on behAlf of The TArAnAki crickeT AssociATion (TcA) boArd of direcTors, iT Gives Me GreAT PleAsure To PresenT My firsT AnnuAl rePorT As chAirMAn.It has been a good year for cricket in Taranaki. Player numbers have generally remained steady after the increase in numbers last season. Finances remain sound with another healthy surplus. There have been some spectacular highlights which I mention below. The main disappointment has been the weather, but we learn to live with that in Taranaki.

Highlights

Congratulations to Tom Bruce on making the T20 Black Caps team. Tom is a credit to Stratford and to Taranaki. He has made a great start to his international career averaging 34.66 with a strike rate of 131. He was also named Central Districts T20 and players’ player of the year. I wish him all the best for 2017/18 as he strives to cement his T20 spot and challenge

for inclusion in the one day and test teams.

Congratulations to Neil Sulzberger who was awarded the Bert Sutcliffe Medal for Services to New Zealand Cricket. In Taranaki we all know what a treasure we have in Neil but it was fantastic to see him receive this national recognition. The award was presented live on TV and Neil performed brilliantly with a great plug for our beloved Pukekura Park.

FoR THe YeAR enDinG 30 APRil 2017

The CD Stags made the T20 McDonalds Super Smash final hosted at Pukekura Park. It was a great occasion with a sell out crowd and Taranaki once again showed New Zealand what we and Pukekura Park can do when given the opportunity.

1st Class Cricket

Again this year we had a full complement of Central Districts games with one hosted at Yarrow Stadium and five (including the final mentioned above) at Pukekura Park. There were also three 50 over Ford Trophy Games at Pukekura Park including a preliminary final in which a Tom Bruce century assisted CD to a win by 48 runs.

The Board have a goal to bring as many of these and higher level games to Pukekura Park as possible and the success of these games in the last few seasons is certainly helping this cause.

Competitions

This season was the first in charge for John McElroy as our new competitions Director and he, Travis and the other members of the competitions sub-committee have done a good job. The Competitions portfolio always

throws up some sticky issues and this year has been no exception. John has rolled up his sleeves and made the tough decisions. You will never please all the people all the time but it is pleasing for me to see that John in general has the support of clubs and players.

I congratulate all winners of our senior competitions as mentioned in John’s report.

We have ongoing issues with the improvement of our artificial and grass wickets. This is necessary not only for health and safety reasons but also for the skill development of our players. It is pleasing that improvements are being made and further improvements planned by many of our clubs.

Revital Fertilisers Taranaki Men’s Team

The men’s team had a solid year. In the Chappell Cup they beat Marlborough and then had a rain off when in a dominant position against Manawatu. Manawatu advanced to the final based on their superior placing in 2015/16. Taranaki won the play off for third against Nelson.

Taranaki was unlucky not to win the Furlong Cup and with it the right to challenge for the Hawke Cup. They needed to secure first innings points against Hawkes Bay but failed to do so after having them 9 for 157 chasing 161.

Thanks to Peter Ingram who continues to do a good job as Representative Director.

Thanks to Debu Banik, coach, Debu, Ali Jordan and David O’Sullivan, selectors and Doug Proffit, manager. It is very pleasing to note that the same support team will be in place for the upcoming season but with the addition of Jamie Watkins as assistant coach.

Thanks to all our players this season. Taranaki continues to punch above its weight and you have all contributed.

I particularly note those players who received our Representative Trophies and those who have represented Central Districts this season. These achievements are all noted in Peter’s report.

Women’s Representative

It was also a good season for our Women’s team who came second in the Mike Shrimpton Trophy.

Our women’s director Gill Hurley has reported fully in her report. Thanks go to Aimee Watkins, coach and Peter Wisnewski, manager and to all players who like the men have all contributed to Taranaki continuing to pull above our weight.

I also acknowledge the player achievements and awards listed in Gill’s report.

Age Group Representative and Development

This is reported on by Gill Hurley in respect of the girls and Keith Borrell as our age group and representative Director. As can be seen from their reports we had a full and successful program.

The highlights were; the U17 team winning their tournament, the U18 Girls coming runner up in both the T20 and 40 over formats and Kaylum Boshier captaining both the New Zealand under 18s and the CD under 19s. Congratulations to the players and coaches involved.

This has been Keith’s first year as Director and he has made a tremendous start.

As regards Development generally please note that for the first year Jamie’s Coaching and Development report has been included in the AGM materials. Jamie has always provided annual reports to the Board of this quality. We have decided to publish

Page 8: H HHHH H HHHH H Cricket H · TARANAKI CRICKET ASSOCIATION 2017 ANNUAL REPORT 05 FoR THe YeAR enDinG 30 APRil 2017 The CD Stags made the T20 McDonalds Super Smash final hosted at Pukekura

his reports now and in future. I’m sure you can appreciate the depth of our development programs and the great work that Jamie and his team put in.

School Cricket

Keely Wisnewski has had another great year as director of School Cricket. There continue to be ongoing modifications to competitions and rules which are working well and have general support. Player numbers remain strong. I congratulate all of the teams mentioned in her report who have won competitions. I also congratulate the NPBHS team who won the National Junior Secondary School Boys Tournament in March.

I also thank all members of the North and South Junior Subcommittees for their hard work in running our junior competitions.

For the future, NZ Cricket has announced that it is developing modified formats for juniors which will be standardised across New Zealand over the next few years commencing with the 2018/19 season. It will be challenging for us to modify the formats that we run. However the initiative is very welcome as it will provide improved formats, pitch and boundary lengths and ensure the game remains fun and exciting for all ages.

Finance and Sponsorship

Greg Shearer will separately present his finance report. Greg is completing his second year as Finance Director and is fully up to speed and doing a great job.

As regards to sponsorship we have a large list of sponsors and I thank each and every one of our sponsors listed in the AGM materials. No matter how great or small their contributions, each of our sponsors have a stake in Taranaki Cricket and are very

important to us. Our major sponsor is Revital Fertilisers. They have just come to the end of a three year sponsorship agreement and I thank them for the significant funding they have provided over that time. We are currently talking about the next three years!

This year we also had a new significant sponsor in Powerco. They too have signed up for three years. We certainly appreciate their support and I thank Powerco for their present and continuing sponsorship.

Apart from sponsorship our major funders this season were Community Trust, NZ Cricket, Grassroots Trust, Southern Trust, Lion Foundation and KiwiSport. I also note that Taranaki Electricity Trust funds significant cricket coaching and awareness programs into the Central Taranaki area. I thank all of these funders, without whom we simply could not operate.

I also thank the New Plymouth, Stratford and South Taranaki District Councils for the role they play with the provision of sports grounds to TCA and to our Clubs. Their role is vital to our operation. I particularly thank NPDC for the co-operation and support they provide TCA in respect of cricket at Pukekura Park.

The Board

The retirement of Neil Sulzberger left a very big hole to fill. However I have been very well supported with a fantastic group of current directors and by our full time Administrator, Travis Stewart. Travis has stepped up tremendously this year. I have not been able to devote anything like the time to TCA business that my predecessor did and Travis’ workload has increased accordingly. I can’t thank Travis enough for his time, effort, energy and skill.

I also thank all of my fellow Directors.

I note with some sadness that our Women’s Director, Gill Hurley, is not standing for re-election. Gill has served Taranaki’s female cricketers extremely well over the last three years. She has overseen the creation of a girl’s T20 competition on Monday nights, a new U13 girl’s age group team and KiwiSport funded programs targeting girls in schools. We now have much better player depth than we did have and Gill has greatly improved Taranaki Women’s cricket over the last three years. I’m sure Gill would be the first to admit, however, that there is much more to be done and our new Women’s Director will need to maintain the momentum that Gill has created. Thank-you for your contribution Gill. You will be missed.

Peter Ingram is the other Director retiring by rotation. He is offering himself for re-election and hopefully I will be welcoming him back following elections.

Umpires and Scorers

We remain very well served by our umpires and scorers. In general our umpires are very highly regarded by our players and players are always very pleased to have official umpires for their games.

We can always do with more umpires. Anyone who has any interest in this regard should become involved.

We also need more scorers. In an ideal world we would have a dedicated scorers for all of our Premier games.

Helen Foreman

This season TCA employed Helen on a casual basis as a school cricket support person. This has worked out extremely well with Helen having taken over a lot of administrative tasks from many of our directors as well as from Jamie and Travis. This has enabled us all to work more efficiently, has reduced the burden of the role

Page 9: H HHHH H HHHH H Cricket H · TARANAKI CRICKET ASSOCIATION 2017 ANNUAL REPORT 05 FoR THe YeAR enDinG 30 APRil 2017 The CD Stags made the T20 McDonalds Super Smash final hosted at Pukekura

of School Director in particular and has helped us all cope better without Neil’s time and dedication. Helen has also performed her tasks at significantly less cost than we had budgeted for. Thank you Helen, for your dedicated and efficient work.

Looking Forward

In May the Board had a strategic planning workshop facilitated by Guy Honnor of Sport Taranaki and attended by representatives from NZC and Central Districts. We are currently working on a draft strategic plan which we intend to circulate for feedback to all clubs, life members, sponsors and other stakeholders shortly.

We hope that the plan will have a uniquely Taranaki Cricket flavour to it and that it will assist us to focus on our medium to long terms goals.

One of the treasures that we identified during the workshop was Pukekura Park. We need to ensure that we continue to get the amount of high level cricket at the park that we currently get. That means that we need to continue to develop TCA’s assets in respect of the Park. We need to upgrade the sightscreens and the scoreboard. We also need additional training wickets added to the block. The Board is currently working on all of these matters.

Ideally we would like to see the blackcaps play at Pukekura Park. That will be difficult and it is at least a 10 year plan but the Board intends to take steps to investigate what needs to be done to bring the blackcaps here.

March 2019 will mark the 125 year anniversary of the date of the meeting which led to the formation of TCA. We are already planning our Jubilee Celebrations for Taranaki Anniversary weekend of 2019. Please mark your diaries. We want you all involved. We have a working party of eminent TCA administrators and former administrators already in place.

If you want to help, or if you have any ideas for the weekend, please get in touch with any of the members of the working party, namely; Neville Frampton, Neil Sulzberger, Angela Buckland and Travis Stewart.

Conclusion

In its 123rd year TCA remains as strong as ever. We are very well served by our Directors and by our employees. TCA was formed to foster the growth and development of cricket in this province and, although there are always areas we must strive to improve, cricket continues to thrive in Taranaki.

FINANCE DIRECTOR'S REPORTGReG sHeAReR

2017 hAs been AnoTher successful yeAr froM A finAnciAl PersPecTive, And The AssociATion reMAins in Good heArT finAnciAlly.

The TCA recorded a Net Surplus Before Depreciation of $38,009, slightly below the previous year. After deducting depreciation of $21,574, the final Net Surplus was $16,435.

Our Statement of Financial Position shows we have Cash in the Bank of $58,223 as well $230,000 on Term Deposit . This financial situation would be the envy of many other District associations around the country and the position has been a result of the good governance and conservatism shown by the Board over a number of years. The TCA Board has a policy that the association should have around 50% of annual turnover in cash reserves. This is prudent financial management and allows the Board to operate effectively whilst retaining a financial buffer

To fund our operations, TCA is very reliant on a number of funders for Income, including our Major Association Central Districts as well as a number of community organisations and gaming trusts funders. Although we are confident

this status quo will continue, we cannot be complacent and would be in a vulnerable situation if some of our major funding was discontinued.

In 2017, income from grants & donations was slightly higher than the previous year. Coaching and tournament income was also up, due to addition of another couple of junior representative teams, and the sale of clothing items.

In terms of expenses, many of these are consistent from year to year. The major increases were in the areas of Age Group Cricket and Coaching and Development. These increases stemmed from the fielding of additional junior teams and the increased costs associated with tournaments and coaching time.

A successful Promotions outcome was aided by a number of additional games at Pukekura Park, including a packed-out televised 20/20 final.

In an effort to simplify our financial processes further and to achieve greater efficiency, we have recently implemented the Xero financial package. Use of this package is widespread in the accounting community and we look forward to reap the benefits of simplified account processing and enhanced financial reporting.

Given our financial position the Board have decided to leave Affiliation Fees unchanged for the upcoming season.

We must though be mindful of various items of upcoming expenditure, both maintenance and capital. The Sulzberger Centre is in need of a new surface and other potential items

include sightscreens at Pukekura Park as well as work on the Scoreboard/Scorers area and addition of practice pitches.

The relocation of TCA’s offices to the Paritutu Bowling Club in late 2015 has proven to be a successful move, giving TCA staff a bit more space as well as the rental terms being very favourable. During the year Helen Foreman joined our staff on a part-time basis, assisting with junior cricket and other administrative tasks as well as assisting Travis at Pukekura Park games. Helen has been a welcome and popular addition to the team and added some “gender diversity”.

Many thanks to Travis Stewart for his ongoing administrative support and production of monthly accounts and variances and to Travis and Russell Wilson for the support and challenge they provide as members of the Finance Committee in our efforts to provide strong custodianship of the Association’s finances. I’d also like to thank Neil Sulzberger for his assistance in transitioning me into my Finance role and providing me with a lot of the background information.

Again we extend our appreciation to Armstrong Fleming who provide financial services to TCA and produce our Annual Accounts; and to Staples Rodway, who undertake the “Independent Review” of the annual accounts. Your support is highly valued.

There is a continuation of a hard work culture that we have in Taranaki. Some players only had Christmas and New Year’s Day off over the entire holiday period, this shows how deeply these players want to perform well for Taranaki and make the next level.

A new focus for me as Representative director is Communication with clubs. All teams will have the chance to give feedback of who from other teams have impressed them. This will be done through their Captains of each of the Premier teams to Debu Banik at least a couple times a Season. Not always will players who you believe should be will be selected for the Representative side as the final decision will be that of Debu Banik and his Selectors. If this is done correctly, then we can only get stronger.

REVITAL FERTILISERS PREMIER COMPETITION

ONE DAY COMPETITION

Eight Premier teams played a full limited overs round, with the semi-finals & final completed prior to Christmas. The final was played on December 11th at Pukekura Park between NPMU & NPOB, in a match that had a delayed start due to overnight rain, & therefore reduced to 42 overs. NPOB were victorious in the Revital Fertilisers one-day competition.

TWENTY20 KNOCKOUT COMPETITION

The popularity of this competition was evidenced by the fact that the Eight Premier sides were joined by Auroa & Pihama. This generally mid-week competition was split into two pools of five teams. The crossover semifinals were contested between Stratford v NPMU & Woodleigh v NPOB. The final was contested at Pukekura Park with NPOB proving too strong for Stratford.

TWO DAY COMPETITION

The Premier two day competition is Taranakis premium competition, played by the eight Premier sides, consisting of a full round with the finalists identified after the semi-finals have played out. As per previous years the final was contested over three days, this year Inglewood played Woodleigh at Pukekura Park on the

24th, 25th & 26th March 2017. This match was absolutely ruined by the weather, with just over one days play possible. Woodleigh were the highest points qualifier going into this match, & were declared Revital Fertilisers Champions for the 2016-17 season.

TARANAKI ELECTRICITY TRUST SENIOR COMPETITION

Woodleigh agreed to join the senior grade to make a six team competition on the condition that its home matches started at 12.30pm. All other matches began at the usual 10.30am unless decided by mutual agreement. All other teams must be thanked for allowing this condition, which was for the betterment of the senior competition. Three rounds were played, culminating with semi-finals & the final played at Pukekura Park on the 18th March. It was a repeat of last years final, an all South Taranaki affair between Auroa & Pihama, with Pihama prevailing & winning the TET Senior Competition.

BUDGET RENT A CAR NORTH TARANAKI LOWER GRADES

The North T20 Competition consisted of seven teams, down from the eleven teams last season. The final, which was the curtain raiser to the Premier T20 final was contested between the Bell Block Gladiators & Waitara with Bell Block the winners.

The North 2nd Grade & 3rd Grade, consisting of sixteen teams in total, were split into two groups of eight teams, playing one full round. The top four of each group played off for the 2nd Grade North title, & the bottom four from each group, playing off for the 3rd Grade title. The winners of each then went forward to the Taranaki finals against their South counterparts.

The winners of the 2nd & 3rd Grade Competitions were the Merrilands Mandrills & NPOB Stars 2nd XI. respectively.

DB BREWERIES SOUTH TARANAKI LOWER GRADES

Seven teams contested the south lower grades this year. One round of T20 was played with Patea & Stratford White contesting the final. Patea were comfortable winners over Stratford. This was then followed by a full round of 40 over cricket after Christmas. Semi-finals were played between 1V2 & 3V4. The winner of 1V2 was Midhirst & so they qualified to go straight through to the Taranaki 2nd Grade final. The loser played the winner of 3V4, & Stratford White prevailed to go through to contest the Taranaki 3rd Grade final.

TARANAKI LOWER GRADE FINALS

The Taranaki 2nd Grade & 3rd Grade

finals were contested on the 11th & 12th March respectively at Pukekura Park. Both matches were restricted by Taranaki's fickle summer weather, with the 2nd Grade title restricted to 20 overs & the 3rd Grade 32 overs.

The DB Breweries 2nd Grade final was won by the Merrilands Mandrills, defeating Midhirst.

The Budget Rent a Car 3rd Grade Final was won by Stratford White, defeating NPOB Stars 2nd 11.

TARANAKI UMPIRES

TCA are committed to the TCUSA, supporting & assisting in recruitment wherever possible. Currently, Taranaki has a good number of quality umpires. There is no doubt that players enjoy the presence of umpires, that bring a neutral attitude, & defuse potential conflict from time to time. Long may this continue.

GENERAL

NZC is putting a lot of importance on the Health & Safety of our game. To that end the 36 Artifical wickets under TCAs jurisdiction have been inspected this season. It is pleasing to report that generally they are in good repair, with only one condemned earlier in the season, which has since been resurfaced. Clubs are reminded of their responsibilities in this area. Grass wickets are also under scrutiny, & there are a number that need

attention. TCA is prepared to support clubs to achieve top grass wickets, which allows players to express their skills confidently.

Pre-season & end of season debriefs are an important link to TCA, to ensure we are delivering a range of competitions, rules etc. to meet the needs of the wide demograph of player from social to competitive. I would like to thank all clubs for their positive participation in these meetings.

NZC has now made it mandatory for every player to be registered via CricHQ. Again thanks to clubs for engaging in the process.

Governance

This has been my first year on the Board, it has been challenging but enjoyable, & I would like to thank all Board Members & Travis Stewart (Administrator) for their support.

Thanks to Greg Alexander & Steve Cunningham, competition committee members, although they aren’t called upon often, are dedicated to the cause.

The squad was fortunate to have Aimee Watkins on board as player/coach this season. Aimee put in a tremendous amount of work with the squad and this showed through in the results achieved in the Mike Shrimpton trophy competition. The team was placed 2nd overall, which was a great achievement considering the last placing in the 2015/2016 season.

Having Aimee on board as a player/coach was beneficial to the team as she has amazing knowledge, experience and high standards to pass on to the girls. Aimee certainly led by example on the field.

The team led by Aimee (coach), Peter Wisnewski (manager), and Kate Baxter (captain) worked efficiently together, the season ran smoothly with great communication.

The leadership team had great support from TCA.

The pre-season started on August 31st with players attending planning, goal setting, skills and drills training at the indoor centre for the first six weeks of the season.

The team hit full pace with a warm up match against a Wellington development side in Levin in October. This match was a very beneficial overnight trip and set the tone for the rest of the competition.

Coach – David Simpson Managers – Gill Hurley/Keely Wisnewski/Peter Wisnewski

A Large number of this team were also involved with the Taranaki women’s squad so were fortunate enough to have a good amount of cricket early on in the season and were well prepared for the tournament in January.

Everyone in the team contributed at different times throughout this competition. The girls had an outstanding tournament and made it through to both the T20 and the 40 over finals.

Unfortunately, two finals on the last day of tournament proved physically and mentally too tough for the girls and they ended up second in both tournaments.

There were some personal achievements made through out the week and selections were announced on the last day:

• TournamentMVP–TailaHurley

• Tournamentstopbatswomen– Taila Hurley

• MostImprovedintheTaranakiteam– Lydia Proffit

Players selected for the Central Regions Under 18 team:

• KelseyHusband

• MoniqueRees

• LydiaProffit

The girls Travelled to Wellington to represent CD, Monique and Taila were then named in the tournament team

Under 15’s

Coach – David Simpson Manager – Kate & Stu Chapman

Endless work went into recruiting players for this age group as we really lacked numbers at the start of the season. With only six regular players from last year there was a lot of new faces. It was great to see school girl cricketers stepping into representative level and proving themselves worthy of selection. The senior members of this team stepped up and showed outstanding leadership and support throughout the season. Dave put a lot of time getting this team up skilled and ready for tournament but unfortunately the weather did not play its part and they only got through two and a half games.

Great excitement for Caitlin O’Sullivan and youngster Jessie Hollard chosen in the Central Districts Under 15 team.

Under 13’s

Coach – David Simpson Manager – Nicola Steel

Exciting for Taranaki to have a new age group team represented at the Wairarapa Tournament this season.

Taranaki sent a very young team compared to all the other associations but we all agreed that to develop these players they need a tournament situation to improve and learn the game.

These young girls continued to grow from strength to strength throughout the week as they improved their skills and game knowledge.

Although not achieving any outstanding results at the tournament the team did manage to come away with a win on the last day.

This is definitely an area which we need to target for the development of women’s cricket and for the future of Taranaki cricket.

In regards to this team I feel we need to get a T20 competition running in the fourth term of school so the squad can be selected early and the girls

will get a lot more coaching before tournament.

• MostValuablePlayer– Grace Foreman

• MostImprovedPlayer– Caitlin Marshall.

T20 COMPETITION

This competition was successfully run each Monday night at Francis Douglas Memorial College.

The girls paid $30 for a six-week competition and were given team shirts, they were split up into four evenly matched 8 aside teams.

Each player had to bowl at least two overs.

It was fantastic to see the girls improving each week as their confidence grew playing other girls of the same ability.

Players from the Under 18 team Aimee Wisnewski, Taila Hurley, Lydia Proffit and Nellie Chapman coached and umpired these girls each week and offered the girls their own knowledge of the game.

Overall a very successful season for all teams involved in Taranaki Cricket.

This is my final report as Women’s Director, I leave Taranaki Cricket with the feeling I have achieved my goals of getting more young girls involved in cricket, I wish the next Director all the best and have no doubt they will be successful. They are lucky enough to have great support from members of the TCA board and positive parents helping out with running, coaching and managing the above teams.

Thank you to all the wonderful people running TCA, the time, energy and passion you put into the committee is outstanding. I wish you well.

Unfortunately the season was plagued by our fickle weather which hampered some tournament preparation but the results were still very pleasing in spite of this. It was also good to be able to provide games for two development teams in the U11 and U14 age groups.

The managers and coaches continued their great work ensuring the season ran smoothly and it was pleasing to see all age group representative teams kitted out in a training uniform which looked really professional, especially when a number of teams were preparing to play at the same venue.

2016/17 AGE GROUP PROGRAM

This year TCA ran the following boys age group teams:North U11's: Development: Manager Phil Gard, Coach Chad Quinney.South U12's: Manager Nicola Nelley, Coach Ben Barrow.

North U12's: Manager Shaun Darth, Coach Mattie Thomas.U13's: Manager Jason Elder, Coach Kurt Leuthart.U14 Development: Manager Mitch Graham, Coach Kyle Pillay.U15's: Manager Hamish Logan, Coaches Debu Banik and Doug ProfittU17's: Manager Kurt Leuthart, Coach Jamie Watkins.

Results were as follows:North U11's – 3 wins, 3 losses. South U12's – 5 wins, 5 losses.North U12's – 11 wins, 1 loss. U13's – 4 wins, 8 losses.U14 Development – 5 wins, 7 losses.U15's – 4 wins, 1 loss.U17's – 7 wins, 1 loss.

These results included the Taranaki Under 17's winning the Central District Under 17 tournament in Napier which was an excellent result.

I would like to thank all the coaches of the age group teams for the work they did with the boys, their efforts were well rewarded with a number of the on field performances. In addition to this I would like to give a really big thank you to all the volunteer managers who took time out of their busy schedules to ensure the smooth running of each teams program. Without the time and effort put in by these managers we wouldn't have the well organised and turned out teams that we do have.

Another special thanks should also go to Helen Foreman who has been a real asset in her new role in the TCA office. She has ensured the rep season has gone smoothly for all involved taking

care of a lot of those administration such as loading games onto Crichq, putting results on the website and sorting out uniforms, taking a lot of pressure off the rest of us.

Development Program

The continued success of Taranaki Teams at age group level can be contributed to the continued investment that TCA puts into coaching and player development. This investment is a substantial amount of the TCA budget but shows a continued commitment to Taranaki schools and our young up and coming cricketers.

As a result of this investment we have seen a large number of Taranaki representative players in the Central Districts age group teams with Mathew Allen and Finbar Moriarty selected in the CD U17 team and Kaylum Boshier, Josh Borrell, Luke Dravitski, Davis Mills and Taylor Williams all selected in the CD U19 team. Special mention must be made of Kaylum Boshier who not only captained CD U19 but also went on to be selected for, and captained, the New Zealand Under 18 team.

A lot of recognition must go to Jamie Watkins and his team of coaches as the quality coaching and development programs that this team run continues to see Taranaki Teams perform to a high standard at age group level and has contributed greatly to the large number of boys gaining higher honours.

North Taranaki Primary Schools Cricket (NTPSC)

Primary school player numbers competing in Kiwi, Primary and Intermediate competitions remain steady in North Taranaki.

While strong player numbers is positive, the problem surrounding availability of grounds and the fairness of home and away matches has been ongoing issue for some time. A think tank lead to trialing, during Term Four, a ‘Kiwi cricket hub environment’ with TCA coaching staff being employed to attend to practice sessions.

See Development Officer Jamie Watkins report for full details.

I see this initiative as being very successful, meeting the objectives that we hoped to establish: to alleviate ground issues, as well as up-skill volunteer coaches with the idea that improved coaching will pass enjoyment and skills onto the players.

Changes to the Primary Competition rules format have been to make them more transparent and user friendly. Similarly, the grade names have been changed (see above) to make the grade intentions more obvious.

Congratulations to the following teams on winning their respective grades in Term One:

Congratulations to the above winners.

Player numbers fluctuate between terms one and four so competition adjustments have been made to accommodate this.

Term Four 2017 will see the reintroduction of Division Two as a 30 Over competition grade, allowing for a fourth division in Term One as the Social T20 Grade.

Like Primary Schools Cricket, the rules format has been modified.

• Therehavebeensomemodificationsto player eligibility rules and competition formats.

• ApopularnewruleinDivision3 has been introduced. “No player may bowl their third over until all bowlers have bowled at least two overs.” The objective is to keep all players involved and to maintain and improve player skills.

• Fullreportcardswillbearequirement for all grades – the failure to do so will result in no allocation of points.

In all School Competitions NZ Cricket are asking that registrations be entered digitally through CricHQ. Travis will be available to offer support for those that need it and TCA will run a training night if the demand is there.

South Taranaki Junior Cricket

This year we have had a total of 15 teams in the South Taranaki Cricket competition, with teams ranging as far north as Opunake and Stratford, and as far south as Patea. Even with the prospect of travelling a distance to games, it has been great to see schools and caregivers enter teams in and support the competition. With ten teams in the B division, we have also had a good number of new cricketers take up the sport for the first time. This year the games were affected by a very wet and cold beginning to the year, resulting in a number of abandonments in the first

few weeks. We hope this translates to a warmer final term, so we can complete the competition. We currently have Stratford leading the Div 1 competition, closely followed by St Joseph's Primary Opunake in second. In Div 2, the Hawera Cricket Club is currently in first place, heading off Kaponga who is in second.

Again, thank you to all those people who make Schools Cricket happen.

Well done to Richard Hooper for his many first class appointments and two week stint in South Africa. A future test umpire we would like to think.

The concept of 16 overs per hour was successful with very few problems maintaining the over rate.

Congratulations to Woodleigh taking out the three day premier final, although badly affected by the weather, Woodleigh were in a commanding position when stumps were drawn.

Finally thanks to TCA Administrator Travis Stewart for his ongoing support of both financial and administrative matters.

Coaching and Development REPORTJAMie WATKins

The following report highlights the work done in the coaching and development programmes run by Taranaki Cricket, and provides in depth information and statistics on the time and resources allocated to the programmes.

The NZC Development Programme has now been running for 12 years in Taranaki and the framework that has been put in place over this time has created a structure that allows for opportunities across all levels of the game for clubs, schools, players, coaches and volunteers.

Funding and sponsorship is crucial in the running of cricket as grassroots

levels, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain longer term commitment from sponsors due to the current economic environment. We greatly value the support of our sponsors and funders which allows us to provide a high level of coaching and support to all levels of our game.

From a coaching and development section point of view it is hugely important that we continue to run quality programmes to attract people into the game, and most importantly retain them through to high performance and adult club teams.

Development Inititatives

SUPERSTAR CRICKET ACADEMIES

The ‘Superstar Cricket Academy’ programme was run at 4 centres throughout Taranaki, with 160 children taking part in the introductory skills programme over 6 sessions. The centres were run at New Plymouth, Stratford, Hawera and Inglewood on Friday evenings with the majority of the sessions completed before the Christmas break allowing children to move up into more traditional modified formats in the new school year.

This programme continues to be a very important introductory experience for both children and parents alike, a good quality programme which is well organised provides the platform to retain these children into the more traditional school and club team formats.

SCHOOL AND JUNIOR CRICKET INTITIATIvES

The Schools programme continued in modified format this year with 14 schools involved in the Super Skills Programme. Each school completed a 3 sessions progressive skills programme, and a total of 900 children were involved in the programme across these 14 schools. The programme was run throughout Term 4 2016 and Term 1 2017.

TCA maintained a high focus into

secondary schools offering various levels of coaching support towards the teams and players from junior secondary levels through to senior 1st XI squads. Secondary level is an important area for support to retain players to feed not only into high performance teams but also into our club system at all competitive and social levels.

KIWI CRICKET moved to a Friday evening with games based at ‘club centres’ in Term 1 as a new initiative. The move was a very successful one with a great atmosphere created at the centres with 8 teams playing at once, and it helped ease the pressure on grounds allocation Saturday mornings. TCA coaching staff attended each centre to roam around and assist the teams and coaches with warm-ups, information and game set ups. The final round was played at Pukekura Park with 16 teams playing on the ground in a fantastic advertisement for junior cricket.

Many school and club teams took up the opportunity for TCA coaching staff to attend practice sessions to up skill and assist coaches with running skills and drills as part of TCAs continued support into junior team coaches. This is an area that is crucial to keep volunteers and coaches in the game by providing a good experience and

support it will move a good way to doing this, as well as providing the connection between TCA and our Clubs and Schools.

COACH DEvELOPMENT

Development level coaching courses were well attended once again with 71 coaches trained at the start of the 2016-17 season. With the game continuing to grow especially at primary levels in Taranaki, it is important that coaches are continually recruited and upskilled at all levels, in order to keep the game strong.

NATIONAL SCHOOL COMPETITIONS

National knockout competitions are very popular for school teams across the country, and Taranaki schools have performed at a high level after progressing as winners of the Taranaki region in their respective competitions.

Highlights this season were the New Plymouth Boys High School year 9/10 team with the assistance of TCA coach Kyle Pillay winning the National Junior Competition going unbeaten at the finals week against the top 6 junior teams in the country in Palmerston North. A fantastic achievement for the school and province with all the boys mebers of TCAs U14 and U15 rep teams.

New Plymouth Girls High School won their way through the Taranaki section of the NZCT National Girls competition and won their semi final against Havelock North HS in the Central Districts playoffs. They will play the CD Final against Palmerston North Girls High in Term 4 where a win would give them a place in the Secondary Girls National Finals.

The Hawera High School 1st XI boys team who were crowned champions at the Central Districts Secondary Schools finals last season have again reached the Ross Taylor Trophy finals day which will be played in Term 4 2017 in Palmerston North.

WOMENS/GIRLS CRICKET PROGRAMMES

Taranaki Cricket received Kiwisport Funding and a one off grant from New Zealand Cricket to promote and improve womens and girls cricket in Taranaki this season.

A number of excellent initiatives providing skill development programmes into a number of the schools capturing a wide range of girls with a cricket based theme as part of their PE programme helped the continued uptake in interest crucial to building a bigger base of numbers at the junior level which will hopefully benefit the Women’s game long term, especially at the senior secondary and school leavers levels.

This was followed by the opportunity for girls to be part of a girls only cricket programme on Monday nights which was run with the support of coaching from many of the Senior

Secondary Girls and Womens squad players, providing good role models for the younger players taking part in the programme.

Three junior girls representative teams were run for the 1st time here in Taranaki with under 13, under 15 and under 18 teams attending tournaments, and this will provide some good depth for the Taranaki Womens rep team longer term.

AGE GROUP REPRESENTATIvE PROGRAMME

Taranaki Cricket Associations age group teams had another successful season of representative cricket performing with distinction in tournaments at the respective levels.

The highlight was the Taranaki Under 17 team winning the Central Districts Under 17 tournament for the 1st time in 6 years completing the tournament unbeaten by winning a close final against Hawkes Bay.

The Under 15 boys team were also unbeaten however were unlucky

to miss out on the final of their tournament due to a couple of rain outs requiring a count back on run rate to separate the teams.

TCA also ran boys Under 12 teams at both North and South Taranaki, Under 13 and Under 14 levels as well as an Under 11 Development team. All teams were allocated two coaches for each practice session with a head coach attending games and tournaments. This area is one of very high investment for TCA, and we are lucky to have a very good skill set of coaches who are passionate about their teams working with the players.

DON STEWART BATTING ACADEMy

This was the 2nd year of this programme and 9 players from the U11-U14 age group were invited then selected into the programme.

Each player attended 4 group skills or classrooms sessions and 3 one to one coaching sessions with appointed TCA coaches, with the focus on creating a high level of competence in young batters in terms of skill, game understanding, better training methods and mental skills associated with the different facets of batting.

WINTER TRAINING PROGRAMMES AND HOLIDAy CLINICS

Throughout the winter of 2016 Taranaki Cricket continued with a 10 week winter programme for junior cricketers focussing on skill development to improve their game leading into the 2016-17 season. The players were split into 6 groups with the sessions running weekly over school terms 2 and 3 with the coaching carried out by TCAs most experienced coaches Jamie Watkins and Debu Banik. The programme was well received and good numbers have signed up for the 2017 winter programme which is currently running.

Pre season and Summer Holiday Coaching clinics were also very well attended this season with 130 boys and girls taking part.

The Term 3 holiday programme was run at the Sulzberger Indoor centre and New Plymouth Boys High School Gym leading into the season with groups split into 6-10 years and 11-15 year ages with a focus on skill drills and development along with some fun games. 75 children attended.

The summer holiday clinic was run in late December at Western Park with 55 children from the ages of 6 to 14 years attending the 2 day clinic which ran from 10am-3pm each day. This clinic covered a wide range of skills and activities with children gaining the benefit of TCA coaches in attendance to work on individual skills, game scenarios as well as classroom sessions to focus game tactics and understanding. A bonus was the attendance of a number of Central Stags players including Taranaki's Tom Bruce and Will Young on day 2 of the clinic, where the players got involved in the skills and games, before signing autographs and taking photos with all of the children.

Summary

2016-17 has been a successful season in Taranaki (Despite the poor weather!) with the Development and Coaching programmes continuing to raise the level of cricket in the province with strong structures at club and representative levels, as well as assisting with the recruitment and development of coaches and volunteers crucial to the success and future of the game in the province.

Taranaki Cricket grateful for the continued support from Central District Development Manager Nigel Brooke, assisting with the running of courses and implementation of our programmes. The resources available to help run coach education, and assist people on the ground at clubs and schools with running the game are helpful and an important tool for the continued health of the game.

I would like to thank the TCA Board, and the dedicated TCA administration and coaching staff for their support and passion in growing and improving the game at all levels in Taranaki.

I look forward to the challenge of continuing to grow and develop the game of cricket across all levels in our great province.
