Cricket in the province this year has seen an increase in the number of players participating in primary competitions and more teams in the secondary school competition.

Taranaki this past year provided five captains of CD teams. This in itself is an outstanding achievement. The Stags and Hinds, CD A men’s’ team were led by Taranaki players as well as two of the CD age group teams.

At the Taranaki Sportsperson of the Year Awards Don Stewart received a special award for his involvement with junior cricket in Taranaki.

Umpires

TCA continues to be well served by the Umpires and Scores Association. Our relationship with the umpires is very positive and I thank all umpires for the service they provide to TCA.

Thelma Luxton has been the scorer for 1st class games at Pukekura Park for 46 years. Thelma has decided to retire from scoring 1st class games but will continue being the scorer for Taranaki games. A suitable framed photo of Pukekura Park and the scoreboard was presented to Thelma from CD and TCA to mark her retirement. Thanks for everything Thelma.

05TARANAKI CRICKET ASSOCIATION ● 2015 ANNUAL REPORT

FOR THE YEAR ENDING 30 APRIL 2016

1st Class Cricket

TCA hosted a record number of games this season. A Women’s White Ferns verses Australia international T20 game was a highlight. A new format for the men’s domestic T20 competition resulted in Yarrow Stadium with a drop in pitch being used to host three preliminary games and the semi-finals and finals. Pukekura Park hosted two T20 games, two one day games and the NZC one day Ford Trophy final which CD won. In total 8 T20 games, three one day games and one Women’s International. This takes a lot of organisation and thanks to everyone who contributed.

Competitions

Competitions were keenly contested and the desire to play in a final on Pukekura Park is something that players aspire to.

I must mention Patea CC which has been in recess for many years and this year there was enough interest within the town to enter a team in the South competition. The team did very well and went on to win the South and then the Taranaki 2nd grade championship. Well done to the Patea team.

In response to the 2014/15 premier/senior season debrief, and in good faith, TCA permitted a relaxing of the rules this season in an attempt to provide clubs with more flexibility in player selection for finals cricket. Clubs expressed high ethics in the manner in which they would manage players this season particularly around finals player selection. TCA did not experience this sentiment from all clubs this season forcing TCA to interpret the “intent” of the rules when challenged. TCA will revert to the more prescriptive regrading and eligibility rules that offers more clarity for all concerned this next season.

Premier pitch renovations has been an on-going problem in recent years. TCA took ownership of the problem

and worked closely with NPDC and a contractor from Wellington was used this year. One of the outcomes TCA wants to see is that premier cricket is played on grass earlier than in the past years. Weather permitting there should be no reason for this not to be achieved.

FINANCIAL

TCA continues to have a strong balance sheet and it is pleasing to report a profit before depreciation of $44,000. Allowing for depreciation of $18,000 the end result is a $26,000 profit. Gaming Trust and other funders are critical to the financial viability of TCA to enable the association to have a comprehensive development programme.

HAWKE CUP

The Revital Fertilisers Taranaki team had a mixed year. It was always going to be a challenge this year to repeat the success of the previous year after the retirement of senior players. Ryan Watson performed with distinction taking a total of 31 wickets at an average of 11. His best bowling came against Wanganui with the outstanding figures of 7 for 17 off 11.5 overs.

TCA put extra resources into the team this year and the success of the team I feel fell short of what was expected.

Thanks to Debu Banik as coach and the selectors for the time and effort they dedicate to the team.

HIGHER HONOURS

Kate Broadmore captained the CD Hinds which also included Kate Baxter and Melanie Megaw

Melanie Megaw, Monique Rees and Emily Cunningham played for CD Under 21 Women. CD won the National tournament and Melanie was named in the tournament team.

William Young captained CD, was selected in the NZ A team and along with Tom Bruce and Dean Robinson were contracted to the CD Stags. Ryan Watson was part of the squad for the last two games of the season but did not get an opportunity to play.

Mattie Thomas (Captain), Jordie Barrett, and James McDougall played for CD A. Jordie Barrett (captain), Kaylum Boshier, Taylor Williams and Liam Muggeridge playing for the CD Under 19 team. It is pleasing to see so many of our men and women being selected in CD teams.

Kaylum Boshier was selected in the Governor Generals X1.

A number of our age group players were also selected in CD teams. I congratulate all players who obtained higher honours; it is something that they can be proud of.

COACHING AND DEVELOPMENT

TCA continues to invest a substantial amount of our income and resources into cricket coaching and player development. The level of investment is by no means small in relation to our income and TCA is proud of the commitment we give to schools, clubs and our young people. Over the season there has been a focus on developing girl’s cricket which has seen positive results. Part of this development is to get other Districts within CD to agree on a more expansive women’s representative programme. The up-skilling of primary coaches that have very little cricketing knowledge and experience was a new initiative that was trialed at the end of the season. The results and feedback has been very positive and hopefully finances will allow for this type of coaching to be continued this coming year.

The boy’s representative U17 team were joint winners of the CD tournament and the U15 boys finished

Jamie receiving a presentation from TCA Chairman – Neil Sulzberger.

second at their tournament.

Thanks are extended to Jamie Watkins and his team of coaches for the quality coaching they provide. We are extremely fortunate to have highly skilled coaches prepared to share their knowledge and expertise with fellow cricketers.

SPONSORS

Sponsors are vital to the health and success of Taranaki Cricket and I would like to thank all sponsors for their support. New Zealand Cricket plays an active role in making resources and funding available to promote cricket in Taranaki.

Thanks to Revital Fertilisers, New Zealand Community Trust, Taranaki Electricity Trust (TET), Grassroots Trust and CD Cricket for their support which has allowed TCA to function at a high level and provide coaching programs which again went to all parts of Taranaki. There are three District Councils within our catchment and the support they give in providing grounds is appreciated and acknowledged. Without the funding support of sponsors and business partners, TCA would struggle to keep Taranaki Cricket where it is today as one of the leading district cricket associations in New Zealand.

WEBSITE

TCA has been investigating options for an up-grade of our website. The functionality of the present site leaves a lot to be desired. A new website will be hosted by CricHQ and should be up and running by the start of this next season.

THE BOARD

Brent Sharp has decided to retire from the Board after 10 years as Competitions Director. Brent has had a long involvement with cricket in Taranaki firstly as a manager of age

group teams and for five years as a member of the North Taranaki Junior Cricket Committee. Brent retired from the junior committee when he was elected as a director of TCA in 2006. Brent is a former umpire and was a Taranaki delegate to the CD CUSA.

I thank Brent for his contribution to Taranaki Cricket over many years. Your friendship is special and I wish you well as you step away from Taranaki cricket.

Thanks to Travis Stewart, our administrator for managing the day to day business of TCA. I extend my personal thanks to all committees, umpires, volunteers and everyone who has contributed to the success of this past season. It has been a busy year and TCA could not function so effectively without your support. Cricketers in Taranaki are fortunate to have people that give up their time unselfishly for the benefit and the future of the game.

I extend my thanks to my fellow Board directors. It has been a pleasure working with you. I cannot speak highly enough of my directors who are dedicated and committed to the betterment of Taranaki Cricket.

MY RETIREMENT

This will be my last Annual report as I retire from the TCA Board. My first experience at a management level of TCA was in the late 1960’s and 1970’s when Taranaki cricket had four divisions and I was a club delegate to Western division and a Western Division delegate to TCA. I will say that TCA meetings in those days were “interesting” in that each division was looking after their self-interest and not necessarily the good of Taranaki cricket.

I was elected to the Board of TCA in 1996 when TCA was restructured, and while I had a brief period off the Board for 18 months mid-term, it has been a

privilege working with some fantastic directors and people.

I have enjoyed working with the cricket family and being able to serve the Taranaki cricket community. With 20 clubs this at times has its challenges, however, clubs need to be mindful that directors make decisions in the best interest for cricket in Taranaki, not necessarily what is good for a particular club.

There have been a number of people over the years that have provided help to me so I can serve Taranaki cricket. I must mention my wife Jill, who at times has been a “cricket widow”. Her support to me has been tremendous and without this I would not have been able to play my part as a director for as long as I have. I thank Jill for her support.

I wish Taranaki Cricket Association well for the future.

The balance sheet shows that TCA recorded a profit before depreciation of $44,700. Allowing for depreciation of $18,000 the profit was $26,000.

Whilst TCA has a number of funders the association is very reliant on gaming trust funders to provide funds for a number of areas of our operation. Without these funds TCA would be in a very vulnerable situation.

Income from grants and donations were down while coaching and tournament income was up.

On the expense side of the ledger there was a small increase in age group cricket. Motor vehicle expenses has doubled but this is a result of how TCA previously coded representative van hire expense. Senior representative expenses increased due to Board approval of more representative games.

CHAPPLE CUP

Game one against Horowhenua Kapiti went to plan with Taranaki amassing 292 led by William Young (87) and Tom Bruce (65). The bowlers then dismissed Horowhenua Kapiti for 121. Jason Dombroski the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets.

With a win on day one Taranaki booked a semi final spot against Manawatu, this time it was Manawatu that amassed a competitive score of 292, unfortunately Taranaki never got into the run chase being bowled out for 156, again William Young top scoring with 43.

A play off for 3rd and 4th took place on the final day; the match against Hawkes Bay was reduced to 40 overs due to overnight rain. Taranaki lost the toss and were asked to bat, they were soon in trouble and only James McDougall (39) put up any resistance and Taranaki were dismissed for 123. Hawkes Bay struggled against the Taranaki seam attack but eventually got past the total 6 down.

Furlong Cup Zone 2 Elimination Series

Revital Fertilisers Taranaki got their campaign off to a good start with an outright victory against Wanganui, the match was highlighted by two superb performances, Liam Muggeridge making his first century for Taranaki 103 not out and a 2nd innings spell from Ryan Watson that returned the figures of 7 for 17 and 10 for 43 for the match.

To gain a challenge Taranaki must look to get 1st innings points against Manawatu and Hawkes Bay who are traditionally the stronger teams.

Unfortunately the side struggled against these teams this season and were beaten on 1st innings by Manawatu and outright by Hawkes Bay.

Taranaki bounced back and beat Horowhenua Kapiti and Wairarapa outright resulting in a 3rd place finish and missing the chance to challenge for the Hawke Cup.

COMPETITIONS DIRECTOR’S REPORTBRENT SHARP

2015-2016 SEASON

REVITAL FERTILISERS PREMIER COMPETITION

ONE DAY COMPETITION

The Revital Fertilisers Premier competition consisted of the usual eight teams that played one full limited overs round with semi-finals and finals in the first half of the season.

The one day final was played after the New Year break due to the amount of first class cricket played in Taranaki prior to Christmas. The final itself was contested by Woodleigh and NPMU with NPMU victorous by 46 runs thanks mainly to a 186 run partnership between Dean Robinson (127) and Jarred Cunningham (108*).

TWENTY20 KNOCKOUT COMPETITION

This midweek Twenty20 cricket continues to be popular with the Premier teams. Two pools of four teams that were seeded from last season’s results, played a round robin competition over three weeks, followed by crossover (1 v 2) semi-finals and a final played at Pukekura Park. This final was between NPMU and NPOB played on the 21st February 2016 at Pukekura Park. NPOB won the final by 7 wickets.

TWO DAY COMPETITION

The two day competition also consisting of a full round and semi-finals, culminated in a three day final between NPOB and Woodleigh at

Pukekura Park starting on the 25th March, 2016. In what was one of the most exciting finals played since the inception of the three day final format; NPOB completed the win outright by 134 runs after leading the 1st innings by only 15 runs.

TET SENIOR COMPETITION

The Taranaki wide Senior grade one day competition consisted of 6 teams. The competition consisted of 3 full round robins culminating with semi finals 1 v 4 and 2 v 3 and a final played at Pukekura Park on 19th March 2016.

In what ended up an all South Taranaki final Auroa defeated Pihama by 57 runs completing a dominant season which saw them lose only one game.

NORTH TARANAKI LOWER GRADES

The Mill Twenty20 North Grade competition continues to grown in popularity with 11 teams participating, this grew from 8 the previous season. With the increase in number of teams and the shortened timeframe of this competition it meant that a full round robin was played with semi finals (1 v 4) and (2 v 3) with the final played as the curtain raiser to the Premier final. The final was contested between NPOB and Waitara with NPOB running out convincing winners.

This season the DB Breweries North 2nd grade only had 6 teams participate, 3 full rounds were played with semi finals and final with Merrilands Mandrills defeating NPOB.

2015-2016 SEASON

The Budget Rent A Car 3rd Grades had 10 teams and played a home and away round robin. Oakua defeated NPMU in the 3rd grade final.

SOUTH TARANAKI LOWER GRADES

This season the South Taranaki Lower Grade competition consisted of seven teams with Patea entering a team for the first time in many years. One round of Twenty20 cricket was played prior to Christmas which saw Patea defeat Stratford White in the final. This was followed by a full round of 40 over cricket after Christmas. Semi Finals were played with 1 v 2 and 3 v 4, the winner of 1 v 2 would represent the South in the Taranaki wide 2nd Grade final with the loser of that game playing the winner of the other semi final to play off for the 3rd grade title. This format allowed for the two best teams in South to go forward for the Taranaki titles.

Patea defeated Turuturu for the 2nd grade title with Stratford White then defeating Turuturu the next week for the 3rd grade title.

TARANAKI LOWER GRADE FINALS

The Taranaki 2nd Grade Limited Overs Finals were played at Pukekura Park on March 12 with the 3rd Grade played at Pukekura Park on March 20.

The results were as follows:

DB Breweries 2nd Grade: Patea defeated Merrilands Mandrills by 5 wickets.

Budget Rent A Car 3rd Grade: Stratford White defeated Oakura by 93 runs.

TARANAKI UMPIRES

Taranaki still enjoys a very good numbers of quality Umpires. Neutral umpiring is a key component to player enjoyment of cricket and therefore a big influence on their longevity in the

game. TCA are comitted to supporting the TCUSA whenever it can.

COMPETITIONS COMMITTEE

Many thanks to Greg Alexander, and John McElroy for their on-going commitment to the Competitions Committee.

KIWI FUNDING COMPETITION YEAR 7-11

A competition was held once a week at FDMC for any girls from years 7-11 interested in giving cricket a try. The competition was well received with a total of between 35 and 45 girls turning up each week.

The games were run like Kiwi cricket with each pair batting for at least three overs, and runs being deducted if there was a wicket, each bowler getting at least two overs each.

The funding which was received was used for equipment, venue hire and coaching which was done by TCA who went into schools and coached the girls. I was lucky enough to have the help of six under 18 girls who volunteered their time and helped out with coaching and umpiring.

MELBOURNE TRIP 2016

Although this team was not affiliated to TCA, the team was made up of girls who have represents Taranaki teams this season, it was a fantastic trip and great for the girls to see what the standard is like in Australia, we were lucky enough to train with the Melbourne Senior Women’ s team.

Also watching games such as Australia vs India and got to watch the T20 finals which consisted of NZ women cricketers playing in that competition.

INTRODUCTION

As can be seen from the results below our age group rep teams were very successful at their respective tournaments this year. It was pleasing that we were able to offer an extra round of games for teams this year against Waikato Valley opponents. Our managers, coaches and players all contributed to the smooth running of our teams. Most pleasing of all was that our teams were well turned out, well behaved and represented Taranaki with pride.

For secondary school cricket there was a big increase in numbers in Term 1 this year. It’s hard to know how much influence the recent success of the black caps has on such numbers. I suspect their success generates a lot of interest in school cricket. However, without the tireless work and dedication of teachers, school sports coordinators, parents and coaches many of our cricketers would not have the opportunity to play cricket. In term 1 both NPBHS and FDMC accommodated an extra four teams each. The ability to field those extra numbers was due in no small part to their respective directors of cricket; Ben West and Males Wales who both do a great job. I also want to mention sports coordinator Sharon Quinnell and parent/coach Paul Norgate who were responsible for the return of Opunake High School to our competition.

2015/16 AGE GROUP PROGRAM

This year TCA ran the following age group teams:

South U12’s: - Manager; Ricky Tito, Coach; Barry Scott.

North U12’s: - Manager; Jason Elder, Coach; Kurt Leuthart.

U13’s: - Manager; Mitch Graham, Coach; Mattie Thomas.

U15’s: - Manager; Hamish Logan, Coach; Ramesh Subasinghe.

U17’s: - Joint Managers/Coaches; Travis Stewart and Dean Stewart.

In general these teams had squads of 15 to 16 players and were run by volunteer managers with the coaching funded through TCA.

There were also Under 15 and Under 18 Girls teams which are reported on by Gill Hurley (Woman’s Director).

We also organised an U11 team who played home and away games against Wanganui U11.

Results were as follows:

South U12’s – 0 wins, 8 losses (also 3 inter-Taranaki games for 1 win and 2 losses)

North U12’s – 7 wins, 3 losses (also 5 inter-Taranaki games for 4 wins and 1 loss)

U13’s – 7 wins, 5 losses, (also 3 inter-Taranaki games for 2 wins and 1 loss)

2015-2016 SEASON

U15’s – 5 wins, 1 Draw, 2 losses (also 2 inter-Taranaki games for 2 wins)

U17’s – 4 wins, 1 loss, 1 game abandoned.

The North U12s won their tournament. The U17s were joint winners of their tournament when their final was abandoned with them in a good position. The U13s and U15s were both runners up in their tournaments. In addition Taranaki players Matt Allen, Jack Parker and Shaun Fowler were named in the U15 tournament team and Taranaki Players Kaylum Boshier (captain) Josh Borrell and Terrell Erwood played for Central Districts U17 in the National Tournament. All in all a fantastic year results wise!

I thank the coaches for all of these teams and note that the feedback about them that I received was consistently positive. The volunteer managers deserve a great vote of thanks also. It is a time consuming and demanding job which was performed consistently well by all managers this season.

SECONDARY SCHOOL CRICKET

For Secondary School Cricket we had 15 teams for Term 4, 2015 and a big increase to 25 teams for Term 1, 2016. The respective figures for the previous season were 16 and 16. Hopefully this increase will continue into the new season. We had teams from 9 of the 12 secondary schools in Taranaki namely; Hawera, Inglewood, NPBHS, NPGHS, FDMC, Sacred Heart, Spotswood, Waitara and Opunake. It was particularly pleasing to have Opunake on board for the 1st time in recent years especially with their year 9 and 10 team winning Div 3.

In addition a total of 5 teams from Boys High and Francis Douglas play in adult competitions.

The competition winners were:

AS PriMAry School direcTor i brinG you My rePorT.

Congratulations to the following teams in winning their respective grades.

NORTH TARANAKI:

Player numbers are continuing to grow across the Primary School Competition. Most significant, is the retention of players in the Higher Primary and Intermediate Grades, meaning the spread of players across the competition is becoming more uniform. The North Taranaki Junior Cricket Committee (NTJCC) has been conscious that player numbers have not been consistent post Kiwi Grades and, as previously reported, has made several changes to the competition to address the need of player retention

for the greater good of Cricket in Taranaki. We endeavour to work hard so that this trend continues.

Prior to the commencement of the Term Four Competition, NTJCC offered city clubs the opportunity to administer teams in the Primary School Competition. The logic behind this decision was to offer players the opportunity to play in a grade suitable to their age and ability rather than being bounded to a team where numbers dictated what grade a player would play in. Woodleigh Cricket Club and New Plymouth Old Boys Club took

up the offer; they join Inglewood and Waitara Clubs as an administrator.

NTJCC also decided to trial operating the Primary School Grades, excluding Kiwi Grades, as one competition to run over Term One and Term Four instead of two competitions run over two terms. This controversial decision is currently in the middle of this trial period so I cannot report on the success or failure of it thus far.

SOUTH TARANAKI:

Team numbers in the South Taranaki Competition have remained consistent and congratulations to the following winners:

South Taranaki have a Vern Betts competition and while the number of teams fluctuate each year the competition is well organised. Kerry Fowler has retired as the South convenor after giving many years of loyal service. Thank you for your involvement Kerry. Heath Chittenden from Auroa School has moved outside of Taranaki and I take this opportunity to thank Heath for all his work for the betterment of primary school cricket. Jared Chittenden has taken over the convenor role for South Taranaki Primary Cricket.

I once again take this opportunity to thank the South and North Primary Cricket Committee Members, personnel involved in the administration, sponsors, coaches, managers, transporters, and mentors of our young cricket players across Taranaki.
