News and Events .................................. 27I just love Spring. It brings around changes of so many things. And you are never to old to make a change or to impact the community. Fran Pontessa (on page 16) encourages women and men to get moving this spring and volunteer with Habitat for Humanity.

This is a good time to get out and fix up the lawn and get to know your neighboors and also I would like to carry more one-on-one interviews within our community.

I would like to say what a pleasure it was to meet Sara Coates and listen to her wonderful stories about the "Big City." Hopefully someone has some tips on where to find some good bagel shops and I can let her know.

Again I would like to thank everyone here in Gleannloch Farms for your support. Please feel free to email me with your ideas and stories about our wonderful community.

Take care,

Outdoor Makeover Tips

You've spent countless weekends and a considerable amount of money on your home but you still haven't worked on your your back porch. But this is a great place to sit outside and enjoy the spring. With all the outdoor furniture options that are durable you can extend your living space and not have to pay the tax man for the extended living environment. If you think of the spaces outside your house the same way you think about the ones inside, you can transform your property with versatile outdoor living areas that invite your friends and family members to your back porch. Because my living room windows backed up to my outdoor porch I used the same colors that were inside my home to give you the feel that this was a extension of my indoors.

Page 9: GLF-Style March/April

March - April 2011 | GLF-Style Magazine 9

Outdoor Curtains - Why not dress up the outside? There are hundreds of materials that are made for the great outdoors. Use a sunbrella fabric that will not fade in the Texas sun. Sunbrella fabrics carry a 5 year warranty against fading. This will give you the finished look of your outdoor area. Material is available here in area at Interior Fabrics, Jo-Ann Fabrics , Fabrics & More all located here in Houston.

Outdoor Chandelier - available at Lowes. The chandelier has 8 holds glass votive included, but don't worry about the wind they found a solution .It includes magnets that you place at the bottom of the votive to hold the glass into place. ($50.00) To dress up the chandelier we purchased 4 bead strings from Thads in Old Town Spring and found the right colors to match the sofa and chairs. ($32.00)

Art Work - always ads a touch of interest. I purchased this can-vas picture last year at Garden Ridge Pottery for $19.99. This picture was not made for the outdoors but for the price I couldn't resist it. So far it's lasted a year.

Outdoor Table Lamp - Weather-Resistant lamps available at Chair King. ($60.00) You can place it on a timer to light up your porch each night.

Fire Bowl - This firebowl will bring the ambiance of an outdoor fire to your backyard. Different styles are available at Chair King. I change out the laval rock that was included to fireplace glass crystals also to match my furniture. (Please use fireplace glass crystals they are and not ordianry glass. The cystals are constructed to take the heat of the firebowl. Crystals are available on line at www.fireplaceglass.com/crystals. You will need about 2 pounds to fill the bowl. ($8.00 a pound)

1,627 Miles to GleannlochI had a chance to sit down with a 'gal from New Yorkthat recently moved to Gleannloch. Sara Coates, wholives in the Bluff section.

Q: Why did you move to Texas?A: Because my husband Mark had a job transfer.

Q: Have you lived in any other states?A: No just New York all my life! This is my first move out of New York. I lived there for 37 years. I was born in New York City, lived in Brooklyn and then eventually on Long Island. My husband was in NY for 38 years. He was born in Syracuse NY and moved to Long Island after we graduated from college.

Q: Where did you meet your husband?A: We met at the State Universtiy of New York College at Oneonta in 1992. It is about 4 hours north of Manhattan. I was a Fashion Merchan-dising major.

Q: How many children do you have?A: One. Ben, age eight, attends Hassler Elementary.

Q: Why did you pick Gleannloch Farms?A: I did quite a bit of research online and I narrowed it down to The Woodlands and Gleannloch Farms because of the schools. We knew the second we pulled into GLF that this was the perfect place for us. When I first drove into Gleannloch Farms I felt that I had found "Home" because Gleannloch spoke to me.

Q: What do you miss about The Big Apple? -Sorry my mistake, A true New York gal would never say The Big Apple. What do you miss about the city?A: My family, the food, bagels, my Jewish & Itallian culture (there is way less yelling and sarcasm here), the ethnicity of New York, delis, and diners. When I first moved here I saw a "Dennys" Please, this is not a diner. I'm sorry but Denny's is not a diner. Somebody please contact me if you know of a good deli or diner. When my mom comes to visit, she spends an entire day making us sauce to keep in the freezer. After she leaves there is no room left for anything else. All Ben ever wants to eat is "Grandma's sauce." I come back from every NY trip with a dozen bagels in my suitcase. I have been bringing them back for friends. My guess is that eventually everyone will be sick of my "day old schlepped from NY bagels."

Q: How often do you get back to New York?A: Every other month.

Q: What is your job?A: I do the forecasting, planning and buying for a company called LT Apparel Group in the Garment District. I have been working for them since 1994. Inventory Control Manager is my title. My grandparents came to NYC in the early 1900's. My grandfather owned a men's clothing store and my grandmother was dressmaker. When I ended up working in the Garment District I always felt that in some round-about way that was where I belonged, it was part of who I was, my heritage.

Q: Do you keep up with things in New York?A: Yes, well I have to confess that I purchased an Internet Radio so I can listen to the commuting and weather reports everyday in the city. I still want to know if my train is on time and what the city will be like that day. I just can't help to still want to be conneted to the city. I took the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road) into Pennsylvania Station every day for 15 years. When you commute into Manhattan, a big part of your day is getting out the city. I really miss that. Now my commute consists of dropping Ben at Hassler and driving 3 minutes back to my home office. The only commuting delays I worry about now are if the ducks are blocking the pickup line. That was the hardest lifestyle change for me. I really miss the pace of working in NYC.

Page 13: GLF-Style March/April

March - April 2011 | GLF-Style Magazine 13

Q: What struck you as different here in Texas?A: Imagine my surprise during my sons first Texas football season to learn that a "mum" is not a flower but an arrangement of rib-bons, charms and trinkets dangling from a picture of HIM that I am supposed to WEAR and that you can buy at the GROCERY STORE!!! I just had to have one. Or that I had to donate every last pair of black pants I owned to make room for as much "bling' as I could... I had never seen so many base-ball hats, flip flops, jeans, and t-shirts with rhinestones on them - It's great! I wonder if I stay still long enough would someone rhinestone my forehead? It is stuff like that that has made the transition so much fun for me.

Q: What do you like about living here?A: As different as TX is from NY, it felt familiar to me very quickly. I get the impression that people live here take great pride in being Texans and that is not unlike the pride I have of being a New Yorker. I bought a bumper sticker that says "I wasn't born in Texas, but I got here as fast as I could," and I really feeel that way, that I am lucky enough to have two great places to call "Home."

If you know of a great deli or authentic bagels please email us at [email protected], and we'll pass the information along to Sara and the other New York girls!

It’s March, and still chilly, not the typical time to think about swimming. But, before you can say “summer,” the temps will be hovering at a scorching 90 plus degrees in Houston! Time for people to start dreaming of a pool...floating in cool refreshing water in their own backyard.

Before jumping in, though, there are questions to ask and answers to find.

How much do pools cost? What can fit in my yard? What design is best for my house? What materials do I use? How do I choose a pool builder?

“People come to us feeling a little overwhelmed.” Leo Kleiweg, owner of Paragon Pools. “With the right information, guidance and communication, a pool build should be an enjoyable and fun experience.”

When researching pool builders, the word“custom,” just as in homes, means above the normal and one of a kind. The entire process from design to finish is treated as a unique work of art. With this attention, the end result will be of much higher quality and the costs should reflect the difference.

Our buisness is fast moving and constatnly changing. At Paragon Pools, we are expanding our knowledge in design, construction, materials and trends every day. We make sure the clients’ decisions are based on the most current information available.

Every individual has a vision for their outdoor living space. From pools and spas, with kitchens and fire pits, to patios and landscaping, each project is unique. “We use our experience and knowledge to guide theclient throughout the project. We make it as easy as possible for them to see their dream become a reality.” David Pavlesic, owner of Paragon Pools.

“What we are seeing in pools designs, materials and colors has changed over the last few years.” The use of glass in pools and spas creates an elegant and dramatic look. Also, the design of pools have shifted to cleaner, geometric lines.

Habitat for HumanityIf you think you are too old to make a difference, shame on you!

Fran Pontessa, who lives here in Gleannloch Farms in the Ridge, was at her church, Klein United Methodist, when a guest speaker came to the church to talk about Habitat for Humanity.

Habitat for Humanity encourages women and men to make a difference by building homes and communtities through empowerment. This is a nonprofit Christian organization that was founded on the concept that every family should have the opportunity to own a simple, decent home in which to live in dignity and in safety. Fran was inspired to help this organization.

Fran awakes every day at 4:30 in the morning to have breakfast with her husband, of 42 years, Fred to start the day. After that she goes out to the site on Champion Forest Drive to start her work.

Fran said, "My biggest movtation is seeing the homeower learn how to help themselves and take pride in what they have helped to build."

Fran Pontessa has been a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity now for 5 years. At the age of 64 she's still at the worksite 4 days a week.

Habitat has a Womens Build starting this March, and welcomes all groups of women, and men, to fill the 16 week build schedule. Previous construction experience is not necessary and training will be provided onsite.

The Gleannloch womens club has also volunteered to help with this organtaztion. For more information contatct Habitat for Humanity Women Build.

Saturday March 26th 8-3. For more info go to:http://www.habitat.org/wb/ or www.habitanwhc.org. If you know of a great Gleannloch Farms volunteer, please email us at [email protected]. Thanks!

On the average Sunday morning around 9:00 am at Starbucks here on Spring Cypress, you might notice quite a few new and vintage performance cars in the parking lot. The North West Houston Vette-Rods group was formed 5 years ago by several Corvette owners who met regularly to drink hot coffee and exchange stories about their first real love - performance cars. If you are lucky you may be able to see a 1954 white Corvette Convertible in the parking lot. This car is now 57 years old, and when it went into production it was one 1 of 3,640 that were made. At that time the price of gas was $.21 per gallon and the average household income was $22,000.00. Wow how things have changed.

The North West Houston Vette-Rods group welcomes all owners of performance cars and hot rods to join them and share in their interest of new and classic cars, and the people who drive them. There is no cost to be a member, just show up with a smile and a hot car. For more information contact [email protected] Beginning in March in the Kroger parking lot at Spring Cypress Road, is the Niftee 50ee's car show, held every Saturday night until mid-November. Folks come from miles around to see a host of cars from the late 1970s and older. The show has become nationally and internationally-known, and has been a Spring favorite for over 6 years. It is one of the few truly family-oriented events in the area that remains free to the public. Donations are always appreciated in order to keep the show going and cover the rising costs of security, insurance and weekly prize giveaways.

Their web site is www.niftee50ees.com If you are interested in volunteering to assist with parking or wish to donate prize drawing items. Please contact Molly or Randy Shannon directly through the website for additional information.
