Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sompop Manarungsan, PIM President, expressed gratitude and pleasure for His Excellency’s visit to the campus. “PIM is interested in learning from Kenya’s expertise, particularly in the field of agro-industry,” he added. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sompop also mentioned that several faculty members are currently working on related activities that His Excellency may find valuable for future collaboration.

H.E. Patrick S. Wamoto, EBS, states that the model PIM is using is different from what is available in Kenya. He expressed the same sentiments with CP Group’s Chairman, Mr. Dhanin Chearavanont, agreeing that every organization is only as good as the people it has. Upon the receipt of the scholarship, His Excellency expressed his deep

gratitude and articulated that the concept of a corporate university is a wonderful idea that Kenyan students would be pleased to explore. He is looking for ways to add value to areas in Kenyan industry, a process that CP and Thailand more broadly, is able to implement well.

Dr. Usanee Kulintornprasert, Director, International Relations gave further details on the thrusts of PIM as an academic, research, and industry-focused university to which His Excellency underlined his interest in closely working together as he believes that the work-study model PIM employs will be useful for Kenyans to gain practical and relevant experience in preparation to joining the workforce.

Welcoming the Indonesian diplomats to the PIM campus, Dr. Somrote Komolavanij, Assistant to the President for Academic Planning, introduced PIM as a place of learning where young people are prepared to join the workforce. He added that he looks forward to learning from Indonesia’s long history of influence in education in the region which could enhance and further contribute to Thailand’s mission in education. Dr. Somrote also shared that PIM aspires to see more Indonesian students in the Institute and presented the representatives of the Indonesian government a scholarship for a deserving Indonesian to study at PIM.

Dr. Yunardi expressed his gratitude for PIM’s generosity and looks forward to an opportunity to initiate ties and activities with PIM. He congratulated PIM’s efforts in implementing work-based education at possibly the largest scale in the region and commended the model’s focus on involving students in real world situations at the onset of the programs.

Dr. Usanee Kulintornprasert, Director, Office of International Relations provided more details on PIM’s emphasis in integration with industry priorities.“We make sure thatstudents receive relevant work experiences and encourage

them to provide solutions to any issues they may encounterwhile deployed in their workplaces,” she underlined. She added that an example is organizing innovation contests to provide incentives to students who can deliver innovative solutions and contribute to PIM’s partner companies.

Mr. Arif Suyoko complimented PIM’s rapid increase in student intakes and mentioned that learning from PIM’s recruitment model would be helpful to Indonesian universities. “The interest to study in Thailand has been steadily increasing for Indonesians particularly in business, I hope more Indonesians choose PIM due to the Institute’s uniqueness,” he added. With CP’s presence in Indonesia increasing, Mr. Arif noted that cooperation with Thai industries and universities is likely to intensify.

Discussion topics included PIM’s expanding reach in the region, models on internships and corporate mentors, and mutual goals to contribute to raise the level of higher education in Asia.

although PIM is new compared to other universities, theInstitute has established relationships with more than 50universities, and is keen to build more in areas such as Europe and Australasia.

In closing, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sompop awarded the Embassy of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, through Mr. Bounxay, a scholarship for Laotians to study a full timedegree at PIM.

Mr. Bounxay remarked that work-based education is animpressive study model that PIM is utilizing to the fullest. He mentioned that learning how PIM prepares studentswho will be “ready to work” showed how different PIM isfrom other institutions of higher learning.

PIM President and one of Thailand’s key economicexperts, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sompop Manarungsan agreed that PIM and MU have many aspirations in commonparticularly to innovation and agriculture. He commended MU’s significant contribution to New Zealand’s development andaffirms that the Institute can learn a lot from one of NewZealand’s top ranking universities. Hon. Steve thankedthe CP and PIM team for organizing a “tremendous visitthat has given us a chance to talk about commoninterests especially in food and aviation.” He also notedthat engaging and working alongside with the Institutewill allow MU to share experiences and be as useful as possible.

been pivotal to the development of New Zealand’s coreindustries specifically in food and agri-business.

Mr. Stuart was joined by Prof. Claire Massey, Director ofAgri-Food Business and Mr. Michael O’Shaughnessy,Director of International Relations. They were accompaniedby Mr. Rathpol Bumrungkittikul from the New ZealandTrade & Enterprise.

Dr. Montri Congtrakultien, Dean, Faculty of InnovativeAgricultural Management (IAM) mentioned how important it isfor PIM to prepare qualified and work-ready students whounderstand modern farm techniques, possess entrepreneurialspirit, and are socially conscious.

Dr. Tiranun Srikanchai, Dean, Faculty of Agro-Industry(AGI) shared a unique model for recruitment which features afive-day camp wherein 50 out of 100 candidates wereselected and awarded scholarships to PIM. Ms.Nattaporn Chotyakul, Lecturer expressed interest inexploring MU’s distance education programs.

Ms. Chotiros Holman from Aviation Business Management(ABM) program under the Faculty of Management Sciencesoutlined some of challenges of operating a program that catersto filling a demand for personnel at the services level.

Insightful knowledge exchanges transpired concerningthe effectiveness of PIM’s study model, distance learningpossibilities, and collaboration models. The delegates were also accompanied to a CP ALL distribution center in Bang Buathong, Nonthaburi earlier in the day.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sompop Manarungsan, PIM President, welcomed the delegation noting how important it is for the Institute to connect with distinguished universities such as MU.

Mr. Stuart said that understanding theories and linking them to practical concepts is an exercise that MU’s agricultural faculties went through in the 1990s. “We have a lot in common,” he added. Ranked 15th in the world for veterinary sciences and 33rd in agriculture and forestry by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) rankings, MU’s academic, research, and practical contributions have

Mr. Wayne Crosbie, Director for International andBusiness Development, William Angliss Institute (WAI)commended PIM’s direct involvement with industries, noting how this approach has allowed WAI to flourish and remain independent for the past 75 years. With five campuses in China and close linkages with the ASEANand Singaporean government, Mr. Wayne considersAustralia to be a part of greater Asia.

Mr. Phornvit Phacharintanakul, PIM’s Vice President forAcademic Affairs, welcomed the opportunity to get toknow one of Australia’s world famous institutionscarrying an established history of success in preparing culinary and hospitality experts. Ms. PuangpetchNitayanont, Acting Dean, Faculty of Food BusinessManagement shared PIM’s vision and short terms plans

relevant to the Institute’s mission to contribute to Thailand’s growing food industry.

An overview of the current activities including internship opportunities for hotel and tourism managementstudents at PIM was provided by Ms. WisakhaVadhanapakorn and Mr. Puthapong Purushahansa. Thesession was concluded by a campus facilities tour and a visit to the 7-Eleven flagship store, followed by animmersion trip to Makro Food Service.

This visit was arranged following an exploratory trip to Australia by CP ALL and PIM’s international developmentteam, led by Mr. Siam Chocksawangwong in September2015.

University of Boras continues discussion on possible academic collaborationDr. Hakan Alm of Sweden’s University of Boras furthers discussion with PIM about opportunities to work together to increase international exposure to students in both educational institutions on 29 September 2015.

integration lab where PIM students embark on a special project for 12 weeks and may be assigned to international workplaces. This could be an option for Uconsider developing complementary activities forstudents seeking Asian business experiences.

Other discussion points included student exchange, internship opportunities, and research staff mobility.

Also joining the meeting were Dr. Usanee Kulintornprasert, Director, Office of International Relations; Mr. DerekThitsanuthit and Dr. Pithoon Thanabordeekij from PIM’sInternational College.

Following a previous visit to PIM last October 2014, Dr.Hakan Alm of UB called on PIM’s representatives fromthe International College to continue defining possibleacademic collaboration. He gave an overview of UB andintroduced some of his faculty’s research activities on business, finance, and IT. He was accompanied by Mrs.Wannapa Pliansri from the Asian Institute of Technology(AIT).

PANYAPIWAT Institute of Management

PIM Short Course Programs are designed for international

students interested in expanding their knowledge in Asian

National Sun Yat-sen University talks research collaboration with PIM’s China-ASEAN Center Top Taiwanese university, National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) explores ways to collaborate with PIM’s China-ASEAN Center on 1 September 2015.

KuDr. Tang Zhimin, Associate Professor and Dean of PIM’sInternational College welcomed the guests noting that atPIM, continuously improving the curriculum and deliveryof programs shows the Institute’s commitment to raising the bar for higher education in Thailand. “Every programcontains management components, a strong area for the CP Group as a whole. We invite professionals who bring realcurrent experiences to our classes, exponentially increasingthe value of education here at PIM,” he said.

Prof. Samuel C. Y. Ku, Director of Institute of Chinaand Asia-Pacific Studies, NSYSU introduced theuniversity as one that places equal emphasis on theteaching and research of humanities as well as science and engineering. He was joined by Dr. TaiWan-Ping, Director, Department of InternationalBusiness, National Sun Yat-sen University and Mr. Po-Chun Chuang, Institute of China and Asia-PacificStudies.

Discussion points included ways to collaborate inresearch covering both technical sciences and cultureand the arts through PIM’s China-ASEAN Center. Thecenter is currently working on many hot issues inThailand and the region, such as trans-boundaryissues and the enabling nature of IT in various businesses. Dr. Tang noted that interns are welcometo spend time at the center and contribute to its manyongoing research activities.

Ms. Mijeong Song, Managing Director explained that through participation in major exhibitions and targeted networking, the center increases familiarity of Korean foods and products in Thailand and encourages a positive image of Korean agricultural and fishery products through relationships between exporters and distributors. She was accompanied by Ms. Jiyeon Min who expressed that it is not easy to learn theory and practice at the same time, saying “PIM is very impressive, we would like to cooperate.”

Prof. Arnoud De Meyer, President, SMU expressed his gratitude for welcoming his team to PIM. He inquired about PIM’s iMBA program, stating that cooperation may be explored to complement each organization’s post-graduate business program. He was accompanied by Mr. Martin Tan, Executive Director, Institute of Societal Leadership; Ms. Chan Wai Leng, Director, Office of Advancement; Dr. James T.H. Tang, Dean and Professor of Political Science, School of Social Sciences and Special Advisor (China Initiatives); and Mr. Pang Eng Fong, Professor of Strategic Management (Practice), Lee Kong Chian School of Business.

that can provide a wide network to support the needs ofthe student body. Mr. Phornvit Phacharintanakul, VicePresident for Academic Affairs, added that PIM is committed to developing people that the world needsespecially for the agro-industry and managementsectors. “We are new, and it is PIM’s youth that drivesour organization to achieve and prove that our work-based education model works,” he emphasized.

Dr. James also implemented an expert interviewcovering Thailand Workforce Analysis, specifically onskill gaps in the ASEAN, with key representatives led by Dr. Lertchai Suthamanon, Assistant to the President forPlanning and Development. This research is beingconducted by SMU with JP Morgan.

Mr. Phornvit Phacharintanakul, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Mr. Siam Chocksawangwong, Vice President for Administrative Affairs expressed their appreciation for the academics’ visit and eagerness to explore ways to collaborate.

Dr. Fan noted that the university has several international programs on offer, including fashion and product design, recognized as leading programs in Asia. Graduates from these programs are often recruited by top international

designers and firms. “SCU seniors may opt to spend 6 months in Shanghai as interns. In the future, they may consider Thailand because of the country’s position as an educational, commercial, and cultural hub in Southeast Asia,” he added. Discussions led to several opportunities for collaboration such as PIM to host interns and exchange students from SCU. SCU will be returning to Thailand on 25 November 2015 to ink an MOU with PIM.

He was accompanied by Dr. Michel Tranet, Professor of Archaeology.

Prof. Chan is also the founder of NU, the country’s firstprivate university. “When we bond together, we can helpeach other,” added Prof. Chan who visited PIM to explore possible collaboration with Thailand’s corporateuniversity. He also commended CP’s investments and contribution to his nation, particularly in the agriculture sector.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Somrote Komolavanij, Assistant to thePresident for Academic Affairs noted that though PIM is small and new, the Institute is determined to see its graduates succeed in their chosen careers. He invited Prof. Chan to visit again; trips to CP subsidiaries can beincluded as exposure experiences for NU.

Dr. Usanee Kulintornprasert, Director, Office of InternationalRelations shared her experience visiting the impressive NU campus at Phnom Penh and getting to know the influenceof matriculating at NU for Cambodians.

Ms.Thunwita Sirivorapat Puthpongsiriporn, AssistantDean, Faculty of Business Administration continued the discussion by sharing the details of the upcomingbachelor degree program in International Modern TradeManagement (iMTM). The iMTM program, scheduled forits first intake in August 2016, is comprised of 65% theory and 35% practical learning, aiming to prepareinterested youth for a career in this particular field, whichis one of CP’s core businesses.

PIM’s Marketing Manager, Mr. Atit Koirala, detailed the uniqueness of the master’s degree in international business administration (iMBA) which is highlighted by rare courses on oriental philosophies in business and itsChina ASEAN focus. He added that scholarships areavailable for NU alumni who may wish to continue their education at PIM, provided that they satisfy therequirements for acceptance.

PIM President, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sompop Manarungsan, expressed his appreciation for the high level delegation’s visit to PIM. He intimated CP ALL’s commitment to contributing to society by establishing PIM eight years ago. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sompop added that CP is also looking to share its accumulated wealth of experience and knowledge to all who may also be interested in pursuing higher education at PIM. Establishing PIM is also a way to develop human resources, carrying the CP DNA, to fulfil the needs of the growing conglomerate, he noted.

Fr. Dr. Stephen acknowledged that Indian higher education systems are often too theoretical, and as a result graduates need to be retrained by the companies they join.”Don Bosco is now applying more project-based and practical approaches to learning, after seeing firsthand how this concept can change a person,” Fr. Dr. Stephen confirmed. He said that ADBU is looking to address the 40-50% food wastage in India due to ineffective distribution and packaging. Dr. Sunandan Baruah of the College of Engineering & Technology shared ADBU’s

research involving food packaging analysis technology using nano sensors. Fr. Dr. Stephen recognized CP’s world class experience in agro-products, making PIM an ideal partner to collaborate on this project.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Datchakorn Tancharoen, PIM’s Vice Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology provided an overview of the academic and research activities at PIM, particularly in the field of computer engineering. Dr. Nattakarn Phaphoom mentioned that activities include responding to requirements from CP and translating these ideas to special projects and research at PIM.

Discussions revealed that both universities are relatively new, supported by large organizations, and have substantially grown over the past eight years. Indicators include ADBU’s ability to develop 17 programs at the doctorate level in less than a decade and PIM’s rapid increase in annual student enrolment from 500 in 2007 to over 4000 this year. Some possible initial activities were identified including student exchanges.

Dr. Jai Bir Rai introduced BITAD as a center that aspiresto be a premier regional development training institute inAsia focusing on areas including young leadership training, executive and managerial leadership training, management excellence, project management training,good governance skills, and social solution through econometric, financial and mathematical modeling. Hestated that BITAD also organizes international eventsand conferences in Bhutan.

A team led by Ms. Parichart Buakao, Assistant to the President for Organizational Communication, expressedinterest initiating activities and welcoming more studentsfrom Bhutan. Some possible initial collaborative activitiesinclude developing short term programs and study visitswith BITAD. Dr. Usanee Kulintornprasert, Director of theOffice of International Relations, and Dr. VeerisaChotiyaputta, Assistant Director of PIM’s InternationalCollege, also participated in the meeting.

Ms. Wisakha Vadhanapakorn of the Faculty of Management Sciences provided an overview of the hotel and tourism programs available at PIM. Ms. Pauline showed interest in many aspects of PIM’s work-based education model expressing, “PIM has good programs with good cooperation with industries.” She proceeded to introduce MCIE noting that the institution specializes in five core areas; business, hospitality, age-care, children, and disabilities. MCIE also matches students, who satisfy

specific qualifications, with companies to perform internships which are often one-year long programs.

A discussion centered on niche subject areas that PIM currently specializes in such as oriental wisdom in business and service innovations in modern trade. Ms Pauline added, “There are a lot of innovative activities going on in PIM. It would be nice to try to develop a program together.”

The group visited PIM to further explore business opportunities and possible collaboration with Thailand’s Corporate University, one of the primary subsidiaries of CP ALL, a business line of the Charoen Pokphand Group.

Ms. Susan commended PIM’s approach to learning and encouraged the Institute to continue efforts to changethe mindset of Thais towards work-based education. Shestated that maximizing this learning model will be important for the new generation to grasp at a youngage. Ms. Susan was accompanied by Mr. Victor Giam

When asked about international mobility, accreditation,and recognition, Dr. Usanee Kulintornprasert sharedsome of the advantages of being part of CP which has opened many doors for activities and agreements withuniversities and corporations outside of Thailand. Ms.Susan invited PIM back to their campus to promote the mission of the Institute while SISB received an openinvitation to join any relevant events and seminarsorganized by CP ALL and PIM.

Shri Ramswaroop Memorial University learns CP’s management principles A group of 19 engineering and management students from India’s Shri Ramswaroop Memorial University (SRMU) visit PIM as part of summer exposure course in Thailand on 24 September 2015. They were accompanied by representatives from their host, Asian Institute of Technology, led by Prof. Nitin Kumar Tripathi.

As host to SRMU,he thanked PIM for receiving the Indian students, notingCP and PIM’s approach as completely different to highereducation. He was accompanied by Dr. Raj Laxmi and Engr. Anurag Agarwal from SRMU.

The session continued with Q&A sessions wherein both faculty and students from SRMU actively participated,inquiring on how CP overcame challenges on totalquality management, packaging and distribution of products, future ventures, and PIM’s work-study model.The program concluded with a study tour in CP ALL’s7-Eleven flagship store.

Mr. Derek Thitsanuthit of PIM’s International Collegewelcomed the delegation, gave an overview of CP, andproceeded to give a special session on CP’s managementprinciples. He highlighted how the group is directly impactedby CP Group CEO Mr. Dhanin Chearavanont’s adherenceto oriental philosophies. CP’s investment in highereducation is an example of how the group views givingback to society while also developing people withdesirable traits to support the group’s main businesslines; agro-industry, telecommunications, and marketingand distribution, he noted.

Kansai University Triangle Program Five students from Kansai University (KU) complete exchange program prepared jointly by CP ALL and PIM on 7 September 2015.

This year’s second cohort from KU joined a two-weekprogram which covered a wide range of knowledgeareas including international business administration, anEnglish language focus training session, comparativeanalysis of Thai and Japanese culture, and CP ALL’ssignature internship experience. The program was led by Prof. Alexander Bennett, Prof. Ikeda Keiko, and Mr. Yokoyama Ryuta from KU’s Division of InternationalAffairs.

During the orientation program, KU faculty and students showed great interest in the growing internationality of PIM and the origins of the Institute. Prof. Alexandercommended the large network PIM possesses throughCP ALL’s industry partners and linkages and the Institute’s unique positioning as a corporate university.

The method of teaching and learning also sparked several discussions mostly towards the delivery andeffectiveness of work-based education.

The program also consisted of several field trips tobroaden the participants understanding about Thailand’sbusiness context, culture, and society. The interns weretaken to places such as the Chitralada Agricultural RoyalProject; Khao C.P., a rice research and refinery facility inAyutthya province which produces the Royal Umbrellabrand of jasmine rice. Special courses on Thai classicaldance and Thai arts including food and flower garlandpreparations were arranged for the students. The internswere also given an opportunity to join sessions of PIM’sinternational MBA (iMBA) program.

Chuo University Global Internship Program Five students from Chuo University (CU), Japan complete exchange program prepared jointly by CP ALL and PIM which was held from 31 August to 11 September 2015.

This global internship was developed in close consultation with CU group leader, Dr. Masatake Saito, Associate Professor, Faculty of Commerce and PIM’s Faculty of Business Administration, Office of International Relations, and CP ALL.

Dr. Ruengsak Kawtummachai, Associate Professor and Assistant to the President for Academic Planning and Ms. Thunwita Sirivorapat Puthpongsiriporn, Assistant Dean, Faculty of Business Administration provided the overview of the program on 31 August 2015.

The program consisted of intensive immersions in CP RAM, a CP ALL subsidiary that produces frozen, chilled, and baked goods distributed in 7-Eleven stores domestically and exported to several countries; Ichitan Factory; the Mahachai distribution centers; PIM; and the CP ALL headquarters.

A completion program and farewell party was organized for the five interns Ms. Shiori Seto, Ms. Yumi Yamada, Ms. Megumi Suzuki, Ms. Hikari Kato, and Ms. Ayaka Homma, together with another group of Chuo University students who participated in a one-day seminar at PIM on 11 September 2015.

preliminary analysis on Liby Group’s competitiveness in the Thai market and offered advice on where they should focus to ensure market penetration. CP ALL’s Mr. AdisornWongjittapoke and PIM’s Mr. Pollasak Ruongpanyarojaccompanied the representatives from Liby Group to visitthe CP ALL headquarters and Makro.

An agreement was subsequently signed with the LibyGroup and CP Group China on 22 September 2015.

Mandom Corporation impressed with PIM work-study modelPresident of Mandom Corporation Thailand, Mr. Shinji Kaga, expressed his delight to learn about PIM’s practical approach to education during his visit to the campus on 6 October 2015.

The representatives visited PIM to learn more about theeducational techniques being implemented in Thailand’s Corporate University. The delegation was welcomed by Mr. SiamChocksawangwong, VP for CP ALL and VP for AdministrativeAffairs, PIM. Mr. Shinji Kaga stated that he was impressed with thework-study model, noting that practical learning will be beneficial when students graduate and seek employment. He believes thatlinkages with corporations and educational institutions will becomeincreasingly important in the years to come.

Ms. Tipawan Apiwanworarat, PIM’s Dean of the Faculty of Liberal Arts shared that her team is actively searchingfor internship opportunities for Business Japanesestudents studying at PIM and may consider MandomThailand in the future. CP ALL and PIM also took thismeeting as an opportunity to award Mr. Shinji with ascholarship for Mandom Corporation Thailand employees to study at PIM.

Sabay is led by renowned Cambodian entrepreneur, Mr. Sila Chy who is also the founder of CBM Corporation, the country’s leading food and beverage business group comprised of 8 brands.

Mr. Sila expressed that he appreciates PIM’s study model because of its focus in practice; theories learned in the classroom can immediately be tested in the workplace due to the Institute’s work-study model, making the leaning process very relevant to industries today. He added that PIM may be a good option for

building capabilities for his own corporations; as histeam continues to mature, he is looking to prepare histalented staff for mid-management.

Mr. Siam Chocksawangwong, PIM’s Vice President forAcademic Affairs articulated his interest in looking for ways to work together with the famed Cambodian entrepreneur. Ms. Puangpetch Nitayanont, Acting Dean, Faculty of Food Business Management shared theInstitute’s plans for expansion beginning with a Food Academy scheduled to open by the end of 2016. Ms.Nanthawan Supcharoen, CP ALL General Manager, Mr.Atit Koirala, who is responsible for internationalmarketing, complimented Mr. Sila’s accomplishmentsand expressed interest to develop activities with him.
