GRANT FUNDING NEWSLETTER

All Points North Foundation supports 30 STEM

Clubs

All Points North Foundation has awarded BCPS a grant of $60,000 to engage nearly 750 middle grade students in STEM and computer science to creatively solve problems by utilizing technology and engineering. This will create more opportunities for all young people to develop confidence, creativity, and interest in STEM career fields. The success of this project will be measured through participation in the learning community by the 30 schools throughout the year and the participation of students in Code Clubs, workshops, and a culminating end of the year CodeFest. The CodeFest will celebrate the success of the project by having students showcase what they accomplished during the 2018/19 school year. GAGP staff worked closely with the STEM team in the Applied Learning Department to establish the relationship with the donor and to develop and submit the proposal.

Special thanks to the Broward Education Foundation for application partnership and Sheri Brown at the Community Foundation of Broward for the referral.

BCPS Receives Three Grants to Support School

Safety Under the STOP School Violence Act

BCPS is proud to receive three recent grant awards from the U.S. Department of Justice. The combined total of the three grants is more than $1.3 million to support school-safety related programs across BCPS. The grants are authorized by the STOP School Violence Act and are intended to improve school security by reducing exposure to risks, preventing actions of violence, and recognizing and responding to violent acts.

Hurricane Irma School Restart Grant

The Florida Department of Education has awarded BCPS a grant of $7,967,597 for expenses related to the restart of schools affected by Hurricane Irma. Funds will be used

by the academic and guidance staff who worked to reinstate schools and provide support to students; replacement of damaged instructional materials; and infrastructure repairs. GAGP staff supported the Office of the Chief Financial Officer in developing the application by coordinating internal proposal planning meetings; writing the narrative; reviewing the budget; and ensuring a complete and timely submission.

Dart Foundation Expands Support

The Dart Foundation has awarded $30,045 to establish a makerspace at Crystal Lake Middle School. Grant funds will be used to develop a school-based makerspace that will be available after school for local BCPS middle school students and will allow them to learn through hands-on discovery facilitated by teachers, high school mentors, and community volunteers. GAGP staff were responsible for identifying the grant source through relationship cultivation, gathering application information from the department, compiling the grant narrative and preparing the budget documents. Thank you, Dr. Lisa Milenkovic, Supervisor, STEM+Computer Science – Applied Learning and team for supporting Broward students through grant writing.

BCPS Receives $14 Million Magnet Schools

Assistance Program Grant

The U.S. Department of Education’s Magnet Schools Assistance Program (MSAP) grant of $14,000,000 will support the launch of the Integrated Career and Academic Networks (iCAN) magnet theme at six schools. Through the iCAN magnet programs, students will participate in project-based and blended learning, develop workplace and technology skills, and engage in mentoring by a network of advisors from various industries and postsecondary institutions. BCPS is one of four school districts in the nation and the only district in Florida to receive funding in 2018, which is implemented over five years to support the development of magnet schools. Congratulations to the Innovative Programs team on winning the grant!

Years of Service: Lucille 18 and Christy 27

How many grants have you been awarded and what is the total dollar amount awarded? Lucille - I started at CTACE in January of 2017, and as of this date I've been awarded two grants totaling $300,000.

Christy - In my five years at CTACE, I have been awarded eight grants. Totaling approximately $5,000,000.

GRANT FUNDING NEWSLETTER

Christy - I have three favorite grants: 1) Out of School Youth from CareerSource Broward. This grant supports adults aged 17-24 who have not earned their high school diploma-get their GED, have a paid work experience and become permanently employed. Many of these students now work for BCPS. 2) Grow Your Future from the University of Central Florida. This grant is placed at McFatter Technical College and provides students with Intellectual Disabilities paid tuition and support to earn a local agri-science certificate and enroll in the Culinary program at McFatter. We just had our first student earn their Servsafe Industry Certification! 3) Teacher Pathway Initiative from the USDOE supports teachers and students from Broward College in the teacher preparation program to earn a Business Education Certification to focus on increasing CTE Computer Science/Information Technology in BCPS.

What is your process for filling out a grant application? Christy - The workforce team at CTACE including facilitators, supervisor, and CTACE Director, Enid Valdez work together to discuss ideas, timeline and complete proposals.

Lucille - The CTACE team definitely works together, under the direction of Mrs. Enid Valdez, CTACE Director. We write an outline of the scope of the project, and then fill in the details as the grant requires. I have leaned on the Grants department as well. They are the experts, and it sure shows when they give feedback and help with edits. (Thanks Rebecca !!)

Do you have any grant writing tips? Lucille - I'm still in my early grant writing stage, however, the more grants I write, the better I get, so I would say keep at it.

Christy - Do your homework and research if there are similar grants across the country. Read as many proposals and learn from their outcomes. Be creative!

Grants are a powerful tool to enhance teaching and learning throughout our District. Please take the opportunity to have your grants showcased in one of our upcoming newsletters by submitting your photos with the subject line Grants In Action, and email your action photographs of activities associated with grant awards to [email protected]. This is another opportunity to acknowledge our grant donors for their support and to showcase the innovative learning experiences developed by our school based staff!

“We are so thankful to have a grants person to rely on and meet with regularly for technical assistance.” Head Start/Early Intervention Team

TIP for the Day: School Grant Application Tips

The following tips are for educators about to embark on the school grant application process for the first time. Retrieved from fundraiserhelp.com/school-grant-application-tips.

Have a clear plan for your project. Know what you want to accomplish and the steps you will take to do it.

If you can find grants that others have submitted, read them and get a feel for the writing. (Don’t copy any grant proposal!)

Find out in advance what kinds of projects the granter will and will not fund.

Try to have a “hook” — something different that will make your grant stand out from the many submissions. Including a story or a picture is a great way to engage your reader.

Include statistics. Prove your points. Don’t just say students can’t read. Give facts to back up your claims.

Make sure your goals are measurable and realistic. You can’t realistically say 100 percent of students will read above grade level at the completion of the project.

Do not make your grant tech heavy. Everyone wants equipment. Make the equipment a byproduct of the project: ‘it just so happens’ that a few handheld computers are needed to improve students’ ability to meet the desired goal. Student or staff achievement should be the focus of your proposal.

Be sure to include the necessary staff development to make the project a success. Too many people skimp on that area.

Make sure the timeline of the grant matches the grantor’s funding cycle. If that’s unknown, it’s better to use ‘phase 1’ and ‘phase 2’ or ‘month’ 1, 2, 3, etc. than specific dates.

Don’t give up because you’re rejected. It takes time and dedication to get projects funded.

If you are rejected, submit the same project to different groups, companies, and organizations. Just be sure to make improvements and change the format, if necessary, to meet the new criteria.
