CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
is the unique number given to an item to record its addition to the library.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
is a classification using the main division and subdivisions of a scheme without breaking down into a narrower concepts.
is a number on a library item consisting of classification, a book number and often a locating symbol.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
means specifically defined division in a system of classification; a class.
a general class of ideas, terms, or things that mark divisions or coordinations within a conceptual scheme.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
Categorization is the process in which ideas and objects are recognized, differentiated and understood.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
Categorization implies that objects are grouped into categories, usually for some specific purpose.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
Classical Categorization comes to us first from Plato, who, in his Statesman dialogue, introduces the approach of grouping objects based on their similar properties.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
This approach was further explored and systematized by Aristotle in his Categories treatise, where he analyzes the differences between classes and objects.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
Aristotle also applied intensively the classical categorization scheme in his approach to the classification of living beings (which uses the technique of applying successive narrowing questions such as "Is it an animal or vegetable?", "How many feet does it have?", "Does it have fur or feathers?", "Can it fly?"...), establishing this way is the basis for natural taxonomy.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
The classical Aristotelian view claims that categories are discrete entities characterized
by a set of properties which are shared by their members.
According to the classical view, categories should be clearly defined, mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive. This way, any entity of the given classification universe belongs unequivocally to one, and only one, of the proposed categories.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
is a system for arranging library
materials according to subject.
is the act of organizing the universe of
knowledge into some systematic order.CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION &
ARRANGEMENT
a set of numbers in a classification scheme which are
added to a number from the schedules to make a more specific number.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
is the classification of works to the fullest extent permitted by notation.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
is classifying as specifically as possible, using all available subdivisions scheme
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
A closed stack library contains books and other items that are not available for viewing or browsing by the general public.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
is a classification scheme devised by S.R. Ranganathan for Indian libraries, using numbers and letters , and a colon to separate different parts of the classification number.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
a system of author numbers, devised by Charles A. Cutter, beginning with the first letter of the author’s name and followed by numbers. Used in the Library of Congress.
Classification for authors, titles and geographic areas.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
is a classification scheme,
devised by Melvin Dewey in 1873, using numbers to represents subjects.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
is a classification which attempts to
spell out (enumerate) all the single and composite subjects required .
e.g. Library of Congress Classification
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
The Expansive Classification system is a library classification system devised by Charles Ammi Cutter. It uses all letters rather than digits (such as Dewey Decimal Classification) or a mixture of digits (such as Library of Congress classification), and was the basis for the top categories of the Library of Congress classification.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
an aspect or orientation of a topic.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
classification which allows for notation to be built up by the use of tables and other parts of the schedules.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
a classification scheme that identifies subjects by their component parts and requires fitting together the appropriate
parts in order to provide a class mark for a work.
Example, the Colon Classification is a faceted Scheme, while the DDC is partially so.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
items are labeled according to their physical location, rather than their intellectual content.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
is the ranked order of subjects in a classification scheme.
is the arrangement of a classification system from general to specific.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
is classification in which the division of subjects is from the most general to the most specific.
e.g. Dewey Decimal Classification. CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION &
ARRANGEMENT
is defined “as the systematic arrangement by subject of books and other material on shelves or
of catalogue and index entries in the manner which is most useful
to those who read or who seek a definite piece of information. CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION &
ARRANGEMENT
is a classification scheme developed by the Library of Congress, using numbers and letters.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
The quantity of works thathave been written on aspecific subject or topic.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
a systematic series of short
hand symbols use to denote classes and their subdivisions and to reveal relationships among subjects.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
o·pen-stack [oh-puhn-stak]
having or being a system of library management in which patrons have direct access to stacks for browsing and selecting books; open-shelf.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
Prototype theory is a cognitive theory of categorization that describes many aspects of MDSOC better than the classical theory of hierarchical categories.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
Prototype theory implies that composition is a more natural means of specifying components than is inheritance. Prototypes are useful in organizing information and work flows in component composition systems.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
items are placed in relationship to others depending on the subject.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
integrated shelving in which all physical formats of material are shelved in one sequence.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
a note describing the range and meaning of a term of classification number, especially where the use of the number is broader or narrower than is apparent from the heading.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
is a classification scheme developed by the International Federation for Information and
Documentation (FID) by expanding Dewey Decimal Classification.
