BHM School Board
District Information
Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose Schools is committed to a policy of equal opportunity for all students and employees without discrimination as to gender, race, creed, religion, color, national origin, sexual orientation, age, marital status or disability. This commitment is expressed in the school board-approved equal opportunity policy and the state and federal laws enacted to provide equal opportunity and eliminate discrimination in the following areas:
Education Practices:1. Access to course offerings2. Curricular materials3. Counseling practices4. Co-curricular activities5. Athletics6. Use of school facilities
Employment Practices:1. Employment criteria 2. Hiring and terminating3. Job classification and structure4. Advertising5. Pre-employment inquiries
Inquiries regarding policy may be directed to: Evan Ronken, Human Resources Director—763-682-8713.
Criminal History Background ChecksBuffalo-Hanover-Montrose Schools (BHM) is required to conduct a criminal history background check on all individuals who are offered employment in the district and on all individuals who provide athletic coaching or other extracurricular services, regardless of whether they receive compensation from the district.
District practice also requires all volunteers (with the exception of BHM student volunteers) to have a criminal history
background check. Volunteers are responsible to cover the fee.
New StudentsWe ask that new students register at the school they will attend. Par-ents should contact the school office and make ar-rangements for registration.
School telephone numbers are listed above along with attendance hotlines. Parents should use the attendance hotlines to let the school know if their child will be missing school that day. If an attendance hotline is not listed, use the school phone number.

School closings due to severe weather or other emergency reasons will be announced to families through the district’s phone/email messaging system, on the district website at bhmschools.org and Facebook pages, KRWC (1360 AM) and WCCO (830 AM) radio, and WCCO 4, KSTP 5, KMSP 9 and KARE 11 television stations.
Generally, school will be in session if it is felt that the buses can make their routes safely. When weather conditions are questionable, the district’s contracted bus company and the district’s administration do considerable checking of road conditions.
Since the school district is very large, with different types of terrain, it is impossible to determine conditions in every sector on a given day. Based on the information from the bus company, the district’s administration decides to either close schools or keep them open. Even if school is in session, parents are asked to assess their particular situation and determine whether or not it is safe for their child(ren) to attend school on a particular day.
This calendar was prepared by Laura (Barta) Lindquist, Communications Coordinator. The 2019-20 calendar was printed with the most recent information available at the time of printing. Times and dates for events occasion-ally need to be rescheduled. Residents should refer to the district Insider newsletter, the website at bhmschools.org and the district Facebook page for a listing of changes to school-related calendar events.
Calendars are mailed to all district residents. If you have questions or comments about the calendar, or need extra copies, contact Laura at 763-682-8783 or [email protected].

2019-20 Calendar Information
Student Immunization LawAccording to the State Immuni-zation Law, all students must have their immunization status up-to-date prior to attending school. This requirement ismet through one of the following:

(listing specific immunizations) • Medical exemption on file (signed by healthcare provider)
This applies to all students enrolled in any of the district’s schools as well as preschool or Early Childhood Special Education. If receiving vaccinations, students entering kindergarten must show evidence of having:
• Five (5) Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis • Four (4) Polio • Three (3) Hepatitis B (HBV) • Two (2) MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) • Two (2) Varicella (Chicken Pox)–or medical verification of disease history

Over 40 Buildings and Grounds staff members take care of 10 school facilities that cover just over one million square feet. Crews work year-round to make sure the grounds are clear of snow and ice, the lawns are trimmed and shaped, classrooms and hallways are clean and repairs are attended to regularly. The pride they take in the schools is reflected in the top con-dition of the buildings.
The community also takes pride in BHM Schools. They showed their pride by passing a $33 million referendum in 2014. As a result of the bond, Discovery, Hanover and Tatanka joined the other three el-ementary schools in having a secure entrance.
Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose Schools provide Special Education and related services to students found to be eligible. If you suspect your child has a disability which affects their access to a free and appropriate education, contact your school psychologist or the Spe-cial Education Department at 763-682-8715.
Annual Notice Regarding Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973Section 504 is an Act prohibiting discrimi-nation against anyone with a disability in any program receiving federal financial assistance. The Act defines a person with a disability as anyone who:
1. has a physical disability or mental impair-ment which substantially limits one or more major life activities.
2. has a record of such an impairment.3. is regarded as having such an impairment.
In order to fulfill its obligation under Sec-tion 504, the Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose School District has a policy that states that no discrimination against any person with a disability will knowingly be permitted in any of the programs and practices of the school system.
The district has specific responsibilities under the Act, which include the responsibil-ity to identify, evaluate and, if the child is determined to be eligible under Section 504, afford access to educational services.
Other bond projects included facility improve-ments, deferred maintenance projects, and upgrades to activity venues, technology and
safety and security.
Aside from the bond, the district devoted funds towards further entrance security. Video and door buzzer systems were installed in the main entrance of all schools. Buildings are now locked during school hours and visitors must be buzzed in before entering the school.
All guests are required to sign-in and wear a badge in
order for students and staff to easily identify visitors.

and Grounds department, call 763-682-8773.
