New Member Lunch

On the first Monday of each month, new members are invited to join other new members for lunch (dutch treat) at noon at City Range Grill, 615 Haywood Road (across from Haywood Mall). This is a great opportunity to get to know each other in an informal setting with time for conversation and networking. These meetings count as a makeup for a regular meeting up to 2 weeks before or after.

Our club needs to expand our membership. Please check your Rolodex or Blackberry for two people you can bring to our next Discover Rotary meeting! Invite your friends and colleagues who may be interested in joining our Rotary club, for an informative meeting to discover what Rotary is all about, and how they can participate. If you cannot attend with your guest, let Mandy know and she will arrange for someone to host your guest. If you have someone who is interested in attending please contact Mandy Dutton [email protected]

STRANGE STUFF

C a t c h t h e V i s i o n M a k e i t H a p p e n

If you don’t think other folks pay attention to what we do in our Club, let me call your attention to the letter we received from Kelvin Washington, the U. S. Marshal for South Carolina. He was one of those in attendance at our Law Enforcement Appreciation Day at the first meeting in February, so he’s reporting his personal experience. This is the kind of impact we have in our community and beyond as we go about practicing “Service Above Self” both in our Club activities and in our everyday lives. Keep up the good work! Speaking of last month’s meetings, those of you who were not present for the meeting on the 28th really missed a treat. Jeremiah Dew was outstanding in his presentation of our Black History Month program, particularly in his performance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. It was one of the most moving programs I have been a part of – and not just in Rotary. Last weekend a number of us were at Hilton Head for the annual District Conference. In spite of rainy weather on Saturday, we enjoyed a real “family of Rotary” experience, heard some great motivational speakers, and came away with renewed enthusiasm for the work of Rotary. Our display in the House of Friendship won the “blue ribbon” as we celebrated the 20th edition of Roper Mountain Holiday Lights for all those in the District to see. Many of members were “decisively engaged” in the planning and execution of the conference, and everyone gets an “Atta Boy” for a job well done. Our meeting next Tuesday is our annual Vocational Service Day when we host high school students from the Greenville County Schools who will be shadowing our members at their places of business during the morning. This is always a fun event, and I for one am always encouraged about the future of our community when I talk with these young people. Even if you weren’t able to have one of these students with you all morning, be sure to join them for lunch, and encourage them as they prepare to meet the challenges of the “real world” that lies ahead. And, we will recognize an individual in our community who has exhibited real leadership and high ethical standards in his or her profession with our third annual Career Day Service Award. Looking ahead to the 27th, you will definitely want to be present as this year’s Group Study Exchange teams – both inbound and outbound – will be our guests, and the Brazilian team will present our program. Our club has a long history of supporting the GSE program in District 7750, having produced several Rotarian team leaders and sponsored many team members. This year our own Charles Warne leads the outbound team, and we sponsored two of the five team members. I got to know the team from Brazil during the District Conference, and I can assure you they are a pleasure to be around. Don’t miss it. As we begin the final trimester of our Rotary year, please be mindful of your role in meeting our goals for membership and giving to The Rotary Foundation. Each of us should be able to attract at least one new member into our club before the end of the year. Each of us ought to be able to contribute something to our Foundation, even if circumstance prevent you from being a Sustaining Member or higher. You can, by the way, check the status of your Foundation giving through the Rotary International website (www.rotary.org). Join me in supporting our Club and Rotary around the world! See you on Tuesday for the next meeting of the best and best-looking Club in the Rotary world. Yours in Rotary Service,

Register now to learn more about Rotary at the March 23 Rotary Leadership Institute. This RLI will be held in Duncan (between Greenville and Spartanburg). The fee is $95 and clubs usually pay this on behalf of the Rotarian. Not everyone will learn everything of the Rotary's programs, but those who do attend will gain a greater appreciation for the different avenues of service and programs available of RLI. You may attend the RLI at your own expense or you may attend at your club's expense. Invest in the future of your club and register at one of the upcoming RLI sessions. Rotarians can attend any of the RLI events including those of other districts. A calendar of events and more specific locations can be obtained on the RLI website at: http://www.rli33. org/events/events.html RLI courses are fun topical, interactive, and geared toward busy business people who want to be more effective leaders in their vocation and club and more knowledgeable Rotarians. Rotary clubs are encouraged to select at least two candidates for RLI annually. Register online at rli33.org. RLI is one good membership retention tool because the more our members know about our organization, the more likely they are to remain involved. For more membership retention ideas, contact district membership chair Myles Golden

Rotary Leadership Institute — Jack Maciag, District 7750 RLI Chair, Rotary Club of Fair Play

The Rotary Club of Greenville was organized on January 7, 1916, when a group of civic and business leaders gathered at the Ottaray Hotel on North Main Street. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Atlanta, the Greenville Club was officially chartered on March 1, 1916, as Club Number 205. The Centennial Planning Committee, chaired by George Fletcher, is already at work developing plans for our celebration of this important milestone. The committee would like to enlist the input from all members of the Club as to what events, projects, etc. you would like to see as a part of our celebration of the first century of Rotary in Greenville and in anticipation of our second century of “Service Above Self” in this community. So, ladies and gentlemen, put on your thinking caps. In the next few weeks we will send out a formal survey request. Please take time to develop any thoughts or suggestions that you would like to put “in the hopper” for the committee’s consideration.

NOW PLANNING: CLUB CENTENNIAL – 2016
