An IntroductionThe GSSP lies in central Kelantan and

covers an area of 21,950ha and is surrounded by the Basor Forest Reserve, Gunung Stong Utara Forest Reserve, Gunung Stong Selatan Forest Reserve, Balah Forest Reserve and Berangkat Forest Reserve; totally 157,087ha of forest.

GSSP is popular with visitor , who have been hiking to the mountain since the early 90s, and is on the map of Malaysian and Singaporean outdoor recreation enthusiasts.

continue…Prior to 1985, GSSP were not known for

recreation, as the emphasis was on logging, and the clearing up of forestlands for agriculture schemes under KESEDAR. It was only sometime in the 1980s that a retired Special Forces officer, a Major Yusoff, conducted outdoor recreation training programs in the area. His charges introduced their friends and by late 1980s, GSSP was already on the map of local hikers.

Baha a local guide, started taking foreign hikers and backpackers in the early 1990s, and by 1992, decided to construct several basic huts with dining area. Baha died in 2002 and this basecamp known as Baha Camp.

2007, GSSP gazetted as state park.

GETTING THERE Road: From Kuala Lumpur, take the North-

South Expressway heading north and exit at Kuala Kangsar. From the exit, head towards Gerik and then proceed along Eaast-West highway towards Jeli. At Jeli town, follow Route 66 leading to Dabong.Alternately, take the East Coast Expressway from KL towards Bentong. From there, follow Route 8 to Gua Musang, and then get on Route D29 to Dabong.

Rail: From KL Sentral Station, the north-bounThis area is accessible by four wheel drive. The “Tar” road from town turns into a muddy logging track, which is made worse by the procession of trucks taking out logs from the forest.express train to Kota Bharu will take you through several small settlements including Dabong. From there, you’ll need local transport to Jelawang.

Places of Interest The Jelawang Waterfall, an impressive

seven-tier waterfall is o one of the highest waterfall in Malaysia.

Bogo Rock Shelter, a cave-like formation, is a suitable resting point on the way to the summit of Gunung Stong, which can be reached within four hours of trekking.

Gunung Ayam, the highest peak in the area, standing at 1,504m is the ideal spot to watch both sunset and sunrise, a campsite is available for overnight stays.

Visit the breathtaking 225 million year-old limestone caves at Dabong that house several bat species and rare flora, including an endemic balsam.

Hiperendermic species Holttumochloa publescens and Licuala stongensis, (found only here ).

GSSP also harbours a diverse range of wild ginger species including wildlife habitat like elephants, tigers, tapirs, Gabons & hornbills.
