FOR the many motor-ists using the Mooi Riv-er/Rietvlei/Greytownroad, it’s more a caseof zigzagging aroundthe multiple potholes, hoping that not anothertyre is about to be writ-ten off.
Regular users of thisstretch of road have ac-tually lost count of thenumber of times theKZN Department ofTransport’s road de-partments have ap-pointed contractors tofill the potholes - no oneis able to confirmwhether the contrac-
tors are perhaps in-structed to ‘fix’ the pot-holes on a temporarybasis to ensure repeatcontracts.
Whilst residents ofthe area are well awareof the pothole pitfalls, itismiraculous that therehave been no fatal acci-dents when out of townmotorists, unaware ofthedangersof this road, are driving along it - es-pecially on a rainynight. Here’s hoping thepowers to be will pro-motepermanently fixedpotholes rather thanpermanent potholes.
POTHOLESpromoted to permanent status
APPLICATIONS for special votes in this year’s national and provincial elections open on Monday,7 April and run until Thursday, 17 April between9am and 5pm at local IEC offices (Greytown, BellStreet opposite the town offices).

1. Home visits: Election officials will visit voterswho have successfully applied for a home visitdue to physical infirmity, disability or pregnancy.Home visits will be conducted on Monday, 5 Mayand on Tuesday 6, May. 2. Special voting at yourregistered voting station: Any voters who will beabsent from the voting district where they are

Thesemust be submitted by hand to the local IEC officein the municipality responsible for the voting district where the special vote is to be cast. Specialvote applicants may use a proxy to deliver theVEC 1 form to the local IEC office in the municipali
ty where they intend to vote, but the form itselfmust be signed by the voter. MUDEN pecan nut growers havehad enough of thieves helpingthemselves to the nuts in largequantities, resulting in losses ofwell over R100 000 to some grow-ers. The message being sent outto thieves this season is zero toler-ance, and comprehensive securityand protection measures havebeen put into operation to curbtheft and prosecute anyone foundstealing the crop.
The growers, together withSAPS personnel and Buffalo Secu-rity, will be holding road blocks -vehicleswill be searchedand if pe-cannuts found, theremustbeade-livery note with the date, time andfarmers’ name.
If the person cannot provewhere the pecan nuts have beenbought a case of theft will beopened and prosecution will fol-low. Under the Criminal Proce-dures Act, the onus is on the per-son in possession of stolen goodsto prove that the goods have notbeen stolen.
An urgent appeal is also madeto members of the public not tosupport the stolen nut trade bybuying from non-recognisedsources. In support of the farmers’tough stance, thieves should beaware of the fact that althoughpe-can nuts look the same, they areactually unique, and like a stockfarmer can recognize his own ani-mals, a pecan nut farmer can rec-ognize his varieties. Most of thepecan varieties are named afterAmerican Red Indian tribes -Choctaw, Pawnee, and Mohawk -and each variety has their ownunique characteristics regardingsize, shape and coloration.
A quick DNA test will confirmwhere the nuts originated.
Asubstantial reward isbeingof-fered for any information leadingto the arrest and conviction of pe-can nut thieves. Anyone with anyinformation is asked to phone thedesignated, confidential linewhich has been set up for phone-calls or sms’s to 076 540 0547.

A PROTEST was held last month by com-munity members who blocked the en-trance to Greytown Hospital.
The protesters claim that the hospitalmanagement had a tendency to employpeople from outside the area, even for themost menial posts.
The community accused an HR officialofdemandingbribes for jobsandnepotism.
He has been removed from his positionin the local hospital and relocated whilstan investigation into theaccusations is car-ried out.
As a result, KZN MEC for health, Dr
Sibongiseni Dhlomo, visited the hospitallast week and also met with board mem-bers.
He informed the community that newemployment conditions would be imple-mented at the start of the next financialyear.
“All other opportunities from level oneup to four, in and aroundGreytown, shouldbe biased towards local people, becausethere are somanypeoplewhohave just gotGrade 12 and they can actually performjobs like cleaning and cooking,” said Dhlo-mo.

THE Hermannsburg Nature Club recent-ly went on an exciting weekend campingouting where Francois du Rant, a localtree expert in the False Bay Park, wasable to introduce them to a host of localtrees and each one had an anecdote oran interesting fact or two to go withit.
Besides tree spotting, the groupwas also able to do some bird-watching.
A trip through the newly opened west-ern shores drive in the IsimangalisoWetland Park offered an opportunity tomarvel at some large game - hippos, awide variety of antelope, giraffe, warth-og, to name but a few.
Sadly, although there were 24 pairs ofsharp youthful eyes trained on thebush, the elusive leopard remained elu-sive - until the next time.
A weekend is not a long time whenthere is so much to see and do, but thegroup made the most of the opportuni-ties available to them and managed topack a whole lot of looking and learninginto the time available.

THE Office of the KZN Pre-mier has partnered withMedia24 – owners of KZN
local news – to bring the highlysuccessful spelling bee project tothe whole of KZN.
The spelling bee began in theZululand community in 2010,through Media24’s local newspa-per in that area, the Zululand Fe-ver.
Because of the success of theevent, and its rapid growth,Media24 mandated that it be tak-en throughout the KZN province.
The Office of the Premier, inits ongoing commitment to youtheducation and upliftment, has de-cided to partner with KZN localnews(encompassing Fever, Week-ly,Gazette and Echotitles) to incul-cate a love of the English lan-guage amongst second languageEnglish speakers from disadvan-taged schools in the province.
Media24’s head of local papersin South Africa, Ishmet Davidson, said the company is ‘thrilled’ atthe prospect of the partnership.
He said this will see hundreds
of spellers throughout the prov-ince take part in the competition, which has hundreds of thousandsof rands in cash, book and bursaryprizes up for grabs.
“Media24 sees the spelling beeinitiative as having the potentialto significantly increase the focusand discipline of pupils when itcomes to learning the English lan-guage. Partnering with The Officeof the Premier, schools and teach-ers,webelieve wecanmakeaposi-tive impact on education in theprovince,” said Davidson.
Pupils ‘get loose’ to shake out the tension before spelling starts at the Zululand Spelling Bee 2013.

CALLING all word wizards andbook nerds.
Media24 Local News KZN(publishers of the Fever, Echo,Gazette and Weekly titles) haspartnered with the Office of thePremier to bring previously dis-advantaged learners throughoutthe province their popular spell-ing bee competition.
A spelling bee works accord-ing to knock-out, where spellersare given a list of pre-chosenwords (which will be printedin the abovementioned titles)two months before the competi-tion.
These words have to belearned by entrants, who willthen gather at competitions intheir areas, namely Zululand,North Coast, Durban central, Pi-etermaritzburg, or the SouthCoast, to spell their way to glory.
The competition is open to
grade 10 and 11 learners (onefrom each grade – ie two perschool) from previously disad-vantaged schools who speakEnglish as a second language.
There are hundreds of thou-sands of rands in prizes up forgrabs, including a full medicalbursary, a business bursary anda bursary to study journalism.Teachers and schools also re-ceive prizes.
