The short birding span that I had during my recent visit to Beijing opens me to a world of dedicated andenthusiastic birders whom know their surrounding areas extremely well. Despite the coldness of the early north-ern spring, I was shown very well several species that I had only brief encounter in the past and in addition 18 lifers, happily stacking my life list to 4346. The success of this trip paves the way to my long-awaited birding venture toMainland China.

The past winter is truly fruitful for birders in Beijing,

a few “good species” were recorded, including Ibisbill andSolitary Snipe in the mountainous area, Lapland Longspurand different species of larks in the plain area, JapaneseWaxwing and Brown-eared Bulbul in the city parks. Nomatter whether it was “a big year for birds” as some people’ssaying, the diligence of the local birders and their progressin bird ID are certainly reasons behind the harvest.

Spring is coming. I am surprised that the DaurianRedstart continues to stay on the balcony. But another coldweather discloses this secret. What an intelligent birdindeed! Finally, she leaves us to the north. Can I watch herwith her husband next autumn?

Black Bird, Light-vented Bulbul, Eurasian Cuckoo and

Tree Sparrow are familiar birds in my life. They havecompanied with me since I was a child. Now they are goodfriends of my daughter and I. We like to appreciate theirsongs and behaviors in our spare time.

Three species of pelicans are to be found in the wild inChina, but only the Dalmatian Pelican can be regularlyfound at known sites (mainly the wintering grounds inGuangdong and Hong Kong). Migration route of this spe-cies from the lower Yangtze region to their believed breed-ing ground in western Mongolia still remains as mystery. With more birdwatching activities in the field in China. Itis hoped that more reports of this species could be compiledin the near future. Cooperation between conservation or-ganizations and authorities in China and Mongolia is es-sential to the future survival of this species, which is reach-ing a low figure of around 30 birds.

The other pelican, Spot-billed Pelican, was a commonresident in southeastern China until the 19th century. Noconfirmed report of this species since the 1960s and it mighthave been extinct in China, although some birds mightwander in Guangxi and Yunnan from neighboring SouthEast Asian countries.
