DICTIONARYdefinition of a fence is “a bar-rier for enclosing, bounding or protecting.”Not by the wildest stretch of imaginationdoes this section of the infamous King Ed-ward Park fence (vicinity Duff and CarterStreets)evenremotely fallwithinthedefini-tion.

One wonders if Umvoti Municpality re-ceived a discount on the cost of R2 and halfmillion rand for this particular section of‘non-fence’ but after all, the contractor diderect those brick pillars for support - hope-fully included in the two plus million rand.

Residents in the area have told the Grey-

town Gazette that this is proving to be aneasy access to and from Duff, Carter andthen Ente Sreets. It has also been pointed out that the rate

of petty thieving has seriously increased inthis vicinity.

DRAMA is fun and makes learning activeand hands on. There is a growing aware-ness inearly yearseducation thatanessen-tial part of children’s development involvescreative engagement through language, gestures, body movements, drawing andmusic.

Takingpart in aperformance is an excel-lentway for children to improve their com-munication skills, imagination, concentra-tion and collaboration skills.

Drama also has a hugely positive effecton self-confidence, and this can be benefi-cial in school, career and life.

AtNewHanoverPrep,during the last two

weeks of the third term, there were threedifferent musical theatre evenings held atthe school.

The tale of Captain Hook and Peter Panwas performed by the Grade four’s andfive’s.This classicpantomimesees thecun-ning and menacing Captain Hook seekingrevenge on Pan. An enjoyable and enter-taining evening was had by all. The Gradetwo’s adapted the famous Roald Dahl storyof the Three Little Pigs, with the big badwolf being a dinosaur. The Grade three’s,who have been studying the jungle, enter-tained familyand friendswith “It’s a JungleOut There!”

HERMANNSBURG musicians’ outstanding talentshave once again received recognition at the prestigious South African Music Teachers’ Associationprize winners’ dinner held on 22 October.Schools from the entire midlands region were represented at the gala occasion, where invitationsto attend are only extended to those who achievedistinctions in their Royal Schools (ABRSM), Trinity Colleges and/or UNISA music examinations.

No fewer than six of our musicians were invitedto attend this year, with four receiving special recognition at the dinner. Chantal Jonker receivedthe ABRSM junior vocal award and medal for thehighest distinction, while Rhonda Christiansenand Laura Zick each received the ABRSM intermediate vocal award and shared the medal for thehighest distinction. Zanda Isaacs received theABRSM senior vocal award. Jordan Pope andMeike Meyer both achieved distinctions in theirrespective examinations and were welcomed asgrowing musical talents.

Zanda Isaacs followed in the footsteps of two

former Hermannsburg head girls, Nadia Ortmannand Daniella Dedekind, when she was awardedthe Sheila Harland vocal award for achieving thehighest distinction, on average, in the senior division of Royal Schools, Trinity Colleges and UNISAcombined. High honours indeed and welldeserved we congratulate all our musicians on theirpraiseworthy achievements.

In more choral news, we congratulate eight ofour top vocalists, Rhonda Christiansen, JordanPope, Meike Meyer, Monika Lucht, Laura Zick, Danielle Schweiger, Rupert Meyer and Stephan Küsel,on being selected to sing in the KZN Youth Choirfollowing the recent selection auditions. The choirhopes to go to Poland in 2015, which will be ahugely enriching experience for our choristers.

Our U13 cricketers played against Wartburg lastweek. Wartburg batted first, making 90 runs intheir 20 overs for the loss of seven wickets. Hermannsburg replied with a cracking 22 runs in threeovers before the match unfortunately had to becalled off due to lightning and heavy rain.
