The snowdrops I was waiting for have in fact popped up and lots of other little flowers are also bravely showing their greenery, so we are really not too badly off here in the Grimsby area. My husband and I just returned from seeing family in Dartmouth last week. Now they may have reason to be grouchy. The snow banks are so huge that in order for my sister in law to get out of her driveway her husband has to run upstairs to a top floor window and signal to her when the coast is clear! His car is still frozen in, half buried in snow and ice. They still have four feet at least on the ground and the banks are 10 or 12 feet high! So, cool is not too bad. I was contemplating on what to talk about this month when I came across an article on “Facts vs. Myths” in quilting’s past. I think a common romantic vision we all share from old books and stories is of pioneering women hav- ing a quilting bee. All the neighbours would be invited to a “quilting” where women took turns at the frame while others prepared a grand meal for the men followed by singing and dancing. Although this did occasionally hap- pen it was not nearly as common as we think. Much more likely was a gathering of a few neighbours to help someone fin- ish their quilt, socialize, exchange a few recipes and support each other. Even this may be a bit romanticized because women of that time were not much different than quilters today. There were many levels of experience and unless you were making an everyday quilt you would want the quilting to be the very best. You would either do it yourself, (great pride was taken in completely hand quilting your own piece), or invite the very best quilters, an exclusive group. It was therefore a social asset to be a good hand quilter. On the other hand if it was just a social day, perhaps for a bride to be, young women, beginners would be welcome along with the experienced. Con’t on page 3...

I hope everyone had a beautiful Easter this past weekend, visit-ing family and friends and over indulging in chocolate. My Granddaughter was wearing her new pretty little spring dress on Sunday and nearly froze in the snow. Ok, she did have a sweater but seri-ously!!

I was contemplating on what to talk about this month when I came across an article on Facts vs. Myths in quiltings past. I think a common romantic vision we all share from old books and stories is of pioneering women hav-ing a quilting bee. All the neighbours would be invited to a quilting where women took turns at the frame while others prepared a grand meal for the men followed by singing and dancing. Although this did occasionally hap-pen it was not nearly as common as we think.

Much more likely was a gathering of a few neighbours to help someone fin-ish their quilt, socialize, exchange a few recipes and support each other. Condolences are sent to Candy and her family on the passing of her mother in law. Condolences from the Exec team and guild members to Leslie and her family, on the passing of her Mom, Joan. A reminder to our members who volunteered to picked up fabric to take home and make a square for Hearts and Flowers Baby Quilts. Can you please return your finished squares to our April meeting. Thanking you in advance for your help and support. If you know of a guild member who is celebrating a special occasion, needs a note of comfort or inspira-tions, or has suffered a loss, please e-mail [email protected] and the guild will send a note of encouragement and support.

    Hearts & Flowers - Leslie

In rural or isolated areas it was difficult to get a group of women together. Many did not have large homes, often log cabins or dugouts so there was just no room for a large quilting frame or for a large group of people to assemble. Sometimes the frame was made from four sturdy lengths of wood with wool cloth at either end to pin or baste the quilt to. This was often supported on two ladder back chairs or propped up on other pieces of furniture in a crowded room where two or three women could manage. Another innova-

tive solution was to rig a system where the quilt on the frame could be dropped down from the ceiling when quilting was in progress then raised, over a bed or living area, when not in use. Anyone who had a parlour or extra bed room to leave a frame up permanently became the center for neighborly quilting especially if warmed with a fireplace. Handmade quilt frames were all there was un-til the early part of the twentieth century when mail order frames became commercially available. Even then the handmade ones were often preferred.

Occasionally when the weather was nice a frame could easily be moved outside or in a screened porch and a larger group could participate.

As always, everything changes but everything stays the same! We still gather into groups to quilt, some-times two or three, sometimes a workshop of fifteen. We sew and socialize, solve each others problems, exchange recipes and support each other as women have been doing forever, only we may be using a few different innovate tools. How wonderful is that?

We have donated 13 quilts to GBF for Easter hampers that are going out to our community. And we also donated 6 quilts to WLCC (West Lincoln Community Care ) in Smithville. It is amazing the amount of fabric we have moved since we started Grimsby Quilters Guild in Sept 2012. The "left over fabric", which we have made into beautiful quilts sure makes me smile a lot. We are making such a difference with our one of a kind-quilts for our local communities and I would like to say without your help and donations, this program would not work. So thank you to all! Through our wonderful guild, we are moving forward helping Grimsby GBF and WLCC in Smithville. I am so proud of all our members who have donated fabric, time, kits and all works which goes into mak-ing Cuddle Quilts a success! Monday afternoon sewing is a new pathway into the land of quilting with new quilting friends. We have ladies who have special talents for organizing strips, squares, stash which needs sorting and having fun making quilts.
