FCUMC MISSION STATEMENT
“SEEKING TO BE THE HEART AND HANDS OF CHRIST SHARING THE LOVE OF CHRIST WITH OUR COMMUNITY AND BEYOND.”
Dear Friends,
Well, summer is officially here at
Fletcher's Chapel UMC! The sun
is blazing, the A.C. is cranked,
and the children are out of
school. And for many of us,
summer means vacation time.
Whether it's going on a trip with
family or friends, or taking a little "staycation" at home,
summer offers opportunities for many of us to rest, re-
lax, and recharge. While things often slow down at
church during the summer months, the summer is an ex-
cellent time for us to be growing in our faith!
We're busy Christians here at Fletcher's Chapel! Many of
us like to live out our faith by "doing things": serving the
poor, feeding the hungry, being with the sick, raising
money for those in need, etc. And all of these things are
so important! I'm so glad to be a part of a church that
does many great things through the grace of God! But it's
also important that we take time to be still and know
God. In the busy-ness of our lives, it's easy to forget to
spend quality time with the Lord. Scripture says that
while God might pour us out for the sake of others
(Phil 2:17), God also wants to pour the power of the Holy
Spirit into us (Titus 3:6). Just like you need to fill up the
watering can before you can water your plants, God
needs to pour into us before we can be poured out for
others.
This summer, I invite you to slow down a little and re-
ceive the energizing, rejuvenating Spirit of the Lord.
Whether it's taking five minutes in silence in your car on
your way to work, or spending a little while outside in
God's creation, take some time this summer to be
still, be silent, and know God. Let God fill you with
the Holy Spirit. Let us all pray that this summer is a
time of spiritual revival for our church and the Church
everywhere!
In God’s Love,
Sarah Blanchard

Congressional Prayer For the Fourth of July
I recently discovered this web site which has several Congressional
prayers specifically for the 4th of July. This one caught my attention
for two reasons...The country was divided and the Civil War had just
started the prior April. It was also the only time Congress has ever
convened on July 4th.
The following prayer was offered by Rev. Byron Sunderland, D.D.
Almighty and everlasting God, be not angry with us for our sins, which we only confess and deplore; but pardon
our offenses and extend to us Thy favor. We thank Thee for Thy goodness on this anniversary of the nation a day
tenfold more precious by reason of our present troubles, and sacred to the heart for the ever memorable Declara-
tion of our fathers, in which Thou didst begin more openly to give us a name among the nations of the earth. We
thank Thee for all Thy manifold and abundant mercies hitherto to make our nation exceedingly great and glori-
ous; but now disasters have befallen us and darkness broods in the land. And now we ask Thy mercy as the Senate
is convening at a most momentous crisis of our history. Give to Thy servants all needed help. Add to their delibera-
tions wisdom and unanimity, and profit and speed to their conclusion. Bless Thy servant, the President of the
United States, our veteran Commander-in- Chief, and all that have functions in the civil and military power. May
the angel of Thy presence walk in the Cabinet and in the Congress and in the camp, to go before, to purify, and to
direct the now greatly and universally-awakened love of country. And we beseech Thee to guide us, to overrule
and order all things, and so to cause that nothing shall fail, that the disorders of the land may be speedily healed,
that peace and concord may prevail, that truth and righteousness may be established, and that Thy Church and
Kingdom may flourish in a larger peace and prosperity, for Thy Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.
