The Daytona Project: A Ferrari in need of a restoration

Here at GTM we love to get that call from the customer who wants us to do a full Concours restoration.

I know what you are thinking..

She does not look like she needs a full restoration!

However Concours requires perfection, and if this is what you are looking for you have come to the right place, because this is something that the GTM team takes pride in, and excels at.

First things first, we need to disassemble the car, piece by piece, so that it can be sent to the body shop.

From here the car is placed on a rotisserie. This makes it easier to strip the paint from the chassis, check for defects, assess any damage, and to make the necessary repairs.

Now she is ready to be prepped and re-painted.

This is a 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB4, but most of us know her simply as the Ferrari Daytona.

1,284 of this model were produced between; 1968 & 1973. With a 4.4L V12 engine, she has an estimated top speed of 174 mph, and reportedly makes it from 0-60 mph in just 5.4 seconds, not bad for the late 60’s, early 70’s. Slight modifications were made for the US market, but this particular model was originally sold in Italy.

The designer; Leanardo Fioravanti, claimed during a television show interview that he designed her in just 7 days.

Interesting facts!Concours is actually short for; Concours d’Elegance, which is French.

It represents a gathering of prestigious cars and dates back to the 17th Century, when French aristocracy would parade horse-drawn carriages in the parks of Paris.

Did you know that at a Concours event you can actually loose points for ‘over’ restoration, yes, that is right!!

While Concours is all about perfection, it must be in keeping with the original car, and in

accordance to the original build sheet.

If the judges feel that a part, which should have been manufactured in the 1970’s, has the markings of more modern technology, then they will deduct points.

There is no such thing as artistic license if you are looking for maximum points at a Concours event.

At GTM we have 65+ combined years in automotive restoration, and the servicing and repair of classic, exotic, sports, and race cars. The original GTM was founded in 1977 in Brussels, Belgium. At that time we specialized in exotic car service, and were an official De Tomaso service center. From 1989 -1998 we were also an

official Ferrari dealership and service center. In 1998 we went back to our roots to focus purely on servicing, repair, and restoration, until 2004. In 2008 the new GTM & Son was born in the USA. We initially concentrated on European high-performance, vintage vehicles, however at the request of our customers we soon branched

into the V8 Shelby, and Cobra models. Vehicles restored by GTM have won numerous awards at Concours.
