The Executive have been busy planning for these next two meetings since we have so much going on. May is election month. The Elections Commit- tee has been hard at work recruiting our wonderful members for open po- sitions and the response has been fantastic. It is so important for every member to become involved even in a small way. It’s a learning curve for all of us but the support is there and so is the fun! Our May meeting also showcases a fantastic guest speaker, Kathy Wylie, (and her workshop the following day) as well as member spotlight with Carol Dinsmore. One of the items on the Executive to-do list this year was to look at our logo with an eye toward simplifying it so that it could be used on letter- heads, name tags, business cards, brochures, all promoting our guild and speaking to the heart of our philosophy. Several ideas were bounced around but the one that resonated with every- one the most was the Friendship Star. Sara Lister has created a design us- ing colours that encompasses both the heart of Grimsby and the positive nature of our Grimsby Guild. As a little background, Grimsby was known, as far back as the 1700’s, as “The Garden of Canada”. During the American Revolution, United Empire Loyalists fled the Thirteen Colonies and settled in the area. Because of the moderate climate and un- usually fantastic soil, they were able to grow tender fruits such as peaches, pears, cherries, plums, apples, grapes and tomatoes. With the railway nearby and then in 1850 the Hamilton, Grimsby and Beamsville Electric railway, growers were able to ship their fruit everywhere. Con’t on page 3...

    Hearts & Flowers - Leslie

A special thank you to all of the ladies who helped to make a block for our two Hearts and Flowers quilt. If you have not handed in yet - can you please plan to do so at our May meeting. Don't forget to pick up your thank you FQ for your efforts. You are SPECIAL ! If you know of a guild member who is celebrating a special occasion, needs a note of comfort or inspira-tion, or has suffered a loss. Please e-mail [email protected] and the guild will send a note of encouragement and support.

Local industries such as basket making and tools flourished and supported the fruit shipping business. Canneries, distilleries, wineries grew and cold storage methods were researched so that local produce could be sent around the world. The beauty of the area was, and is, undeniable, fruit tree blossoms, the escarpment, the lake; truly the Garden of Canada. In 2007 the Town of Grimsby wanted to continue to draw visitors, residents and businesses to the area so a new brand was created. The history, the beauty of the landscape and the inviting, warm spirit of the residents were incorporated into the theme and it became Grimsby, Friendly by Nature. We will show the Grimsby Quilters Guild new logo at our next meeting. Although the design is simple, it blends our green spaces, our beautiful lakes and rivers, the clean clear air and of course, being the friendship star, fits in perfectly with Friendly by Nature. Its who we are and who we will continue to strive to be. We hope that you are as excited about our new design as we in the Executive are, and can all look for-

ward to it becoming an integral part of GQGs image and culture.

    Membership spot-light on Carol D

My name is Carol Dinsmore. I was born in Lachine, Quebec but did not live there as my father was stationed in Petawawa and after the war was over we moved to Hamilton. I attended G. L. Armstrong, Hillcrest, Parkdale, W. H. Ballard public schools and Delta S. S. I also attended Mohawk College (night school) but not until my

children were teenagers and I have a degree in fashion design. I worked in a dental office most of my life as a dental assistant and receptionist. I have been retired for 12 years. I have been married to my husband John for 50 years and have a daughter Siobhan, a son John, a son in law Brian and two grandchildren Esme (16) and Emily (13). No one has quilted in my family, although my mother made all her daughters (4 of them) clothing. I have been quilting for only 3 years now although I have been sewing since I was a teenager. I started quilting because I felt the need to do something for me and I also could leave a little of me behind for my granddaughters. I love sewing and I also love hand sewing. There is nothing nicer than watching television with something in my hands to stitch. My least favourite part about quilting is cutting the fabric. I am still at the point of being afraid of cutting out the pieces wrongly, especially if I do not have a big piece of fabric. I know this will pass with time and practice. My favourite colours are pinks from light to dark, purple and greens. My least favourite colours to work with are brown and beige although I can certainly admire any quilt done in these colours.. My quilt stash is quite small, only one small drawer, but it is slowly growing. I have both a sewing machine and a serger. I feel like my right arm is missing whenever I have to have my sewing machine serviced and it is not available to me. My music list would include Barbra Streisand and Johnny Mathis. There are just too many good movies out there that I enjoy. Anything with Judy Dench, Maggie Smith and Meryl Streep.

I love Batiks. I love the colours and patterns. I quilt in the attic of my home. It is quite large and I can walk away from it, leave my mess behind and never worry that someone will see it. I enjoy doing cross stitch, applique, gardening and Scottish Country dancing. My television watching includes Sherlock Holmes, Downton Abbey, Endeavor, Last Tango to Halifax, Sel-fridges, Foyles War, Poirot and Rosemary and Thyme. My bucket list is to get to St. Petersburg and Iceland. My husband and I have just booked our trip for 2016. As far as travelling I would love to go to Amsterdam, Portugal and Spain. A perfect day in spring would be in the garden and in the winter up in the attic sewing.

We are having a special Kick-Off Event to celebrate the start of the Row by Row Experi-ence. We will have a wonderful day filled with spe-cial events, prizes, give-aways, and an amaz-ing display of Rows from Ontario and Western New York Quilt Shops. We hope that we can start each of your guild members off on their Row by Row Experience and hopefully inspire them to visit as many shops as they can

**** Time to Quilt, Bind, and label**** Did you know that most guilds boast if more than 10% of their members participate in their yearly BOM programs. They feel thrilled if they surpass this percentage. Our Grimsby Guild can share we have never been less than 50%. Please plan to bring your finished quilt or squares to our June meeting. We want to see what you have been up to this year and how many members actually partici-pated. We are aiming for Provincial bragging rights at next years inter-guild meeting. Thanks to Susan Therrien who compiled and re-sent out all of the instructions to our members last month. You still have time to participate if you want........
