Why a project?

GREDOR - Gestion des Réseaux Electriques de Distribution Ouverts aux Renouvelables

Introduction of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in electric distribution grid induces a change of paradigm

”Going from centralized energy production to decentralized production”

“Going from unidirectional power flows to bidirectional power flows”

BUT this change has not been followed by the distribution grid design!

Distribution Grid was originally designed to bring electricity to the final consumers. It is now also used as an entry point for renewable energy thus increasing the risk of congestion!

Today’s situation

Why a project?

GREDOR - Gestion des Réseaux Electriques de Distribution Ouverts aux Renouvelables

This change of paradigm is associated with

Growing electrification (Electric Vehicles, Heat Pumps,… )

Challenges induced by the intermittent production of RES (solar, wind,…)

leading to a need for huge changes in the design and operation of distribution grids

If nothing changes

Evolution of RES integration will slow down

Quality of power supply may decrease

Distribution costs may increase

GREDOR is a research project funded by the Walloon Region with two main objectives

1. Define and Analyze market models including e.g. integration of flexibility services, renewable energy sources…

2. Implement decision making support tools for distribution grid operators in order to help them evolve in this new landscape by taking optimal decisions for the social welfare

Total Budget: 4,3 M€

Five main tasks shared between the Partners1. Design and recommendation for a new market model

2. Design and development of a decision making support tool for grid investments

3. Design and development of a decision making support tool for short term congestion management

4. Design and development of a decision making support tool for real time congestion management

5. Customization of production and consumption data to create use cases for testing the different decision making systems

Objectives of the project

GREDOR - Gestion des Réseaux Electriques de Distribution Ouverts aux Renouvelables 6

Long Term Grid Investments

Short Term Congestion Management

Real-Time Congestion Management

How to define the path

towards smart grids

Which type of investments should be made?

How to take into account RES and flexibility services in investment decisions?

How to define action plan (network reconfiguration, flex services,…) in order to manage short term congestion?

Which actions may affect other stakeholders ? How to deal with this? Which data should be exchanged?

How to solve in real-time a congestion

Which action should be taken?

Which data should be exchanged?

WP 2 WP 3 WP 4

Market Models + Scenarios How to deal with actual and new stakeholders in order to optimize RES integration, achieve active

network management, avoid/prevent congestion and call for flexibility services in such a way that social welfare is optimized and system balance is ensured
