Windwood Presbyterian Church is happy to introduce one of the fastest growing sports to the Spring/Klein/Tomball community…DISC GOLF. Disc golf is a lot like traditional "ball" golf, except players use specially made plastic flying discs instead of balls and clubs, and throw them for 'par' at an above-ground target instead of a hole in the ground. There are different types of discs used for different purposes, much like ball golfers use different clubs.

The object of the game is to throw a golf disc into the target or basket (a steel basket over which chains hang), in the fewest number of throws. The player begins by 'driving' from a designated tee area and continues toward the target, throwing each consecutive shot from the spot where the previous throw has landed. Finally, a successful 'putt' sends the disc into the target. The most satisfying sound a disc golfer can hear is the 'ching!' of a disc crashing the chains before dropping into the basket.

Want to learn more about disc golf? Visit www.pdga.com or stop by Windwood Presbyterian Church and ask for Doug Rogers – Director of Sports Ministry and co-designer of the course. He loves to give tips and has free discs to try out. Check-ing in at the church’s front desk is required M-F, 8am-5pm and all will be checked against the National Sexual Preditors List. The course was installed for the purpose of giving glory to God, to allow all to have fun and enjoy God’s wonderful creation. It can’t be said better than what is written on the Windwood Disc Golf Course pencils…Where Christ is King and the Chains go Ching.

So what’s the big deal about Pineapple? Let me share what I’ve learned about this beautiful, robust, tropical fruit.

First of all, the Pineapple is listed in the top foods available that you can eat without buying Organic. It has one of the lowest residual pesticide loads, making it a safe bet. Secondly, according to Mike Adams of NaturalNews.com, “ Bromelain, the key enzyme in Pineapple, banishes inflammation as effectively as drugs. It reduces swelling, helps against sore throat, treats arthritis and gout, and speeds digestion of proteins. New research is even showing pineapple to be highly effective at cancer prevention and treatment.”

It’s also being touted as offering protection and treatment for macular degeneration...as well as protecting the immune system with powerful antioxidants. The list goes on! All I know is that it’s part of my morning smoothie that I just can’t go without these days. So go...Get your Pineapple on!

See a couple of ideas below for some summer time smoothies!

My husband, Ken, and I have lived in Northwest Houston since 1976 and in Gleannloch Farms for 6 years. Ken is a business broker in the area. My 88 year old mother as well as our daughter and son in law also live in Gleannloch. With the arrival of their twins, Bryce and Lauren, in Feb., there are 4 generations in Gleannloch! I am running for the Board of our HOA to help contribute to keeping Gleannloch the premier community it is for future generations. The following are my experiences and accomplishments which I feel qualify me to serve.

Lots of people love to garden, and love the idea of having fresh herbs at hand. However, not everyone has the space for gardening. If you live in an apartment, you’re planning on moving, or if your work schedule prevents you from putting a lot of time into your garden, then you might want to consider planting a container herb garden. Container gardens have the advantage of being small and portable, but still allow you to keep fresh herbs at your fingertips.

GardensHerb

Container

How to plant * Decide on how many plants you want to grow and then choose a container that’s wide and deep enough to accommodate them comfortably. * Cover the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot and then add a layer of compost. * Arrange your plants in the container and fill in the gaps with compost and firm around plants. * Water well. * After planting, put the pot in a sunny spot, near the kitchen door or an outdoor kitchen area so you always have them close to hand.

Aftercare * Place the pot in full sun and water regularly, especially during the summer. * Add a liquid feed to your watering can once a week to give plants a boost during the growing season.

By autumn, annual herbs such as basil and coriander will run out of steam and can be discarded, but it’s a good time to plant new woody herbs such as rosemary. Perennial herbs such as mint, thyme, oregano or chives will die back, but will regrow in the spring. Five herbs to try * Thyme ‘Silver Poesie’ - tastes as good as ordinary thyme but has pretty silver bordered leaves * Curry plant - silver grey leaves and yellow flowers, smells strongly of curry * Curled leaf parsley - If you want a stronger flavour, try the flat leaved variety * Mint - it’s best in pots so it doesn’t overrun your whole garden * Basil - try growing together with tomatoes for a summer dish in a pot

Because of the growth here in Spring the Klein ISD is looking at options for the high schools. Currently the school board is looking to rezone Gleannloch Farms and this will take effect in the 2012-2013 school year because the campus is overcapacity and projected to grow. Please be aware that there is a Community Forum on May 31st from 7:00-8:30pm at Klein Oak High School. The board vote will be July 11 at 7:00pm at Klein central office. The web site has the information WWW.KleinISD.net. then click on the high school zoning link to the left for pertinent dates.

Q: How will this effect Gleannloch residents?A: You are assuming in this scenario that Gleannloch is being rezoned. There are currently viable options that do not change or rezone Gleannloch. This will be decided on July 11, 2011 at the board meeting.

Q: I But if we are re-zonned will my child be able to finish out at Klein Oak High school and will transportation will be provided? A: No, if the subdivision is rezoned in 2012, juniors and seniors may be grandfathered but will have to provide their own transportation or ride a bus from a predetermined, designated stop in a nearby neighborhood. (this is the current draft policy and that must be Board approved so that is also subject to change)

Q: If you have a current 8th grader (Class of 2015) -Freshman in the fall , live in Gleannloch and we are rezoned is there a chance that my student may attend Klein Oak for 2 years and then transfer to Klein High School ?A: Yes, if the subdivision is rezoned in 2012.

Q: Are there any exceptions to keep my student at Klein Oak if we are rezoned?A: When a family simultaneously having children zoned to two different School district high schools, a year by year transfer shall be granted in order for the younger siblings to attend and be graduates of the high school currently attended by the older siblings.

The transfer may be revoked by a written request from at the parent of guardian by June 30 of each school year. Note: Subject to be approved by the board.

In the school year of 2011-12, if a ninth grade student earns a varsity letter in any athletic program, or has officially been selected for a varsity program for the following year, this student will be granted the option to remain at Klein Oak through graduation as long as the student provides their own transportation or rides a district bus from a pre-determined, designated stop in a nearby neighborhood. Note: Subject to be approved by the board

In the school year of 2011-12, If a ninth grade student lettered in music or other UIL non-athletic events, or was member of good standing of the drill team for the entire school year or qualified for a varsity program for the following year, and is rezoned for 2012-13 the student will provide their own transportation or ride a district bus from a pre-determined, designated stop in a nearby neighborhood. Note: Subject to be approved by the board. All transfer students are subject to existing UIL eligibility requirements.

Will Gleannloch be Rezoned?

Page 13: GLF SmallFileSize

May - June 2011 | GLF-Style Magazine 13

Q: Is there a chance for a current 8th grader (Class of 2015) to start at Klein to attend all 4 years at Klein?A: No

If you still have questions. There is a Board meeting May 9th and the information will be place online for public comments. http://www.kleinisd.net this is the high school zoning link on July 11 the Board will vote at 7pm and this will be the final vote for the plans to re-zone.

This information is subject to change. To keep up with the latest news visit Kleinisd.net or attend the zoning meetings.

Kayla Gebbie (Incoming Freshmen): I don't want to change schools, or deal with the construction. Plus, I like the song "Black and Yellow" and they don't have a song called "Blue and Yellow!"

Rodney and Marcus Ripley (Sophmore & Freshman): Rodney doesn't want to leave Klein Oak due to his position on the football and track teams. Going to Klein would be okay bud he'd rather stay at Oak. Marcus would like to stay at Klein Oak as well, and attend the school that his brother is at.

As a child, my wife Ann spent many summer days with her sisters rambling through Midwest farm country, picking blackberries for their traditional family fruit cobbler. The recipe had been handed down through five generations from Great Great Grandmother Cordelia Hudson.

Two decades later, when Ann and I moved to the suburbs, Ann resolved to resurrect the family tradition. She located a large blackberry patch next to the woods behind my neighbor David’s house. Every week in midsummer, she would disappear for a couple of hours, reappearing at home with a fresh bucket of blackberries. A couple hours later- voila! Grandma Cordelia’s homemade blackberry cobbler.

But a few years ago, my neighbor David had the blackberry bushes cut down. They blocked the view from his patio, he said, and he wanted a better vista. Ann related the tragedy that evening: “David tried to tell me those weren’t blackberries. He said, ‘Those are just ol’ sticker bushes.’ “ Ann rolled her eyes in mild disgust. Fearful I was hearing the swan song of an enjoyable family tradition, I chimed in with a helpful suggestion. It seemed to me the plump blackberries at the store were even better candidates than the ones Ann had been bringing home. Ann didn’t warm to my proposal. Picking the berries was part of the “whole experience,” she informed me curtly.

But Grandma Cordelia’s cobbler, I learned, is a versatile dish. Apparently any fruit will do. Persevering, Ann purchased blueberry bushes to plant in our front yard. A year later the first harvest was ready. Voila! Grandma’s fresh cobbler - with blueberries! Last week Joseph found blackberry bushes growing wild a couple miles from my house. Ann announced that blackberry picking would be a great family activity. Funny - a two mile walk in the hot sun to pick blackberries off sticker bushes didn’t sound like a fun family activity to me. It was a pretty long walk under the hot sun to the blackberry patch, and between the boys complaining and Ann telling me what great quality family time we were having, I was feeling pretty miserable. I felt my anger overflowing toward my good friend and neighbor David: Why oh why did you cut down those beautiful blackberry bushes in your backyard, you inconsiderate ignoramus?

But when we arrived to the sunny meadow, dotted with flitting birds and butterflies, we found many bushes, and indeed they were covered with blackberries. It was tricky reaching over the thorny branches to get the juiciest ones. The boys and I got into a healthy male competition about who could pick the most. And we laughed with male satisfaction to hear the other fellow yelp when a sticker found its way to vulnerable skin. In retrospect, it really was a good family time. And Ann was right – that evening the blackberry cobbler topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream was the best dessert I ever had.

It seems that Grandma Cordelia’s recipe neglects to mention the most important ingredients – effort and love. For all we do in life, when we put these into the mix, it makes everything better.

Every day I would drive by the church located here in Gleannloch Farms at 19920 Champion Forest Drive. I was curious about this location. So I asked if I could stop by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints and take some photos inside. I grew up in Minnesota where I only knew of 2 faiths, Catholic and Lutheran. I was surprise to learn that this location was a meeting house and was open to people of all ages, faiths and backgrounds are welcome. The church building serves nearly 1,100 Latter-day-Saints who reside in Gleannloch , Tomball, Spring and Klein areas. The 15,00 square foot meetinghouse has a "cultural hall" for sports and cultural arts activities. I found the tour to be delightful and I appreciate now how this is a wonderful addition to our subdivision.

Ingredients:½ cup fresh lime juice (anywhere from 3-6 key limes)4 egg yolks4 teaspoons lime zest 1 can sweetened condensed milk (use a 14 oz can)1-9 inch graham cracker crust

In a medium bowl, whisk the lime zest and egg yolks together for about one to two minutes to achieve a light green hue. Next, beat in the condensed milk and then add in the juice and mix again. Allow this key lime mixture to stand at room temperature until thickened.

While the flavors are marrying at room temperature in this easy key lime pie recipe, preheat the oven to 325˚F. Once the key lime mixture has sufficiently thickened, pour into the graham cracker crust and bake in the oven for about 15 minutes. When the center of the key lime mixture sets but still is wiggly, you can remove the pie from the oven and allow cooling to room temperature.

Once your pie has achieved room temperature, chill it in the refrigerator for several hours. You can serve your pie topped with whipped cream or serve it plain.

So where do you find a good pick up game of basketball here in Gleannloch? On an average Sunday around 3pm you can find quite a few guys in their of early 30's to mid 40's in age, and out on the court. Everyone is professional, friendly and from the Gleannloch subdivision. They always welcome new players and although the games are quite competitive, it is not super intense competition. Nobody is trying to re-live their high school glory years and end up with a visit to KSF Orthopedics and a professional visit with our local Gleannloch doctor, Dr George for knee surgery or ACL reconstruction!

The group gets together every Sunday at Frank Elementary School here in the subdivision. Occasionally during the summer they also get invites to play indoors at Klein Collins. They get together for the exercise and friendship more than anything else. There is a sign up for league play at Champion Forest Baptist Church, and play begins in June. Some of the usual suspects out on the court are Jim Houston, Truett Akin, Dr Tad Shirley , Mike Sumrald, Dr Bart Kennedy and Jason Spottswood, Julian Deakin, Eric Adams and Sean McAlister.

If you would like to join the group and get on the mail list contact email : [email protected]

Fishing for Summer ValuesI do not need to remind you that it is hot in Texas this time of year. E-mail requests for light, refreshing wines keep coming in. I also get requests for wines $5 or less that are good for everyday drinking. There are good wines that fill these requests, but the packaging may not be what you’re used to purchasing. You need to think inside the box in order to find the $5 value wines that you used to get in the bottle. Maybe you have noticed that the price of gas, food and everything else has gone up lately. The cost of glass, cork, labels, shipping and everything else that goes into producing a bottle of wine has gone up as well. Wineries have turned to the box to save money and to bring good wines to the consumer at a bargain price. One such winery is Fish Eye. The Pinot Grigio is a light white with flavors of green apple and citrus. A well-balanced wine to sip by the pool. The Shiraz is not a typical shiraz. This red wine is light with blackberry flavors. I chilled the shiraz and it was very refreshing. Fish Eye wines are made in California so that explains the lack of spice on the finish that a typical Australian shiraz would possess. I give both the Pinot Grigio and the Shiraz 3 out of 5 corks.
