I have summarized a study on the benefits of quilting that I found interest-
inghope you do as well.
A study found that quilting improved well-being in ways that physical and
outdoor activities could not, and offered a creativity that had been
stifled in the modern world (but then again we know that).
They interviewed quilters and found the activity helped their cognitive,
creative and emotional well-being, particularly among older people.
The use of bright colours was uplifting, the activity distracted from the
stress of work, and quilting offered challenges such as math and geome-
try. It also increased confidence and had an important social side.
Professor Jacqueline Atkinson, co-author of the study and a quilter herself
for five decades, said: Doing something that engages you and that you
enjoy is key. As adults, we dont often do enough that includes fun andplay. We put a lot into studying the use of green spaces and thats useful
to individuals and communities. 'But maybe we need to say there are
other things too.
The study concluded that: 'Whether it is growing vegetables, knitting a
jumper or discovering a new scientific formula creativity may be funda-
mental for wellbeing and has received little attention so far within public
health. 'Exploring creativity and what people do in their everyday lives,
which they deem creative, may be an important avenue for wellbeing pro-
moters. There is definitely an increase in groups doing quilting socially but
also individuals. 'Theres an emotive connection as well as financial need
to recycle. 'Historically older groups of women did quilting but women in
their early 20s are getting together and children's groups are also taking it
up. 'People are investing in quality pieces of quilting, but also looking to
make items themselves and re-use materials they have in their homes.
Professor Atkinson goes on to say I can only see the popularity of quilting
increasing (but then again we know that).

Cuddle Quilts - Pat & the cuddle quilt team
Just a few pictures to share from the December meeting
Diane was talking about finding inspiration on her vacation looking at roof tops how the pattern would
make a beautiful quilt. We already have so many inspirations from our own members with the beautiful
quilts they have made. It is amazing how you can use fabric from someone else, who has had a pattern
or a inspiration for a one of a kind quilt yet we can put all the ideas together and take a color from one
pile to add to another to make some of our cuddle quilts for our community.
Please keep up the great work of your own inspirations in making your quilts, what is left over and do-
nated is helping someone feel special in our community with our cuddle quilt program.
Our C.Q.T. has been working hard to sort and cut some plaid fabric to make into rag quilts for Easter
hampers for G.B.F. And any small pieces of any fabric and or batting is going towards placemats. Ladies
you are amazing I thank you!
Also a special thank you to the Seniors of Grimsby and Doris Allen from Smithville, who donated some
of their fabric to the guild to be used towards making cuddle quilts.
We will have some fabric and kits to make into more beautiful quilts, so let the inspiration begin.
Stay warm and Happy Quilting hope to see you on the 13th Feb at next meeting.

Tips & Tricks
Program - Sara & Pat
1. So: where do you find inspiration for your quilts?
I had the opportunity to visit a quilt show in November. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was like a kid in a candy store,
walking around staring at displays, the quilt exhibits and I picked up a few cool nick-knacks and fabric.
The whole time I was walking around, I was always thinking: what would Ido differently? What spin could Iput
on this pattern?
And then it got me to thinking: inspiration for our next projects is all around us. We just have to 'look' at what
we're 'seeing' in a less literal way.
Consider composing a collage of things you have looked at in the past when designing a quilt - because we all
know, a great quilt isn't just about great fabric - it's about great composition, too. Consider taking pictures of
whatever gives you inspiration, print them off or create a collage online. Step back and look at what you have
gathered...the colours, textures, themes. What an exciting way to start a new quilt project.
Here is an example of a collage:
We are very excited to have Ila Swayze with us this evening.
Ila has been teaching and quilting for over 20 years. She will be sharing with us information about how
to enter our beautiful quilts into the local fairs and how the quilts are judged and awarded prizes.
She will also be bringing some of her quilts to give us inspiration.
Thank you for making Ila feel welcome.

Tips & Tricks cont...
2. In order to cut a lot of pieces the same size more quickly, you can stack the strips.
The key is, though - you can't stack the strips one directly on top of each other - your ruler will wobble as you
try to cut.
So, trick of the day is: align your strips and stack them, offset of one another, like this, lining each strip you
stack along the grid lines on your cutting mat so as to ensure a straight cut:
This way your ruler wont wobble or teeterit will lay nice & flat on the fab-
rics and youll get nice cuts without shifting.
3. When I'm trying to decide which stitch to use when I'm about to quilt, I spend oodles of time trying out multiple
types, lengths, widths, tensions, etc.
So a solution is to create a stitch "reference" or "encyclopedia" for yourself.
SUPPLIES:
- 3-ring binder
- some clear plastic sleeves
- scrap solid fabric & batting pieces, just smaller than 8.5" x 11"
- contrasting thread
- fabric marker or sharpie
1. layer and pin-baste your fabrics and batting pieces.2. start playing! test each stitch at different lengths, widths, tensions, and make note of such right above your
stitching lines, like this:
(d'oh! I didn't use contrasting thread for this piece - sorry! )
Create an easy reference book so you will be able to decide what stitch to use the next time your quilting some-
thing and what a stitch other than a straight-stitch or FMQ.
Once done, put them all in plastic sleeves and into a 3-ring binder.
