    June 18th, 2015

Well, here we are in the final month of our quilting guild year. The past

nine months have been filled with so much in our lives. Some have experi-

enced great sadness where loved ones have been ill or passed away. There

also have been joys with new babies coming into our world, children

graduating, loved ones accomplishing wonderful things in their lives.

Within the guild we have also achieved so much with the hard work of so

many of our members. The Spotlight Speakers have shared their quilting

journey with us, some new to the craft and some very experienced. We

have enjoyed demos from guild members and speakers from outside along

with workshops to challenge us. Challenges also came with our Mystery

Quilt, (I cant wait to see all the different choices!!) and Presidents Chal-

lenge. We had our first garage sale, introduced our Constitution and By-

laws and a members Handbook. We have a wonderful new space to

stretch out in, have had amazing show and tell and created so many cuddle

quilts, baby quilts and special quilts for our extended family in the commu-

nity. The June meeting should be lots of fun with our pot luck dinner and

prizes so dont forget to bring your challenge apron!!

The Apron, perhaps an unusual choice for the Presidents Challenge but for

me it still brings back memories of being a kid, seeing my mom and grand-

mother around the house, especially the kitchen, always wearing their

    aprons.

No one really knows when aprons were actually invented; they just came

to be probably when a piece of cloth was wrapped around a dress to pro-

tect it. People didnt have the luxury of having a large wardrobe and cer-

tainly washing clothes was a real chore so we developed aprons to cover

clothing from everyday wear and dirt. A clean apron each day or two was

much easier to maintain, your dress only requiring its weekly wash.

Later aprons became decorative as well, in the 20s and 30s mimicking the long silhouette of the

dresses, later cinching at the waist with the fashion of the 40s. Brightly patterned feed sacs were often

the fabric of choice with embellishments of pockets, buttons and ric-rack. They became almost a uniform

for the housewife of the 50s. Check out old reruns of family shows of that time and you will nearly al-

ways see mom in her apron.

I think in the 70s and 80s women moved out of the home to jobs and the apron lost its popularity and

was relegated to barbeques and restaurant workers. Lately though women have been looking back at

what their grandmother and mothers had emulating them in their own way, discovering the usefulness

and even the beauty of the simple apron

The strings were tied; it was freshly washed, and maybe even pressed.

For Grandma, it was everyday to choose one when she dressed.

    The simple apron that it was, you would never think about;

the things she used it for, that made it look worn out.

She may have used it to hold some wildflowers that she'd found. Or to hide a crying child's face when a stranger came around.

Imagine all the little tears that were wiped with just that cloth.

Or it became a potholder to serve some chicken broth.

She probably carried kindling to stoke the kitchen fire.

To hold a load of laundry, or to wipe the clothesline wire.

When canning all her vegetables, it was used to wipe her brow.

You never know, she might have used it to shoo flies from the cow.

She might have carried eggs in from the chicken coop outside.

Whatever chore she used it for, she did them all with pride.

When Grandma went to heaven, God said she now could rest.

I'm sure the apron that she chose, was her Sunday best.

Presidents Challenge - Candy and Leslie

It is time - please plan to bring your Aprons to our June meeting. We would love to see how everyone used the President Challenge Fabrics. A re-minder there were 2 colour ways. You only had to use one of the four fabrics and it can be any where on the apron and any size. When you arrive please sign in and receive a number for your apron. Your apron will be displayed on the tables against the walls and voted on by your fellow members . After Break - we will ask you to model your apron so we can see, who made what.

Prizes will be awarded by the President and voted upon by members for first, second and third place. Good Luck to EVERYONE.......

We will be having lots of prizes for the raffle like we did at Christmas, as well as the ever popular 50-

50 draw. Please come prepared to participate at our June meeting !!!

Cuddle Quilts - Pat & the cuddle quilt team

My Journey with Fabric I have had an amazing journey with fabric since we started this guild 3 years ago . This journey has taken on so many challenges from our 1st meeting. We did not know how many new faces we would have, but it has been exciting meeting each and every one of you. And we even had to move to a larger location to accommodate 70 plus members, from the museum to the Seniors Centre in Grimsby! We have new members joining every month, bringing new ideas and techniques to make our guild work as a team. Cuddle Quilts... We have grown so fast over the years, but it is the generosity from all our members which has made our Cuddle quilt program work! I would like to thank everyone! You have truly made my passion for making quilts so easy for me to enjoy every month. Monday sewing is also growing, and we have a team of ladies who bring "quilters show and tell", from donated fabric to make some unexpected combinations into a amazing quilts to give to our local commu-nities; GBF Grimsby and WLCC Smithville. Saturday sewing morning was a huge success, thanks to all the ladies who came out to sew for a few hours. We have 104 quilts made since we started our quilting year in Sept 2014 till May 2015. We will have our grand total to present at our June meeting, so please bring in any quilts you have finished. And we will have kits completed for anyone that is interested in to work on over the summer. We will be selling tickets on our beautiful blue quilt, 3 for $ 5.00 Thank you from Cuddle Quilt Team .
