GET WELL SOON TOMI would like to kick off by wishingTom Weston a full and speedyrecovery after he punctured both ofhis lungs in a nasty fall in the KimMuir Chase at Cheltenham onThursday.

We were treated to a truly memorableweek of racing at Prestbury Park lastweek but incidents like this put intoperspective how dangerous the sportwe love can be, and how brave thesejockeys are, and I’m sure you will joinme in sending best wishes to Tom.

It was also a sad week for Mark Wallafter Theatre Queen suffered a fatalfall in the four-miler on Tuesday. Theloss of such a talented mare, whoclearly had huge amounts of ability, isgoing to be a hard one to take, but theweek did end on a much higher notefor Mark as he rode a treble at theNew Forest meeting at Larkhill onSaturday.

Wins on Keen Eye (Open Maiden),Perfectly Willing (Mixed Open) andDandan (Restricted) ensured Mark

dominated the headlines on the seven-race card.

There were also no less than ninejockeys who recorded doubles over theweekend, including John Mathias, whofollowed on from riding four winnersthe previous weekend with a brace atHowick’s Curre & Llangibby meeting.

Elsewhere, Andrew Braithwaite (EastEssex at Marks Tey), Katy Lyons(Crawley & Horsham at Parham),William Easterby (Holderness atDalton Park) and Tom Ellis (Bicesterwith Whaddon Chase at Whitfield)made the headlines with doubles attheir respective meetings.

Whilst at Friars Haugh (Duke ofBuccleuch’s) and Hackwood Park(Hampshire) the headlines were sharedequally between Tom Hamilton &Nick Orpwood and James Tudor &Page Fuller respectively. All four ridersrecorded doubles, with the latterscoring for a fourth consecutive timeaboard the evergreen veteran That’sRhythm.

I would also like to single out a specialmention for the National Hunt jockey

Tom Messenger, who is quicklymaking a name for himself as a trainerhaving saddled three winners from asmany runners this season.

Qoubilai followed-up his earlier win atHigham with a powerful display atWhitfield, proving far too good for thepromising and short-priced favourite,Grandturgeon, in the Ladies Open, maintaining Tom’s 100 per cent strikerate.

This week’s competition comescourtesy of Minkeys Tweed, and wehave teamed-up with them to give twolucky readers some luxury earwarmers;simply answer the question on page 10correctly to stand a chance of winningone of the excellent prizes.

There is also still another week toenter last week’scompetition to winone of five bagsof Top SpecRacing FeedBalancer – toenter click here.

Marc Barber, the National Novicechampion in 2002, has hung up hisboots to concentrate on training hisstring of Pointers. Although he didnot take out a licence to ride lastseason, he was keeping his optionsopen until deciding at the weekend tocall it a day.

He had his first ride at Barbury in2000, just three weeks after his 16th

birthday, on True Fortune, and openedhis account on the same horse atLydstep two months later. His finalvictory was on Interpleader atBredwardine in 2012, by which timehe had taken his tally to 46 betweenthe flags plus eight under Rules.

For two seasons he was amateur riderto Henry Daly, and rates LancastrianJet, on whom he scored four times,

and the Richard Lee-trainedMacgeorge, successful twice, as thebest he rode. He admits to being luckyto have escaped bad injuries, the worstbeing a broken arm in a last fence fallin the Dunraven Bowl in 2003.

Having held a trainer's licence for 12months in 2013-14, Marc isconsidering the possibility of renewingthis in the future.

CONNOLLY’S RED MILLS PRECISION NUTRITION SERIES 2014/15Duke of Buccleuch’s at FriarsHaughKalastar, trained by Sylvia Scott forKenny Telfer, showed the benefit of awind operation last August whentaking the Friars Haugh qualifier in thehands of Tom Hamilton, his thirdcourse victory. Despite looking beatenthree out he picked up after areminder to lead at the last and stayedon well.

The six-year-old, whose great-granddam Katevana is the dam of thesmart dual Aintree Fox Hunter heroKatarino, is still a big baby, reportedKatie Scott, representing her mother. His next target is Kelso’s BuccleuchCup Maiden Hunters’ Chase in April, with Katie believing “He’ll be bettersuited by racecourse fences becausehe’s such a good jumper.”

Tom, 19, who is currently battling forthe Northern area championship withNick Orpwood, doubled up in theClub Members’ race on the CliveStorey-trained The Gotfor Man beforehotfooting it to Newcastle to ride TheIce Factor, but his mount finished outwith the washing.

The runner-up Boy In Bangkok washimself formerly in Clive Storey’s yard

but is now trained by Venetia Wrigleyfor her husband Nicholas, a formerSenior Steward of the Jockey Club.

His dam Ninety-Five was a five-furlong sprinter who won three racesfor the Wrigleys, and he is the last foalbred by Venetia. “This was the lastditch attempt – Nick got fed up withme breeding things which weren’t anygood, so he said that was enough,” shelaughed.

“I’m such a novice at training, so I’mstill reeling,” claimed Venetia, whoseonly target for the nine-year-old at thestart of the season had been theMiddleton Members’ race. “He’s moreof a pet,” she added, describing him asversatile and a wonderful hunter. “He’sgoing hunting again on Wednesday, and if he hadn’t had such a hard racehe’d have been out again tomorrow[Monday]!”

Boy In Bangkok was partnered for hisparents by Ed Wrigley, a Londonstockbroker who keeps fit during theweek by cycling the 17 mile round tripto work.

Also earmarked for the BuccleuchCup is third-placed Mister D, onwhom Chris Dawson was deputisingfor Nick Orpwood, who was

committed to riding the fourth home,The Brig At Ayr.

Trained by Lesley Bewley, Mister D,who is a good ground horse, is a half-brother to his owner Clare Moore’sCoole Abbey, who won six HunterChases. He is ridden most days byLesley’s professional jockey sonJonathon, and last year wascampaigned under Rules.

“He had bad colic and we nearly losthim, but he had the summer off andhas come back in much better form,”explained Jonathon. “He’s veryexcitable and always on the go – henever walks anywhere! Once he’s fit hedoesn’t need much work.”

The Brig At Ayr was an inexpensivepurchase from John Weymes by hiscurrent trainer John Leadbetter, whosaddled Rubstic to win the 1979Grand National.

John, who is the Northern arearepresentative on the Point-to-PointOwners’ & Riders’ Associationcommittee, has an unbroken 52 yearsof Pointing ownership, and he is oneof the trio of The Brig At Ayr’sowners calling themselves The SheriffsPartnership. John himself is DeputyLieutenant of Berwickshire, while

Fiona Sample and Katie CrosbieDawson are both former High Sheriffsof Northumberland.

The Brig At Ayr needs top of theground, and his handler, whoincorporates Connolly’s feed into hisown mix from time to time – “Theyget bored with the same feed all thetime so I tend to change it” – has notruled out a trip to the Cheltenhamfinal, where he would be partnered asusual by Nick Orpwood, assistanttrainer with Lucinda Russell.

Dart Vale & HaldonHarriers atBuckfastleighDicky Bob, successful inthe three-finisherIntermediate atBuckfastleigh under JoBuck, who was riding her50th Point-to-Pointwinner, was bought as ayearling by owner-trainerVerity Nicholls in fairlyunusual circumstances.

Attending a party givenby her farrier, to whomthe youngster had beengifted as a foal by hisbreeder, the comedianJethro, Verity wandered, glass in hand, out to thestables where she spotteda large head looking overa door. “I thought he’dgrow into the head,” shereasoned, and havingconfirmed that he hadfour legs – “I’d probablyhad a bit too much todrink, and because it wasdark I couldn’t see intothe stable!” – she decidedto make the purchase.

Although she broke himin as a three-year-oldVerity, who combinesdoing her horses withfarming and working for a propertycompany, has had to be patient. “He’staken forever,” she admitted, the proofof that being that she didn’t get himonto a course until he was seven.

The grey is known at home as “thevillage idiot” due to his tendency to sitin the field gazing around him! He wasgoing to be registered as that beforeVerity had a change of heart andelected to call him Dicky Bob, whichwas the closest she could get to her

father’s Dicky Blob, who won 28 racesin the eighties and early nineties.

However, he will not be aimed at theCheltenham final. “It would be adream come true to run,” said Verity,“but his jumping is still too novicey. It’s a year too soon for him.”

Cheltenham could definitely be on theagenda for runner-up InfamousGrouse, although softish ground is arequirement. “The fences and the hillwon’t be a problem,” reasoned trainer

Nicky Martin, who sees the six-

year-old as a four-mile Chaser in themaking.

“He’s an old-fashioned Chaser withbig fat legs, and I never thought he’deven win a Maiden,” admitted Nicky, who purchased him as a three-year-oldin Ireland, as she does all the horseswhich run in the name of the BradleyPartnership. “The best of them gounder Rules, and we keep the rest forPoint-to-Pointing, which gives them areally good education,” she explained.

Oliver, Infamous Grouse’s stablename, may himself go into trainingnext year to join such as the NickyHenderson-trained One For TheGuv’Nr, victorious over hurdles atKempton at the weekend, while thePartnership has also enjoyed plenty ofsuccess with Philip Hobbs and JeremyScott.

“We used Neil Harris as our jockeyuntil he got too fat,” laughed Nickyirreverently, “so Darren [Edwards, who rides all the yard’s horses] took

over. Mind you, he wasusing a very small saddleon Oliver, so I told himhe must have had toomany takeaways lastweek!”

The tacky ground hadnot proved to the likingof Infamous Grouse, and Willie Bryan felt thegoing also contributed tothe defeat of thefavourite Lotus Pond, last home in third. “Wewere disappointed but itwas one race too many,”admitted the trainer, “Weran because it was aqualifier, but he’ll have abreak now to freshenup.”

Lotus Pond, formerlyowned by TrevorHemmings, waspurchased at Doncasterlast year out of AlanKing’s yard. He had littleform to recommendhim, “but I liked hispedigree,” Willie said.

Although easy at home, the seven-year-oldproved difficult whentaken racing. “He got soworked up and couldn’tbe left, so I had to stand

with him all day,” Willie revealed.Fitting him with a hood has calmedhim down and solved the problem, although he still needs a pony as atravelling companion.

The son of Beneficial, who is highlyregarded by both the trainer and hisjockey son Peter, has now qualified forboth the Intermediate and Restrictedfinals, but no decision has been madeas to whether he will contest both orjust one.

GETTING TO KNOW YOUDate of birth: 10th December 1991.Job or profession: Stable boy. I'll get aproper job one day!Are you from a racing background? Ifnot, how did you get started in Point-to-Pointing? Yes, both my parents rode,as did my grandfather, great grandfatherand three uncles. I grew up with myparents’ Point-to-Point yard at the bottomof the garden and started riding in Point-to-Points myself as soon as I turned 16.What was your first ride in public?30th December 2007 at Cottenham. Irode Native Performance who myparents had got for me as a schoolmaster.I missed the start but jumped the first infront, he was the strongest horse I haveever ridden and I was just a passenger. Heled to about four out then faded into 7th,with me doing absolutely nothing toencourage him to go any faster.First winner – name of the horse, owner & trainer, the date & thecourse: 28th February 2009 on Lord NMaster at Marks Tey. He was my secondseason schoolmaster, owned and trainedby my mum. Much like my first ride I wasa total passenger, but ‘Lordy’ was a totalprofessional, giving himself breathers andknowing exactly where the line was.Apart from the first winner, what hasbeen your most memorable ride?Possibly Thenford Ryde at Peper Harowin 2011. He dropped himself out of itafter the second fence and I’m sure hewas over a fence behind at some points. But, after a lot of kicking, scrubbing andshouting, he won quite cosily by fourlengths. I didn’t know whether to givehim a pat and called him a b*****d, orsmack him and say ‘well done’.Is there a ride you look back on andthink “could have done better?” Toomany to mention. I’ve had particularlyfrustrating days at Parham, I think I’vebeen second on about seven favouritesaround there and I still haven’t had awinner. For which trainers/owners do youmainly ride? My parents, but I now haveto share the rides with my sister. We alsoboth ride for Richard Thomas and HattieDandridge, who train in Worcestershire. My other rides come from varioustrainers in the South East. If I’m verylucky then Phil York legs me up onsomething or finds me a spare.Who has been most influential onyour riding career so far? My parents. My mum for putting so much intotraining the horses and my dad for hissupport; he would drive me to Scotland ifI said I had a ride there.

Which are your favourite courses? And for what reasons? Charing andAldington in Kent. Both are on over theEaster weekend and are the best daysracing when the sun is shining. I’ve alsohad a good bit of luck at both. I alsoenjoy trips to Kingston Blount towardsthe end of the season. What car do you drive? A Peugeot 206,although it’s my girlfriends car.Name your perfect night in andperfect night out: Night in is a take awayafter a successful day racing. Night out isa hunt ball or something similar.Where do you like to go on holiday?I’m awful at being on holiday, I gethomesick! I also can’t stand the heat; evenEngland is too hot for me during thesummer.Who would be your ideal travellingcompanions to the races? Ruby Walsh,so he can tell me how to ride. What music are you currentlylistening to? I have a mixed taste inmusic. Just starting to rediscover to ELOto the disgust of anyone within earshot! What are your favourite films and TVprogrammes? Hot Fuzz is a great film. How I Met Your Mother is easy to watchon TV, I must have watched everyepisode several times over. Bake Off andTop Gear are also favourites. What has been either your ownfunniest incident, or the mostamusing thing you have seen orheard at the races? Oz Wedmore is themost amusing thing I have seen. Themost amusing thing I heard was duringthe ride I mentioned on Thenford Ryde. Iwas approaching the fourth last, probablyabout 40 lengths behind the field, stillhard at him. Out of the packed PeperHarow crowd I heard a man shout ‘Goon son, give it a ride!’ I was chuckling allthe way to the line.Who are your biggest heroes inracing? Nothing original: Ruby Walsh,he’s the best by far, plus McCoy andRichard Johnson for their resilience, consistency and longevity.Which particular horse (in anydiscipline) would you like to ride?Anything Rich Ricci owns! AlsoSilviniaco Conti looks an awesome ride.I’m sure he’d be a cracking hunter as wellif they ever want a retirement home forhim!Apart from race-riding, in what othersports do you participate? I play tennisin the summer but I’d like to play more. Itried to play football one day in August; Ilasted about half an hour and sufferedfrom cramp for about five days afterwards.

Do you have any regrets in your ridingcareer to date? Not riding enoughwinners. My best season was my secondwhen I had seven, I thought I was awayafter that but I still haven't matched it.What ambitions do you have inracing? Long term target is to ride 100winners; meanwhile I am still looking fora first win in a Hunters’ Chase. Are there any changes that you thinkwould benefit the sport in the future?A boost to prize money would have ahuge positive effect; the lack of it puts alot of potential owners off. Also a 24hour forfeit/declaration stage would be anice idea, it would give people an idea ofwhere to go and make it a lot easier towrite previews! What are your aspirations for theseason? To ride a few winners. Can you give us a horse to look out forthis season? Loves Blind. Can you give us an up and comingrider to look out for this season?Charlie Marshall. If you were on an island and couldonly bring three things, what wouldyou bring? A black stallion, a volleyballand a speedboat. And finally, sum up Point-to-Pointingin one word: Entertaining.

For how long have you beentraining?About 18 years here in the UK,though I trained some pointers inIreland prior to that.

Where are you based?Sheriffhales, Shropshire.

Do you combine training withanother job or profession?Yes, I run the family farm with my sonAnthony.

What training facilities do you haveavailable?I have a 5.5 furlong all-weather gallop,3/4 mile canter track (only used in dryweather), a ménage and a 5 horsehorse walker.

How many horses do you train? It varies, but usually eight or under. Ihave six to run this season and acouple of youngsters tobring on. Iused to train quite a few more but amcontent to focus on quality overquantity nowadays.

Do you train for just yourself andfamily or for other Owners? For other owners. I have some veryfaithful long-standing owners who aregreat to train for as they do not putundue pressure on me.

Are you from a racing background? No, more a hunting background. Mygreat grandmother was a notoriouswoman to hounds who would hack 10miles to a meet in the days beforehorse boxes and my Dad lived hisracing ambitions through me.

What was the first winner you sentout – name, owner, rider, date, course?Eyton on Severn , a maiden race witha horse called Manoric which I rodeand trained when I was 18, but I amnot going to say how many years agothat was!!

Of which horse performance areyou most proud? As a jockey, Eliogarty taking me tovictory at Cheltenham and Aintree, making me the first woman to win atthe festival and over the nationalfences. As a trainer, Shales Rockwinning the Credit Call Cup atStratford in 2014. He was 80-1, riddenby my daughter Immy - even morespecial as I had bred both the jockeyand horse.

Did you race-ride before youstarted training?

Yes, for about 15 years. I don't knowexactly how many winners I rode butit must have been about 60.

How did you start training and whohas been most influential on yourtraining career? It was just a natural progression fromrace-riding and being involved inhorses all my life. One of the biggestinfluences must have been JohnHassett - a trainer in Ireland who Ispent my formative years with.

Which jockeys do you useregularly?Nowadays I am rather forced to stickwith my two daughters, Immy andKitty! Before his retirement I foundRichard Burton to be the greatestjockey and help to me as a trainer.

What car do you drive?A Honda Civic - the only car mybeloved black Labrador Ben can get inand out of these days.

What kind of music do you like?Adele and music from back in the daywhen I partied a bit harder.

What are your favourite films andTV programmes?Homeland and The Killing are twobox sets that I have been riveted by. Ican't stay awake through a whole film, especially when the fire is on!

Describe your perfect night in andperfect night out:Perfect night in: fire on, glass of redwine, two dogs asleep on the sofa, watching a good murder mystery.Perfect night out: going out for dinnerwith friends.

What do you do to take a breakfrom training – any hobbies orfavourite holiday destinations?Last summer I went to South Africawith my two daughters and found it tobe one of the best trips for a longtime. I also love going for long walksaround the farm with my dogs.

Who would be your ideal travellingcompanions to the races? My children and my dedicated helpers,Roy Smart and Lauren Whittam. (Andof course my dogs!)

Who are your biggest heroes – in orout of racing? My Dad, Jeremy Beasley, would haveto be my biggest hero as he madeeverything I do possible.

What has been your funniestincident at the races?

One time the tack locker flew openwhen en route to Eton Hall - coloursbag and buckets went flying. Funny inhindsight, not so much at the time!

Which particular horse would youlike to train – in Points and underRules?Eliogarty - he did everything soeffortlessly.

If you hadn’t taken up training, what would you have done instead?I had blinkers on from an early stage -it was always only ever going to beracing.

Which horses do you have at themoment that you would say havegood potential?Shales Rock and Shales Home Mix areboth very talented but also verytemperamental which makes themfrustrating to train.

What ambitions do you have inracing? To win at Cheltenham and Aintreewith homebred horse and homebredjockey.

What are your favourite coursesand meetings - and why?Cheltenham and Aintree because ofthe memories they bring back and thequality of racing. My Dad lovedBrampton Bryan as it's such abeautiful area and I've trained quite afew winners there.

What do you consider to be thebiggest challenges for Point-to-Point trainers? To balance the finances to keep usable to participate in the sport that welove.

What are your opinions on thechanges in Point-to-Pointing inrecent years?I think we need keep embracingchange in order to keep the sportmoving forward. As the Secretary of aPoint-to-Point, I am put underincreasing pressure to adhere to healthand safety regulations, but as a motherof two jockeys I think thesedevelopments are verynecessary.

What developments do you thinkwould benefit the sport in thefuture?I think introducing 2 ½ mile races(other than just maidens) to enablethose horses that don't quite get 3miles to be able to participate in thesport.

The name Bryan is synonymous withPoint-to-Point success. The late BillBryan was an outstanding trainerwhose achievements helped BobDavies - not to be confused with theGrand National- winning jockey - toland the National championship in1971, and later his own son John totake the title in 1978, while John'ssiblings Karen and Willie also rodeover 100 winners between them.If the family was concerned therewould be nobody to carry on its long-standing winning tradition, those fearshave been swiftly allayed by the arrivalon the scene of Willie's son Peter.Peter, who will be 18 at the end of thismonth and has worked for Karen'shusband Peter Bowen since he leftschool, made his debut at ChaddesleyCorbett in December 2013 onOverafrica, carrying the well-knowngreen and white colours of theteenager's maternal grandfather DavidSmith, and four months later heopened his account on the same horseat Brampton Bryan. He is currentlylying second in this season's NationalNovice championship, behind HarryCobden, with four victories to hisname. He enjoyed a successful Pony Racingcareer, winning around 15 races and

finishing fourth on Follow The Star inthe 148cm final at York. The winnerof that race was Sean Bowen, who isin no doubt about his cousin's ability."He's one of the best riders we've everhad in the yard," he declared. "He's sogood at getting horses to settle, andhe's the hardest worker in the yard aswell." And to illustrate Peter's workethic, Sean ran through a typical Bryanday. "He brought his Pointers here fora month, so he did those in theafternoon once he'd done the yardwork, then he'd do evening stables, and after that he'd got a couple ofponies to do."Peter has also received a complimentto savour from Yogi Breisner, withwhom he had a day's tuition pre-season, and who informed Willie thathis son had the most fantastic rhythmon a horse, something with whichWillie concurred. "He never looks as ifhe's doing much, but the horses dorun for him. He's a natural, unlike me- it took me a long time to get going!"smiled his father. One of Peter's regular rides atHaverfordwest is Ghost River, whofinished midfield in last week'sWeatherbys Champion Bumper at theCheltenham Festival, while of hisPointing mounts, there is no disguising

his enthusiasm for Lotus Pond, whosuffered a surprising defeat atBuckfastleigh at the weekend. He is currently learning to drive, andalready has the necessary funds to buya car, having saved all his wages. "Hedoesn't spend anything because all hedoes is work and sleep," grinned hismate Fred Timmis, who works inWillie's yard. Perhaps, though, the caris not the priority, as Peter's numberone ambition at the moment is to get aCategory ‘A' licence so that he can ridehis favourite horse in either, or both,of the Subaru Restricted andConnolly's Intermediate finals. At 6'2" tall and with a riding weight of10st7lbs, Peter, described by his fatheras "a talkaholic!" will probably settlefor staying amateur, which will allowhim to celebrate with a McDonald'sfrom time to time! At least there willbe no rivalry for Pointing rides withhis younger brother Josh, who comesout of a slightly smaller mould andnext year will be going to AndrewBalding as an apprentice. And should he lose out on the Novicechampionship by a couple of winners, there is one man he can blame. He hastwice finished second to Fred onCocacobana, of whom he laughed "Ijust can't get past him!"

SCENE & HEARDKen Hutsby's Penmore Mill, rated byjockey Tom Ellis as "the best I'veridden," tuned up for a crack at theAintree Fox Hunters' by winning the32Red Open Hunters' Chase atTowcester for the second successiveyear.

The victory came as a relief to bothTom and the trainer, Ken's son Fred, neither of whom had had much tocheer about in recent weeks. Fred hadlost the highly-regarded Vertical Glenat Horseheath last month, while Tomwas completing the course on onlythe second occasion in the samespace of time.

"I thought we were in trouble at thebottom of the hill," admitted Fred, but a mistake by the leader Pret A

Thou at the final ditch gave PenmoreMill an advantage which he held tothe post. "He's obviously been stoodon by another runner," said Fred'swife Caroline, explaining a small cuton the winner's pastern whichrequired the insertion of a fewstaples, a common procedure, fromthe racecourse vet.

Fred had taken the ten-year-oldhunting the previous Wednesday, buthe will have an easy time for the nextfew days, the reasoning being "He'llbe a nightmare for a week - he getssilly after a run."

Penmore Mill was purchased inIreland in 2010 by Fred and Caroline, and is named after a 19th century millon the Isle of Mull. He was bought

from his son and daughter-in-law byKen just prior to his winning debut atGarthorpe in 2011, and this triumphtook his tally to 13, five of whichhave been in Hunter Chases.

Tom's career total has now reached125, while Fred himself was a verysuccessful rider who recorded nearly90 victories, and whose starperformer Mighty Moss will be bestremembered for his one lengthsecond to Istabraq in the RoyalSunalliance Novices' Hurdle at the1997 Cheltenham festival.

Towcester, though, was not such ahappy hunting ground for the jockey."I didn't have many rides here, and Ilost the only race I "won" byweighing in light," he recalled.

Mark Wall and Keen EyePhoto: Tim Holt [email protected]

RECENT LANDMARKSJockeys firsts, doubles and other career highs by Carolyn Tanner

“It’s a fickle old game,” smiled MarkWall after Jason Warner’s Keen Eyehad brought up his 200th careersuccess in the Conditions race atLarkhill. Up until Saturday there hadbeen little for Mark to be cheerfulabout this season, in particular due tothe loss at Cheltenham last week ofhis yard’s flagship bearer TheatreQueen, who had been his 199thwinner in the Champion Novices’Hunters’ Chase (John Corbet Cup) atStratford in May.

However, his belief that “at somepoint your luck’s got to change,” wasjustified in no uncertain terms as hegot his campaign up and running byadding a further two winners – TimSage’s Perfectly Willing in the MixedOpen and Hugh Wilson’s Dandan inthe Restricted – towards his nexttarget, that of a double centurybetween the flags.

Mark, 41, opened his account atMollington in 2000 on Impenny, andKeen Eye took his Point-to-Point tallyto 175, including one in Ireland, in theAnglo-Irish Challenge in 2013. He hasfinished in the top half dozen in the

National championship table in thelast few years, and was joint-third lastseason. Among his 25 victories underRules are seven on Divine Intavention.

Last year he took out a public traininglicence, and currently has six horses torun under Rules, plus the samenumber for Pointing, these being inthe care of his wife Axelle.

Gina Andrews recorded her 100thPoint-to-Point victory in the SubaruRestricted at Parham on the DavidPhelan-trained Running In Heels.

Her initial triumph came just a weekafter her sixteenth birthday on MovingEarth at Cottenham in 2008, her firstride. That year she won the PrincessRoyal trophy and was runner-up in theNational Novice championship toLucy Jones, while in 2010/11 she tookthe National Ladies’ award, her 22successes being nine clear of herfellow East Anglian, Louise Allan. Sheis currently on course to regain thetitle won last season by her sisterBridget, and is two ahead of hernearest pursuer Catherine Walton.

Gina, who runs a yard in Warwickshirewith her fiancé Tom Ellis, is also oneof the country’s most successful ladyriders under Rules. Last month sherecorded her fortieth victory on alicensed track – 37 over jumps andthree on the flat – thus reducing herclaim against professionals to 3lbs.

Jo Buck completed a half-centurybetween the flags when landing theConnolly’s Red Mills Intermediate atBuckfastleigh on Verity Nicholls’sDicky Bob. She has also partnered fivewinners under Rules.

Jo, who opened her account on UrbanHunter at Cothelstone in 2003, is aformer Devon & Cornwall area ladies’champion. She was third in the2009/10 National championship, andfourth in 2011/12. She had led thetitle race for much of the lattercampaign but a broken ankle sustainedat Cheltenham in early May put paid toher chance of victory.

A former driving instructor, Jo is nowworking towards a degree in Podiatry.

Sunday was a red letter day for HughNugent, 20, who opened his accountin the 24f Maiden at Hackwood Parkon the Andrew Campbell-trainedFiasco. Hugh has had approximately30 rides, divided between Pointing andRules, and has had placings on the flatand over jumps.

He has worked in racing since leavingschool, firstly with Colin Tizzard andcurrently with Charlie Longsdon, whose yard he joined last July.

He will be going to University nextyear to read History, but hopes tocontinue race-riding under all codes.

24-year-old Nick Lawton, who hasplenty of hunting experience under hisbelt, enjoyed his initial success in the

2m4f Maiden at Larkhill onAnglingforcharlie, owned and trainedby Bethan Childs.

Nick is in his second year working forPhilip Hobbs, and has had about 25rides.

There was a dream debut ride atWhitfield for Phoebe Taylor, who wonthe Members’ race on the formerChaser Irish Guard. Phoebe, 22, is inher final year reading InternationalAgriculture & Equine at Cirencester’sRoyal Agricultural College.

While at the RAC she has been ridingout for Kim Bailey, and she also spentsome time on a work placement inFrance with Eoghan O’Neill.

Irish Guard had been in retirementsince 2013, but was offered to Phoebeby John O’Neill when he heard shewas looking for a Pointer to ride. Thecolours he carried at Whitfield werethose which were worn to victory byPhoebe’s mother Phillippa (neeBradbery), who had enjoyed asuccessful partnership with Straits inthe eighties.

TRAINER TALKJENNY PIDGEON

Some of you will remember Jenny Pidgeon as the trainer of top-class horses like Wild Illusion and Orchestral Suite, those with longer memories as the rider of the brilliant Matchplay and Zarajeff. But however you know the doyenneof Astwell Castle Farm, near Brackley in Northamptonshire, nobody can deny that Jenny is one of the biggestcharacters in the sport writes Jake Exelby

Jenny has lived on the farm all her life.Astwell Castle itself is in theDomesday Book (although the trainerassures me she isn’t!) and was used tohouse prisoners of war in the SecondWorld War. Jenny’s parents moved intothe castle in the 1950s and the familyhas been based there ever since.

Her late father Graham is fondlyremembered by aficionados of Point-to-Pointing, first as a trainer himself, then later as the owner of most of thetop horses that his daughter rode andtrained. So how did Jenny get started?“I wasn’t interested in Pointing as achild,” she tells me with a smile. “Iused to get dragged along to placeslike Lowsonford and Crowell but wasmuch more interested in showjumpingand eventing. But one day, I was givena racehorse and told to get onwith it!”

“In my day, girls weren’tallowed to ride in races until wewere 18,” she continues. “Dadlet me ride two horses in myfirst season – Consolidate andMalaria – and I won twice oneach of them. I think one ofthe races was at Garthorpe.”Presumably she showed earlysigns of the champion jockeyshe would become? “No, Ishould think I was completelyuseless – but the one thing Icould do was obey instructions.Consolidate was a hold-uphorse, you couldn’t hit the frontwith him until after the last. SoI did as I was told.”

Moving forward to the 1980s,Jenny was undoubtedly thequeen of the the Point-to-Pointarena. She was championfemale jockey four times, from 1982 to1985 (once jointly with MandyLingard), mostly riding horses ownedand trained by her father, somethingthat is unlikely to happen again withthe game becoming increasinglyprofessional. The horses she rode tovictory include some of the best-known names in the history of thesport. There was Matchplay – “a two-miler really, but he won loads ofPoints as his class carried him home”,Random Leg – “owned by Dad andBarry Brazier, probably the best horseI ever rode”, French Peacock – “weran him in Adjacent Hunts Races andhe must have won more than 20 racescarrying 13 stone, I could barely liftthe weightcloth” and her favourite ofall, the mighty Zarajeff.

“He was my favourite,” Jenny admits.“Everybody knew him. He was aflashy grey… with a flashy style of

running. You’d get to two out, pressthe button, and he’d go 20 lengthsclear. He was so exciting to ride, withsuch a turn of foot. And he lovedBadbury Rings – he was unbeatenthere in six seasons. I don’t know howmany races we won together, you’dhave to look it up.” Don’t worry Jenny,I did – the answer is 33!

When I put it to Jenny that she was apioneer among female riders, shescoffs. “Pat Tollit, now she was apioneer. And Sue Aston, she wasseriously good.” The best female riderhowever, coming from one whoshould know, was Polly Curling. “Shehad so much ability, but moreimportantly, the strength to match themale jockeys.”

Just as Jenny had the privilege to ridesome top-class horses, the same wastrue of her training career. I have aparticular memory of Wild Illusioncarrying Ian McKie (and my first ever£20 bet) to victory at Cheltenhamamong his 26 successes. Then shetrained Orchestral Suite, a winner ofnine out of 11 completed starts –“probably my best horse ever, betterthan Wild Illusion, but fragile” – andthe talented half-brothers Sing inRhythm and Mid Day Miller. “Theywere owned by Cliff Cox – I think heonly had the racehorses to keep hisOlympic showjumpers company! Theywon two divisions of the Maiden raceon the same day at Kingston Blount.Mid Day Miller was as good a horse asI’ve ever sat on.”

As well as her high-profile horses,Jenny has had high-profile owners inher yard. One such was star footballer

Stuart Pearce. “I trained Man Of TheMatch for him and he was lovely man, quite different to his ‘Psycho’ persona. It was a while before I realised who hewas – the horse won at Dingley oneday and people were asking for hisautograph. I didn’t have a clue!”

Over the years, she has graduallydownscaled her training operation andnow has just the one horse in training,Classic Destiny, a good recent secondon his seasonal reappearance. “Des” istwo thirds-owned by loyal supporterPeter Riddle. “The other third wasowned by Paul Clayton,” Jenny tellsme, “but he sadly died last year. Sowe’d love someone to take it on in hismemory.”

We watch the horse canter five timesround the all-weather gallop at

Astwell Castle Farm under theloyal Katie Henson. “I’ve beenriding work for Jenny for atleast 20 years,” reminiscesKatie. “I used to team-chaseOrchestral Suite and ride othergood horses like Anurag, Cut aNiche and Dalametre.” “AndJoe Smoke,” Jenny chips in.“Do you remember the time hedumped you in the hedge whenCarolyn Tanner came to seeus?”

No meeting with Jenny wouldbe complete without asking forher views on Point-to-Pointing,a sport she has loved andgraced with her presence for solong. We start with the debateabout the increasingprofessionalism. “I worry, butthen don’t we all? It’s sad thatyards have got so big at theexpense of individuals, but it’s

inevitable. I’d hate to see owner-ridersmade to feel less welcome in Pointsand it would be great to have half adozen races specifically for them.”

She continues in the same vein. “I’mviolently against joint yards. You’reeither National Hunt or you’re not.And I don’t like the 60-day rule (wherehorses can run professionally and inPoint-to-Points in the same season). You’re either a Pointer or a ‘Rules’horse”.

As for experienced former high-classanimals going Pointing, “there shouldbe loads more veterans races forNational Hunt horses. But it’s not anew problem.” And her opinion ofNovice Riders races? “Unprintable!”

But I’ll let Jenny end on a positivenote. “We all moan, but most of usrealise how lucky and spoilt we are tobe able to do this.” I firmly agree.

WHEN THE CURREFIRST HELD A MEETING

The first Point-to-Point races held inconnection with the Lady Curre Hunt -as it was then known - were held atUphill Farm, near Chepstow in 1939,and to celebrate the occasion an R.A.F.pilot gave a daring display of aerobaticsover the course.

Henry Clay, the Honorary Secretary andClerk of the Course, rode in grand styleto win the Farmers’ race on the odds-onfavourite Best Way and earlier hisbrother, Gerald Leigh Clay, had won theAdjacent Hunts’ race on his owngelding Freeborough.

The Women’s Nomination race went toCaptain Tullach’s Easter, ridden by MissPatience Straton, of St Mellons, nearCardiff. However, the easiest winner ofthe day was Dr Martin’s Alley Boy.

Well ridden by Geoffrey Scudamore, thegrandfather of National Hunt champion

jockey Peter Scudamore, and father ofMichael who won the Grand Nationalon Oxo, he came home a distance infront of Hubert of Glamorgan in theAdjacent Hunts’ Farmers’ race.

The Hon. Mrs Basil Mundy, who hadhorses with Tenby trainer DavidHarrison and later Fred Rimell, acted asStarter and with her biting tongue - shewas known as ‘Hellcat Mundy’ - musthave been a good one at that!

After the war, the races were revived atHowick not far from ChepstowRacecourse and thanks to the Jenkinsand Price families, this delightful courseis still in use today.

It would be impossible to list all the fineriding performances over the years bythe likes of Bill Jones, Colin Davies,Dick Bowen, Jim Thomas, Mike

Williams, Tim Rooney and JohnLlewellyn to name just some.

However, one that should be singled outis that of Newport born Barry Thomaswho in 1971 rode in all four Men’s raceson the card and won them all.

The same sentiment would apply to allthe good horses that have run atHowick, but special mention must bemade of Milton Bradley's mare Octroiwho was unbeaten in nine races there.

The grey Sylvester II, Nearly There II,Stoney Bridge, Mr Worth, Mandryka andChesnut Annie are just some of thegood horses that graced the Howickcourse over the years.

SCENE & HEARD"Easy this game, isn't it!" laughedowner-trainer Roger Willcox, following the victories of his duoPatricktom Boru and Lauberhorn ona day which also saw a riding treblefor John Mathias.

Down to just the two horses in hiscare, and unlikely to add furtherhereafter ("I'm not buying in anymore at my age", he insisted), Willcoxgot off the mark for both theafternoon and the season withPatricktom Boru, whose 3l score inan eventful Confined completed ahat-trick in Points for the eight-year-old - all recorded under Evan David -stretching back to an YstradowenIntermediate 11 months previously.

"We can train them first time out, andwe've been waiting for the ground tocome right", advised the Bridgendbuilder of his son of Brian Boru, previously only ever a winner ongood or faster before this triumph ona good to soft (but drying) surface."He's worried us along the way, though. Around December time helost some weight and condition, andwe never worked out why. He's justcome back to himself recently, andwe might even have gone to BlackForest Lodge [for the Mid Devonfixture], but the ground there was toobad".

Willcox is likely to strike whilst theiron is hot - or at least, whilst racingexperiences however long-lasted arespite from the muddy conditions

that have predominated so far thiswinter - and commit Patricktom Boruto either or both of a visit to theBonham Men's Open at this comingweekend's Curre & Llangibby fixtureat Howick and the LlewellynHumphreys Novices' Hunter Chase atFfos Las on March 26th. A repeat tiltat the Dunraven Bowl at Chepstowafter that, however, is not a certainty, following the gelding's labouring to a68l fourth last year on ground goodto soft in name only.

Although his name features foremostagainst Patricktom Boru's name asowner and trainer, Roger Willcoxdoes not pay for all of his charge'supkeep alone. "Bill Corrigan is the

"I'll give you a kiss, Evan, and youcan have one as well, Brian!" - inplayful mood after Patricktom Boru'ssuccess, Willcox is intent on trying toplant a smacker on both his riderEvan David and Welsh Pointingcorrespondent Brian Lee.

Whilst the winner took on all ofLlanfrynach's fences perfectlyenthusiastically, Confined rival andodds-on favourite Harpsy Cord tookan instant and marked dislike to thislongstanding course's drop fence(5/12), slamming down the brakesfuriously on approaching it on bothcircuits to the audible gasps of theassembled crowd.

That is no reflection on the fencesthemselves, for all that they haven'talways been this venue's greatestasset. Old editions of the HunterChasers and Point-to-Pointersannuals had described them as "awful- very flimsy" until 2008, andthereafter as "rebuilt and now verybig but butter soft, like bullfinches".The current incarnations of theobstacles look the best there havebeen here in living memory, however;better packed and robust now, andattractively presented.

"That was well worth the trip and thewrong turn", smiled Anna Metekohy, hinting at a circuitous trip across

from her new base in Yelden,Buckinghamshire (see recent riderprofile) to the Powys venue in orderto resume last season's fruitfulpartnership with Lauberhorn. As withPatricktom Boru, Roger Willcox'sother inmate hit the ground runningfor the season, coasting to a first-timevictory at the expense of HighlyUnlikely and Chesnut Annie, the last-named having blundered away a leadand all chance three out.

As likely as his stablemate to make aquick reappearance at Howick whilstground conditions encourage it, thefive-time winner from last seasonseems less likely to be trained withany hunter chase targets in mind thistime around. "You have to realisewhat he is, and that's not a chaser",explained Willcox, "which inhindsight is why he didn't jump aswell at Stratford [when pulling up inlast May's AGA Final]. Anna worriesabout the different sort of fences youcan come across over here, but thefact is he does just make the oddmistake".

In a sport in which sophisticatedtraining methods, access to syntheticgallops and the like abound rathermore than may have been the casepreviously, Willcox's regime forPatricktom Boru and Lauberhornremains steadfastly uncomplicated."We take the two horses in thehorsebox up to the mountain behindthe Llangeinor Arms pub, work oneup the mountain and keep the otherin the box, and then swap over anddo the same with the other. We have

to - it's all we've got! Big thanks mustgo to Snicker, who's the lad who doesall of that work with them".

The enigmatic "Snicker" beingStephen Parkhouse, no stranger totraining Pointing winners in his ownright through the likes of one-timeLower Machen scorer A Bit Of Class.

"Number seven, Lauberhorn, riddenby Anna... Anna... Metocky" - thename of the Netherlands' finestPointing rider proves a step too farfor the Brecon & Talybont's racedayannouncer, also heard during theafternoon rechristening MathewBarber as "Barbara" and HectorWorsley as "Wolsey". Does that lastmistake count as a Cardinal sin?

The reappearance at fourteen years ofage of the aforementioned ChesnutAnnie in the Ladies Open might havesurprised a few, tempus fugit havingfinally seemed to take the upper handduring a 2013-14 campaign in whichBeth Roberts' hugely popular maremanaged a solitary win in a thinlycontest Llanvapley mares-onlyconditions event.

Horses are often best at decidingwhen they have had enough, however, and the 38-time race winner appearsto be another such case in point.

"She just doesn't want to retire andshe's going well at home, so we'recontinuing", Roberts summarisedsuccinctly ahead of the mare'sseasonal bow and first start under

Mid division for LadiesOpen Race winnerLauberhorn (no.7) andAnna Metekohy

Emma Moseley, the latter thusbecoming Chesnut Annie's thirteenthpartner during an unbroken ten-season career (a feat of longevity anddurability matched by the currentlyTim Sage-trained Presentandcorrect, also in action on the same day atDidmarton).

Out of luck with Chesnut Annie,Roberts nevertheless got her name onthe scoresheet courtesy of a well-deserved victory for Kims Quest indivision one of the Open Maiden. This was not a success earned bydefault despite the proliferation ofmishaps which befell all bar two ofthe participants, as the daughter ofNeedle Gun travelled and jumpedpleasingly throughout and made bestuse of her already considerableexperience under the now EvanWilliams-based Darach Skelly.

"She's not another Chesnut Annie -she's okay, but not that good",insisted Roberts' partner Dai Hughesafter greeting in the seven-year-old,"but she's still money well spent. Wegot her at Goresbridge as a three-year-old for 850 euros, when Kim[Thomas, fellow trainer and alsoleader-up of the Roberts pair] wentto buy a horse. She didn't buy her,

but we did - but we still named thehorse after Kim!"

Placed in a Newton Abbot bumper inAugust 2012 and flitted betweenRules and Pointing campaigns eversince, a return to summer jumping isonce again the eventual aim.

The Ladies Open may not have fallento its most prolific participant, butthe Men's equivalent half an hourearlier did, as Rosies Peacock held onfor a 1.5l victory from the rallyingTiger Rag to complete the second legof John Mathias's aforementionedhat-trick and take his winning tallybetween the flags to 23 successesfrom 46 outings (sixteen of thoseunder Mathias).

It's been noted in one or twodispatches in cyberspace that the one-time Lady Dudley Cup hero hasseemed further forward this seasonthan is often the case, a view handlerDavid Llewellyn not only concurredwith but was able to offer anexplanation for. "He's got a niceyoungster that works with him nowcalled Princess Tina, and I definitelythink she's helped get him fitter.Whenever she gets upsides him, hefinds a bit more, so I'm sure he wouldhave also have found more if thesecond had got closer to him here".

Princess Tina herself will be seen outat some stage this season, and hopesare high that this half-sister towinning Maiden Pointer TwigaWoods can step up markedly on twopulled-up efforts last backend. "She'llstill be green when she runs, but shewill win a Maiden this year",Llewellyn predicted.

And of the plans for Rosies Peacock- do all roads lead once again toChaddesley? Not necessarily."Nothing's set in concrete thisseason", Llewellyn advised. "Possiblythe Lady Dudley, possibly theBonhams Final. We'll go to Herefordand then Lydstep first of all, and thensee from there".

Victorious aboard Rosies Peacock inwhat proved to be the closest finishof the day, John Mathias had ratherless to worry about in securing eitherof the other two legs of this treble, finishing alone on the Katy Price-trained Champagne Benefit in amatch for the opening HuntMembers event.

A win for sole rival Kerry Mganga(Nick Williams) would haveconstituted a second between theflags in as many weeks for an entirehorse following Shannon Silver'sCorbridge success six days earlier, but

stumps were drawn with the grey acircuit from home following asuccession of jumping errors.

"Champagne Benefit has run in somegood races at big tracks this season,so he was entitled to have a nice runround there", beamed Nick Elliottafter the gelding he co-owns withLord David Lipsey sauntered home inhis own time to supplement harder-fought recent successes atCocklebarrow and Larkhill.

The first of those qualified the son ofBeneficial for the newly inauguratedbumper for Point-to-Pointers to beheld at Aintree on May 15th, andElliott certainly has that target in hissights; "2m to 2m2f under Ruleswould be perfect for him, and I'd liketo see him go. Lord Lipsey is keeneron Pointing as a means to itself, but Isee it more as a stepping stone toRules racing".

Price's strike-rate so far this termfrom numerically limited ammunitionhas earned plaudits from seasonedobservers on Pointing forums, andit's a success story that hasn'thappened by accident. "Katy boughtChampagne Benefit in Ireland, andshe goes over there a lot", enthusedElliott, adding; "She is a very efficientresearcher, always has a shortlist andnever, ever wings a purchase".

Mathias's leg-up on ChampagneBenefit was facilitated by regularpartner James Nixon's ultimatelyunsuccessful engagement for TomSymonds at Sandown, and is

presumably unlikely to become apermanent arrangement. One that therider evidently very much hopes willbe, however, is that with DesertmoreView, an impressive all-the-waywinner of the Restricted for ownerRachel Hooton and trainer MarcBarber.

"I will be available to ride himwherever he goes - I love him",confirmed Mathias on returning," andwhilst I was really disappointed whenhe fell at the last at Larkhill last timeout [clear at the time on his Britishdebut], he ticked so many boxes forme there".

A former inmate of Denis Leahy'sCounty Cork yard, for whom hestood a couple of years of just lightcampaigning under Rules and inPoints, the Fruits Of Love seven-year-old is a second winner betweenthe flags for owner (and leader-up)Rachel Hooton, who runs a pair ofnursing homes in Wolfscastle,Pembrokeshire. Mathias had alsopartnered the first, last May's Trecoedscorer No More Whispers.

Having got one winner on the boardcourtesy of Desertmore View, theCarmarthenshire hunt supplied onemore in the concluding event. A fullbrother to Sue Sharratt's veteranPointer Scotmail Too, as well as ahalf-sibling to three other Rulesscorers, the Nick Williams-ridden FireSale grabbed the second division ofthe Open Maiden by the scruff with acircuit to go and held on resolutely

for a four-length verdict in much thequicker of the two legs.

"We got him late last season and got acouple of runs into him, and he'dhave finished second at Lydstep butfor falling", outlined winning handlerDean Coleman. "He's a differenthorse this year, and we can kick onfrom here. He'll have a bit of a rest, but he'll be one for Lydstep overEaster. We'll have plenty entered upfor that".

For "plenty", read as many as theformer Point and Rules rider's eight-strong string as can be found a racefor. "We've a couple of Restrictedclass horses, and some old fun horses- definitely not all Maidens. Nick willride them all when available".

Coleman's misadventures outwithracing of a few years ago are welldocumented and needn't be revisitedin these pages; suffice it to say that apromising new set-up in Amroth ishelping the former Tim Vaughanemployee start afresh, and hadalready yielded one training success atthe backend of last season.

The backing and input of Fire Sale'sowner Chris Williams runs right tothe core of the operation. "Chris ismy girlfriend's father, and he makeshorseboxes for a living", Colemancontinued. "He's had horses in thepast, and he's also the father of[multiple pony race winner] LorcanWilliams. It's all gearing up towardshelping Lorcan in Points from nextyear".
