Handicapper’s Journal – Doug McPherson Sunday, June 30 th 2019 Race 1 #7 Rapid Beat Best Bet #2 Station Rock #5 Unyielding #6 Chestermere #7 RAPID BEAT tracked a rapid pace while racing on the rail in his seasonal debut on June 2, evening out in the stretch. He takes a significant drop for his second start of the season. #2 STATION ROCK looked dangerous but was outfinished when fourth by a length on June 9. He has been putting in consistently good efforts this season. #5 UNYIELDING was a wire to wire winner against $25,000 three year olds on May 18 after being claimed for $50,000 on debut. He drops in claiming price again, facing older foes for the first time here. #6 CHESTERMERE faced $40,000 foes on the turf on June 19 in his first start off of a $7,500 claim, dueling for the lead before tiring. He faces easier company here. Race 2 #5 Can’tcatchtheraxx #6 Sky Vision #4 Molinaro Deputy #1 Misguided Passion #5 CAN’TCATCHTHERAXX broke poorly, had some traffic on the turn and was unable to close well into a homestretch headwind on June 14. The blinkers are quickly removed. #6 SKY VISION made the lead but hung in the same June 14 race. She figures to be favoured again as she has in each of her three starts this season. #4 MOLINARO DEPUTY made a wide rally without threatening the top two on June 14. Two-for-53 mare has been putting in solid efforts this season. #1 MISGUIDED PASSION had a beautiful trip when winning on June 19, dropping back to last and rallying up the rail. There is some cheap speed in this race and with some good luck a similar trip could unfold for her here. Race 3 #1 Lothbrook #7 Gottoknowrightnow #5 Firehall #8 Victor’s Destiny #1 LOTHBROOK didn’t show much speed when kicking off his season for $23,500, was asked midway around the turn but was unable to close into a headwind. He may be able to improve his early position as he gains experience. #7 GOTTOKNOWRIGHTNOW exits the same race as Lothbrook, dueling for the lead while racing three wide and tiring in the stretch. The class drop should help. #5 FIREHALL makes his career debut as a four year old and is entered at a low level. Unraced dam has four other foals to race, all of which are winners but none that were particularly special. #8 VICTOR’S DESTINY made the lead in the stretch but was picked up by a foe who had a good inside trip on June 14. He makes his first start off of a $7,500 claim here. Race 4 #6 Bala Falls #8 Massey Hall #5 Frobisher Bay #1 Serengeti Cat #6 BALA FALLS showed ability as a juvenile, with a runner up finish behind eventual Stakes winner Souper Succes before winning on closing day. His 2019 debut came in a turf route, where he dueled for the lead before coming up empty in the stretch and was eased up on midway down the lane. A bar shoe was added that day and remains on here; may be able to return to form at a big price returning to a Tapeta sprint. #8 MASSEY HALL was able to secure the lead and powered away when beating a soft group of $10,000 maidens on debut. There is other speed to potentially put some pressure on him today. #5 FROBISHER BAY was very game in defeat on June 15, prevailing in an early speed duel before immediately being forced into another duel then being outfinished by a stalker who stayed on the rail until very late. #1 SERENGETI CAT returns on short rest after a non-threatening run against first level allowance foes last week, showing good finishing interest. Race 5 #7 Crumlin Time #5 Desert Poem #3 Bridlewise #6 Love Daddy #7 CRUMLIN TIME had a wide trip with some bumping on the turn when facing tougher on May 4, being eased up on in midstretch. The daughter of Sligo Bay had route success as a juvenile and makes her turf debut here. #5 DESERT POEM was fourth in a well spread out group of Ontario Sired/$40,000 foes on June 7. She puts in consistent efforts and should appreciate the class drop. #3 BRIDLEWISE finished sixth, a few lengths behind Desert Poem last time out. She took a few starts to find her best run last year. #6 LOVE DADDY rallied up the rail to win on May 24. Aside from Gypsy Jazz there may not be a ton of pace to close into here. Race 6 #2 Echo In the Forest #7 Forest at Dawn #5 Beach Bar #1 Conquest Bad Girl #2 ECHO IN THE FOREST has run better than in appears on paper in both of her starts this year, both in races with easy winners where she was not far beaten for place. She has some tactical speed and drops in class. #7 FOREST AT DAWN was outfinished after showing some speed in her June 1 debut at this price. She figures to contend again in a field with no standouts. #5 BEACH BAR is the first foal to race for a mare who won her career debut as a closer in a five furlong sprint. She got started in Ocala and has been training her since May. #1

Race 1 #7 Rapid Beat – Best Bet #2 Station Rock #5 Unyielding #6 Chestermere #7 RAPID BEAT tracked a rapid pace while racing on the rail in his seasonal debut on June 2, evening out in the stretch. He takes a significant drop for his second start of the season. #2 STATION ROCK looked dangerous but was outfinished when fourth by a length on June 9. Race 4 #6 Bala Falls #8 Massey Hall #5 Frobisher Bay #1 Serengeti Cat #6 BALA FALLS showed ability as a juvenile, with a runner up finish behind eventual Stakes winner Souper Succes before winning on closing day. CONQUEST BAD GIRL ran a decent fourth on opening day but returned a week later with a very wide trip on a rail favouring day. She has been off about two months and adds blinkers for this return.

Race 7 #7 Deesse Nike #1 My Cantata #9 Belle Danseuse #5 Liddyup #7 DEESSE NIKE had a wide trip when kicking off her season against a solid group of second level/optional claiming foes at Delaware. She ran several good races here last year and may find this to be easier company. #1 MY CANTATA returned from a poor winter at Gulfstream and scored an easy win in a $7,500 sprint on the Tapeta. She looks like the controlling speed. #9 BELLE DANSEUSE faced a tough group of $20,000 males on June 14 and was unable to close after getting a wide trip with the turf rail in Lane 5. She could make her presence felt with a better trip. #5 LIDDYUP was scratched out of a $20,000 sprint on June 21 in favour of waiting for this race. She tailed off late in the season last year but could be better after the layoff.

Race 8 #1 Souper Tapit #5 Pumpkin Rumble #6 Are You Kidding Me #4 Special Forces #1 SOUPER TAPIT won his second race over the Tapeta in as many starts when beating Mr Ritz by a nose in the Eclipse. He’s a stalker who may find himself on the lead, as aside from the galloping Final Copy, there isn’t much speed here. #5 PUMPKIN RUMBLE dueled with and bested stablemate Melmich to win the Valedictory at the end of last season. He appeared to be an improved horse last year and should be able to make his presence felt in his first start of the year. #6 ARE YOU KIDDING ME dropped in to face second level allowance foes two weeks ago but was outfinished by a US invader. Although winless at 10 furlongs, he is obviously classy and deserves consideration. #4 SPECIAL FORCES capped off last year with an easy second level allowance win when entered for the claiming price, then kicked off this season with a win in the same class running protected. He’s a young horse with potential and this is the obvious next step for him.

Race 9 #1 Conquistador #5 Mr. Diffley #2 Get the News #3 Matthews’ Orb #1 CONQUISTADOR showed ability in two starts as a juvenile, but has been ineffective in two starts since returning after a year off. He makes his first start since January and returns as a gelding. #5 MR. DIFFLEY made a wide rally and finished fourth on debut on June 2. He can build off of that effort with a better break. #2 GET THE NEWS last ran two weeks ago, showing speed on

the main track before being outfinished by an impressive first time starter. He raced well on the turf at Gulfstream this winter. #3 MATTHEWS’ ORB was a nose in front of Mr. Diffley on June 2. He looks competitive again.

Race 10 #4 Razeena #1 Bold Script #6 Speedy Soul #5 Intanga Rose #4 RAZEENA looks to break her maiden here. She finished third in the UAE Oaks in Dubai in February. In her North American debut she closed well over a sloppy track at Belmont to be second. If she can translate her dirt form to the synthetic she may be able to upset. #1 BOLD SCRIPT looked like a winner in the Woodbine Oaks before being picked up late by Desert Ride. She should be able to save some more ground today and is the horse to beat. #6 SPEEDY SOUL stalked the pacesetter before making the lead in the Woodbine Oaks but was outfinished and ended up third. The blinkers come off today. #5 INTANGA ROSE set the pace before giving way in the Woodbine Oaks. She will likely be forwardly placed again but may face pressure from Canadian Magic.

Race 11 #1 Spanish Express #5 San Nicola Thunder #6 Shakhimat #3 Magical Man #8 The Boss Factor #1 SPANISH EXPRESS just got up at the wire to win his seasonal debut in a solid group of $40,000 foes, attracting a claim. He has run several solid turf races. #5 SAN NICOLA THUNDER rebounded off of a poor race with a dead heat win in the Early Bird Starter Handicap alongside synthetic monster Don’t Be So Salty. In the past he has been a terrific turf horse. #6 SHAKHIMAT dueled for the lead before tiring in the Connaught Cup. He’s a multiple Stakes winner and should fit better with this group. #4 MAGICAL MAN was a well beaten fourth against a solid group when kicking off his season on June 9. He may improve in his second start off of the bench; there’s not much turf in the pedigree. #8 THE BOSS FACTOR beat three year olds in a first level allowance race on May 29, rebounding from a tough trip in the Woodstock. The unraced dam has produced one turf winner in three to start over it.
