PPL Customers Get a Third Option

Competition in PPL's residential electric market, where rates are scheduled to climb 30 percent on Jan. 1, is starting to heat up. An Ohio company announced plans Monday to sell electricity to residential cus-tomers in the PPL service area, which includes most of the Lehigh Valley, giving them another choice to shop around. (more) Smart Grid Making Jobs

The nation's power companies are investing millions of dollars in new "smart" technologies and creating a mini-boom in hiring. Scores of those jobs are being created in the Triangle, considered a hub for emerging energy jobs in manufac-turing, engineering and project management. Three of the nation's leading utility meter companies have offices in Raleigh and have hired or plan to hire several hundred workers. The state's two biggest elec-tric utilities - Progress Energy and Duke Energy - were recently awarded maxi-mum grants from federal stimulus funds earmarked for power system upgrades.(more)

Company Breaks Ground on New “Flywheel” Energy Storage Plant

Beacon Power Corp. broke ground today on a 20-megawatt, energy-storage facil-ity in southeastern New York. The Rensselaer County project, slated for completion in 2011, would be the first in the nation to use a "flywheel" frequency regulation system to balance electric-ity supply and demand, according to the Tyngsboro, Mass.-based company. The $69 million facility would store electricity as kinetic energy in a matrix of massive discs when grid supply outstrips demand.(more)

Natural Gas Glut Overwhelms Speculators, Defies Rally

When Qatar’s biggest natural gas shipment to the U.S. arrived this month, it sig-naled to Barclays Capital Inc. and PFC Energy that this year’s worst performing commodity investment won’t recover in 2010.

Murwab, a Qatari liquefied natural gas tanker, carried the first shipment to the U.S. from the Persian Gulf nation since June 2008. Its cargo, enough to heat about 9 million homes for a day, added to the largest gas inventories for this time of year since at least 1994, Energy Department data show. (more)

For 18 years the National Engineers Week Future City™ Competition has been chal-lenging seventh and eighth graders nationwide to create the cities of tomorrow while encouraging their interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math through hands-on applications. The 2009-2010 Future City competition continues this tradition by challenging students to address the real world issue of affordable and green housing.

Designing affordable housing for those most in need is enormously complicated. But doing it while adhering to LEED recognized green building standards, with an emphasis on energy efficiency and a low carbon footprint…now that’s a challenge.

Future City is looking for engineers who are interested in serving as mentors. The following schools are in need of mentors:

Cinnaminson Middle School Cinnaminson, NJ Holy Angels School Newark, DE Our Lady of Calvary School Philadelphia, PA (Northeast) Postlethwait Middle School Camden, DE St. Maximilian Kolbe Scool West Chester, PA

Competition, visit www.futurecityphilly.org
