Merritt RCMP report Shooting & stabbing Shots fired Merritt RCMP is investigating after a man allegedly discharged a firearm during an apparent neighbour dispute Saturday evening in Kane Valley. On January 9, 2021 just before 8pm, Merritt RCMP responded to a 9-1-1 emergency call after a Kane Valley resident alleged- ly fired a non-restricted firearm towards a neighbouring residence during a dis- pute. The Southeast District Emergency Response Team was immediately de- ployed to Merritt to assist, while front line officers responded to the scene to assess the situation. Local officers worked quickly to tac- tically extract a man and a woman from the home that had been fired upon, ac- cording Sgt. Josh Roda of the Merritt RCMP. The pair were unable to safely escape from the potential danger on their own. Police were aided by Central Interior Traffic Services & the Kamloops RCMP Integrated Road Safety Unit. The suspect, a 44-year-old Merritt man, was taken into custody at approxi- mately 2am by the RCMP Southeast Dist. ERT without further incident. A further search of the man’s residence led to the seizure of a shot gun. The BC Prosecution Service has approved criminal charges against Christopher Jonathan Skidmore including uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, unauthorized posses- sion of a firearm, careless use or storage of a firearm and unlawfully discharge a firearm. Police arrived to find that one of the two combatants had multiple stab wounds. The most serious of which was a punc- ture wound to their abdomen. The in- juries required immediate transport to Royal Inland Hospital and emergency surgery. The victim remains in hospital. The suspect was arrested on scene and also taken to hospital with minor injuries. Charges will be forwarded for Crown’s consideration. COVID-19 numbers in Int.
