A Message from your MinisterThe Rev. Dr. Jean Morris

Lament is an authentic dimension of Christian faith. Lament is the truthful feeling that something is not right and we call out to God. Lament is prayer.

2016 was a year of lament for Grace. We grieved the loss of two long-time ministers – The Rev. Leslie Walker who served Grace from 2002 until July of 2016, and The Rev. Victor Kim who was at Grace for 22 years. Their leaving caused us sadness and initiated significant change which has been difficult. During the year, we also endured the sorrow of tragedy for families of Grace Church, and we have said goodbye to dear ones who have died. It was a year of transition, and we have been on an unfamiliar path with unexpected turns. At times, we have been weary of the change and have lamented.

It is important to remember that Psalms of lament usually turn into praise. Lament and praise go together in communities of faith.

We had times of lament in 2016, and we also knew the transformational power of God’s presence in our midst. Suffering and hope go together for the people of God.

As a church family, we give thanks to God for the many and diverse ways that God has blessed the people and congregation of Grace during 2016. This annual report is full of transformational stories that witness to the incredible power of God at work within and beyond Grace.

We praise God for the many people who generously participate in the ministries of Grace. Thank you for your time, talent, treasure, and the prayers which you offer for the work and witness of Grace Church. We are blessed with a vibrant congregation in the heart of the city, and we know that God has placed us here to live our values of service and compassion in Jesus’ name. We give thanks to God for the gifts of the staff, in particular, our new staff members in 2016, including Interim Minister, the Rev. Dr. Allen Aicken.

A final note of praise: during 2016 Grace developed a vision for ministry that will lead the congregation into the hopeful future God has planned for you. It is a privilege to continue to serve with you, as one of your ministers, through this transition.

May we be faithful and follow where Christ leads us.

Peace, Jean

Report of the SessionCaro Smith, Clerk of Session

In 2016 we said goodbye to the Rev. Leslie Walker. Her leadership – especially in the area of justice and mission – has enriched our church. She motivated us to expand our vision, not only of who our neighbour is but also of what God can do through our congregation in being fair and just to our neighbour.

We are grateful for the exceptional leadership of the Rev. Dr. Jean Morris. She has been a stabilising force for the Session and the congregation and has helped us to embrace the opportunities presented to us. A special thank you goes out to Matthew for the sacrifices he made as Jean spent countless hours shepherding us through these transitions.

The Rev. Jan Hazlett (January to March) and the Rev. Mark Tremblay (April to present), our Presbytery Representatives, and the Rev. Dr. Allen Aicken, our Interim Minister, played instrumental roles in moving us forward. Our Presbytery Representatives provided a framework and clarity during our meetings. Dr. Aicken invited us to explore new ideas in areas we had grown comfortable. It has been a year of hard work for all our church leaders.

Grace has taken significant steps in being even better stewards of all the resources God has given us – not just financially, but also in hiring people so ministers can focus their time and energy on ministry related tasks.

The Vision Committee, under the outstanding leadership of Mary Rozsa de Coquet and Laurie Livingstone, met numerous times over the past year. We commend the committee for their hard work, their commitment and the great gains made in intentionally discerning a new ministry model and missional focus for Grace.

As we plan for 2017, we focus on the hope of our calling and the opportunity to continue learning how God has equipped us to build up the body of Christ. We commit to walk on the road God called us to travel with all humility, gentleness, love and patience.

ArchivesBob Ermter

One of Grace Church’s greatest assets is our history. The Archives at Grace are a source of information gathered from both the public and the congregation.

2016 Highlights• Photo Archive: Archiving all Grace’s

historic photos onto CD. To date, we’ve processed over 10,000 images.

• Presbyterian History: Beyond Grace’s history, we worked to collect and archive the history of Presbyterians in Alberta, including photos of some of the original Presbyterian churches in the province.

2017 Plans• Finish archiving the Grace photo collection

to CD. • Continue filling gaps in the collection.

Session and Board of Managers minutes are complete, but Annual Reports are missing between 1905 and 1910 and between 1914 and 1927. There are also gaps in the Sunday Bulletin collection.

The Ashley Project Working GroupLen Wolstenholme, Convener

We were tasked by Session to identify uses of the property at 16 Avenue and 9 Street that would simultaneously respond to community needs and address Grace’s parking needs.

2016 Highlights• Understanding Community Needs:

Connected with nine organisations that address homelessness, seniors housing, parking management, affordable and attainable housing policy and programs, and community needs.

• Maintaining Visibility: Discussions maintained our desire to ensure future development does not reduce church visibility from 16 and 17 Avenues nor block the sun from our Sanctuary’s stained glass windows.

2017 Plans• Continue our work,

guided by the new organisational vision and ministry model.

CommunicationsShirley Philips, Convener

We develop, maintain and facilitate an overall communications strategy for all aspects of the Grace congregation.

2016 Highlights• Communications Plan: Developed a

comprehensive plan to help structure and monitor communication to the congregation and the community. The plan includes a new look for the Annual Report and bulletin, improved website content, a social media strategy, monthly newsletters, as well as mechanisms for monitoring and improving the plan moving forward.

• Transition Messaging: Prepared concise and timely messaging to keep the congregation informed about the transition taking place at Grace. We made brochures and other documents for the website and distribution in the bulletin.

2017 Plans• Welcome Tyler Williams as

Communications Coordinator to work with us to implement, monitor and expand the communications plan.

• Review and update communication policies to augment and support the new communications plan.

• Develop social media training modules for staff, session and volunteers.

Congregational LifeBob Ermter, Convener (January to July)

We serve to build an authentic Christian community by getting people connected to Grace and each other.

2016 Highlights• Farewell Dinner for Rev. Victor Kim:

336 people attended, and many shared poignant messages of farewell and best wishes.

• Easter Sunday Breakfast: Served breakfast to approximately 100 people during a morning of fellowship and community.

• Farewell Celebration for Rev. Leslie Walker: Many gathered to thank Leslie for her years of ministry at Grace and to wish her well.

• Stampede Breakfast: 150 people from Grace and the nearby community enjoyed live music and a hearty breakfast of pancakes and sausages.

• Advent-ure 2016: 90 people, including families from the Sudanese and Anyuack congregations and the community, participated in Advent-themed activities.

2017 Plans• Build on the success of last year’s events

by planning similar activities and working to expand participation.

• Host a luncheon for Elders and a welcome event for newcomers.

Transformational ImpactAdvent-ure is an intergenerational and interdenominational event that brings families together to prepare for the coming of Christ. At our 2016 event, grandparents decorated cookies with youth, families created crafts to display in their homes, children sang and rang bells together, and many participants wrote prayers for people they knew, people they didn’t know, and for the world. These prayers were shared and displayed in the Sanctuary on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Conversations of unCommon GraceJim Campbell, Convener

We hold conversations on subjects that affect all of us to give us a broader understanding of these topics, both inside and outside the church.

2016 Highlights• Faith, Flora & Fauna: Over 80 people

from Grace and the community gathered to discuss what our faith tells us about caring for creation. » Participants of the panel discussion

included Christyann Olson, Executive Director of the Alberta Wilderness Association; Dr. Brenda Kenny, past President of the Canadian Energy Pipelines Association; and Rev. Ray Aldred, Director of the Indigenous Studies Program at the Vancouver School of Theology.

» Jean Morris moderated the discussion that opened our eyes to a range of perspectives on environmental protection and challenged us to view conservation as both a practical and a spiritual issue.

» Rev. Aldred left us with a poignant reminder that it is not a question of “saving the planet” but of ensuring that we sustain a viable environment for humanity.

2017 Plans• Host a conversation on Diversity – How do

we create a cohesive society in a country that, rightly, values diversity as strength?

Transformational ImpactunCommon Grace has helped open the doors of the church to the surrounding community. At each conversation members of the committee have met people who have lived nearby for years but have never ventured through the doors of Grace. Perhaps only a few have chosen to become more engaged with the church, but all have walked away with a new appreciation for the gifts Grace brings to the world and the strength and thoughtfulness found within our walls.

DiscipleshipCindy Stephenson, Convener

We fulfil the vision and mission of Grace by enabling discovery and development of a mature Christian faith through a personal relationship with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, nurtured through life-long learning, living and sharing our faith.

2016 Highlights• New Members: A membership class ran in

February. We welcomed 20 new individuals into our congregation and our community.

• Sunday School: We hired Gail Smith as Interim Sunday School Coordinator. Gail’s presence, her help organising the school, and her creativity with the Advent pageant were greatly appreciated.

• Youth Ministry: We continued our commitment to youth ministry by creating a Coordinator of Youth Ministry position: MC Rozsa de Coquet, and now Ryan Hofer have strengthened and sustained the fellowship and learning of our high school students.

• Adult Studies: Three different Bible studies and the Simple Supper, Simply Scripture series on Galatians were popular.

• Canada Youth: Three youth and four adults from Grace attended Canada Youth, a coast-to-coast Presbyterian worship and faith gathering.

2017 Plans• Conduct a workshop with Dr. Tori Smit

to explore faith formation practices to help us identify a revitalised vision for our children’s ministry.

• Continue providing age-appropriate and exciting Sunday School classes.

• Engage our high school students as they explore their “Burning Questions” of faith.

• Leverage the momentum of recent discussions by continuing to deepen our understanding of Millennials (25-35-year-olds) through research, events and conversations.

Transformational ImpactOur experiences over the past year expanded our knowledge of the ways community helps to shape and form faith. All of the Grace family benefits from being more intentionally intergenerational, and more actively connected with each other.

Ministry Resource CommitteeMary Rozsa de Coquet, Convener

We support the ministers at Grace, both as a team and as individuals. We facilitate communication between ministers and the Session, clarify roles as related to the strategic plan, ensure adequate resourcing and development opportunities, and oversee annual reviews.

2016 Highlights• Transition Support: Collaborated with the

Transition Committee in the search for an Interim Minister.

• Interim Ministry: Recruited Rev. Aicken as Interim Minister and oversaw the interim ministry including the six-month assessment.

• Balancing Ministry Needs: Monitored and redistributed minister responsibilities as required.

2017 Plans• Conclude Rev. Aicken’s role as

Interim Minister.• Contract a Guest Minister to ensure

uninterrupted stated supply through September when hopefully a lead minister is called.

• Continue to support all ministers who come to Grace, aided by our Presbytery representative, Rev. Tremblay.

MissionMarlene Doherty, Convener

We fulfil the vision and mission of Grace by sharing the love of God in mission with justice, kindness and humility throughout God’s creation.

2016 Highlights• The Power of 50,000: In partnership with

Presbyterian World Service & Development, Sunday School children learned about Malawi and what it means to be a missionary.

• Mexico Mission: The team made another trek to build a home for a family.

• Hymn Sing: The Tinnitus Bells, Chancel Choir and Anyuack Choir provided a musical experience filled with fellowship and inspiration.

• Neighbour Day: We hosted our first Community Garage Sale. The day was a delightful mix of community, sharing treasures and enjoying treats.

• Connecting with our Community: We connected with a City of Calgary community social worker, Immigrant Services Calgary and a community leader, to help us get to know and engage with our community.

• English Language Learners: The classes are full thanks to the positive environment and welcoming teachers who provide a much-appreciated learning opportunity. Special thanks to Julie Clayton, Coordinator, for her outstanding work.

• Grace Gardens: Implemented a large rainwater collection barrel to use for watering plants. We also upgraded hoses, composted all garden beds, and developed a plan for planting.

• Ending Programs: Grace’s role with two long-standing ministries – Inn from the Cold and The Mustard Seed – came to an end. Thank you to those who volunteered over the years!

2017 Plans• Research options to engage the

congregation and community to meet the needs of our neighbours.

• Divide and replant our existing plants to help unify the landscape around Grace. The focus will be on companion planting to attract beneficial insects. Mulching will consist of low groundcover plants to minimise watering and weeding.

Transformational ImpactA vendor at our community garage sale shared a note saying, “thanks for holding the Neighbour Day Sale – your church are such great neighbours. I made a few dollars but more importantly felt such a friendly and peaceful atmosphere there for which I am so grateful. My son is delivering what we didn’t sell to Women in Need. Hope you are going to have the sale again next year!”

Pastoral CareLyndon Nordean and Harle Burnett, Conveners

We fulfil the vision of Grace Church through intentional pastoral care to all members and adherents, by elders and trained lay people, and through effective community partnerships.

2016 Highlights• The Connectors Program: A new initiative

in 2016 to increase awareness of newcomers and welcome them each Sunday.

• Walk to Bethlehem: Over 100 people participated in this Advent meditation.

• Chinook Care Centre Hymn Sing: Held monthly.

• GraceFull Seniors: Dr. Kamil Botros guided us on our visit to the St. Mina Coptic Orthodox Church at Balzac. Historian Peter Penner shared “A Century of Grace.” Major Kenneth MacRae, Presbyterian minister and military chaplain, spoke about his experiences. A guest speaker presented on ordaining women as teaching and ruling elders 50 years ago.

• Food Availability Project: A new initiative is making food available to individuals and families in crisis.

• Parish Nurse: Available every Sunday after the service to discuss health concerns.

• Pastoral Visiting: Ministers and Greta Bylsma, Pastoral Assistant, made 768 visits in 2016 to welcome new members, provide pastoral care, spend time with those in the hospital, and offer Communion at home.

2017 Plans• Continue the Connectors Program.• Maintain the Food Availability Project.• Encourage the faith journey of older adults

within Grace and the community.• Support the congregation to recognise the

connection between faith and health.

Transformational ImpactGrace members cheerfully greeted new faces one Sunday morning and the conversation that followed led to a meaningful friendship. Over the following months, they shared time and meals together and spoke into each other’s lives. And when the young couple stood at the front of the sanctuary to have their baby baptised, their friends stood beside them.

This encounter reminds us that small gifts of welcome and friendship can transform the lives of those around us, and shape our lives in the process.

• Preaching Workshop: Dr. Long taught a workshop titled, “Preaching in a Whirlwind: the craft of preaching and engaging Scripture in preaching,” to 50 participants.

• Guest Sermon: Dr. Long preached at worship on Sunday morning to nearly 300 people.

2017 Plans• Host Preaching Grace 2017 on May 12-14 –

Transformational ImpactWe received a very heartfelt thank you from a couple in Fort McMurray. After experiencing a series of losses, culminating in the destruction of their home in the May 2016 fire, the couple received one of our quilts. The couple said receiving the quilt gave them hope and comfort during a difficult time, and was one of the nicest gifts they had received.

VisionLaurie Livingstone & Mary Rozsa de Coquet, Conveners

We ensure the effectiveness and relevance of current ministries and programs given the Grace Vision and Mission statements and act as a catalyst for new vision initiatives for the congregation.

2016 Highlights• Leadership Retreat: A successful retreat in

January helped set the goals for the year.• Congregational Survey: Well-attended

engagement sessions and surveys showed strong support from the congregation for the direction the committee was moving.

• Vision and Ministry Model: Completed a renewed vision and ministry model for Grace.

2017 Plans• Host information sessions and a

congregational meeting to approve the vision and ministry model in January.

• Review of organisational and committee structures to align with the renewed vision.

• Create strategies to support committees and the congregation to begin living the renewed vision.

• Continue to communicate and engage the congregation in the work of the Vision Committee.

Transformational ImpactThe idea of change can be scary. 2016 began with uncertainty and was not a comfortable time. As we moved through 2016, the congregation beautifully embraced the wonder and possibility that a time of transition and renewal can bring. Every time the Vision Committee reached out to the congregation, the response was incredible. As we closed 2016 and opened 2017, there was a palpable energy in the congregation. There is excitement about our future and commitment to be an active part of it. The Spirit is alive in the people of Grace, and we can’t wait to see what fruit the Spirit will bear in 2017.

Coordinator of VolunteersCindy Stephenson, Coordinator

Our Grace community was blessed with tens of thousands of hours of volunteer time and talent in 2016. Through the faithfulness of our volunteers, we:

» welcomed newcomers, » offered hospitality and served coffee, » taught English conversation skills, » helped the faith formation of our youth, » provided music leadership, » visited our congregants, » made beautiful quilts, » counted offering, » supported our Grace family through loss and joy, » provided a safe environment, » oversaw our finances and properties, » prayed for our community, » supported missions across our city, country

and world, » read scripture, » nurtured beautiful gardens, » cared for health concerns, » found inspiring literature for our library, » envisioned where God was calling Grace, and » served in countless other ways.

So much of what was achieved at Grace and is described elsewhere in this report was because of the hundreds of volunteers who actively lived out their faith.

It continues to be a delight and honour to spend time with you and to understand better your gifts and interests in serving.

Thank you, and God bless you!

• Canadian Accounting Standards: Updated our presentation of financial information to adhere to the standards for not-for-profit organisations in Canada.

• Hiring Support: Supported the hiring of Ava Morasch, Operations Director/Accountant, and Tyler Williams Communications Coordinator. We also developed position descriptions to reflect the roles and responsibilities of all staff within the revised organisation chart.

2017 Plans• Update the Human Resources section of

the Policy Manual.• Continue modernising the chart

of accounts in preparation for the independent review of the 2017 financial statements.

• Replace Grace House windows to comply with Calgary guidelines.

• Develop policies and procedures to see that annual budgets are prepared according to established guidelines and in a timely manner.

We enter 2017 trusting that the revised staffing model will relieve the ministers of administrative tasks more appropriately assigned to the Operations Director, Ava Morasch, and the Communications Coordinator, Tyler Williams. We are grateful for the continued financial support for the work and ministry of Grace Presbyterian Church.
