The 2014 Philadelphia Regional Future City Competition

was a great success thanks to the students, program

supporters and volunteers. This year 44 schools

registered in the competition, involving over 500

students. The Greater Philadelphia Association of

Energy Engineers funded the Best Energy Based Project,

awarded to St Maximilian Kolbe School, in West

Chester, PA (pictured right). The schools demonstrated

how they would apply engineering concepts to create the

buildings of the future. A special thank you to GPAEE

member Bob Iodice who served as energy judge, and all

other members who were able to participate.

PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE

ATTENTION GPAEE MEMBERS

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS ARE NOW BEING ACCEPTED

The Foundation of the Association of Energy Engineers Scholarship Fund promotes continuing educa-

tion of qualified professionals in energy engineering and energy management. The Foundation receives

funding from voluntary Chapter and personal contributions. This year, the Greater Philadelphia Chapter

will donate two $1,000 scholarships to local students who apply for the award. The association works

with the Foundation to facilitate the application process. The application period opens January 1st. All

applications must be received by the local chapter Scholarship Chair, Randy Haines, by April 1. Applica-

tions are then reviewed and final recommendations are submitted to the Scholarship Director at national

by May 1st. Award winners are notified by the Foundation over the summer.

For more information on eligibility and how to apply for the 2014 scholarship opportunities, as well as a

full listing of the 2013award winners, please visit: http://aeefoundation.org/scholarships/2012-faee-

scholars/.

Our chapter mission includes fostering action through education and networking to promote the priorities of energy professionals. This year our chapter is making it a priority to extend our valuable chapter resources to the energy professionals of the future. Our plans will take a variety of paths. Student Involvement in Meetings We would like to encourage more youth involvement at our meetings, but we need your help. We already offer a discounted student meeting fee for most meetings. Help us spread the word to high school and col-lege students about our programming. Encourage your kids to seek permission to attend a meeting of inter-est. They can enjoy learning about science without the threat of taking a test at the end. Commit today to bring a budding energy engineer to a particular meeting. Co-Ops, Internships and Mentoring Opportunities If your company has an internship or co-op program, let us know about it. We will promote opportunities on our website and in our newsletter. Scholarships Help us identify worthy recipients for scholarships. Each year, GPAEE sponsors two $1,000 scholarships awarded to eligible, local, college engineering students through the national Foundation of the Association of Energy Engineers. A member’s endorsement makes a huge difference. Our board will continue to support projects such as the Future Cities Competition, local STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) academy programs and AEE International student initiatives. We welcome participation from the membership, your ideas on ways to enhance youth involvement and educa-tion are highly encouraged. To share suggestions, please contact Maryanne Campbell at (215) 684-6724 or via email at: [email protected].

PECO SMART IDEAS FOR BUSINESS PROGRAMS

The PECO Smart Equipment Incentives and PECO Smart Construction programs re-launched with new incentives and benefits. Businesses, government agencies, non-profits and institutions are all eligible for incentives to help offset the capital cost of energy-efficient design, improvements and equipment upgrades that provide immediate energy sav-ings and space enhancements. There are a wide variety of incentives available. You must submit a pre-application before your project begins to reserve the incentives.

Lighting: PECO incentives are available for energy-efficient upgrades to indoor, outdoor and garage lighting systems, and for the addition of lighting controls. Incentives cover CFL and linear fluorescent lighting, metal halides, induction, LED general lighting, LED exit signs and lighting controls.

HVAC: PECO incentives are available for upgrades to HVAC systems, which not only can save energy but also can improve air quality and working conditions. This includes incentives for high-efficiency air conditioners, heat pumps, packaged terminal units, hotel occupancy sensors and energy management systems. Chillers incentives are provided under the custom category shown below.

Variable Speed/Frequency Drives: These drives optimize the speed and frequency at which motors operate and can provide significant energy savings. PECO incentives are available for drives installed on HVAC fans, chilled water pumps, heat pump water heaters, kitchen exhaust fans, process motors and screw air compressors.

Refrigeration and Food Service Integral to many establishments from warehouses and supermarkets to restaurants, PECO provides incentives for a wide range of refrigeration and food service measures.

Custom Measures PECO can provide incentives for equipment and energy-efficiency upgrades designed specifically for your business. Contact us to see if your energy-efficiency solutions qualify. For more information, call 1-888-5-PECO-SAVE (1-888-573-2672) or visit www.peco.com/SmartIdeas.

Did Pennsylvania Just Change The Way States Talk To Businesses About Energy?

Investors and business people should read the 73-page Pennsylvania Energy Plan just released by my former boss, Governor Tom Corbett. OK, you’re probably not chomping at the bit to read gu-bernatorial vision statements. But this one’s different. Mind you, it creates no special tax loopholes for energy users nor does it create new regulations. Like any state energy plan, the Pennsylvania plan broadly explains the governor’s vision and policy. But Corbett has gone further, compiling all of the factors that make the Keystone State so promising for energy companies.(more)

Downingtown STEM Academy Tops List of Best High Schools In Pennsylvania

The Downingtown Area School District’s newest high school, the Downingtown STEM Academy, has received the highest score in Pennsylvania’s new School Performance Profile. The STEM Acad-emy received a score of 101.4, topping the list of every public, charter, cyber charter and technical high school in Pennsylvania. (more)

Energy Department Offers $50 Million to Advance Fuel Efficient Autos

The Energy Department on January 22 announced nearly $50 million to accelerate research and de-velopment of new vehicle technologies that give drivers and businesses more transportation options and protect the environment in communities nationwide. This new funding includes support for the Energy Department’s EV Everywhere Grand Challenge, a broader initiative launched in March 2012 to make plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) as affordable and convenient to own and drive as to-day’s gasoline-powered vehicles within the next 10 years. Internet and Cable Giant Comcast Will Soon Sell Electricity in Pennsylvania

Comcast’s Triple Play package bundles television, internet and phone. With the company’s plans to sell electricity, it could soon become a quadruple play in some markets.

Nearly three years ago, Greentech Media reported on a small cooperative utility in the suburbs of Indianapolis that was merging with the local telecom to offer electricity, phone, broadband and home security services through one company now called NineStar Connect. (more)

Pennsylvania Convention Center Signs Renewable Energy Agreement with NRG Business Solutions

The Pennsylvania Convention Center announced today that NRG Business Solutions, a part of NRG Energy, Inc. (NYSE:NRG), will be powering its facilities with a portion of renewable energy beginning next year. The Convention Center chose renewable energy as part of its ongoing commit-ment to sustainability. "We are pleased to have been able to reduce our energy costs as much as possible, while also doing the right thing for the environment," said Gregory J. Fox, Chairman of the Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority (PCCA). "This agreement with NRG Business Solu-tions and Pro-Tech Energy Solutions has allowed us to secure an affordable power price for our facility using renewable energy." (more)
