PALM /PASSION SUNDAY

April 14th

- 9:00 & 11:00 AM

Palm Sunday or Passion Sunday be-

gins our Holy week worship. It is a

twofold celebration. Jesus triumphant-

ly enters Jerusalem…there are shouts

of Hosanna! Children waving palm

branches and our savior makes his

way to Jerusalem. But we quickly

learn that this celebration is short lived.

This marks the beginning of Jesus’

passion. What exactly is Jesus’ pas-

We wave palms in joyful celebration,

this triumph is not what we thought it

was going to be. Worship on Palm

sounds of children singing hosanna,

our salvation.

MAUNDY THURSDAY COMMUNION

April 18th

The name “Maundy Thursday is de-

rived from the old French word mande’

which comes from the Latin

“mandatum novum” meaning “a new

Commandment.” (John 13:34) After

Jesus washes the disciples’ feet, and

Judas leaves to betray him, he gives

his disciples a new commandment that

we should love one another even as

night, we remember Jesus’ last supper

the same way, Jesus has become our

we are saved. We will celebrate

Maundy Thursday with holy commun-

ion.

GOOD FRIDAY TENEBRAE

April 19th

- 7:30 PM

On Good Friday, we will worship with

a Tenebrae service. Tenebrae literally

translated from the Latin means

“shadows” or “Darkness.” Through a

series of reading from the Passion ac-

counts in the Gospel of John, the ser-

vice begins with the Light of Joy, a re-

counting of Jesus’ triumphal entry into

Jerusalem. Then the readings explore

the Darkness of betrayal, abandon-

ment, and leading to the death of Je-

sus on the cross. At the conclusion of

each element, a candle is extinguished

leading to darkness. The service con-

cludes with the Light of life, a light of

hope as we look toward the resurrec-

tion of Jesus. The Tenebrae allows us

to walk with Jesus through his final

hours.

L ENTEN B I B LE STUDY

MONDAY NIGHT LENTEN STUDY 6:30 PM -7:30 PM FELLOWSHIP HALL - APRIL 1, 8, 15

We are using "Will You Come and Follow Me? An Adult Lenten Study on Hymns," Writ-

ten by Mary Louise (Mel) Bringle and Beverly Howard. This six-session adult study pack

looks at the text of various Lenten hymns. The following hymns are examined, one in

each session: "Lord, Who throughout These Forty Days," "Will You Come and Follow

Me (The Summons)," "I Danced in the Morning (Lord of the Dance)," "To God Be the

Glory," "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," and "All Glory, Laud, and Honor." Each

session will challenge adults to work through the meaning of the text and learn more

about the hymn writers. They will also discover how the text relates to them today.

Please note there will be no study on March 11th due to spring break.

As we spring forward, we see changes all around us.

Changes happen in Presbyterian Women as well, and

one of those changes is going to be in how PW funds are

managed. As voted on by the board, we will no longer

have our own checking account. Instead we will be a

designated fund under the church’s account, similar to

LOGOS. The PW Board will still be in control of this fund,

but all deposits and disbursements will be handled

through the church account.

What does this mean for you? The only real change will

be in how checks are made out. All checks will need to

be made out to GPC with the particular designation being

noted on the memo line: backpack buddies, PW lunch-

eon, PW Bible study books, PW donations, and etc.

Cash is still welcomed as well and will be deposited ac-

cordingly. Our only source of income for operating ex-

penses and benevolent giving will still come from every-

one’s generous giving. This is simply a management

change for simplification.
