PLURAL NOUNS

♣ Plural nouns are words used to indicate that there is more than one person, animal,

place, thing, or idea.

♣ A plural noun is a word that indicates that there is more than one person, animal

place, thing, or idea.

♣ When you talk about more than one of anything, you’re using plural nouns.

♣ When you write about more than one of anything, you usually use the same word,

simply adding an s, es, or ies to the end. Refer to changes in the block below.

♣ There are a few exceptions to this rule, but not many e.g. 1 mouse = many mice not

many mouses.

♣ The difference between singular and plural nouns is easy to spot.

♣ When a noun indicates one only, it is a singular noun.

♣ When a noun indicates more than one, it is plural.

Singular Noun Examples1. The boy had a baseball in his hand.2. Your mom is going to be upset about that broken lamp.

Plural Noun Examples1. Those cats were chasing one another in and out of those boxes.2. Our moms are going to be upset that we stayed out all night going to parties.

DIRECT SPEECH

Direct speech quotes exactly what someone says. What a person says/said, is given within quotation marks “…”

You have to give the exact words of the person.

E.g. Sarah says, “I love strawberries!”

E.g. “I bought a new dress,” said Jane.

♦ Add a comma after the introductory verb e.g. says, or said,

♦ If the person speaking, appears at the end of the sentence, then the commamust be placed before the closing inverted comma e.g. “I need …,” said Jane.

♦ Quotation marks must be used to open and close the speech (“…”)

♦ A capital letter must begin the direct speech.

♦ A full stop, or exclamation mark or question mark must end the sentence (./!/?)

In direct speech, each new speaker must begin on a new line.

INDIRECT SPEECH

♣ Indirect speech is when you report what a person has said.

♣ Many changes occur when we convert direct speech into indirect speech.

♣ The changes are as follows: Remove the comma and add the word that. Take away all quotation marks. Change all pronouns. Check your tense. Add the word if or whether to questions. Keep present tense sentences in present tense e.g. says

E.g. Anna says, “I love the smell of roses.”

Anna says that she loves the smell of roses.

All sentences with the word said, will move one stage back in tense.

HOLES BY LOUIS SACHAR

ACTIVITY 22: READ THE INFORMATION GIVEN IN PART 1 OF YOUR ENGLISHWORK BOOK AND ANSWER THE FOLLOWING

1. What are the different stories told in Holes? How do these stories relateto one another?

2. What is the relationship of the past to the present in this book?3. What types of holes exist in the story?

Setting/Time and Place: Where in the World Are We?

“There is no lake at Camp Green Lake. There once was a very large lake here, thelargest lake in Texas. That was over a hundred years ago. Now it is just a dry, flatwasteland. “There used to be a town of Green Lake as well. The town shrivelled anddried up along with the lake, and the people who lived there.”

— Holes

You can tell that setting is important in Holes because that is where the author begins. At firstglance, this setting seems like a realistic place: somewhere in the Texas desert, in the presenttime. However, the novel constantly reminds us that appearances can be deceiving. In theworld of Holes, the reader soon discovers that the real and the imaginary coexist andsometimes even blur together.

Sachar locates Camp Green Lake in a dry lakebed in Texas, a place where no rain has fallenin more than a century. The punishing heat and uncomfortable conditions make this theperfect spot for a prison. No guard towers or fences are necessary because anyone attemptingto run away would quickly die of thirst and end up as “buzzard food,” as Mr. Sir puts it. Theonly animals that can survive here are dangerous desert creatures: scorpions, rattlesnakes, andthe deadly yellow-spotted lizards that everyone fears.

However, Green Lake wasn’t always dry, which is something else we learn in the revealingopening paragraph. The fossil fish that Stanley digs up serves as a reminder that this was oncea beautiful lake, which “sparkled like a giant emerald in the sun.” Holes contains three stories, all intersecting in one place. One of these stories tells how the lake, and the town named afterit, became a wasteland.

Stanley’s first impressions of Camp Green Lake sketch out a stark picture for the reader:“The land was barren and desolate. He could see a few rundown buildings and some tents.Farther away there was a cabin beneath two tall trees. Those two trees were the only plant lifehe could see. There weren’t even weeds.” On Stanley’s second day at the camp, “The onlything that got him out of bed was knowing that every second he wasted meant he was onestep closer to the rising of the sun. He hated the sun.”

GM 2018

READING COMPREHENSION

These descriptive details seem realistic enough, but there are also signs that Camp GreenLake is not an actual place. Pockmarked with holes, the dry lakebed reminds Stanley of thesurface of the moon, an unearthly setting. The yellow-spotted lizards we hear about do notreally exist but are inventions of the author. Big Thumb, the strange rock formation whereStanley’s great-grandfather found refuge in the desert, marks a spot where watermiraculously runs uphill. This magical spring irrigates a secret onion field, the source of atonic that supposedly can cure illness and prolong life. According to Sam, the onion man, asteady diet of onions has helped his donkey, Mary Lou. She lived to be almost fifty,“extraordinarily old for a donkey.”

The combination of realistic details and imaginary elements in the setting of this book mayremind you of a fable or a folktale. Folk tales narratives typically include both real andfanciful elements (think of the Paul Bunyan stories, for instance), and are part of the cultureof the American West.

In the stories in Holes that take place in the past, things are not what they appear to be, either. The town of Green Lake seems too good to be true—and it is. The narrator first describes itas a “heaven on earth” where the sky is “painted pale blue and pink— the same colour as thelake and the peach trees along its shore.” Like the mirage that confuses Stanley in the desert, making him believe that he sees a pool of water as he searches for Zero, the placid little townof Green Lake is a beautiful vision that disappears when we look more closely. Before long,we witness the ugliness of racism and violence that lurks beneath the surface of thecommunity.

Finally, in this book we must remember that what isn’t there is as important as what is. Ahole, after all, is a space where something is missing, and this is also true of Camp GreenLake. Read the first paragraphs of the book again and you’ll hear more about what is missingfrom this setting than what is there. The absence of water influences much of what happens toStanley at the camp. As Mr. Sir makes clear, the lack of water means that escape from CampGreen Lake is practically impossible: “Nobody runs away from here. We don’t need a fence.Know why? Because we’ve got the only water for a hundred miles.”

I usually take steps …to avoid elevators.☺

Calvin and Hobbes is a syndicated daily comic strip that was written and illustrated by American cartoonist Bill Watterson, and syndicated from November 18, 1985, to December 31, 1995. It follows the humorous antics of Calvin, a precocious andadventurous six-year-old boy, and Hobbes, his sardonic stuffed tiger. The pair are named after John Calvin, a 16th-centuryFrench Reformation theologian, and Thomas Hobbes, a 17th-century English political philosopher. Nearly 45 million copiesof the 18 Calvin and Hobbes books have been sold.

Calvin and Hobbes is set in the contemporary United States in an unspecified suburban area. The strip depicts Calvin'sflights of fantasy and his friendship with Hobbes, and also examines Calvin's relationships with family and classmates.Though the series does not mention specific political figures or current events, it does explore broad issues likeenvironmentalism, public education, and the flaws of opinion polls.
