We have a unique voice in the health care field and we call on every member of the PHC family to spread the word that PHC cares deeply and passionately about how we treat everyone associated with our organization. All of the elements of our visual identity are designed to build consistency and professionalism in all uses to reinforce our key messages and build our overall identity.

The Providence Health Care logo is based on the lotus, a beautiful flower known for its ability to blossom in adverse conditions. The lotus is associated with very deep spiritual-ity in a variety of different cultures. This speaks to both PHC’s Catholic roots and our belief in diversity. The lotus also remains productive very late in its life span, a tribute to our approach to seniors in care. The bottom of the “P” embraces the lotus as a gesture of our caring. The script text in Providence draws attention to our heritage while the cleaner, sans serif font in “Health Care” highlights our use of futuristic technology and research as well as our commitment to excellence.

The logo should always be reproduced from electronic artwork and never distorted or resized disproportion-ately. The relationship of its components should never be altered. Please always use a period at the end of the positioning line “How you want to be treated.”.

Whenever possible, reproduce the signature in both official colours: PHC Blue (Pantone 2757) and PHC Ochre (Pantone 7414)

When only one colour is possible, reproduce the signature in either PHC Blue or black.

You can also reverse the signatures from a solid background colour (preferably PHC Blue)

Minimum SizeMinimum size restrictions ensure that our signatures are always clearly legible. Minimum size for the PHC logo is 0.75 inches wide.

Core and Secondary ColoursOur visual identity includes a palette of secondary colours that complement the PHC core colours, Blue and Ochre, and allow for greater variety in our publication and promotional items.

Clear ZoneTo make sure that our signatures stand out clearly, they are always framed with an area of unobstructed space. This space must be at least the height of the name in the signature, shown in the diagram as X. Every effort shoud be made to include the positioning line with the PHC logo.

  • Nurturing the legacy of the Founding Sistersthrough our commitment to practical charity and compassionate care.

    “ ”

Twice a year, Providence Health Care staff and volunteers help hundreds

of residents of the Downtown Eastside, by providing clothing, blankets,

healthy lunches and a variety of toiletries to those in need at Vancouver’s

Oppenheimer Park. The fall 2009 Providence in the Park event saw PHC

hand out a total of 400 cups of coffee, 300 sandwiches, 200 hot meals,

120 boxes of clothes, and 300 toiletry kits. Especially popular with male

residents is the opportunity for a haircut. Staff and volunteers provide

the grooming service free of charge.

Our faith-based organization has a 115-year history of serving the needs

of our community and province. Inspired by this rich history, our staff and

volunteers continue to give contemporary expression to the compassion-

ate legacy of the Sisters who founded our hospitals.

Your Anesthesia Doctor has placed a “nerve catheter” around the nerves that give feeling to your foot.

The nerve catheter you have is called a _________________________ catheter.

ImportantKeep this information sheet handy. While your nerve catheter is in place, the Anesthesia doctor or an assistant will be calling you every day to ask how you are doing.

You had a Lower Limb Nerve Block before your surgery. The nerve block medicine usually makes your foot very numb for 6 to 16 hours. Some people find that once the numbing medicine wears off (and if they don’t have a nerve catheter), their pain is not always well controlled.

This is where the nerve catheter comes in. It is connected to a small pump that has a weaker numbing medicine in it. We call it the ‘pain pump’. The pain pump gives you a slow, continuous drip of the numbing medicine through your nerve catheter. Once the injection from your surgery wears off, the pain pump takes over to help control your pain. The catheter is usually left in place for 1 to 4 days after your surgery, depending on your level of pain.

Will my leg stay numb with this catheter?During this time, some people continue to have a numb, weak leg and some people do not.

What if I am still feeling pain?If you are feeling pain with just the drip of weaker numbing medicine, you can press the button on your pump to get an extra dose of this medicine.

After you have pressed the pump button, wait 15 minutes to see if you are still having pain. If you are still having pain, you can take your pain pills as directed by your surgeon.

    PHC -TCNF341 (April 10)

Lower Limb Nerve CatheterCare at Home

You can push the pump button every 30 minutes if needed. You can use the pain pump and your pain pills together as you need to, depending on how much pain you are having.

How do I look after my leg and foot?Put your leg up while sitting. While lying down, put your leg up on pillows. Do this as much as possible for the first 24 hours after surgery. This helps to prevent swelling.

Depending on your surgery, you may have a brace or a cast of some kind. Wear your brace or cast as directed by your surgeon.

Keep your foot and leg away from things that may be hot or cold. If your surgeon tells you to use an ice pack, do so as directed. Remember the feeling in your leg is less than normal. You may not be able to feel if something is too hot or too cold.

For your safety, do not drive.

To move around, use a walker, crutches, or wheelchair (which ever your surgeon suggested you use).

How do I look after my nerve catheter? All you need to do is keep your nerve catheter site and pain pump clean and dry.

Once the Anesthesia doctor tells you it is okay, you can take your nerve catheter out. Don’t worry. It is easy to take out. The doctor tells you how to do it over the phone. After the catheter is out, throw the catheter and the pain pump into the garbage.

If you have any concerns about your nerve catheter, call St Paul’s Hospital at 604-682-2344. Ask to speak to the Anesthesia doctor on call.
