FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

A BALANCED PERSPECTIVESometimes it appears that we live in a society that wants us to fail. Rather than looking for good news, it seems that journalists, reporters and programmers for news shows cannot wait to f ind the story of somebody?s crime, transgression or failure. A review of TV and radio shows, newspapers, magazines and all manner of information disseminated through social media indicates that bad news and failure sells. Good news and success do not.

The Gospel provides a much needed balance when it comes to successes and failures. Jesus tells a parable about seed that falls on soil with many dif ferent growing conditions, some good, some not. The soil that is shallow, rocky and full of weeds does not produce a good crop. The soil with the right depth, consistency and composition produces good fruit (Matthew 13:1-23). The soil is not all bad or all good. It is a combination of both.

In our lives and our world, yes, there is plenty of wrongdoing and failure. Like the good soil that produces good fruit, much good is also done and there are many successes. Sometimes we focus so much on the failures that we fail to see the successes. The parable of the seed reminds us of the importance of naming things for what they are. We need to identify the sins and failures so we can do something about them. We need to acknowledge the blessings and successes so we can say thank you and stay motivated to keep trying to do good in the world.

An unbalanced perspective on the way things are is dangerous. This is especially true in the midst of the pandemic and the social challenges that we face. If all we do is look for what is not right and what went wrong, we will become cynical and even more unbalanced. If we only name what is going well and has been successful, we can become arrogant, deeming that we are so great, or complacent, thinking there is no need for improvement. In our lives and world, the depth of our concern always needs improvement. The stubborn rocks of prejudice, greed and violence need to be tossed out. The weeds of self-aggrandizement, partisanship, shame and blame need to be pulled. A world made new is all about the balance.

THE FRIDAY 6:30 PM MASS IN SPANISH will temporarily move to 7:00 p.m. beginning on Friday, July 17, 2020, to allow enough time for the cathedral to be cleaned.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR FINANCIAL SUPPORT OF CHRIST CATHEDRAL Your donations are crit ical in supporting our ministry and outreach to the community. For those who wish to drop off their offering, we have collection boxes in parking lot 6 just outside the back doors of the Arboretum and parking lot 3 at the beginning of the ADA compliant parking stalls. Donations can also be mailed to the cathedral, made online or dropped off at the parish off ice Monday ? Saturday from 9:00 am ? 2:00 pm.

PUBLIC CELEBRATION OF MASS AT CHRIST CATHEDRALThe resumption of our regular Mass schedule began the weekend of June 13/14. Thank you to everyone who has helped make this possible. Bishop Vann continues to extend a dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass on Sunday and Holy Days of Obligation until such time as it is deemed safe to have large gatherings again. We will continue to livestream the 9:45 am, 11:30 am and 1:15 pm Masses. For more detailed information and the most current updates, please visit the parish website: ChristCathedralCalifornia.org.

RESUMPTION OF REGULAR HOURS FOR CONFESSIONWe are pleased to announce that regular hours for confession will begin on Friday, June 26, 2020, 7:15 pm - 8:15 pm and at that same time on all Fridays in the future. Confessions will also be heard on Saturdays, 8:30 am - 9:30 am. Location of confessions will be outside the main entrance of the cathedral (south side). A priest will be on the plaza east of the main entrance and on the plaza west of the main entrance. We will continue with this schedule and these locations until further notice.

RECRUITING MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALSAre you a licensed mental health professional? Join the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange Mental Health Referral Network. The Off ice of Pastoral Care is looking for additional local clinicians who would like to support Catholic families and individuals seeking mental health care that aligns with and respects our Catholic beliefs and values. We are especially in need of therapists who can provide services in Spanish or Vietnamese. NOTICIAS CATÓLICAS / ANUNCIOSLA MISA DEL VIERNES A LAS 6:30P.M. EN ESPAÑOL se reubicará temporalmente a las 7:00 p.m. comenzando el viernes 17 de julio,para dar tiempo suficiente para que la catedral se limpie.

CELEBRACIÓN PÚBLICA DE MISAS EN LA CATEDRAL DE CRISTOLa reanudación de nuestro horario regular de Misa comenzó el f in de semana de junio 13 y 14. Gracias a todos los que ayudaron en hacer esto posible. El Señor Obispo Vann sigue extendiendo una dispensa de la obligación de asistir a Misa los domingos y días santos de obligación hasta el momento en que se considere seguro poder tener grandes reuniones. Continuaremos con las Misas en vivo a las 9:45 am, 11:30 am y 1:15 pm. Recuerde que la participación en la Misa dentro de la catedral se limita a las primeras 100 personas que llegan. Las máscaras deben ser usadas por todos. Continuaremos transmitiendo nuestras Misas de f in de semana a la plaza de la catedral. REANUDACIÓN DE HORARIOS REGULARES PARA CONFESIÓNNos complace anunciar que el horario regular de confesión comenzará el viernes 26 de junio de 2020, de 7:15 pm a 8:15 pm y a la misma hora todos los viernes en el futuro. Las confesiones también se escucharán los sábados, de 8:30 am - 9:30 am. La ubicación de las confesiones será afuera de la entrada principal de la catedral (lado sur). Un sacerdote estará en la plaza al este de la entrada principal y en la plaza al oeste de la entrada principal. Continuaremos con este horario y estos lugares hasta nuevo aviso.
