Both György Ligeti and Robert Heppener belong to the generation of composers born in the 1920s that formed the basis for the post-war avant-garde. Lux Aeterna, famously used by Stanley Kubrick in his fi lm 2001: A Space Odyssey, marked the birth of a new musical language. Ligeti’s later Sonata for solo viola simultaneously evokes the polyphony of the fourteenth century and certain types of ethnic music. Heppener’s Im Gestein, a cycle of songs to poems by Paul Celan that was awarded the Matthijs Vermeulen Prize in 1993, is given its world premiere recording.
After seven weeks on the chart, peaking at No. 4, Richard Egarr’s Organ Concertos returns to the Billboard Top Classical Chart.

Herreweghe conducts Lassus
e Cantiones Sacrae are the swan-song of one of the great masters of the motet, crowning his life’s work. In them, Orlande de Lassus deploys with sovereign ease the essence of his art. e complex technique of vocal polyphony he employs illuminates the nuances of the text as closely as possible. In these works, we have the ideal balance between ‘head’ and ‘heart’ — a feature found in most of the greatest artistic masterpieces. Philippe Herreweghe has long been considered one of the foremost interpreters of the music of Lassus. Here he leads his hand-picked choral ensemble, Concerto Vocale, in defi nitive readings of these seminal works of the Renaissance choral repertoire.

“Magdalen College Choir represent the best of the British collegiate tradition.”— Fanfare
In 1480, provision was made at Magdalen for eight singing-men, four chaplains and 16 choristers, creating one of the oldest and largest choral foundations in late-medieval England. With the more recent addition of four clerks and two Organ Scholars, that tradition has been maintained to this day. The choristers are educated at Magdalen College School, while the academical clerks are all undergraduates at Magdalen reading a variety of subjects. The Director of Music, Bill Ives, still retains the ancient Latin title, Informator Choristarum (Instructor of the Choristers). Many notable musicians have held this post, including John Sheppard, Daniel Purcell (brother of Henry), Sir John Stainer, Sir William McKie and Bernard Rose. The main duty of the choir is to sing daily in the college chapel,. During the university term there are seven choral services each week. The choir also sings at a number of special occasions throughout the academic year, including the great May Day celebrations, an ancient tradition dating back to the 1500s. In recent years, Magdalen College Choir has sung in Japan, the USA, Hungary, Italy, Belgium and France. They have also featured on fi lm and television, most notably in Richard Attenborough’s acclaimed movie, Shadowlands. Other soundtracks and appearances include 20th Century Fox’s Ever After, Channel Four’s millennium production, Longitude and George Fenton’s score for the movie Deep Blue. In 2001, the Choir presented the fi rst public performance of a major new choral work, Ecce cor meum, written especially for them by Sir Paul McCartney. For harmonia mundi, the choir, with Fretwork, recorded With a Merrie Noyse, a programme of Orlando Gibbons, which was nominated for a Grammy® Award.
“Magdalen College choir sings with appropriate sensitivity and fervent spirit, with full and fl uent mastery of each work.” — ClassicsToday

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDIn 1961, the 59-year-old Maurice Durufl é put the fi nishing touches to the third and last version of his Requiem, composed fourteen years previously. The work is wholly, one might say consubstantially, built on the Gregorian melodies of the Mass of the Dead. The composer had already transcribed some of these themes for the organ, in works featured here as well. Hence this entire program underlines the artistic and spiritual coherence of Durufl é’s approach. Bill Ives leads the men and boys of the Choir of Magdalen College, Oxford and the players of the English Sinfonia in a glorious disc, rich in timbre and deeply spiritual.

Mendelssohn once said, “The most natural music of all occurs when four people go out together in the woods or in a boat, and carry the music with them and inside them!” These pieces for chorus, sparkling musical miniatures, are perhaps the fi nest illustration of this profession of artistic faith. Mendelssohn’s lovely choral music tends to get overshadowed by that of Brahms and by Mendelssohn’s own works in other genres. This disc makes a strong case for a reassessment of the musical merit of his work in this genre. Berlin’s RIAS-Kammerchor has established itself as a world-class ensemble which owes its reputation chiefl y to the performance of a cappella works. Led here by their new principal conductor, Hans-Christoph Rademann, the group continues its tradition of heartfelt music making.
Grieg’s music for cello
Alongside the Sonata Op.36 — one of the monuments of the repertoire for cello and piano — Emmanuelle Bertrand and Pascal Amoyel have transcribed some of the delightful Lyric Pieces as a sort of personal diary. In their own way, they retrace the life of Grieg, from the little Arietta of 1867 to the fi nal backward glance of Remembrances (1901). The program also includes two original pieces for this formation, the Intermezzo and Grieg’s own transcription of the Scherzo from his third violin sonata.

Matthias Goerne has received worldwide praise for his warm, fl uid baritone and his profound interpretations. Highly respected as a Lieder singer, he is a frequent guest at renowned festivals and prestigious venues like the Carnegie and Wigmore Halls. Goerne has embarked on an ambitious eleven disc Schubert Edition for harmonia mundi, which will be framed by concerts in important venues all over the world. This month marks the release of the second volume in the series. The repertoire speaks of death, the ‘Wanderer’ and of the relationship between Schubert and his poets. For this occasion the singer has called on two traveling companions who have left a lasting artistic impression on the world of lieder and Helmut Deutsch began his career as accompanist for Irmgard Seefried. He also spent twelve years in an intensive collaboration with Hermann Prey and has been the partner of many other celebrated singers. Eric Schneider has appeared notably with Christine Schäfer, Christiane Oelze and Stephan Genz. He is a regular guest with these partners at the Schwarzenberg Schubertiade, Salzburg Festival and the Tanglewood Summer Music Festival.

di The harmonia mundi
2009 marks the 200th anniversary of the death of Franz Joseph Haydn. e past few years have given musicians and music-lovers a chance to reassess a compositional genius who has been eclipsed by the likes of Mozart and Beethoven for far too long. To further that cause, harmonia mundi celebrates Haydn’s astounding musical achievements with a new, specially-priced series that will include both reissues and new releases. It assembles the work of harmonia mundi’s distinguished musicians in a series of interpretations that are on the cutting edge of musicological research, presented in elegant illustrated digipacks with extensive notes. Discover (or rediscover) the great works of the master who helped create what we now call the Viennese Classical style. Future releases will include symphonies with René Jacobs and string quartets with the Jerusalem Quartet.

In fact, at the beginning of the score of e Angels Arnell has written, “ e Angels is an abstract, symphonically structured work. e form is intricate and is as carefully considered as if the work had been designed for the concert hall. It is, in fact, a symphony.” e Sherlock Holmes inspired ballet e Great Detective is uproarious and supremely melodic and another glorious work unearthed and resurrected by Dutton Epoch. Both works are presented here for the fi rst time on CD.

e fi fth installment in Dutton Epoch’s ongoing series focusing on British light music features sumptuous works by Paul Carr and conductor Gavin Sutherland, along with the suite from Richard Addinsell’s incidental music for Jean Anouilh’s play Ring Round the Moon and orchestral delights by fi lm music legend Roy Budd and Francis Chagrin. e concertos by Gavin Sutherland (for clarinet) and Paul Carr (for oboe) are both real fi nds. Sutherland writes essentially in a lighter vein, taking a melodic route through a variety of idioms. Carr’s Oboe concerto, played by its dedicatee Nicholas Daniel, highlights the increasing reputation of this composer. Carr’s Air for Strings is uniquely compelling, an orchestral love song that bids to supplant Barber’s celebrated Adagio.
Epoch’s Light Music series continues
Flutist Anna Noakes has compiled this disc of rarely-heard music. McDowall’s e Moon Dances and Not Just a Place will delight all who have been captivated by Dutton Epoch’s previous McDowall releases. Yates’s two extended fl ute works, the Sonata and Sonatina, reveal a rewarding personal voice, while the occasional suggestions of Debussy-esque sonorities add to the music’s sensuous impact. e disc is closes with Piazzolla’s sultry tango Oblivion, heard here in José Bragato’s gorgeous arrangement for fl ute, cello and piano.
Canadian pianist Leslie De’Ath presents an unmissable and toe-tapping survey of the light-hearted and jazzy piano music of British composer Billy Mayerl. De’Ath’s virtuosity and light touch are on display throughout these twenty-four charming selections, all of which demonstrate his affi nity with Mayerl’s charming music. De’Ath points out in his typically eloquent liner note accompanying the CD, “His music is masterfully crafted and full of imaginative melodic, harmonic and rhythmic detail. But its great strength lies in its utter lack of pretence. is is light music at its fi nest.”

Founded in Vienna in 1912, this legendary ensemble was known for its fi rst six years as the Wiener Konzertvereinquartett and consisted of Adolf Busch, various second violinists, Karl Doktor and Paul Grümmer. In May 1919 it was reorganized as the Busch Quartet in Berlin, and in the autumn of 1920 gave its fi rst Beethoven cycle in the composer’s birthplace Bonn. e famous formation of Busch, his Swedish pupil Gösta Andreasson, Doktor and Grümmer was first heard in Amsterdam at the end of that year. Recognized as being among the 20th century’s greatest Beethoven interpreters, on this disc they are heard giving typically inspiring performances of the seventh and twelfth quartets, recorded during the 1930s and early ‘40s.

e Spanish conductor Enrique Fernández Arbós came from a family of military bandmasters and had been a child prodigy. He was celebrated at diff erent times as violinist, violin teacher, composer and conductor. After the First World War, he became associated with conducting modern Spanish repertoire. is release compiles various recordings Arbós made with the Madrid Symphony Orchestra during 1928, in which he championed then comparatively little-known Spanish music, many of the composers having been his friends. is disc features transfers from 78-rpm discs of German composers conducting their own music. e celebrated operetta composer Eduard Künneke conducts his Tänzerische Suite, a pioneering 1929 combination of jazz band and orchestra. In contrast, Franz Schreker conducts his Little Suite for chamber orchestra, again written specifi cally for the microphone in 1929. Musically intriguing, Werner Egk’s wartime ballet Joan von Zarissa is unknown outside Germany. Siegfried Wagner conducts his father’s “Prelude and Liebestod” from Tristan und Isolde, which crowns this fascinating compilation recalling a forgotten musical world.

Celebrated conductors Basil Cameron and Erich Leinsdorf are heard here in two magnifi cent readings of Sibelius symphonies. Cameron’s reading of the second symphony was admired in its day, even by comparison with versions by starrier names such as Koussevitzky and Ormandy. Erich Leinsdorf recorded Sibelius’s fi fth symphony in 1946. e choice of which was a good one as England had not had a new recording of the work since the old Kajanus and Koussevitzky sets of the 1930s. Leinsdorf was not regarded as being particularly a Sibelius specialist, but his approach — swift, unequivocal, in its conciseness perhaps showing the influence of Toscanini — met with a wholehearted response from the LPO and was counted a great success.

Of all the polyphonic choral music the Tallis Scholars have recorded, the early English style featured on these two discs, with its dazzling high treble parts and luminous sonorities, must rank among the fi nest work they have done to date. It is truly atmospheric — Henry VIII would have known this sound from childhood and may well have included some of the music recorded here at his coronation. Encompassing four discs, these two sets feature composers from John Browne to Robert White and off er the listener over fi ve hours of truly captivating music.

New recordings by the Takács Quartet have become important landmarks in the musical calendar. is second disc of Brahms string quartets looks set to repeat all the commercial and critical success of their fi rst. It took twenty years for the famously self-critical Brahms to release his Op. 51 string quartets for publication. Despite frequent requests, they were held back until they had reached his requisite standard of perfection. It is clear that Brahms’ struggle with the string quartet medium eventually led him to fi nd an intensely personal language for it, with an unmistakable originality of melody and texture. e supreme virtuosity and musicality of Takács Quartet is heard here in all its glory, shining new light on these evergreen masterworks.

Wilhelm Stenhammar was the most outstanding musical personality in Sweden of his time. As a pianist, he brought high-quality music-making to audiences throughout the country through several hundred solo recitals and chamber music concerts. As music director of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, he created Sweden’s fi rst truly professional ensemble. As a composer, he created some of the most important and carefully crafted music ever to come out of Sweden, ranging from symphonic works and operas to chamber music and lieder. is collection, featuring Martin Sturfält, explores the riches of Stenhammar’s music for piano. Of special note here is Nights of Late Summer, which was one of Stenhammar’s last works. The pastoral title and miniaturist structure belie the enormous emotional range of the piece. It is a deeply romantic exploration of moods of introspective gloom and wandering desolation. is beautifully played disc is the perfect introduction to Sweden’s ‘national composer’.

Roslavets’ fi rst violin concerto was thought to exist only in piano reduction form until 1989 when the full score was unearthed in the archives of the State Music Publishers in Moscow. It is an ambitious work, laid out on a large scale. Roslavets’ mastery of a leaner symphonic idiom, virtuosic and elegant, is immediately apparent. It ranks as one of the most important Russian works of its era. His second violin concerto was completed in 1936 and until recently it has remained in total obscurity. ese notes were heard for the fi rst time in Glasgow’s City Hall in January 2008, performed by Ilan Volkov and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and joined by the brilliant young violinist Alina Ibragimova. e performance on this disc is in fact the world premiere.
Hyperion’s virtually single-handed rehabilitation of the music of York Bowen (known in his time as ‘ e English Rachmaninov’), continues apace with this recording of the third and fourth piano concertos. Bowen’s third is a vigorous one-movement work with three well-defi ned
sections of varying tempos in fantasia style. e fourth concerto (said by Sorabji to be the greatest work for piano and orchestra ever written by an Englishman) is a large-scale, romantic, virtuoso work featuring impressionistic solo passages alternating freely with Straussian orchestral textures. Bowen considered the work his best composition for the piano and an important addition to the concerto literature. It has not been given a studio recording until now. e young British pianist Danny Driver, a Bowen specialist, gives a virtuoso performance with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Martyn Brabbins.

Angela Hewitt has taken time out from her impossibly busy solo concert schedule to record a dazzling chamber disc with one of the greatest young cellists of today. Daniel Müller-Schott’s rise to fame has been well documented in the world’s press. His fastidious, clean-lined, yet energetic playing is the perfect foil for Angela’s particular artistry. In their fi rst Hyperion CD together, they present their fi rst volume of Beethoven cello sonatas. Beethoven’s fi rst three cello sonatas astonished his contemporaries with their dramatically innovative qualities. Before he wrote them, there were virtually no works in which the cello fully broke away from its subservient role of basso continuo to become an equal partner to the piano. ey are works of extraordinary breadth and grandeur.

The inspiration for Ludovico Einaudi’s I Giorni was a 12th-century folk song from Mali about a hippopotamus who was cherished by the residents of a nearby village but killed by a hunter. “ e song,” writes Einaudi in his succinct liner note, “is sung as a lament for the death of a king or a great person or for the loss of a loved one.” e result is a tender & introspective set of fourteen piano pieces. is work was written after hearing the kora playing of Toumani Diabate whilst traveling in Mali.

SACD Hybrid / Stereo / DSDDohnányi has in recent years been unduly neglected, although at one time his music formed a regular element in concert programs. In part this neglect is due to the sheer success of ‘new music’ composers like Bartók and Kodály, while Dohnányi was seen as belonging to the past and the German tradition. is homage to Dohnányi, “ e Hungarian Brahms,” features the composer at the piano for his second piano concerto and Variations on a nursery song and the great Janos Starker in the Konzertstück for cello.
SACD Hybrid / Stereo & Multi-channel / DSDTo celebrate the group’s 120th anniversary, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra offers a new episode in the Mariss Jansons Mahler cycle: the majestic Symphony No. 5. e history of this world class orchestra and the Gustav Mahler composer are closely intertwined. It was Willem Mengelberg who championed Mahler’s music with his Amsterdam orchestra, and this music has retained a fi xed place been on their music stands ever since. Mahler with the RCO is always like coming home. In this recording Jansons underscores more than ever the Fifth’s narrative, poetic side.

John Eliot Gardiner’s Bach cantata series continues with this new release featuring cantatas for the eighth and tenth Sunday after Trinity. e set begins with a performance of BWV 178, Wo Gott der Herr nicht bei
uns hält, which was premiered in Leipzig in July 1724. Derived from the Gospel reading (Matthew 7:15-23), the cantata warns against hypocrites and false prophets. In contrast, hope and belief permeate the following two cantatas, BWV 136 Erforsche mich, Gott, und erfahre mein Herz and BWV 45 Es ist dir gesagt, Mensch, was gut ist. Next up is Bach’s fi rst Leipzig cantata for the tenth Sunday after Trinity, BWV 46, Schauet doch und sehet, ob irgendein Schmerz sei. Here the Gospel (Luke 19:41-48) tells us how Jesus predicted the imminent destruction of Jerusalem. e antithesis between God’s anger and mercy resurfaces in Bach’s two later cantatas for this Sunday; BWV 101 Nimm von uns Herr, du treuer Gott and BWV 102 Herr, deine Augen sehen nach dem Glauben! With their customary brilliance and expert musicianship, the Monteverdi Choir and the English Baroque Soloists triumph, making this the ideal next installment in what many have already come to regard as the fi rst choice of recorded Bach Cantata series.
“This is Bach at a very high level — a match for anything else currently available on disc.”— BBC Music Magazine

File in: World / Europe / PortugalEterno navegar is the title of Uxía’s new recording. Rooted in her native Galicia’s tradition and atmosphere, Uxía reshapes music sounds that binds countries such as Portugal, Brazil and Cape Verde and makes them her own. e album was produced by Uxía and Paulo Borges, a Portuguese pianist and composer from Azores Islands. The fifteen tracks of Eterno navegar showcase Uxía’s melodious and intimate voice. These excellent Lusophone musicians travel along the paths of little-heard Atlantic sounds, bringing their exquisite beauty to life once more. Special guests include Sara Tavares, Tito Paris, Jon Luz, Zeca Medeiros, Julio Pereira, João Afonso, Paulo de Carvalho and Ruben Santos, Anxo Quinto Pinto and Quim Farinha.

Río de los canasterosDiego Amador
World Village • 468081
File in: World / Europe / SpainFollowing last year’s release of Piano Jondo, flamenco-infl uenced jazz pianist Diego Amador is back with another infusion of richly improvisational Gitano soul. On Rio de los Canasteros (the title refers to a traditional livelihood of nomadic, rural-based Gitano tribes) the bandleader’s powerfully virile yet fl uid and imaginative piano is heard in fi erce, romantic interplay with guitars and vocals, plus blistering percussion and palmas (handclaps). Featuring guest turns from guitar master Tomatito, legendary cantaora (female singer) La Susi, Diego’s own brother Raimundo Amador, who is equally famed for his Gitano/blues-infl ected guitar and inclusive individuality, super-bassist Carles Benavent and the versatile Argentinean guitarist Luis Salinas, the album has a charged yet relaxed feeling, much like the atmosphere at a juerga, an informal jam session where anyone can join in and anything can happen. Lopsided, incessantly mutating rhythms are wreathed in soaring melodies that can shift in a heartbeat between urbane coolness and feverish emotional engagement. Each of the nine tracks is as redolent of all-night urban back-room gatherings as long centuries of roadside bonding -- and singed by a hard-won, borderline supernatural and specifi cally Iberian musical bliss known as duende.
“Self-taught, he has found a way to communicate the age-old flamenco musical culture via the grand piano.”— Audiophile Audition

File in: World / Europe / FranceMoussu T e lei jovents, the fi nest band ever to come from La Ciotat (!) return with another slice of Occitan wit and wisdom. Home Sweet Home is the band’s third proper studio album and continues in the same vein as their previous work – i.e., gloriously catchy, melodic, quirky, funny, dark, poignant, gritty. Singing as usual mainly in the Occitan language, the band again invoke the heat and intensity of Marseille and its neighbor, the band’s hometown, La Ciotat. Forever Polida was a huge surprise hit in 2006 and this new album is sure to increase the momentum.

File in: World / Eastern Europe / RomaniaBucharest Tango is a unique album, one that resurrects a lost music, the sound of Romanian Tango as played in Bucharest cafes and parks, restaurants and clubs, across the 1930s. Oana Catalina Chitu (pronounced Kitsu) and her musicians combine the lost tango songs of that era with the folk ballads of Maria Tanase (1913–1963; the Romanian Piaf ). Until now, no other singer of the younger generation from Romania has been able to approach both the tangos à la romanesque and Tanase’s ballads so authentically yet freely. Although Romania is a country with a rich musical tradition, a virus of cheap, electronic pop music has seized the nation post-revolution. Oana represents the cutting edge of a new generation of Romanians interested in the brilliant – now largely forgotten – musical traditions from a bygone age.
File in: World / Eastern Europe / BalkansRipe, bright and tasty as stuff ed peppers, La Cherga create 21st-century electro-roots music with a pan-Balkanic consciousness. La Cherga consist of six musicians, all from former Yugoslavia. ey came together in Germany and Austria as musicians seeking a new musical identity, sharing what one member calls a “Post Pessimist” philosophy. La Cherga (named after a Balkan rag rug, appropriate for these musical recyclers) began weaving a sonic collage, inventing a Balkan internationalist music & manifesto. eir sound draws on the best of both East and West, bringing together Balkan brass, jazz vocals, Jamaican grooves and electronic beats.

File in: World / Africa / EgyptAbdo Dagher was born in Egypt in 1936. He taught himself to play the oud when he was seven and a performance by a foreign soloist (possibly David Oistrakh) attracted him to the violin when he was ten. e greatest impact on Dagher’s musical life goes back to the religious music performed by the Sufi orders, which he learned in his childhood. Dagher was a member of several famous Arabic orchestras including the one that accompanied Um Kulthum, the best-known singer in Egypt and the Arab world in the 20th century. It was not until 1992 that he started performing his own compositions. In support of his eff orts to revive Arabic musical heritage, he received funding from the Egyptian Ministry of Culture.

File in: JazzTchavolo Schmitt was introduced to the guitar at the age of 6 by his mother; his father played the violin. He developed, with time, a virtuosity in the manouche style and his renown rapidly exceeded the limits of Alsace, his ancestral region. He became influential
among his peers, in particular at Porte de Montreuil or Chope des Puces in Saint-Ouen, legendary homes of manouche swing. In 1979, he became a professional musician, and in that year, after leaving Paris to return to his Alsatian roots, he joined the band “Hot Club da Sinti,” which included the violinist Wedeli Köhler, the guitarist Schmeling Lehmann, and the bass player Jani Lehmann. A single LP recording (now a collector’s item) was released in 1981. While his career paused during the 1980s, in 1993 he joined the band “Gypsy Reunion” (with, among others, Dorado Schmitt, Patrick Saussois and Gino Reinhardt). In 2000, he released the fi rst album under his own name, with the friendly support and the active participation of Romane. is album was followed in 2001 by Miri Familia.

Over the years, harmonia mundi usa’s monthly new release brochure has become a reference standard in the industry.
In spite of the recent downward trends that have caused others to cut back and compromise, we have continued to
offer high-quality printed graphics and consistently useful, informative content.
However, we are not blind to the ecologically wasteful nature of printing thousands of booklets a month, the majority
of which undoubtedly end up in landfi lls. In addition, the mailing itself creates a signifi cant carbon footprint. We could
make changes to the physical item such as moving to 100% recycled paper and non-toxic inks, but this would not solve
the problem completely and it would not adequately convey the exceptional quality of the goods we offer.
The answer is obvious, and we hear it loud and clear: go digital. We have been offering online PDF fi le downloads of our
release books for many years now and the popularity of this method of delivery has grown exponentially. So starting
with December 2008, we will permanently discontinue the printing and mailing of our monthly brochures.
STAY INFORMED
To guarantee that you continue to receive our new release information, we need to make sure we have your correct
