PIM launches PIM Air, celebrates Thailand’s National Aviation Day 13 January 2016

In opening the center, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sompop Manarungsan, PIM President, said PIM emphasized on producing human resource to serve the demand of industries by instilling the PIM DNA. He added, “Our DNA carries three unique characteristics: To excel, to be brave, and to be good (at what you do). PIM Air is a practical place for our students to learn, which deepens their understanding of aviation business manage-ment.” Mr. Vichien Chuengviroj, CP ALL, Ltd. Senior Vice President - Corporate Asset and Facilities Management, shared that by investing

40M THB in PIM Air, CP ALL allows the Institute a tangible way to practice work-based education, providing learners a real atmosphere of the airport and cabin. PIM Air - Aviation Business Training Center is comprised of mock-up plane, check-in counters, security check-point, boarding area, and a waiting area. The main attraction of the center is the cabin simulator, which includes a pilot room, first class cabin, business class and economy areas, and spa-cious back galley.

Forum on the sustainability of modern agriculture in AEC draws full house 22 January 2016 Hosted by PIM’s Faculty of Innovative Agricul-tural Management together with the Business Incubation Center, this highly anticipated forum was graced by Mr. Supachai Chearavanont, CEO & President of True Corporation Public Company and Vice-Chairman of Charoen Pokphand Group Co. Ltd., as keynote speaker. He spoke on the importance of harnessing management skills and inventiveness when

operating modern farming systems. A round table discussion followed, carrying the theme “Offensive and Defensive Strategy in AEC,” chaired by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sompop Manarungsan, PIM President together with Mr. Kraisin Wongsurakrai, Board Member, Board of Trade of Thailand; and Mr. Chai Vacharong, D.V.M., an independent scholar.

Diplomatic Connections Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines 15 January 2016 H.E. Mary Jo A. Bernardo-Aragon commended PIM’s innovative spirit and the progressive nature of work-based learning that the Institute utilizes. She mentioned this technique helps ensure that gradu-ates have an understanding of varying roles within an organization, which is important when transitioning to assume the role of an effective supervisor. She provided advice concerning linkages with the Philippines and possible activities that the Philippine mission to Thailand and CP ALL - PIM could organize together in the near future.

Embassy of Malaysia 1 February 2016 Mr. Mohammad Faizal Razali, Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission expressed his sincere wishes for more collaboration between Thai institutions and Malaysia. He provided CP ALL and PIM with a brief history of how the bond between Malaysia and Thailand was forged decades ago. He also gave some pertinent advice on suitable universities and organizations that PIM could pursue. PIM’s Dr. Usanee Kulintornprasert mentioned how much CP ALL and PIM would be honored to support any relevant activities the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia could be planning at the moment.

Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany 16 March 2016 H.E. Mr. Peter Prügel, Ambassador expressed his felicitations on how PIM has taken inspiration and localized German education system. He added that the scale of operations at PIM is commendable and looks forward to increased activities with Thailand’s corporate university. PIM’s Mr. Pornvit Phatcharin-tanakul, VP for Academic Affairs thanked H.E., adding that it would be an honor to contribute to the German mission to Thailand, particular in the field of education.

Mr. Jan Spiler, Head of Commercial and Economic Section, Embassy of the Czech Republic, met with PIM and CP ALL representatives to continue dis-cussion on possible linkages with higher education institutions located in the central European nation. Mr. Jan extended assistance by identifying four initial universities that may be open for international aca-demic cooperation, to which the PIM and CP ALL representatives expressed utmost gratitude.

Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia and IBI Darmajaya visit PIMDr. Yunardi, Education and Culture Attaché, Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Thailand together with the representatives of IBI Darmajaya visited PIM to determine if there are possible areas for academic collaboration with Thailand’s Corporate University on 27 January 2016.

This visit was arranged for IBI Darmajaya upon the recommendation of the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Thailand. Dr. Yunardi was accompanied by IBI representatives Mrs. Rahmalia Syahputri, Head, International Affairs; Ms. Desisonia Lilia H, Staff, International Affairs; and Ms. Supit Thevamit, Education Section, Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Thailand.

Dr. Yunardi commended PIM for the interesting programs developed to aide young people to become future managers and leaders of organization and companies. He added that it would be beneficial for Indonesian students to experience PIM’s learning model through academic exchanges and internships.

“Since MBA programs in Indonesia and Thailand carry similar core courses, perhaps PIM and Indone-sian universities such as IBI Darmajaya can look toinnovative ways to work together such as cred-it exchanges as a degree option,” he concluded.

Ms. Desisonia Lilia H expressed her interest in the corporate mentorship, high number of company visits, and PIM’s focus on oriental wisdom. “It is pleasing to see that PIM and IBI Darmajaya have similar approaches. Entrepreneurship is central to all programs at IBI Darmajaya, much like PIM,” she added. Dr. Usanee Kulintornprasert, Director, Office of Inter-national Relations expressed gratitude towards the group for selecting to visit PIM; noting the success of previous joint scholarly engagements undertaken by Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand which has now been refocused to encourage increased mobility in the region. Dr. Veerisa Chotiyaputta and Dr. Pithoon Thanabordeekij from PIM’s International College also participated in the meeting.

Following his keynote speech on Sustainable Animal Production: Pigs and Poultry as part of the on going “Prasert Poongkuman” lecture series, Dr. Martin Scholten was given a brief overview of the CP Group and PIM by Dr. Usanee Kulintornprasert, Director, Office of International Relations. She related how the beginnings of PIM were rooted in CP’s commitment to developing skilled staff which has now evolved into a mission to contribute to Thailand’s overall education system.

Mr. Siam Chocksawangwong, Vice President for Administrative Affairs said that he would very much like to learn from such a reputable seat of higher learning as WU. Dr. Martin expressed gratitude for hosting the knowledge exchange session, saying that WU is also eager to learn from PIM and looks to how the two institutions can grow together.

Dr. Martin explained that WU the Netherland’s only agri-food university and is ranked first worldwide in this field. He added that WU that functions under the Ministry of Economic Affairs which allows the university to pursue and conduct academics and research in line with relevant industry concerns. “PIM’s close association with CP Foods is a clear indicator that the Institute has the same way of thinking as WU,” he noted.

PIM’s Mr. Phornvit Phacharintanakul, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Somrote Komolavanij, Assistant to the President for Academic Affairs also participated in the discussions. Session topics included opportunities to develop curricula, faculty and student exchange, research activities that could need to more joint programs.

Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University, Germany reconnects with PIMProf. Dr. Bianka Lichtenberger, Vice President, Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW), Germany visits PIM to re-establish previously instigated activities with PIM on 5 February 2016. Prof. Bianka shared her deep experience and knowledge in industry and practice-integrated learn-ing in Germany and the region more broadly. She expressed interest in developing an active relationship with PIM, noting that the alliance could prove advantageous to both institutions and provide more options for faculty, staff, and students to refine their knowledge and skills, while ensuring relevance to shifting industry needs.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Somrote Komolavanij, Assistant to the President for Academic Affairs, said that PIM has a lot to learn from DHBW and perhaps can project future success based on DHBW’s best practices. Prof. Bianka said that DHBW is willing to share and work with institutions carrying similar philosophies. Possible academic collaboration could include the development of degree options and faculty/student exchanges through the study abroad program and government

CP ALL and PIM pay courtesy visit to Yangon-based Myanmar CP LivestockCP ALL and PIM VP, Mr. Siam Chocksawangwong led an executive team to Yangon to visit prospec-tive partners highlighted by a trip to Myanmar CP Livestock Co. Ltd. (MCPL) on 4 February 2016.

This meeting was organized as response to prior executive visits from MCPL to PIM to learn about PIM’s education model. Discussions covered pos-sibilities for Myanmar staff to continue professional development programs and graduate studies at PIM and short courses focusing on customer relations. Mr. Phichet Sivasri, Vice Chairman, MCPL chaired the

Mr. Sirapob expressed his keen interest and indicated plans to send staff to enrol in PIM, particularly in the international MBA (iMBA) and leadership programs.

Accompanied by Mr. Wayne Johnson, Head of Sites and Internationalisation; Ms. Maureen van der Meché, Senior Project Manager - International Branch Campuses; Ms. Sandy Loup, Academic Dean of Stenden University, International Branch Campus, Bangkok; and Ms. Agnes Niehof, Chief Representative Officer, Nuffic Neso Thailand, Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Mr. Leendert expressed that he is looking forward to being a part of what PIM is doing and hopes to learn from one another, particularly in intercultural development.

PIM President, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sompop Mana- rungsan, who is also a recipient of graduate education in the Netherlands, noted PIM’s keen interest in establishing closer cooperation in various ways especially in teaching, researching, and intercultural development.

Mr. Wayne added that PIM and Stenden have many similarities including the research approaches in each programs due to their orientation towards industry relevance. He also highlighted that Stenden has received recognition due to its attractiveness to international students, creating a new dimen-sion that PIM may find useful as the Institute moves to wards internationalization. After the discussion, the delegation was given a tour of one of CP ALL’s distribution centers at Bang Bua Thong, which serves an integral role for the management of the 7-Eleven food convenience stores.

Mr. Lester expressed his admiration for PIM and Thailand in general, stating that there is a lot to learn from this country. Mr. Siam Chocksawangwong, Vice President, Administrative Affairs thanked Mr. Lester, noting that working with AUT in the future could help both institutions contribute to develop a vibrant and global environment for students in New Zealand and Thailand. Also attending were representatives from the Faculty of Liberal Arts, Faculty of Management Sciences (Hotel and Tourism Management), and Faculty of Food Business Management. Following a productive discussion, possible programs and activities were identified for 2016 including a pilot visiting scholar and lecturer program applicable to both PIM and AUT,

opportunities for e-learning particularly with PIM’s 12 distance learning centers, and linkages to administer internships for hotel and tourism management students. Mr. Lester added that the PIM’s short courses offerings may prove to be very interesting to many students matriculating at AUT since awareness on Thai business and culture is on a rise. A continuation of the discussion was held on 9 March 2016 wherein PIM interacted further with represent-atives from AUT’s Faculty of Culture and Society specifically the School of Languages and Culture and the School of Hospitality & Tourism, and the School of Education.

California State University East Bay commends how PIM thinks beyond education Dr. Raymond Wallace, Executive Director, International Programs, California State University East Bay (CSUEB), United States explores PIM’s education model and industry-networking focus during his visit on 17 February 2016.

During the session Dr. Raymond remarked how PIM is integrated in the economy in a way no other universities can, particularly in Thailand and China. “PIM is special because you think beyond education,” Dr. Raymond said in appreciation of PIM’s orientation towards preparing people specifically for employment.

Sharing of experiences in implementing international activities and identification of possible collabora-tion were covered during the meeting. PIM’s Dr. Usanee Kulintornprasert wrapped up the session by extending assistance should CSUEB wish to expand networks in areas and countries where PIM is acti vely working in.

The series of discussion centered on the possibilities of academic collaboration; and covered explorative inquiries on faculty and student exchange, joint re-search, executive training, and leadership programs. The visiting team from RMIT was comprised of Dr. Nuttawuth Muenhjohn, Honours Program Coordi-nator; Dr. Alan Montague, Course Coordinator for Human Resource Development; and Dr. Chin Eang Ong, Lecturer and Course Coordinator for Business IT and Supply Chain.

Following the morning session at PIM, the RMIT delegation visited the CP ALL Headquarters in Silom, Bangkok to meet with Mr. Korsak Chairasmi- sak, Chairman of the Executive Committee. The group was given the opportunity to discuss leadership and management principles with Mr. Korsak. Mr. Korsak has largely been credited with CP ALL’s worldwide recognition due to its innovativeness and agility.

Erasmus+ opportunities with Poland's Vincent Pol University

Led by Ms. Dorota Stefanek-Langham, Deputy Chancellor for International Studies, a delegation from Vincent Pol University in Lublin visited PIM on 15 March 2016. The three delegates were accompanied by Maneesida Hatthakij, Founder & CEO of AIM Intermed, and education consultancy

provider. Discussions covered possible official academic cooperation particularly in the field of tourism and hospitality, beginning with an opportunity for PIM students to study and intern in Poland, as hosted by VPU under the Erasmus+ program.

The graduate students showed interest in diverse areas including PIM’s innovative and intensive education model, CP ALL’s status as one of the most innovative companies in the world (Forbes 2015), its contribution to the real estate and construction sector, the 2011 flood impact to 7-Eleven’s sales and distribution, and solid waste management. Mr. Derek Thitsunathit from PIM’s International College facilitated a lively knowledge exchange covering CP’s blue ocean strategy, leading the students, who are mostly enrolled in engineering degrees, to be curious

about oriental wisdom in management, risk diver-sification, and marketing strategies. Many of the graduate students are representatives from some of Pakistan’s most prestigious universities such as National University of Sciences and Technology, University of Punjab, and COMSATS Institute of Information & Technology. Others represented multinational corporations such as Suzuki and several government agencies including the Higher Education Department and the Punjab Irrigation Department.

Initial discussion points covered both institutions’ commitment to internationality and relevance to Asia’s continuous booming economic growth. Dr. Usanee Kulintornprasert, Director, Office of Inter-national Relations briefly outlined PIM’s beginnings, emphasizing how CP ALL had aimed to develop a system to provide sustainable human resources

for the national operations of 7-Eleven. “Due to PIM’s creative approach to teaching and learn-ing, more from the general public are agreeing that preparing for future employment is not guar-anteed by merely passing examinations, added Mr. Pornvit Patcharintanakul, Vice President for Academic Affairs. Mr. Jai, who is also a sea-soned expert in financial institutions, indicated NUS Business School’s foci on attracting the brightest young minds and in turn developing leaders who are set to make a difference in the business sector, globally. He proceeded to share some signature programs that NUS Business School is currently implementing together with some of the world’s most influential business schools. Some potential programs and activities were outlined during the meeting including tapping on experts from both sides to conduct relevant case studies, joint research, and guest sessions and workshops.

Regents International School Pattaya sees bright future with an alliance with PIM A seven-member delegation from Regents International School Pattaya (RISP) visits PIM and discovers similar aspirations to improve young people’s lives on 29 February 2016. Led by Mr. lain Blaikie, Principal, RISP engaged in a discussion pivoting on high quality education, international mobility, and access. Dr. Usanee Kulin-tornprasert commended RISP’s commitment to academic rigor, evident in leavers who continue in top universities including University College London, University of California Berkeley, and Peking University. Dr. Tim Eaton, who handles recruitment, attributes RISP’s successes in part to the school’ s affiliation with Nord Anglia, a leading school organization that allows RISP students access to global brands such as The Juilliard School, one of the world’s prestigious performing arts conservatories.

PIM hosts 2-day short course for India’s Swayam Siddhi Institute of Management One-hundred thirty students from Mumbai-based Swayam Siddhi Institute of Management (SSIM) visited PIM to gain knowledge on Thai business, particularly the success of CP ALL’s 7-11 operations and Thai culture on 22-23 March 2016. The two-day program was comprised of lectures on marketing and management principles and company visits directly related to the topics discussed. The participants visited CP RAM Innovation Center - a subsidiary of CP ALL that produces frozen, chilled, and baked goods distributed in 7-Eleven stores domestically and exported to several countries and one of 7-Eleven’s distribution centers.

On welcoming the group, PIM’s Vice President for Administrative Affairs, Mr. Siam Chocksawangwong, narrated his previous visit to ZRIS, noting how impressed he was with the school’s management of international students. He added that he looks forward to further collaboration through exchange faculty and staff once Satit PIM, the Institute’s secondary school, opening in 2017. Mr. Zhou is also keen to develop

activities with PIM and offered to second faculty to PIM to teach Chinese language and culture. He added that he would be delighted to promote PIM’s new bachelor degree on international modern trade management (iMTM) in Zhejiang province. The group was accompanied by PIM’s educational consultant, Mr. Korsak Thamcharonkij.

Leading the group, Ms. Lim Poh Suan, Susan, School Principal, and ASIS expressed gratitude noting that ASIS uses similar approaches to PIM through an open education policy and integrated program approach. She was accompanied by Ms. Suvatinee Salee-on (Jackie), Mr. Haswan Sutanto, and Mr. Elvin Macatangay. Mr. Siam Chocksawangwong shared plans pertaining to PIM’s newest project called Satit

PIM, a secondary level school. He also warmly welcomed the group and invited them to see CP's production bases for C.P. Meiji and the Royal Umbrella Rice, both popular brands in Singapore. Ms. Susan also invited PIM faculty and staff to take part in ASIS’s annual international career fair as guest speakers who could impart invaluable knowledge on life after getting a degree and career paths at CP.

Hankuk University of Foreign Languages defines upcoming academic exchange program with PIM Faculty members from South Korea’s Hankuk University of Foreign Languages (HUFS) return to confirm details of this year’s academic collaboration programs on 14 January 2016.

Prof. Lee Byung Do, Head, Department of Inter-pretation and Translation expressed his delight to be back with peers at PIM and looks forward to beginning the academic exchange between HUFS and PIM scheduled in August 2016. He added that HUFS recently launched a new program, funded by HUFS central administration, which will enable more students to participate in 6-month student exchange

programs at PIM. Prof. Shin also extended a warm invitation for PIM to join the 50th anniversary celebrations of HUFS’ Department of Thai in October 2016. PIM’s Dean of the Faculty of Liberal Arts, Ms. Tipawan Apiwanworarat, chaired the session, often placing emphasis on effective teaching methods and accreditation details from both higher education institutions.

The delegation was led by Prof. Tomoko Yamazaki, Professor, Faculty of Education and Research Center for Disaster Mitigation, Iwate University and was comprised of Prof. Maki Itoh from Miyako Technical High School and students, Mr. Dai Sasaki and Mr. Hitoshi Tateshita. The knowledge session was premised on Prof. Tomoko’s opening state-ment saying, “We cannot stop tsunamis, but we can prepare the best we can and save our lives.” The

team then shared their ongoing project on disaster mitigation which has been developed over the past 11 years, together with the Morioka city government. Scale models are prepared every year and donated to municipalities in Iwate. The group proceeded to PIM’s partner high school, Kanaratbamrung-pathumthani School where they also they shared the current developments of their project.

Prof. Sun, Ming-Chih, NPU led the group of promising educators to intern at PIM’s Faculty of Liberal Arts and Faculty of Education. The seven s tudents are currently enrolled in programs at bachelor and master degree levels covering programs on early childhood education, teaching Chinese as a second language, and psychology and counselling.

This internship aims to provide a platform for the students to hone their skills in teaching Chinese as a second language with Thais and contribute to the overall mission of NPU to promote the applications

of Chinese culture through language courses. To prepare for the one month program, the students were provided a special orientation course which included sessions on Thai culture and an intensive course in survival Thai language.

On 12 February 2016, a culminating event was graced by Ms. Jill Lai, Education Attaché, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office. Members of PIM’s management team were also present to congratulate the interns upon their completion of the program.

Eight students from Japan’s Soka University embrace Thai business and culture PIM hosts a 4-week long short course program for Japan’s Soka University (SU) from February 7 2016.

The eight undergraduate students are currently enrolled in degrees in economics, law, international relations, and international liberal arts. The short course program was developed specifically for Soka University and is comprised of two parts: 1) academic and immersion activities, and 2) an internship at CP ALL and PIM.

During the first two weeks, the students had an opportunity to learn about Thai culture by cooking Thai food, desserts, and the famous Thai milk tea. They also attended academic lectures concurrently, learning from experts on topics ranging from modern trade and business in Thailand and participating in a basic Thai language course. The students visited several historical sites including Grand Palace, the Emerald Buddha Temple, Wat Pho (reclining Bud-dha), and Ayutthaya, the ancient capital of Thailand.

Company visits were also arranged so the partici-pants can grasp how international corporations operate in Thailand. They visited the following companies: Khao C.P., a rice research and refinery facility in Ayutthya province, which produces the Royal Umbrella brand of jasmine rice; Big Cola, a Peruvian soft drink manufacturer with a manufac-turing factory in Thailand; and Lotte, a multinational food, chemicals, and shopping corporation with investments in Thailand. A retreat was also organized for the students at Pattaya beach.

Students also had an opportunity to experience to live and work in the central business district of Bangkok for the remaining two weeks. The short course program concluded with a culminating event wherein students were asked to share the highlights of their one-month stay in Thailand.

Japan’s APU Ritsumeikan Uji Highschool returns for Thai business exposure course with PIM

This year’s 36-student cohort from APU RitsumeikanUji Highschool was led by Mr. Ogawa Tamon, Professor. Visitng on 18 and 21 March, the group was also accompanied by Mr. Higashimae Kei and Ms. Hagio Yoshiko.

The group was brought to two partner companies, one of which is Khao C.P., the producer of the world famous Royal Umbrella jasmine rice. They also visited Ichitan Group Public Company Limited, a Thai company that produces green tea which boasts of having highest market share in the country.

Osotspa Kagome shares health benefits from consuming tomatoes with CP ALL and PIMOsotspa Kagome, one of 7-Eleven’s suppliers, visited PIM to conduct a knowledge session about the health benefits of consuming tomatoes on 11 February 2016.

Mr. Satoru Nagata, Managing Director, Osostpa Kagome Three delegates from Osotspa Kagome was led by Mr. Satoru Nagata, Managing Director. He was accompanied by Mr. Mamoru Inui, Deputy Managing Director and Ms. Sureeporn Moeisawat, Marketing Manager.

Representatives from PIM and Osotspa Kagome were given opportunities to introduce the products with Mr. Siam Chocksawangwong, Vice President for Administrative Affairs chairing the session, as part of PIM’s first Japanese Networking session for 2016. Mr. Siam encouraged Mr. Satoru to take advantage of the international network present at CP ALL and PIM.

PIM is fast becoming the choice for international students, mostly hailing from Asia-Pacific countries, and could be one important resource for Osotspa Kagome when recruiting management personnel. He provided some pertinent details on Siam Makro’s planned expansion to the CLMV countries and invited Mr. Satoru to consider international activities in line with CP ALL’s Asian focus.

Myanmar’s Thi Ho Tea & Coffee Enterprise establishes relations with PIMMr. Ye Tun Min, Managing Director, Thi Ho Tea & Coffee Enterprise, one of Myanmar’s leading coffee and tea companies founded in 1972, met with PIM”s management team on 3 March 2016.

It is known for providing premium teas grown from northern Shan state, and coffee from northern Chin state and southern Shan state. He was accompanied by Mr. Ye Win Hlaing. Mr. Ye Tun Min also provided a brief on

his organization’s entry to education in Myanmar, which has fast become one of his passions. As principal of Kidz Grow International School, he has been able to contribute to primary school education for over five years. Initial discussions with PIM executives covered possible collaboration with PIM’s iMTM program which could be in line with the bachelor degrees MIU will offer in the near future.

Mr. Shuei showed interest in PIM’s internship model, saying that students from Thailand are now becoming more

familiar with what Kiyakyushu has to offer as a study destination. Ms. Tipawan Apiwanworarat, Dean, Faculty of Liberal Arts, who is also knowledgeable in Japanese culture, noted that since the city government cooperates with many universities in the area, perhaps it would be a good idea to look for ways to link PIM to the education sector of Fukuoka.

Mr. Nie expressed that PIM’s students are welcome to apply for internships at Huawei, particularly those enrolled in the Faculty of Engineering and Technology. He added that he is certain that the time spent at Huawei will be beneficial especially since the internships will allow all students to be exposed to

many departments, learn specialized skills, ad be surrounded by experts. PIM’s Mr. Pollasak Ruong-panyaroj said this could be a good starting point for what he hopes to be a long and lasting friendship between Huawei and PIM.

CCTV 5 features CP ALL and PIM’s commitment to promoting “Go” game in Thailand A CCTV5 crew spends a day at PIM to interview and capture footage on 19 February for a segment on China’s main sports broadcaster to be aired on 5 March 2016. The crew was given a brief about CP ALL and PIM before the shoot. The next day, 20 February, the crew interviewed Mr. Korsak Chairasmisak, Chief Executive Officer of CP ALL to get his insights on why and how the Go game influences business strategy of 7-Eleven and CP ALL operations more broadly.
