightful and sparkling performances by Kristian Bezuidenhout and the Freiburger Barockorchester, with Gottfried von der Goltz conducting from the violin. Alia Vox presents L’orchestre de Louis XV (p.9), the latest disc in Jordi Savall’s ongoing French music series, which focuses on the orchestral music of Jean-Philippe Rameau. On Hyperion, Stephen Hough’s disc of the complete Waltzes by Chopin will be another sure-fi re hit (p.13), while on Mariinsky, Valery Gergiev leads his orchestra in the label’s fi fth opera recording, a fi ery reading of Donizetti’s immortal Lucia di Lammermoor (p.15) featuring Natalie Dessay. Violinist Viktoria Mullova plays a selection of twentieth-century gypsy-infl uenced classical and jazz works on her new Onyx album, The Peasant Girl (p.17). In non-classical releases, World Village offers the lovely, lilting Tewesta: Remembrance (p.23) by Ethiopia’s Addis Acoustic Project.

IMPORTBoccherini owes his celebrity to more than just the Minuet of his string quintet Op.11 No.5. This recording proves that fact with stunning brilliance: from the castanets of the Fandango to the much more Viennese style of the string quartet, the musicians of the Cuarteto Casals and their guests demonstrate the infi nite creative resources of the composer. It culminates in the La musica notturna delle strade di Madrid (Night Music from the Streets of Madrid), a vivid example of musical realism in which, as Boccherini put it, ‘the strict rules of counterpoint’ would be out of place.

IMPORTThree years before the Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture, Felix Mendelssohn wrote an amazing concerto for fortepiano and violin, built on the Classical model but brimming with new, even iconoclastic ideas. Astonishingly, when it had its fi rst performance in May 1823, the composer was just fourteen. He had already written around one hundred works, including a piano concerto premiered a year earlier. It was not until the late 20th century that either work appeared in a critical edition, and it is those rediscovered scores upon which this recording is based. Kristian Bezuidenhout is joined by the Freiburger Barockorchester and their violinist/conductor Gottfried von der Goltz.

IMPORTHailed for his “revelatory” account of Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier (The New York Times), Richard Egarr turns to one of the least-known and most entrancing collections in the repertory for solo harpsichord. This complete recording of the works for solo keyboard by Louis Couperin (c.1626-1661) revels in the music’s rich harmonic and contrapuntal textures, which are marked by a poignant use of dissonance. None of Couperin’s music was published during his lifetime, but manuscript copies of some 200 pieces survive, some of them only rediscovered in the mid-20th century. The fi rst historically important member of the Couperin family, Louis Couperin made seminal contributions to the development of both the French organ school and French harpsichord school. His innovations included composing organ pieces for specifi c registrations and inventing the genre of the unmeasured prelude for harpsichord, for which he devised a special type of notation.

IMPORTVaughan Williams completed The Garden of Proserpine, scored for soprano soloist, chorus and full orchestra, in 1899. For the

twenty-something composer, it was a fi rst attempt at a large-scale work. Given that Vaughan Williams had only produced a handful of songs and some chamber pieces by this date, it is an impressive achievement that achieves that combination of radiance and nobility that is characteristic of the composer’s later works. In the Fen Country was completed in 1904. The melodic outlines and spirit of folk music are prevalent in this work. Patrick Hadley’s Fen and Flood was inspired by the devastating events of the night of January 31, 1953 when a deadly hurricane force wind created a storm tide up to 18 feet above mean sea level. Overall, 2,400 people lost their lives. Vaughan Williams persuaded his friend Hadley to allow him to arrange the work for chorus. The new arrangement was fi rst performed in 1956 and was dedicated to Vaughan Williams. All of the recordings presented here are world premières.

With glistening orchestral colors and breathtaking virtuosity, Savall and his group demonstrate their special affi nity with the repertoire of the XVIIIth century. IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDIn the album notes, Iván Fischer discusses Bluebeard’s Castle. “Despite occasional successful stagings of this opera, it is concert performances that stir up the feelings of audiences most. Usually, after the opera has ended, discussions break out, dividing men and women. Whereas everybody seems to understand why Judith cannot resist her desire to open all the doors, Bluebeard’s character remains controversial. Bartók, who was himself a closed, shy man, seems to have been fascinated by strange-looking characters who turn out to feel endless love.”

IMPORTElizabethan music for viol consort maintains a miraculous balance between complexity, virtuosity and melodic beauty. Although the group’s name refers to a magnum opus of the Elizabethan era, the consort Sit Fast performs music from many periods and repertoires. Bach’s Art of Fugue is one of the mainstays of the group’s repertoire, and this new recording explores all of the works’ many facets and colors in performances that are both insightful and joyous.

IMPORTBest known thanks to the epic 1936 version by Carl Orff, the original Carmina Burana, a manuscript containing poems and songs from the 11th and 12th centuries, is one of the most important collections of Goliard and vagabond songs. Its songs originate from all over Europe, and include works from Occitania, France, England, Scotland, Aragon, Castile and the Holy Roman Empire. In these songs, satire is the dominant theme, often at the expense of the Catholic Church. On this new recording, the Ensemble Obsidienne strikes an appropriately delicate balance between the devilish and the angelic.

DOMESTICThis disc is a re-release of Gloriae Dei Cantores’ classic 1994 recording of music by Josef Gabriel Rheinberger, one of nineteenth-century Germany’s most gifted teachers and composers. Rheinberger wrote works reminiscent of those of Brahms and Schumann and yet their attractive lyricism is unique. This tribute to the composer includes a rich and fascinating selection of the composers’ masses and motets.

IMPORTOrlande de Lassus was an undisputed master of all the vocal genres of the late Renaissance, from German lied to Latin mass. He was extraordinarily prolific, and this recording features the glorious polyphony of the Missa Amor ecco colei and Prophetiae Sibyllarum, two of his most celebrated works. With the latter’s extreme chromaticism and constant modulation, Lassus stretched the compositional boundaries of the time to produce one of the most important and advanced works to come from the sixteenth century. With their immaculate and instinctive performance style, Stephen Rice and the Brabant Ensembleprove the perfect advocates for this challenging music.

IMPORTBritish organist Andrew-John Smith once again brings his compelling artistry to the service of Camille Saint-Saëns. Smith’s commanding sense of architecture, breathtaking musicality and astonishing control of dynamics and nuance is thrilling. As with Volume 1, this disc provides a rare opportunity to hear Saint-Saëns’s organ works played on the very instrument for which they were composed — the magnifi cent Cavaillé-Coll at La Madeleine, Paris. Saint-Saëns was renowned for his extraordinary organ improvisations and it was said that ‘his genius was of an indescribable splendor.’

His earlier Chopin recordings for Hyperion garnered huge critical acclaim. Hough’s name has become synonymous with pianistic elegance, fl awless technique and immense musicianship and he has become globally renowned for his engaging and refi ned Chopin interpretations. In his Waltzes, Chopin brought a new level of sophistication to this popular dance form. The disc is rounded off with the famous E fl at major Nocturne, which gives a more lyrical expression to the meter of the waltz. These illuminating and compelling performances are not to be missed.

IMPORTPreviously Available as CDA 66617 (034571166148) Deleted May 2009The Missa Pange Lingua is probably the most famous work written by Josquin des Prez and is generally thought to be his last mass. Rather than being a summation of his previous compositional techniques, Josquin’s mass synthesizes several contrapuntal trends from the late 15th and early 16th centuries into a new style that would become the predominant compositional technique used by Franco-Flemish composers in the fi rst half of the 16th century. On this classic Hyperion recording, the Choir of Westminster Cathedral is led by James O’Donnell.

IMPORTPreviously Available as CDA 67277 (034571172774) Deleted April 2010Mozart’s contribution to the repertoire of music with wind instruments is of considerable signifi cance. Not only did he write concertos for fl ute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn, but he also made frequent use of these instruments in his chamber music. His interest in varied textures and colors led to unusual, sometimes unique, combinations of wind or wind and strings, and many of these works have become cornerstones of the repertoire. These important works could not be in more talented hands than those of The Gaudier Ensemble, who effervesce outstanding playing throughout in performances that Mozart himself would surely have been proud of.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThe Mar i insky labe l ’s opera recordings have garnered acclaim and awards from around the world, most recently for Valery Gergiev’s recording of Parsifal released in 2010. For the label’s fi fth opera, Gergiev conducts Donizetti’s masterpiece Lucia di Lammermoor with a magnifi cent cast led by Natalie Dessay. Donizetti’s tragic opera depicts a family feud set in the Lammermuir hills of Scotland. Inspired by Sir Walter Scott’s novel The Bride of Lammermoor, the central character of Lucia Ashton is torn between her family and true love and eventually descends into madness. Dessay is one of the world’s most sought-after sopranos and an admired interpreter of lyric heroines. She is particularly renowned for her interpretation of the role of Lucia, which she has performed at the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House and the Mariinsky Theatre.

IMPORTThe works of Respighi’s “Roman Trilogy” are probably among the most spectacularly orchestrated compositions in the repertoire. The vivid colors and sounds of Imperial Rome are brought to life — from the violence in the Coliseum and the legions marching with grim determination along the Appian Way, to children playing around a fountain on a hot Roman summer’s day. Josep Caballé-Domenech, who studied with Sir Colin Davis and David Zinman, leads the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in glorious performances that bring out every nuance of these beloved masterpieces.

IMPORTThe music in this eclectic program refl ects the deep infl uence of gypsy music on both classical and jazz music in the 20th century. Even when wearing ‘classical’ clothes, the music of the gypsies cannot disguise its honesty, directness and driving rhythmic pulse. This new set features music by classical greats Bartók and Kodály alongside selections from the world of jazz, including John Lewis’s Django and tracks by the band Weather Report. All of this music has strong connections for Ukrainian violinist Viktoria Mullova. Only two generations ago, her family lived off the land in a small village and the simplicity and ethnic fl avor of peasant life is very much part of her. The music on these CDs allows us to glimpse another side of this fascinating artist.

IMPORTThe Hungarian-born pianist Klára Würtz has made a name for herself through her international concert career and her numerous recordings, including award-winning sets of Mozart and Schumann. Now she turns to the deceptively simple word of the Schubert Impromptus — popular pieces often attempted by amateur pianists. She discovers a world of intense emotions, from peaceful beauty to tragic despair, the musical language of the late piano sonatas and Winterreise. Würtz was nurtured in the rich musical environment of the Liszt Academy in Budapest in the seventies and eighties, surrounded by such musical giants as Zoltán Kocsis, András Schiff, Ferenc Rados and György Kurtág.

IMPORTIt takes courage to start a Chopin Edition in an overcrowded market, well after the Chopin festivities of 2010 and with a virtually unknown pianist. Roberto Poli, born in Venice, is a true Renaissance man, much involved in music, painting and poetry and deserving of discovery. He is considered an eloquent and authoritative communicator and exponent of Chopin’s music, which he has studied extensively using manuscripts and fi rst editions. Poli studied with Philippe Cassard, Vladimir Tropp and Boris Petrushansky at the famous Imola Piano Academy. He currently lives and works in Boston, where he plays, teaches and paints. This is the fi rst volume in a complete edition of Chopin’s piano music.

IMPORTAt only 26, Russian pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk can already boast of an impressive international career. After having won several prestigious competitions (first prize Hamamatsu Competition in Japan at 16 and fi rst prize at the Rubinstein Competition in 2005), he has played with such prestigious orchestras as Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. His last recital at the International Piano Series in Amsterdam was a triumph and was recorded red hot by Piano Classics right after the event. Gavrylyuk’s technique knows no limits, as is proven in the virtuoso Russian repertoire on this disc. However, there is so much more then technique here. He shapes phrases with striking sensitivity and possesses a nearly boundless palette of pianistic colors.

Since then he toured the world, hailed by critics as “a model of balance and Imagination,” praising his “burnished, unforced bronze-like sound, in the Rachmaninoff manner” (Harold Schonberg), and “one of the greatest pianists I have ever heard” (Yehudi Menuhin). Cohen’s recording of the Liszt Sonata and other works, made in the nineties, is one the consistently most satisfying recordings he ever made, displaying a strong sense of structure, deep poetic involvement and colossal technique.

Claudio Arrau was steeped in the music of Liszt from his early teens, having studied in Berlin with the famous Martin Krause, himself a student of Liszt. The legendary “Arrau sound,” with its deep and ringing sonority, gave Liszt’s piano music an unheard spectrum of emotions. This disc features historic live performances of Arrau from his early career. Alfred Brendel has long been one of the foremost champions of Liszt’s music. This new set compiles revelatory Liszt recordings Brendel made in the 60s and 70s for the Vox and Vanguard labels. It took a long time before the musical establishment recognized the genius of the great Cuban pianist Jorge Bolet. It was through his recordings for Decca, starting in the 80s, that the world got to know Bolet’s superb interpretative skills. This set from Piano Classics features Bolet’s youthful recordings for the Spanish label Ensayo, in which the young lion of the keyboard displays his abundant virtuosity.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDDefi ned and codifi ed by Haydn, the string quartet became an opera without words in the works of Mozart and an expression of powerful metaphysical concepts in the works of Beethoven. The Zemlinsky Quartet, trained by the Czech school and acclaimed by the Viennese, offer three stellar examples from among the most famous chamber music works of the period known as the First Viennese School.

IMPORTHybrid SACD/ StereoThis SACD is the fi rst of a series dedicated to Wilhelm Furtwängler’s live concerts. The inaugural disc features the famous Vienna Philharmonic Eroica recorded in December 1944 at the Musikvereinssaal, with Friedrich Schnapp at the controls. Tahra has carefully remastered the original tapes from the archive of the Deutsche Rundfunk. Future releases in the series will include a Bruckner eighth, recorded two months earlier, the famous Brahms concert in Hamburg (October 1951) and the Berlin concerts (Beethoven symphonies). The Super Audio CD format serves as the ideal medium to ensure optimal sound quality.

IMPORTHans Werner Henze recently celebrated his 85th birthday. In his essay “Über Instrumentalkomposition” of 1963, Henze states, “Everything moves toward the theatre and comes back from there. In the orchestral pieces it is visibly close, although the typical of certain traditions of symphonic music is borne in mind.” Henze’s symphonies Nos. 3, 4 and 5 clearly demonstrate this unique symbiosis between music theatre and symphonic music. These three key works of the modern era are performed here in defi nitive readings by the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin under the direction of maestro Marek Janowski.

IMPORTThis recording of Stockhausen’s Tierkreis (Zodiac) features the composer’s version for organ. Originally composed for musical boxes, the work is played here by Dominik Susteck, organist at St. Peter’s in Cologne. The recording features an unusual instrument. Since the 1980s, this Catholic chapel has strived to connect the church with contemporary art. Its organ, built by Willy Peter, was designed for contemporary music. The four-manual great organ and the three-manual choir organ has104 stops, including such unusual sound additions as siren, saxophone and percussion orchestra. Susteck describes his interpretation of Stockhausen’s work as, “a frozen musical movement. The instrument no longer sounds like an organ but proves to be a colorful, agile and dynamic being.”

IMPORTFile in: World /Africa / EgyptThe revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt were uprisings by real people that effected real change and brought hope to millions. In the organization of these opposition movements, the Internet played a major role as an alternative news agency. Gradually, new music by various groups turned up on sites like YouTube, along which fi lm footage of the protests, attracting millions of visitors. In close collaboration with the musicians, Network has now issued the fi rst CD of some of the most important soundtracks of these revolts. From Tunisia there is Zorah Lejnef with her revolutionary hit “Free Tunis,” Skander Guetari with an oriental ballad encouraging the demoralized young people to engage in honorable protest, the rapper El General with a candidly presented list of the many abuses being suffered and Alia Salimi with a subtle song about the new light at the end of a tunnel of silence. In Egypt, the song “The Sound of Freedom” by Bani Adel became a hymn of the revolution and together with “Ezzay” by pop-star Mohammed Mounir, had more than three million visitors on YouTube. Also from Egypt, the Sufi singer Aida champions the peaceful coexistence of the different religions. This is music that accuses, that unites in protest, that expresses hopes and longings, that invites us to refl ect and that encourages a new self-determined beginning.

DOMESTICSACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDFile in: JazzRecorded in 1960, Sunny Side Up features alto master Lou Donaldson paired with a fi ne cadre of up-and-coming sidemen. In particular, trumpeter Bill Hardman and pianist Duke Pearson contribute a healthy dose of soul to the arrangements, which, combined with rock solid drumming from Al Harewood and tight bass work from Sam Jones and Laymon Jackson, are highlights of this particularly fi ne album. Tracks include originals by Donaldson (“The Truth,” “Goose Grease”), pianist Horace Parlan (“Blues for JP”) and Hardman (“Politely”).

DOMESTICSACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDFile in: JazzThis 1961 live date from the legendary (and now-defunct) New York City jazz club is one of saxophonist Stanley Turrentine’s fi nest. APO’s remaster for SACD features the fi rst volume of the original two disc set. Tracks include standards and a couple of blues numbers and feature Turrentine at the height of his youthful power. DOMESTICSACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDFile in: JazzTrumpeter Freddie Hubbard arrived in New York in 1960 and immediately wowed the jazz scene with his burnished tone and staggering technique. Hub Cap was Hubbard’s third album in less than a year and it yielded several masterpieces. The album was originally released in 1961, three years before Hubbard worked with Eric Dolphy on Out To Lunch and Herbie Hancock on Maiden Voyage — two landmark recordings in the jazz discography. On Hub Cap, Hubbard leads a particularly talented sextet, including Jimmy Heath, Cedar Walton and Philly Joe Jones. Four tracks are Hubbard originals, and APO has included an alternate take of “Plexus” as an added bonus.

DOMESTICSACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDFile in: JazzOn Midnight Special, organist Jimmy Smith, tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine and guitarist Kenny Burrell make up a potent quartet, backed with style by drummer Donald Bailey. The group plays with heart and soul in fi ve red hot numbers including “Jumpin’ the Blues” and “One O’Clock Jump.” Midnight Special was culled from the same sessions that produced Smith’s classic album Back to the Chicken Shack, and for those familiar with that album, this set features musicianship of comparable quality and inspiration.

Highlights include Mobley’s “Uh Huh” and masterful takes on the standards “The Best Things in Life Are Free” and “Three Coins in the Fountain.”

IMPORTFile in: JazzLive 2001 contains the quintessence of Latcho Drom. This selection of the best moments from their 2001 tour is a demonstration of the ease with which the group formed by Christophe Lartilleux can build a relationship with its audience.
