In a world where everything is interconnected, small grants to the right people and causes have big impact. Your support helps grassroots groups to fight harder for the environment, human rights, and social justice.

As I visited several rural Kenyan villages last summer, I saw a landscape that spanned time. Hot sun beat down on hut roofs with solar panels. Cisterns collected rainwater for drinking and irrigation. Native, drought-resistant crops had been planted in raised kitchen gardens. Communities were returning to traditional agricultural practices that will provide food security in an uncertain climate future.

Village women greeted us with hope, dancing and singing, sharing stories of how recent trainings—part of a project funded by Global Greengrants Fund—had improved their lives. One small grant had addressed climate change, energy, food sustainability, and water scarcity. Local women integrated new technology with traditional wisdom to create systemic change where they lived.

In spite of a grim, worldwide economic recession, Global Greengrants Fund held its course in 2010 and 2011. We are extremely grateful to our loyal and new donors who invested in grassroots environmental work in the Global South. We are thankful to the dedicated advisors who channeled funding to communities such as those mentioned above and throughout this annual report. Together, you have turned philanthropy upside down.

In what follows, we focus on a handful of groups that our grants have supported. Each spread features connections between two specific issues and tells a story of impact from the local to the global scale.

Of course, everything is interconnected.

Dear friends,

Biodiversity Indigenous Rights

Grantee: Mas Kagin Tapani means ‘sea guardian.’ The organization protects the marine life in the Bismarck and Solomon Seas and the rights of indigenous communities in the region.

Worldwide, 82 indigenous tribes used our small grants last year to lead projects for environmental health and justice.

A recent study found that a marine reserve created by a Mexican grantee has seen a 460% increase in the number of fish.

The leatherback sea turtle is endangered. Indigenous leaders recognized that the practice of harvesting leatherback eggs for food contributed to the turtle’s decline in numbers. They established an organization to work with local villages to change this practice.

As the organization brought communities together to develop plans for conservation, their environmental efforts had a ripple effect. They began to see and address social needs, including community development and income generation. The group soon took on other challenges, such as advocating against deep-sea mining off their coast.

What began as protecting an endangered species has since become a broad effort to create more prosperous indigenous communities along the north coast of Papua New Guinea.

As our planet’s cultural and biological diversity decline at rapid rates, local people are taking action to reverse this trend.

Often when indigenous rights are threatened, so are natural resources. Global Greengrants Fund channels grants to groups that are raising indigenous voices and encouraging community-led conservation.

Our grants strengthen indigenous movements and help them assert their rights and views in project and policy development. To protect biodiversity, our grantees are monitoring illegal poaching, changing destructive consumption habits, and safeguarding threatened habitats.

LOCAL ACTION to protect our planet and its people

Six of the world’s seven species of marine turtles live around Papua New Guinea. The country is one of the most culturally diverse places on Earth, with more than 850 languages spoken. Both the turtles and the indigenous cultures are threatened.

Saving endangered species enables indigenous communities to thrive

Small-scale, sustainable agriculture provides food security and nutritious diets. Our grantees have trained thousands of families around the world on healthy, resilient farming techniques. They have established seed banks and started farmers’ markets to sell local products.

Grantee: Malabika Datta Saha and Sahanivasa are working at the local and national levels, respectively, to promote healthy food and communities in India.

Last year, our grants enabled 75+ communities across the globe to move towards food security.

Sahanivasa’s efforts have educated 1 million people in 1,800 communities in India about the dangers of pesticides.

Organic farming also eliminates toxic pesticides, which, along with pollution from resource extraction and waste disposal, make our lands and waters unsafe. From direct action to international policy advocacy, our grantees are addressing these threats and creating a healthier planet.

LOCAL LEADERSHIP for stronger communities and healthier environments

From the backyard to parliament, making food and the environment safer

Malabika Datta Saha is a young activist from West Bengal—a region afflicted with poverty and hunger. She gathered women from a small tribal community to improve food security through organic farming. They planted ten small gardens to grow healthy foods, including spinach and eggplant.

Across India, a national organization led a campaign to raise awareness among farmers, consumers, and policymakers about the dangers of pesticides in agriculture. The group submitted a petition to the government to ban endosulfan, a toxic pesticide. They have shown how these chemicals degrade environmental and human health.

The planet is already under stress, and the world’s population has surpassed 7 billion people. As governments grapple with top-down environmental policy, local leaders are pursuing immediate and lasting strategies to care for communities and resources.

Grantee: Eco Development Foundation works in rural and urban communities across Uganda to improve environmental management and alleviate poverty.

Climate Justice Women’s Voices

With new energy efficient stoves, women in rural Uganda now only need to collect a third of the fuelwood to feed their families.

Our advisors recommended 57% more climate-related grants than the previous year.

A project in eastern Uganda set out to address the local impacts of climate change. A grassroots organization educated villagers about its effects and taught ways to adapt and survive.

In the process, local women saw how their acts of environmental stewardship eased the burden of caring for their families.

Planting trees improved watersheds and soil quality. It also reduced the distance women have to walk for firewood.

New home gardens with compost pits will provide food security during drought and give mothers a source of healthy food and financial savings.

LOCAL SOLUTIONS tackle our greatest challenges and engage those most affected

New energy efficient stoves, which women were trained to make and market, have reduced deforestation and carbon emissions. Indoor air quality has also improved, along with family health, and the women have a new skill and source of income.

In 2011 natural disasters cost a record $265 billion. Extreme drought in East Africa left millions without food or income. Women are unduly affected by climate change and natural disasters; they are also powerful stewards of local solutions.

From improving environmental health to generating sustainable sources of income to leading the call for justice, women across the globe are putting our small grants to use.

The growing threat of climate change has been matched by an increase in climate-related grants to fund mitigation efforts, policy advocacy, and adaptation strategies.

One project for climate adaptation changes the way of life for local women

Grantee: Oilwatch is a global network of organizations dedicated to reducing the negative impacts of oil and gas operations on people and the environment.

Water

Last year, we funded 156 projects to protect and improve access to clean water through our Aveda partnership.

An independent analysis of our impact in Ghana and Peru showed that flexible small grants, given at the right time, help mining-affected communities defend their environment.

LOCAL VOICES call for justice and a better future

In a symbolic gesture to pay for the park’s protection, a grassroots organization launched the “My Future Yasuní” campaign. The group distributed piggy banks to schoolchildren and spoke to classes about importance of Yasuní. The kids painted the pigs with drawings of trees and rivers, and then they marched to the capitol to deliver the piggy banks to the president. “Here, take what I have. Take the coins in my piggy bank to save my planet’s precious places.”

While the prospect of oil development in Yasuní remains, each voice in defense of the natural reserve strengthens the grassroots movement to protect it.

The Global South has seen thousands of oil spills, but when the damaged Deep Horizon rig spewed oil into the Gulf of Mexico, the realities of oil development became real and emotional for many who live safely removed from its harmful impacts.

Countless communities cope with the negative effects of oil development, along with those of mining and gas exploration, everyday. Our grantees are leading campaigns to call for environmental justice and protect human rights.

Water sources are particularly vulnerable to contamination from oil, as well as the toxic chemicals and byproducts of extracting and processing raw materials. We are funding projects to prevent and reduce water pollution, to challenge practices that exhaust water resources, and to promote access to clean water.

Painting piggy banks to stop oil drilling and protect the rainforest

For three decades, oil operations in the Ecuadorian Amazon put 18 billion gallons of toxic wastewater into the rainforest. Now, the government wants to drill for oil in Yasuní National Park—an incredibly biodiverse region with pristine waters and isolated indigenous tribes.
