GIRL POWER!It was a shame to see two of lastweekend’s meetings fall victim of therecent cold weather but on a positivenote they have both been rearranged;the Cambridge with Enfield Chacenow runs on Saturday 14th Februaryand original entries stand, whilst theSouth Durham at Mordon will takeplace the following weekend onSunday 22nd where fresh entries willbe taken.Despite the loss of the above therewas still plenty of action to digest andit was a particularly successfulweekend for the Lady riders of oursport. Firstly on Saturday it wasCatherine Walton who stole the showat Alnwick, firing in a tremendoustreble for the local trainer, VictorThompson, the final leg comingaboard Sharivarry in the Ladies Open.Thompson’s winning streak didn’t endthere though as Stoney landed theOpen Maiden in the hands of KitAlexander to secure a fantastic four-timer on the day.Elsewhere on Saturday it wasabsolutely fantastic to see Palypso DeCreek win at Wetherby for a thirdconsecutive year, jumping andgalloping his two higher-rated rivals in

to the ground, under a great ride fromClaire Hart.Hart’s weekend got even bettertwenty-four hours later when sheteamed-up with trainer RichardBandey at Milborne St Andrew topartner Alskamatic to success in theLadies Open. The nine-year-old wasslightly unfortunate to bump in toCurrent Event on his first try in thegrade but proved to be at home in thisgrade with a five-length success. The aforementioned Current Eventfirmly put his name at the forefront ofthe UK challenge for the covetedCheltenham Foxhunters in March.Rose Loxton’s prize asset, nowregularly ridden by Bryony Frost, wasdelivered perfectly by his young Ladyrider having been waited with off thepace for much of the contest. The pairjumped superbly and won impressivelyenough to suggest they could make animpact in the Festival.Alan Hill’s Harbour Court alsowarmed up for the Foxhunters with anarrow success in the Mens Open atMilborne St Andrew. Fifth in theshowpiece last year despite a less thanideal preparation, Hill’s stable star willnow go straight to Cheltenham and

should appreciate the greater test ofstamina facing him at Prestbury Park.Black Forest Lodge was the othervenue to stage racing over theweekend courtesy of the Mid Devonon Sunday, and it was another successstory for the Ladies with HannahWelch taking the Ladies Open onBeuvron, Taylor Pook landing theSubaru Restricted on Tolatetobeearlyand Leanda Tickle came out on top inthe Open Maiden (Div I) aboard WayBefore Dawn. This ensured that seven Point-to-Pointraces, as well as both Hunter Chaseswere won by Lady riders, a greatpositive for our sport given the lack ofopportunities for female jockeys underRules still a major concern.Switching the focus to the weekendahead and the forecast provides uswith optimism that the four remainingmeetings will takeplace and goahead asplanned…keep yourfingerscrossed!Ben Roe,Editor

RACING UK ANYWHERE OPENHUNTERS' CHASEby Carolyn TannerPalypso De Creek’s love affair withWetherby continued last week, whenhe took his unbeaten run at the trackto four by completing an early seasonHunter Chase hat-trick to go with hisHurdles victory in 2011.

With just two opponents, one ofwhom failed to put his best footforward and the other being let downby his jumping, the race took littlewinning, but such was the enthusiasmwith which the French-bred travelledthat he would surely have been hard topeg back in any case. “He loves it here, and he knows his job,” enthused riderClaire Hart, who has partnered him toall his 13 Point-to-Point and fourHunter Chase victories. After losinghis confidence following a heavy fall atHaydock, his trainer Charlie Longsdonrecommended to owner Alan Halsall

that he should go to Claire, whoworked in the Longsdon yard, for ayear to try the amateur sport.

At the end of that 2011-12 campaignhe was due to be sold, and formerhorse transporter Nick Sarsonsuggested his purchase to currentowner/trainers Mike and Jill Dawson. They have not regretted it, despite his“foul” behaviour in the stable, wherekicking and biting is an everyday habit.

His next outing may possibly be anattempt to repeat last year’s success ina Hunter Chase at Doncaster in afortnight’s time.

It was a seventh triumph under Rulesfor Claire, who clocked up the mileageover the weekend, driving from herCotswold base to Yorkshire onSaturday and to Dorset the followingday, when she took the Ladies’ Openat Milborne St Andrew on Alskamatic.

RIDER PROFILEOZ WEDMORE

At the age of 11, Oz Wedmorecontacted near neighbour, licensedtrainer Di Grissell, with a view tohelping out at the Brightling Park yardwhere the family also train Pointers. "Ithought I was going to muck out, butshe said ‘Bring your boots,' and I'vebeen riding out there ever since," hesmiled.

Oz followed in the footsteps of hismother, a regular in the hunting field, and he competed in pony races - "Ididn't win any but I had lots ofseconds."

He had his first Point-to-Point ride onSoldershire at Detling in 2011, cominghome last of the five who completedin the Novice Riders' contest. Afterthree further unsuccessful forays onthe same horse, he handed the reins tohis twin brother Quentin for him tomake his debut in the Hunt race atCatsfield.

Oz had intended to play the role ofspectator, but on the morning of themeeting picked up a spare ride onTirol Livit, due to owner Yoni Sharp's

injury. Not only did Tirol Livit obligeto give Oz his initial victory, but thejockey had the temerity to beat one ofhis mentors, Hannah Grissell, intosecond place!

Quentin finished third on what hasbeen his only ride to date, although hemay become involved again when hereturns from Australia, where he isspending a second gap year breakingin polo ponies.

Oz has since taken his tally betweenthe flags to seven, and his 14 ridesunder Rules, both in Hunter Chasesand against professional opposition, have yielded three seconds, two thirdsand three fourth placings, all bar oneon Orfeo Conti. Every one of theseoutings paled into insignificance, though, beside the French-bred'scompletion in the 2014 Aintree FoxHunters' Chase, albeit a considerabledistance behind the winner Warne. "Itwas a dream come true to ride in therace, and to get round," Oz affirmed.

He is in the first year of a three-yeargeography course at Reading

University, and keeps fit by playing forthe hockey team and cycling - "I haterunning!" he says vehemently. He alsorides out for Chris Gordon, andcontinues to hunt as much as he can, while in his gap year he worked forNicky Henderson, at whose yard heregularly rode Josses Hill.

Like many riders without the backingof a big yard, he finds spare rides hardto come by, and depends on the smallowners who train just one or twohorses. Whereas some of hiscontemporaries might feel it is not intheir interest to ride anything theyconsider to be moderate and unlikelyto showcase their ability, Oz rarelyturns down an offer, reasoning "Thefirst horse you ride for someone maynot be very good, but there's alwaysthe chance that a decent one maycome along later, and you'd hope theowner will continue to put you up."Despite being 6'1½" he has no weightproblems, and rode at 9st7lbs inSeptember.

Mygrandfather died that night, which made the win thatmuch more meaningful. Is there a ride you lookback on and think “couldhave done better?” Gettingbeaten on Alskamatic in theIntermediate final atCheltenham last May was agutter. #gopointing 11 www.pointtopoint.co.uk

For how long have you beentraining?Seven years.

Where are you based?Newmarket, Suffolk.

Do you combine training withanother job?Full time mummy to Tom and TedBraithwaite.

What training facilities do youhave? We are extremely lucky here inNewmarket to have everything youcould wish for, loads of different allweather gallops, grass gallops, schooling fences on grass and polytrack and a loose school.

How many horses do you train?I’ve got eight at the moment.

Do you train for just yourself andfamily or for other owners? All the horses are for outside owners,I'm married to an accountant so wedon't own any ourselves!

Are you from a racing background? No - I started out in eventing.

What was the first winner you sentout?Duke of Stradone, owned by my nowfather-in-law and ridden by me; wewon a novice riders race at Higham on11th April 2009.

Of which horse performance areyou most proud?Fourth In Line running in theIntermediate final at Cheltenham in2013. When Andrew and I firstbecame involved with the horse hewasn't that keen to go anywhere near ahurdle let alone a fence. He is nosuperstar, but to watch him enjoyjumping round Cheltenham was veryrewarding. Getting Berties Dream toCheltenham last year was quite specialtoo - even if he didn't enjoy it as muchas we did.

Did you race ride before training?Yes, I had two winners from 10 rides. Iwasn't very good and thought this wasa good strike rate to end on!

How did you start training and whohas been most influential?I started when a friend of Andrew'ssent us a horse which we trained freeof charge and it just built on from

there. Most influential for me wouldbe David Kemp, who I rode out forbefore I started training. Also, myhusband Andrew - he learnt a hugeamount working for ChristopherSporborg and riding out at Alan andLawney Hill's.

Which jockeys do you useregularly?Andrew Braithwaite and GinaAndrews.

What car do you drive?Kia Sedona - only thing big enough tofit all of the baby gear and the dogs. Alittle piece of me died when webought a people carrier!

What kind of music do you like?Johnny Cash, Snow Patrol, EdSheeran, Stevie Wonder.

What are your favourite films andTV programmes?

TV - Homeland, The Good Wife andpro bull riding. Films - Butch Cassidyand the Sundance Kid, anything withPaul Newman in.

What would be your perfect nightin/night out?Perfect night in and outIn - Chinese takeaway and a bottle ofPouilly Fuissé with Andrew.Out - Dinner at a nice pub with ourfriends. What do you do to take a breakfrom training? We normally go on holiday with agroup of pointing people to a greatplace in Spain in the summer. Wemissed it this year as the babies wereso small, and I’m not sure we will beallowed back next year with toddlers intow!

Who would be your ideal travellingcompanions to the races?Roy Green to drive and bring thepicnic, Grace Pugh to sort the tunesout - and Ryan Gosling.

Who are your biggest heroes? The NICU nurses at Addenbrookeshospital. I used to think I worked hardwith the horses but they are a differentleague and are doing something thatreally matters.

Funniest incident at the races?Rupert Stearn's bit broke on one atMarks Tey a few years ago; it caused

some havoc in the race until it jumpedthe string back into the lorry park withRupert still on board. Andrew'simpressions of what Rupert wassaying through the race always makeme laugh.

What horse would you like to train? In Points - Glint Of Steel; under Rules- Faugheen.

If you hadn't taken up training, what would you have done instead?I would probably have had 101different jobs; I am no good atworking for anyone else. Training isthe only thing I have been able to stickat.

Which horses do you have at themoment that have good potential?Sadly I don't think we have any hiddensuperstars! Free Run is a bit of amonkey but capable of picking upanother race this season.

What ambitions do you have inracing? To train a runner in the CheltenhamFoxhunters with Andrew riding.

What are your favourite coursesand meetings and why?High Easter is the best track in EastAnglia. Simon Marriage does afantastic job with the fences and thetrack and getting a crowd in. It is ashame there is only one meeting there.

What do you consider to thebiggest challenges for trainers? At the moment my biggest challenge istrying to buy a reasonably pricedmaiden!

What developments do you thinkwould benefit the sport in future?I think there should be races framedfor the more moderate horses fromunder Rules. There are plenty ofaffordable horses that have won a raceunder Rules, but between the flagsthere aren't enough races that they canbe competitive in. I also think we needto accept that professional trainers arerunning horses in Points. Perhaps weshould allow professional trainers, andproperly police who is training whichhorses, and then be able to framesome races in which professionaltrainers can't run.

RIDER PROFILEKATE GOWING

Every year a new band of hopefulsjoin the ranks of those making theirdebut between the flags, with varyingdegrees of competence, but there arealways a promising few who catch theeye.

Among the latter group in 2014 was16-year-old Kate Gowing, whose fourrides marked her out as one of themost able newcomers on the EastAnglian circuit for some time.

Her first appearance, at High Easter, saw her blundered out of Teeiygee'ssaddle on the second circuit whenchasing the leader, and her otherattempts, on the same horse, wereagain characterised by her willingnessto get in the thick of the action for aslong as her mount was able."Whatever I did, I was determined notto come off again," she laughed.

This season has started in the samevein, with two positively ridden placedefforts, in useful company, onCarpincho. She has yet to ride awinner, but it will be a surprise if shefails to do so before the campaign isout, although all Carpincho's bestform has been in sub-three mile trips.

Kate, who comes from a farmingfamily - her father Nick also doescontract farming, and in all looks after2,000 acres - competed in tetrathlonfor the North Norfolk Pony Club, andshe enjoyed success in Pony Racingbefore graduating to Point-to-Points.

She started riding out for CarolineFryer in 2012, and fits in equestrianactivity with her studies at NorwichHigh School, where she is preparingfor ‘A' levels in business, sport andpsychology, all of which could beextremely useful if she achieves her

eventual aim of becoming an amateurrider/assistant trainer in a professionalyard!

Her goal for the present campaign isto win the East Anglian novicechampionship, and she is also hopingto get a Category ‘A' licence to allowher to ride in amateur races underRules. She will not be hindered by lackof fitness, as in addition to riding shedoes plenty of running and also playshockey for Dereham when timeallows.

She finds it frustrating that there areso few openings for spare rides in herarea. "All the yards have got theirregular jockeys," she explained. Beingable to travel further afield wouldcertainly help - she is currently havingdriving lessons, and has a Peugeot vanready and waiting to have the ‘L' platesremoved.

SCENE & HEARDTiverton at Chipley Park

"I've always told [owner] John Symesthat this is the best horse he's got, buthe doesn't believe me!" laughedRichard Woollacott, after the JohnMathias-ridden Parkam Jack haddefied a 19-month absence to land theMixed Open at the expense of lastyear's winner and odds-on favouriteCertain Flight.

A former winner of two Points, aNewton Abbot novice hunter chaseand a Worcester maiden hurdle underWoollacott's trainership, but nowrepresenting wife Kayley's Pointingstring, the Grape Tree Road geldingshowed no signs of ring-rustinessdespite an extended break owed to aleg problem, and having been allowedto switch off in rear up to halfwayfound plenty for driving to fend offhis closest pursuer by an eventual half-length margin.

"He always wins driven out, but that'sjust him!" Woollacott continued. "Infairness he's always been our bestwork horse at home, but he doesn'talways do it on the track for you. Wedidn't do anything special to get himfit after his leg, just a lot of galloping,

and we knew that was enough. Weknew he was fit for today."

Although already proven over Rulesfences by expedient of that NewtonAbbot victory, a return for ParkamJack to Richard's side of the yard anytime soon is by no means assured. "Weknew he was good enough to be worthgiving a year off and bringing back forthis job [Pointing], but we won't goback under Rules except perhaps for ahunter chase. We know exactly whathe is - he's a solid 112-rated sort ofhorse, and no better."

Five winners for the season for KayleyWoollacott quickly became six, asLarkhill Restricted dead-heater Jepecksprung himself from Intermediateclass at the first time of asking with avictory rather more emphatic than thatrecorded in Wiltshire three weeksearlier. Momentarily under pressure

approaching three out, JamieThomas's mount produced anirresistible renewed effort between thefinal two fences to win going away.

Success here qualified the son ofWesterner for both the Connolly's RedMills and Exeter RacecourseIntermediate Finals at a stroke, butthoughts are yet to turn to either targetin earnest - perhaps unsurprisingly, coming as they would nearly sixmonths into a campaign that started atthe season-opening Black Forest Clubfixture.

Kayley Woollacott ventured further:"He's still only six and we wouldn'twant to over-race him. Even this was aquick reappearance after Larkhill, butthere wouldn't have been anywhere togo with him for a while after as he hasto go right-handed." A trip toBuckfastleigh was briefly considered inthe winner's enclosure, before those

“He’s still only six and we wouldn’twant to over-race him.”

Kayley Woollacott, Trainer, Jepeck

present remembered that track had ofcourse switched from Jepeck'sfavoured clockwise configuration toanticlockwise in 2013.

Kayley could confirm one definiteimmediate plan, however - "Keepinghim from Richard!"

A well-backed favourite, Jepeck wasnot unfancied by the Woollacottraiding party - and one in particular."Our head lad said on the way downwe'd have a double today - this horseand one other", smiled KayleyWoollacott, adding: "Unfortunately hegot the other one wrong!"

By a process of elimination, that"other one" could only have beenRobin Will, a warm order to add theHunt Members contest to the OpenMaiden success he gained on his oneprevious course visit two years ago.

The cutest of waiting rides from JohnMathias reaped less reward than itdeserved, however, as the combinationof a limited response off the bridleafter two out and a last-fence errorcondemned the half-brother of GrandNational aspirant Unioniste to a four-length defeat at the hands of BlindingLights, whose winning rider MattHampton doubled his score for theseason in the process.

"I was hunting with the Tivertonyesterday, and they were asking mewhat I was running in the race",beamed successful owner-trainer MarySanderson afterwards, "and I told

them it was Blinding Lights. ‘Will itwin?' they asked, and I said it would bea blinding shame if he doesn't!"

Not that it was always a certainty thatthe 10-year-old son of a niece ofBurrough Hill Lad would still beholding a place in the Sanderson stringlong enough to record this latestvictory for her. "The girls in the yardlove him, but I nearly sold him lastyear - he didn't pass the vet, though. There's nothing wrong with him now,"recalled the Calverleigh-based formerpublican, who further advised thatBlinding Lights was "never 100%"during a 2013-14 campaign temperedby issues with backside muscles and anabscess in the mouth.

A neck second to Turthen under thesame rider in the 2013 renewal of thesame race, having made every yard inthe hands of the now-conditionalKieran Edgar twelve months beforethat, Blinding Lights' successconstituted an eighth in the TivertonMembers for Sanderson in just 15seasons.

However, the gelding still has someway to go to emulate former stablestar Jabiru, winner of the same racefive times between 2001 and 2006; andnor is he ever likely to effect quite thesame sort of boilover as achieved by2008 scorer Hollandia, winner of athree-runner renewal at odds of 50-1!

No less celebrated a finisher in theMembers race following a whollyrespectable 27l fifth on Weston Lodge,52-year-old first-time rider AlexMuirhead returned to the paddock to arapturous reception from friends andwell-wishers... and to the challenge cup(swiftly filled with champagne) for thefirst resident in the TivertonFoxhounds country to pass the post.

Resplendent in tartan-apeing red andgreen diamond-patterned silks duringthe race and the ceremonial headgearand coat of his beloved City OfExeter Pipes and Drums after it, theveteran debutant - a chandler by trade- had not wanted for expert tutelagefrom the likes of Rodi Greene and(brother-in-law) Jamie Osborne aheadof this realisation of a long-helddream.

Robin Will's reverse in the opener wasthe first of two for John Mathias inthe opening couple of races, withjoint-favourite Shanks A Bunchproducing the shortest-lived of threatsbefore weakening right out under theWelshman in the Restricted thatfollowed.

That could hardly have lain in starkercontrast to fellow jolly, the WillBiddick-partnered Bien Connu, whoseeffort in repelling Mangans Turn (JoshNewman) to lead home a Jack Barber-trained one-two betrayed no evidencewhatsoever of the mammoth 38-month absence which had preceded it.

Last seen running away with a ThamesValley Club Maiden at the sadly now-dormant Tweseldown in December2011, and turning out here for onlythe third time in his life, theBienamado gelding's effortunderstandably had connectionsbeaming afterwards. "That's verypleasing. He'd not been quite right anyprevious year that we'd brought himback in, but he's been better this timearound, having come back inSeptember," explained Barber, thecurrent National Trainer'sChampionship leader. "He had a leg,and it's just taken time with him -firing, a long time off, and a lot ofwork."

In light of Bien Connu's protractedprevious absence, it would not surprisewere short-term aspirations for thenine-year-old not to have extendedbeyond returning cold legs thefollowing morning.

Present to shout on John Mathiasfrom the sidelines, win or lose, proudfather Philip also found time to imparta little further information on the newcourse at Llwyndau Farm, the venuefor this year's Banwen Miners Point onMonday, May 4th following the sale ofthe previous Pentreclwydau site.

"[BHA course inspector] Peter Hobbsand I walked the course the otherweek, and it's very encouraging - thegrass cover will be good, and it's reallya better site than we could have daredhope for at such short notice. Thelandowners are completely on board, and so proactive in getting things inplace between each planning meeting."Mathias explained of a site locatedaround five miles west ofPentreclywdau.

As to the layout? "It's sort of a d-shaped 1m1f circuit, and quite flat, with a straight home run and a bend inthe back straight. I'd think it wouldlend itself better to being left-handed,but that's to be decided."

Fifth place was the best that SilverToken could manage in the MixedOpen on this card twelve monthsearlier, but the combination this timearound of a drop back in class, plusthe assistance of emerging talentHarry Cobden, proved just what theSilver Patriarch gelding required toland a first Pointing success in over

two years in the Dodson & HorrellPPORA Novice Riders' event. Sentcloser at the start of the final circuit, the 10-year-old grey finally wore downthe gallant Ladyvie (Hannah Welch) inthe final 75 yards, following a goodtussle over the final two fences.

For the Lydford-on-Fosse basedCobden, 16, victory here represented afirst success between the flags on onlyhis third attempt, as well as analtogether happier experience than aslip and unseat from Cock Of TheRock on his Pointing debut atWadebridge two weeks earlier. "Hewas hopping mad after that," recalledself-described "long suffering mum"Sarah, proudly watching on along withthe rider's grandmother Gill and Rulestrainer Anthony Honeyball.

Active in pony racing since the age ofnine, and the winner of - by his ownreckoning - no fewer than 33 events inthat sphere, Cobden schooled atSexey's in Bruton until turning 16 lastNovember. "He came out of schoolearly - you'll have the Schools Serviceon us!" laughed Sarah. In actual fact

“He came out of school early - you’llhave the Schools Service on us!”

her son remains in education, combining home tutorials with fiveweekday morning shifts for principalemployer Honeyball and Wednesdayafternoons spent riding out for DavidBrace.

Cobden has plenty for which to thankthe last-named, in particular; "He waspony racing in Ireland last October, when Mr Brace approached him andasked if he'd like to work for him,"Sarah continued. Already qualified byBrace this term with the Llangeinor, the well-established duo of Cock OfThe Rock (jointly owned by Harry andgranny) and Silver Token (owned bythe current trainer of both horses,Honeyball's partner Rachael Green)look well bought if intended to helpthe rookie realise his stated ambitionof becoming the champion NoviceRider - between them, the duowithstood 19 hunt race outings in2013-14.

Another partner of a licensed trainerto oblige on the afternoon was PatBryant, handler of the Pointers at hisand Caroline Keevil's Motcombe baseand on the mark here with the PhilipThomas-ridden General Girling indivision one of the Open Maiden.

Winless in 15 starts under Rules forKeevil and latterly rated as low as 73over hurdles, the son of GeneralGambul has taken a far greater shineto the discipline of Pointing andentered this contest on the back ofthree second places from as many

recent starts, two up on SalisburyPlain. "If he can go that close atLarkhill, he ought to win something,"laughed breeder Jane Girling, presentto see the homebred she has loanedback to the yard's racing club for theseason break his duck at last.

"He jumped well enough over hurdles, but we tried him once in a chase andhe was much too careful," continuedKeevil, adding: "He's also not alwaysknown for his resolution, but heshowed a lot of guts today." Thatcomment could just as readily apply tohis partner, as the crowding fromeventual runner-up Just Imagine It upthe run-in cowed neither GeneralGirling nor Philip Thomas out ofconverting the winning opportunity.Formerly based with John JosephMurphy and Caroline Hobbs beforejoining the Keevil-Bryant axis, 30-year-old Thomas was recording a thirdPointing victory.

"I'm happy with that - it's the idealstart," summarised Poundsgatehandler Simon Partridge after a cleverride by Darren Edwards secured stablestar Lucette Annie the TBACountryside Alliance Mares' andFillies' event for the second yearrunning.

The competition had a thinner lookabout it with last year's runner-upPopaway sent to contest theafternoon's equivalent contest atHigham this time around, and the 4-9favourite was not overly taxed in

recording a clever 2.5l success over theHannah Welch-partnered RomneyMarsh (the rider's second runner's-upfinish inside 40 minutes).

A winner every season since 2010, andrunning in the colours this year ofClare West as well as longstandingowner Janet Humphrey, the daughterof Alflora made light of conditions(officially good to soft) just a touchdrier than preferred. "I'd like to take ina hunter chase with her again thisseason, but she'd need cut in theground for that," Partridge reasoned,"though we do get away with it onquicker ground in Points." A ninthcareer visit to her local stompingground of Buckfastleigh is in theoffing before anything else, however:"It comes nicely for her in threeweeks' time, so I don't suppose we'llsee her out again before then."

Lucette Annie won't be the onlyrepresentative from the Partridge yardbetween the flags this season. "I have afive-year-old youngster called SandyPark set to debut in Maidens - he'sbeen following Lucette Annie up thegallops. Blue Abbey [an 11-year-oldmaiden half-brother to Asian Mazeand Quantitativeeasing] is still with usand still chasing her up the gallops, too!"

"I am so chuffed with that ride - that'sjust what she needed," enthused ownerJulia Batho on greeting the returningMidnights'mischief, punched out byJames Jeavons to land the second leg

of the Open Maiden at the expense ofodds-on shot Porlock Bay (DarrenEdwards).

Head girl to Alastair Ralph this season,Batho had insisted to her current bossthat Midnights'mischief, a mare she'dacquired in 2011 as a three-year-old,made the trip up to the DowntonEstate north of Ludlow with her aspart of the arrangement. "I said, ‘I'llbring my horse with me if that'salright, but she isn't very good.' She's abit better than that now!"

A tenure with Nick Williams hadpreceded the move to Ralph, butwhilst there Batho struggled to get herdaughter of Midnight Legend fitenough to do herself justice on theracetrack, as perhaps evidenced bypulled-up efforts at Kilworthy andTrebudannon last spring.

Before that, the 37-year-old hadworked for Tor Collins prior to thelatter's own move to Shropshire fromthe Sandhurst Area, and whilst basedthere had recorded her one win as arace-rider in the 2009 HampshireHunt Members race at HackwoodPark on Lord Alpha, a horse shetrained herself for Anthony Ward-Thomas. The Batho connection toCollins endures up to a point throughMidnights'mischief, whose dam PipesA'Calling foaled her after winning a

Godstone Mares' Maiden for thathandler in 2007.

Although the commencement of theWelsh Borders Area season remains agood few weeks off, a busy time isassured for Batho and all working forAlastair Ralph before then, as the nowformer assistant trainer to Henry Dalybegins to unleash the yard's big gunssuch as John Corbet Cup thirdFollowing Dreams. "Alastair's gotabout 11 or 12 Pointers in this year; afew young ones, but not too manymaidens. One less maiden now, infact!"

Midnights'mischief was a first ride forthe Ralph yard this season for JamesJeavons, 24, and a second winner forhim all told. The Sarah-Jayne Davies/Jeremy Mahot-trained UptonCenturion in a PPORA Novice Ridersrace at Brampton Bryan last April wasthe first, and he hopes to be riding forthat operation as well as for HannahJames and for Ralph this term.

Porlock Bay's second toMidnights'mischief thus left PointingPlus columnist and Attheraces hostLuke Harvey having fared two placesbetter than brother Dominic's HuntMembers fourth Lightening Jack, butat the same time still bereft of thevictory he'd hoped to tease out of hisDr Massini gelding before taking in askiing holiday a few days later.

No matter. "I love this sport, andhailing from barely five miles away Ilove being here at Chipley," Harveybeamed whilst warming down PorlockBay in the box park after racing. "Youcouldn't get me to go racing on a dayoff, but I'd do this any day of theweek. This is the longest I've gonewithout a beer all day, though!"

Prior to watching his chargeTucumcari finish unplaced in theIntermediate, handler NormanThomas had clasped your writer by thehand on their first meeting for nearlythree years and exclaimed, "I thoughtyou were dead!" It's always nice to beable to dispel a rumour...
