Ghirardelli Square was founded in San Francisco in 1964, designed by Lawrence Halprin and William Wurster. Designed after the original Ghirardelli Factory, using the same industrial design qualities. The space is very well organized, the space being scattered with actual ghirardelli stores among other cafes or shops. The whole plaza faces mostly inwards but has spectacular views of the harbor from many points on the terracing plaza. The area has been created as an interactive space with plenty of tables and chairs, ready for the heavy foot traffic of tourist seasons. Ghirardelli square is a very popular tourist stop after walking through fisherman’s wharf. The Ghirardelli iron work sign is a focal point aside the tower in the square, inspired by the original Ghirardelli chocolate factory. The square originated as a project based off of taking over the old factory and turning it into a mix of retail and restaurants along side ghirardelli stores. In doing this they creating a renovated complex. This created a very open and lively space for people of all ages to come enjoy on vacation or just around the city. The renovation of the factory became very popular and one of the most successful of its type.
