Theorists

Andrew Goodwin:

Andrew Goodwin identifies 5 key aspects of music videos that we (the audience) should look for

• Thought beats- seeing the sound

• Narrative and performance

• The star image

• Relation of visuals to song

• Technical aspects of music video

Andrew Goodwin’s QuotesStructure, Voice and Mode of Address

Advertising, Repeatability and Authenticity

All these aspects according to Andrew Goodwin make for a successful music video

Importantly also is ‘Star Image’.• Meta narrative describes the development of

the star over time, this type of narrative helps the audience to relate to the artist and therefore relate to the video and the song.

This type of narrative has proven affective, Andrew Goodwin’s theory is an obvious success.

Technical AspectsThese type of aspect holds the music video

at it’s foundation, without clever technicality, a music video will fail to appear professional and believable.

Here are the Aspects:• Camera work• Movement• Angle• Mise-en –scene• Editing• Sound• Special Effects• Lighting

How will Andrew Goodwin’s theory be applied to my music video?

I feel alike Andrew Goodwin that the most important aspect of a music video is the appeal of the artist. If the artist isn’t popular or fails to spark attention in the music world both their work (the music) and the video’s will be ignored. It has been proved over time that the perceived ‘bad’ artist’s who stray away from the typical music conventions usually hit harder with an audience as they are shocked and intrigued.

The technical aspects I feel can be easily applied from the use of the college Media room where I have complete access to all the technical appliances that I need in order to create my music video.

TheoristsPete Fraser: Pete Fraser taught that music videos last the length of the song,

sometimes longer. They sometimes feature the artist and they sometimes tell a story.

History about music videos:• 1930′s

-This was the decade of experimentation.-Colours and shapes were found in time with music videos.-End of this era, Disney did similar ideas with Fantasia.

• Soundies- 1940’s in America found juke box TV’s for music videos-After the war came small films with soundtracks-The soundies died out as there was an objection to the sexual references involved.

• Scopitones-Came in 1960′s in France.-Similar to the soundies.

Pete FraserLooking at Pete Fraser’s theory about

the History of music video’s it is clear how the progression of music production has moulded and altered through the years to fit into the expectations of the audience.

His idea’s are very interesting and help me to understand why the media has to change. In my music video I will use Pete Fraser’s ideas to help me think about how I should portray my video- who my audience will be and what appropriate aspects I can add to fit in with todays society.

Is all publicity good publicity This question I feel is the million dollar question.

To me, I agree with the statement as any publicity is fed into the public's hungry mouths.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/6177516.stmThis link from the BBC fully discusses to pro’s and

con’s of publicity and it’s effect on whoever is involved. From reading through the article I have received different views on the statement but I still believe that publicity makes headlines ESPECIALLY the bad which is what will be in mind as my media project develops.

Britney Spears

At first, Britney Spears’ image was that of an ‘innocent’ and angelic girl, however the media through the years has helped along with her more raunchy style and sexualised song lyrics the “oops I did it again video” for example highlights her morph from ‘cute’ Britney to ‘crazy’ Britney.

more express rumours to do with Britney showing her in a negative light

Trouble ahead…

‘Reckless behaviour’ was what was described by the media.

“But after all the gloating and mocking in the media, the once virginal pop star has crossed the line of what will be tolerated - she shaved her head at the weekend.”

The press loved Birtney’s obvious downfall in behaviour however we must ask ourselves: How many people don’t remember Britney shaving off her head in 2007? None you’ll most likely find! The bad publicity sparked an uproar! Everyone was intrigued to know why Britney would commit such an act which only made her publicity stronger as her recent come-back into music settled her fans and made then feel comfortable in the knowledge that she was becoming herself again.
