And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”

Genesis 9:1 So God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them: “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.

Psalm 19:1–2 The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork. 2 Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge.

Adam named every living creatureGenesis 2:19 Out of the ground the LORD

God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name.

God named every star in the heavensPsalm 147:4 He counts the number of the stars; He calls them all by name.

19. Who came down to inspect the city and the tower?

Genesis 11:5–7 But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. 6 And the LORD said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them. 7 Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.”

20. What observation is made from the inspection?

6 And the LORD said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them.

21. Is the “us” in verse 7 the same as the Inspector mentioned in verse 5?

5 But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.

7 Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.”

22. Describe how the word “come” is used in verses 3, 4 and 7.

3 Then they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks

4 And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower

6 And the LORD said, “Indeed the people are one… 7 Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.”

23. When did the inspection occur? What is the significance?

8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city.

24. What action is taken and by whom?

They spoke different languages

They were scattered over all the earth

7 Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.” 8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city.

11:4 And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens…”

11:9 Therefore its name is called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.

בבל (bā·ḇěl) = man called it the “Gate to God”

בבל (bā·ḇěl) = God called it “confusion”

25. What additional action is taken?

26. Why is the scattering mentioned twice?

8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city. 9 Therefore its name is called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth; and from there the LORD

scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.

27. What was used to divide and scatter people in this judgment? Compare this event with Acts 2:5-12 and Revelation 5:9

9 Therefore its name is called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.

28. Why, do you think, the Babel narrative is included in the Bible?

2 Timothy 3:16–17 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
