GPA Research Project Updates – Mr. Workmon

• Project 032 Published as RR 200 • Project 074 Reviewing Proposals • Project 063 Published as RR’s 196 & 199 • Project 081 assigned to Bryan Research & Engineering • Research committee planning to ballot two new research projects for 2010

GPA 2172/181 – Final Status Update – Mr. Sextro

Published in January 2172-09, a small correction is needed on a calculation description Although the calculation is correct. Example spread sheet has been given to Mr. Wheat, GPA Staff, for posting to GPA’s website

GPA 2145-09 – Final Status Update – Mr. Workmon GPA 2145-09 update complete and available through GPA. Committee suggests keeping TP-17 and GPA 2145 updated on same schedule to prevent differences in property values. Mr. Wheat will confer with NIST on this issue. The data book is going to be sychronized with the new 2145.

BLM Updates API 14.1 has been request by BLM and MMS to revise that standard. This will affect GPA 2166 as it has approved the use of perforated plates for flow conditioning.

GPA 8182-03 – Standard for Mass Measurement of Natural Gas Liquids

- Review update – Mr. Sextro and Mr. Kosewicz Proposed changes will be sent out in draft form for review by the committee followed by a

ballot of the committee.

GPA 8186-86 – Measurement of Liquid Hydrocarbon by Truck Scales – Mr. Beaty Mr. Beaty and Mr. Estrada will draft proposed revisions with help from Enterprise. Draft will

be sent to committee for review followed by ballot.

GPA 8173-94 – Method For Converting Mass of NGL’s and Vapors to Equivalent Liquid Volumes - Mr. Workmon

The standard has very minor changes in wording that need to be made. Mr. Workmon will supply Mr. Wheat with changes. The standard will likely be reaffirmed with no technical changes.

GPA 8195-95 - Tentative Standard for Converting Net Vapor Space Volumes to Equivalent Liquid Volumes – Mr. Sextro

A new spreadsheet has been developed for an example page with minor editorial changes. The document does not exist in an electronic format and will need to be converted. Mr. Wheat will use OCR to convert text of document to electronic format.

GPA 2145 Common Pressure Bases Spreadsheet Status – Mr. Harless Spreadsheets have been completed and sent to Mr. Wheat for publication to GPA website. GPA Staff Note: Mr. Wheat is currently working to create a Technical Section Webpage where such documents may be published. Until then, documents such as these may be obtained through Mr. Wheat.

Report of Petex Activities - Mr.Kosewicz

Petex’s last two NGL schools were very well attended as well as their last gas measurement school. Their next NGL school will be held the week of March 16th. Petex has incorporated GPA

2145-09 and plans to incorporate GPA 2172-09 in their school instruction. They are currently looking at opening the Midland/Odessa school.

Review of API Activities - Mr. Sextro GPA 2172 Heating Value, Compressibility, Relative Density and Liquid Content Co-published with API as MPMS Chapter14.5 in January 2009. The example spreadsheet publishing method has not yet been established. Example calculations B3, B4 and B9 for water saturated gas (at 14.696, 14.65 and the SI example) have labels missing the w from the xi term in three columns, xiw*Hvi,id, *Gi,id and *bi. GPA 8182-03 Standard for Mass Measurement of NGLs (API MPMS 14.7) A preliminary review identified several changes including synchronizing the density range in the scope with that in TP-27, adding varying mixture composition to the discussion of where mass measurement is important, an explanation of how the density meter factor is commonly applied in a flow computer, the addition of preferred installation location for density meters, relocation of several paragraphs concerning density determined from equations of state, deleting the paragraph regarding sampling utilizing immiscible fluid outage, and other editorial changes. The definitions need to be compared to API Chapter 1 and to the continuous density standard that is under development. Being considered is adding a statement to the Coriolis meters configured for volume measurement to address proving the density meter. GPA 8195-95 Tentative Standard for Converting Net Vapor Space Volumes to Equivalent Liquid Volumes The first sentence should be modified to state that it is an example and is not the standard. The spreadsheet of example calculations has been developed for the calculation example. References to the source need to be added for all variables, including the accentric factor. The document text, the graphs and forms at the end of the standard still remain to be converted to an electronic format. API Standards Update The spring 2009 meeting will be held in Dallas the week of March 23. Work of interest to Section H: API MPMS 12, Dynamic Calculations: Discussion in progress regarding proving calculations including rounding rules. API MPMS 14.1, Natural Gas Sampling: At the fall meeting, the group discussed reopening the document to change recommendations to requirements in response to a BLM request. API MPMS 14.2 / AGA8, Compressibility Factors of Natural Gas: API MPMS 14.3, Orifice Measurement

Part 1: The initial ballot for the changes to the expansion (Y) factor equation resulted in numerous comments and three negative votes, which have been resolved. A technical change has been made to the linear coefficient of thermal expansion table, and Part 1 will be balloted again. Part 2 will be the last section to be revised, and will incorporate the additional installation effects learned from recent research work. Consideration will be given to moving the performance language to Ch 22. Part 3 work flows out of the Part 1 revision. Ballot will follow incorporating the latest Part 1 changes, an updated example and the editorial corrections from proofreading into the new electronic version. Part 4 work flows out of the Part 1 revision. Currently organizing the working group and waiting on an electronic version of the document. API MPMS 14.5, Calculation of Heating Value … (GPA 2172): Published January 2009. API MPMS 14.6, Continuous Density Measurement – will become Chapter 9.4: Work continues with the help of a content specialist. Initial work is for liquid density, but will include LNG and natural gas in the future. API MPMS 14.4, Converting Mass of NGLs and Vapor to Equivalent Liquid Volumes (GPA 8173). API MPMS 14.7, Mass Measurement of NGLs (GPA 8182). API MPMS 14.8, LPG Measurement. API MPMS 14.9, Measurement of Natural Gas by Coriolis Meter: AGA-11, the AGA TMC working group is working on revisions to the document. API MPMS 14.10, Flare Measurement: Published. API MPMS 17.10, Measurement of Refrigerated and Pressurized Cargoes on Marine Tank Vessels: Part 1 – LNG: ISO TC28 SC5 is working to develop this standard with an expectation of a DIS to be released in 2009. Part 2 – LPG and Chemical Gases: Published. API MPMS 20.1, Allocation Measurement: Now resides in the new CPMA (Committee on Production Measurement and Allocation). There are six working groups, Part 1 is the introduction and is chaired by Roy Meyer. The part 1 group is the coordinating group. The existing standard will be split among all six parts. Part 2 is for single-phase devices applied in production measurement and allocation. Part 3 is multi-phase metering including wet gas. Part 4 is phase behavior application in production measurement and allocation, including commingled systems. Working in conjunction with ISO. Part 5 is rate determination, including well tests. Part 6 regards allocation processes, working in conjunction with EI who is the lead. API MPMS 21.1, Electronic Gas Measurement: Received about 600 comments on the working group ballot and discussed the AGA comments at the AGA meeting in February.

Review of ASTM Activities – Mr. Van Orsdol

Currently developing a statement for D-2165 that cylinders in the lab should always be grounded. This statement could possibly be included in other ASTM standards.

ASTM D02-0H currently has two round robins in progress.

Other Business

Mr. Sextro was presented the GPA volunteer of the year award by GPA President Mr. Dunn.

Mr. Workmon will be stepping down as section chair after this meeting. David Courtney of ConocoPhillips will become the chairman and Dean Graves of Devon Energy will be assuming the Vice-Chairman’s role.
