October 2012 www.sandiego.edu/gradlife Hello USD grad and law students! My name is Nick Franco, and I am the Chair of the Graduate Student Council for the 2012‐2013 academic year. I hope your semesters are off to a smooth start! I just want to introduce myself to you all and also briefly share some of the goals the GSC has for this year. I am in my third year of coursework in the Leadership Studies PhD program, and I currently work on campus as a doctoral graduate assistant in the Office of Student Affairs. I served on the GSC last year as a representative for the SOLES Graduate Student Association, and look forward to serving the GSC again this year. In case you are not familiar, the overarching purpose of the GSC is to serve the needs of the graduate and law students at USD by building a strong and successful graduate community. The group is comprised of representatives from each graduate school association and/or program. As the GSC chair, I am very excited to be leading this amazing group in achieving three different goals we established collectively during our annual retreat in August. They are: (1) explore options for increasing the graduate and law student activity fee to better support student research and professional development; (2) consolidate and enhance our programmatic efforts in order to provide diverse programming options; and (3) improve our operations and Councilor commitment to the work of the GSC and their school associations. Motivating these three goals is our desire to best serve the diverse and extensive graduate and law student community we have here at USD. So, please do not hesitate to let us know how we are doing or how we may better achieve these goals and meet your needs. Your school’s GSC Councilors, as well as the GSC Executive Board, encourage you to provide us feedback. We also encourage you to get involved, whether it be through attending our monthly GSC meetings or participating in our upcoming events. Stay tuned for more information, and I hope to meet many of you throughout the year. Until then, take care and be well! Hello USD grad and law students! Warmly, Nick Franco, Graduate Student Council Chair
