IMPORTFollowing on his acclaimed disc of Johann Ludwig Bach, conductor Hans-Christoph Rademann cont inues h i s fascinating exploration of history’s most famous musical dynasty. Born in 1735, Johann Christian Bach was the youngest of Johann Sebastian’s sons. He seems to have remained in his father’s shadow until the age of 19, when he had the chance to travel to Italy, very likely to receive guidance from the celebrated Padre Martini, as his (future) friend Mozart was to do some years later. It was in Milan that he wrote the two works recorded here, including his incredible Requiem with its completely unorthodox formal design. In matters of style, however, the 22-year-old composer had already laid the foundations of all his later output.

Sung in English, Middle Irish and Latin and calling for sixteen voices, guitar and bodhráin (Irish frame drum), the score takes its title from the important 12th/13th-century narrative Dialogue of the Elders, which follows two legendary heroes, Caílte and Oisín, in their travels around Ireland as they retell their ancient stories to a newly arrived Saint Patrick.

Spanning the entire 13th century — from virtuosic motets and conductus to heartfelt laments and sacred songs — the remarkable Las Huelgas manuscript was compiled for a convent of aristocratic Castilian women who (in spite of a rule forbidding Cistercian nuns from singing polyphony) sang the most beautiful, advanced and demanding music from all across Gothic-era Europe.

IMPORTAmong his many famous and beloved concertos, Vivaldi wrote no fewer than twenty-seven for the cello — an instrument that at the time was generally consigned to playing basso continuo. With the genuine virtuosi he had available to him at the Ospedale della Pietà, the Prete Rosso played a key role in the emancipation of the cello. On this new CD of Vivaldi concertos, acclaimed cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras is supported by the musicians of the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin in a fascinating program that is further enhanced by a selection of highly expressive Sinfonias by Antonio Caldara.

IMPORTC o n t i n u i n g h i s exploration of Handel operas, maestro René Jacobs now turns his attention to Agrippina — the fi rst great operatic success of the composer’s Italian period. Composed in 1709, Agrippina is an opera seria in three acts on a libretto by Cardinal Vincenzo Grimani. The opera tells the story of Agrippina, the mother of Nero, as she plots the downfall of the Roman Emperor Claudius and the installation of her son as emperor. Grimani’s libretto, considered one of the best that Handel set, is full of topical political allusions. Some believe that it refl ects the rivalry between Grimani and Pope Clement XI. From its opening night, the work was given a then-unprecedented run of 27 consecutive performances and received much critical acclaim. Observers were full of praise for the quality of the music — much of which, in keeping with the contemporary custom, had been borrowed and adapted from other works, including some from other composers. Jacobs performs the work in its original version.

IMPORTThis set is the fi rst in a new APR series featuring pupils of the great British piano teacher, Tobias Matthay. From the 1890s to the 1930s, Matthay almost singlehandedly created and nurtured an English piano tradition. York Bowen was an early pupil, but those best remembered are a group of female pianists — Harriet Cohen, Myra Hess, Irene Scharrer and Moura Lympany — all of whom will feature in this series. Eileen Joyce studied with Matthay between 1930 and 1933 and from 1933 to 1960, she was one of Britain’s best loved pianists. Her greatest recordings are from the 78rpm period and all are featured on this set with the exception of her concerto performances and a few later Decca discs. Most of these recordings have never been transferred to CD before so this set is a ‘must’ for all enthusiasts of great piano playing from the past.

IMPORTThe advent of American jazz and dance music in Europe was a gift from the gods for young composers hungry to fi nd new paths and means of expression. Popular dance music has long been a source of inspiration for ‘serious’ composers. The Charleston meant as much to composers of the 20s and 30s as the Sarabande did to Bach and the Polonaise did to Chopin. Jazz represented a radical break with the traditional and echoed the elated expectations that had replaced wartime suffering. This CD bears witness to the ‘jazz fever’ that swept across Europe during this period. The Ebony Band, founded in 1990 by Werner Herbers, specializes in modern, adventurous music primarily from the fi rst half of the 20th century.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDIn creating the 12-part choral masterpiece Figure humaine, the poet Eluard and composer Poulenc were the perfect team. Eluard’s poignant and sinister surrealistic texts are very moving and their wonderfully expressive language depicts the horrors of the Second World War. Also featured here are Poulenc’s Mass in G, Un Soir de Niege and Sept Chansons. This stunning new super-audio recording featuring the Swedish Radio Choir led by Peter Dijkstra brings out all the colors and complexities of these key works of the twentieth century.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDA wealth of recordings is available with music by Telemann written in the popular French and Italian styles. However, on Barbaric Beauty, the Holland Baroque Society focuses on Telemann’s music in the Polish style. Joined by Milos Valent — a specialist both in Baroque music and 18th-century Central-European folk music — the group plays a program that mixes classical and folk music of the period and demonstrates the centuries-old infl uence of ‘popular’ music on ‘art’ music. Alongside music by Telemann and his contemporaries, the disc features folk dance music from the Melodarium/ Szirmay-Keczer and Uhrovec Collections.

IMPORTThe score for Jacob van Eyck’s Der Fluyten Lust-hof (The Recorder’s Pleasure Garden) is literally a blizzard of notes for solo recorder. Most recordings and performances of the collection are played exclusively on recorder, however, this new disc takes a totally different approach. As each work in the collection is a variation of a popular tune of the day, the performers here combine the songs that provided the original inspirations with Van Eyck’s recorder improvisations. Soprano Johannette Zomer is accompanied by the Ensemble Armonia e Invenzione led by conductor and recorder player Luis Beduschi.

IMPORTHyperion’s third disc in their Romantic Cello Concerto series sees the brilliant young cellist Gemma Rosefield making her label debut. Rosefi eld was the winner of the prestigious Pierre Fournier Award at Wigmore Hall in 2007 and has garnered great acclaim for her spirited playing. Irish-born Charles Villiers Stanford is far better known for his choral music, but this disc of rarities reveals the composer’s original orchestral voice. His D minor Cello Concerto, with its continuous thematic development and lilting melodies, was a major landmark in the repertoire of British cello music. In the overtly romantic Ballata and Ballabile, Stanford displays an extraordinary lyricism. Rosefi eld gives thoughtful performances throughout, her tone both beautifully consistent and richly hued, and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra play with their usual aplomb under the baton of Andrew Manze.

“Leave it to Hyperion with their combination of artistic curiosity and completeness to start a cello concerto series.”

IMPORTThe latest installment of this major Hyperion project introduces the American soprano Kiera Duffy, whose performances in the concert hall and on the opera stage have received the highest praise. The majority of the music in this recital was composed between 1888 and 1900, with the exception of the glorious Brentano-Lieder, which owe their richness and fl uency to the composer’s experience of opera composition. Duffy’s performances reveal a deep understanding of the complexity of the music. The disc features perceptive booklet notes from pianist and series mastermind Roger Vignoles in addition to full texts and translations.

IMPORTYoung countertenor Iestyn Davies makes his highly anticipated Hyperion solo debut with an enchanting disc of cantatas by the Italian composer Nicola Porpora. Porpora’s ability to set the Italian language to music was widely acknowledged during his lifetime and his music is full of imaginative word painting. Davies’ luminous tone has a celestial purity and he performs with prodigious technical assurance. His astonishing breath control creates a seamless melodic line. Davies is accompanied by the ensemble Arcangelo in interpretations that go far beyond mere historical understanding.

IMPORTThe phenomenal Angela Hewitt embarks upon another Hyperion journey, this time through the piano concertos of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The twenty-seven concertos for piano and orchestra contain some of the composer’s greatest achievements. Concertos Nos. 6 and 8, two of the young Mozart’s earliest attempts at the genre, display a perfection of form and an elegant purity. Concerto No. 9, the ‘Jeunehomme,’ written in 1777 when Mozart was 21, is considered to be the composer’s fi rst great masterpiece. The result of this creative outburst was a monument of musical originality and inventive orchestration. In these interpretations, Hewitt displays her characteristic elegance and innate musicality. She is supported by the impeccably refi ned playing of the Orchestra da Camera di Mantova and the disc includes a personal and illuminating sleeve note by the pianist.

IMPORTGramophone award-winning ensemble The Cardinall’s Musick present an album of music by Renaissance composer Robert Parsons. Very few records remain of the composer’s short life and his musical output is often overlooked, perhaps due to the long shadow of William Byrd, his successor at the Chapel Royal. However, Parsons’ vocal writing is some of the most opulent of the period. The Cardinall’s Musick give sublime performances of some of the composer’s most sumptuous works, from the remarkably sophisticated Magnifi cat to the dramatic O bone Jesu.

IMPORTHyperion’s Bach Transcriptions series views the great Baroque composer through the prism of the Romantic musical mind. This volume, the tenth in the series, presents the complete transcriptions by Camille Saint-Saëns, interspersed with those of his friend and disciple, Isidore Philipp. Saint-Saëns was one of the many composers inspired by the continuing publications from the Bach-Gesellschaft. His transcriptions are of particular interest due to his choice of unfamiliar music that was not originally conceived for a keyboard instrument. Bulgarian pianist Nadejda Vlaeva makes her Hyperion debut, performing with a palpable energy and impressive technical assurance.

His 1603 post as Kapellmeister in Wolfenbüttel necessitated extensive travel throughout Germany, enabling him to establish widespread acclaim as a conductor and musical advisor. Praetorius’ church music is much less known today than it should be, partly because of the sheer volume that he composed. This beautiful selection of hymns, chorales and carols attempts to reproduce the effect of a performance under Praetorius’ direction.

Before emigrating to the West, George Balanchine studied in St Petersburg and was a member of The State Academic Theatre, now known as the Mariinsky. Jewels dates from late in his career as a choreographer and was premiered at the New York City Ballet in 1967 and since 1999 has been a core part of the Mariinsky Ballet’s repertoire. Regarded as the world’s fi rst abstract ballet, Jewels features music by Fauré, Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky. There is a stark contrast in composition and style for each of the three acts, linked only by the dancers’ dazzling costumes encrusted with colored gems. The Mariinsky Ballet (also known as the Kirov) is probably the world’s greatest ballet company. They are supported here by the Mariinsky Orchestra, led by Tugan Sokhiev. The performance was fi lmed by Brian Large at the Mariinsky Theatre and the both the DVD and Blu-ray discs include a bonus interview with the Artistic Director of the Mariinsky Theatre, Valery Gergiev.

Valery Gergiev is widely recognized as the greatest modern interpreter of Tchaikovsky’s music and the Mariinsky Orchestra holds a peerless reputation in the repertoire. These acclaimed performances were fi lmed at Salle Pleyel in Paris during January 2010 and directed by Andy Sommer. The themes of fate and death pervade Tchaikovsky’s final symphonies. The composition of the fourth symphony coincided with the breakdown of Tchaikovsky’s marriage and a failed suicide attempt, and the sixth symphony premiered shortly before Tchaikovsky’s death. Both the DVD and Blu-ray discs include a bonus interview of Maestro Gergiev directed by Tommy Pearson.

IMPORTFollowing on his critically acclaimed disc of Brahms and Schoenberg, Shai Wosner’s second release for Onyx focuses on the music of Franz Schubert. Here he plays a selection of music including the composer’s two late sonatas in fabulous performances that are sure to enhance his rising-star status. These works are in many ways polar opposites. Written in 1825, a year when the composer’s health was robust and his fi nances in good order, the powerful, unfi nished sonata D840 is monumental, stark and monolithic. The sonata D850, written at a time in the composer’s life when he was broke, lonely and fi ghting with his publishers, is remarkable for its sunny disposition. This late masterwork was one of the few sonatas Schubert was able to publish during his lifetime and it brought him a very welcome payday of 300 fl orins.

IMPORTItalian instrumental music captivated eighteenth-century Britain with its tunefulness, drama and sheer beauty. On this disc, director Zak Ozmo and his group L’Avventura London offer fresh insights into favorite works by Corelli, Vivaldi and Albinoni and shed light on less known (but equally as beautiful) works by Geminiani and Paradisi. A special highlight of the disc is Ozmo’s imaginative arrangement of the quirky country dance “An Italian Rant.” Opella Nova’s digipack presentation includes a 36-page booklet with extensive notes and the CD was recorded by GRAMMY® award-winning engineer John Hadden.

DOMESTICOrange Mountain’s fourth volume documenting the concertos by Philip Glass features the world première recording of the composer’s 2010 Double Concerto for Violin, Cello and Orchestra, performed by violinist Tim Fain and cellist Wendy Sutter. It is an exciting tour-de-force with three orchestral movements enveloped in duets by the soloists. The second work on this disc is Glass’s fi rst piano concerto, the Tirol Concerto for Piano and Orchestra. It is performed by the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra with Dennis Russell Davies as conductor and soloist.

DOMESTICOur familiarity with Vivaldi’s music makes it a particular challenge to any soloist not only to measure up to the virtuosity of past performers, but also to bring to the performance something new. In the case of Elizabeth Blumenstock and the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, that “something new” is actually something very old and precious in its authenticity and faithfulness — a performance that would, without doubt, have pleased the Red Priest mightily. Blumenstock is widely admired as a performer of compelling verve and eloquence. She has played with Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra since 1981 as a regular soloist, concertmaster and leader. Blumenstock plays a 1660 Andrea Guarneri violin on loan from the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra Period Instrument Trust.

Giulini live in Berlin

The great conductor Carlo Maria Giulini’s answer to the question of what fascinated him about making music amounted to his Credo: “Music is a great miracle and a great mystery. Even a single note is a mystery, a miracle in itself. The note appears quite suddenly and as it is born, it has already passed away. Everything to do with music is fascinating — whether conducting or playing.” These important releases from Testament document a selection of Giulini’s live concert performances with the Berlin Philharmonic taken from radio broadcasts aired during the 1970s and 80s. All are in stereo and have been carefully remastered for optimal sound.

The Gnawa are the descendants of slaves brought to the Arab north from sub-Saharan Africa, and their music mixes central African rhythms with Arabian infl uences. Free-jazz master Archie Shepp fi rst met the group Dar Gnawa at the Essaouira Festival in 2000, and their deep musical and spiritual connection culminated in this album. Kindred Spirits is all about rhythm and communication, with the ultimate goal of exploring cultural connections.

IMPORTFile in: JazzHearts Wide Open, Israeli-born guitarist Gilad Hekselman’s third album, is a masterful exploration of the contrast and coexistence of simplicity and depth. Comprised of simple, singable melodies, these ten new compositions, even with their complex rhythms and multi-faceted harmonies, breathe a certain air of familiarity. Hekselman possesses an entirely original sound, and the songs on Hearts Wide Open are played with precision and passion by one of the fi nest groups of jazz artists on the NY jazz scene today.

“Mr. Hekselman has set himself roughly up in the line of Pat Metheny and Kurt Rosenwinkel, with a warm and clean guitar tone, clear articulation, crazily

extended improvisational ideas, speed when he needs it, an advanced under-standing of harmony, and the flexibility to go wherever his bands want.”

Legendary British jazz musician, bandleader, arranger and composer John Dankworth (1927-2010) took the twelve astrological signs of the Zodiac as inspiration for his glorious big band suite The Zodiac Variations, originally released on the Fontana label in 1965. Dankworth’s band comprised a who’s-who of jazz including such famed soloists as Kenny Wheeler, Clark Terry, Zoot Sims and Ronnie Scott. From two years later comes Dankworth’s The $1,000,000 Collection, which forms another important entry in the Dankworth canon. On this occasion the inspiration for Dankworth’s original compositions was derived from the world of painting and art, and the cream of Britain’s jazzmen were on-hand to perform Dankworth’s scores. Born in the 1970s, the jazz-rock genre was the most signifi cant and certainly the most controversial development in jazz since the free-jazz movement of the previous decade. The albums compiled here are two of Dankworth’s most signifi cant forays into the jazz-rock genre. 1972’s Full Circle and 1973’s Lifeline both feature an exciting blend of rock’s energy and electric instrumentation with jazz’s intricate harmonies and melodic contours.

IMPORTFile in: JazzThis essential Dutton Vocalion jazz reissue brings together two of the greatest American drummers with two of the greatest British drummers. Conversations, originally issued on Parlophone in 1972, captures the drumnastics of Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson and Kenny Clare driving along the Bobby Lamb-Ray Premru big band. Repercussion, issued in 1967 on EMI, throws the spotlight on Eric Delaney and Louie Bellson, who power their way through twelve tunes that include superb arrangements of numbers not normally associated with jazz including “Scotland the Brave” and “The British Grenadiers.”

IMPORTFile in: JazzJust Friends, originally released on EMI in 1965, features tenor sax masters — Paul Gonsalves and Tubby Hayes. Gonsalves, best-known as a member of Duke Ellington’s orchestra, and Tubby Hayes, considered one of the UK’s greatest tenor saxophonists, play seven superb examples of modern jazz. London Swings is a jazzy, big band set conducted and arranged by Johnny Scott. The music is centered on the city of London and features Scott’s inspired arrangements of famous numbers including “Chelsea Bridge,” “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square” and “London By Night.”

JAZZ

IMPORTFile in: JazzAmerican saxophonist and clarinetist Bennie Maupin came to prominence in the 1960s as one of the most distinctive new voices in jazz. After working with jazz greats including Roy Haynes, Horace Silver and Jack DeJohnette, in 1969 Miles Davis invited Maupin to participate in the sessions for Bitches Brew. From there, Maupin joined the ranks of the jazz elite, and in the early ‘70s formed an alliance with Herbie Hancock. This Dutton release marks the fi rst ever CD reissue of Maupin’s two late ‘70s albums — Slow Traffi c to the Right(1977) and Moonscapes (1978).

IMPORTFile in: SoundtrackBernard Herrmann conducts The London Festival Recording Ensemble on this album containing four intriguing orchestral arrangements — each showing a different face of the jazz genre. Best known as Alfred Hitchcock’s favorite composer, Herrmann wields the baton here on famous jazz infl uenced compositions by classical composers Darius Milhaud, Kurt Weill, George Gershwin and Igor Stravinsky. The Four Faces Of Jazz was produced by Raymond Few and originally released on London Records in 1973.
