SO, AFTER THE FLOOD…

GENESIS CH. 10The Table of Nations

GENESIS 10-11

We are nearing the end of the 1st. section of our 2 part division of the book of Genesis (chapters 1-11). We are in the post-diluvian age of the world. After chapter 11 starts the second division (chapters 12-50), from the deluge to the call of Abram..

ADAM CLARKE'S COMMENTARY

Eusebius and others state (from what authority we know not) that Noah was commanded of God to make a will and bequeath the whole of the earth to his three sons and their descendants in the following manner:

To Shem, all the East; To Ham, all Africa; To Japheth, the Continent of Europe with its

isles, and the northern parts of Asia.

CH. 10, THE TABLE OF NATIONS

Gen 10:1 This is the account of Shem, Ham and Japheth, Noah's sons, who themselves had sons after the flood.

Toledoth “Had sons after the flood,” not

b4/during.

TOLEDOT

1. Creation (1:1-2:3) 2. Tôledôt of the heavens and the earth (2:4-4:26) 3. Tôledôt of Adam (5:1-6:8) 4. Tôledôt of Noah (6:9-9:29) 5. Tôledôt of Shem, Ham, and Japheth (10:1-11:9) 6. Tôledôt of Shem (11:10-26) 7. Tôledôt of Terah (11:27-25:11) 8. Tôledôt of Ishmael (25:12-18) 9. Tôledôt of Isaac (25:19-35:29) 10. Tôledôt of Esau (36:1-8) 11. Tôledôt of Esau, father of the Edomites (36:9-37:1) 12. Tôledôt of Jacob (37:2-50:26)

THE PULPIT COMMENTARY

The ethnological register. I. PROCLAIMS THE UNITY OF THE RACE.

1. It declares all the successive families of mankind to have sprung from a common stock. Diverse as they flow are in their geographical situations, ethnic relations, physical capabilities, national peculiarities, according to the doctrine of this genealogical table they all trace their origin to Noah and his sons.

ONE BLOOD

Acts 17:24-27 "The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. 25 And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else. 26 From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live.

Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned--

GEN 10:9, JAMIESON, FAUSSET, AND BROWN

The adjunct "before the Lord" - literally, in the presence of Yahweh-has been variously interpreted. [The Septuagint adds Elohiym after Yahweh. By one class it is taken in a bad sense, as in the Septuagint [Enantion Kuriou], in the face, in spite of, against Yahweh. This also is the view of Josephus and the Jewish Targumists, who unite in regarding Nimrod as the originator of a systematic opposition to the true God. By another class it is believed to bear a good meaning….”

GE.10:25, THE EARTH WAS DIVIDED

Gen 10:25 Two sons were born to Eber: One was named Peleg, because in his

time the earth was divided; his brother was named Joktan.

GE.10:25, THE EARTH WAS DIVIDED

Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown says, “The natural view of these words implies a reference to a formal division of the earth, which, as has been thought, from several passages of Scripture (Deut 32:8; Acts 17:24-26), as well as from the probability of the thing itself, was made by Noah, acting under divine impulse, into three partitions, one of which was appropriated to each of his three sons. According to the Hebrew chronology, this authoritative distribution took place about a century after the deluge, most probably at the birth of Peleg, and his name was a memorial of that event. Other interpretations have been given of this passage. Some, rendering the words, 'the earth was cut into canals'….

GE.10:25, THE EARTH WAS DIVIDED

…Hebrew verb to cleave, to divide water-courses' (Job 38:25), says Cyril Graham, 'refers rather to a mechanical division of land, such as plowing or cutting, than to a political division. We have no doubt that this notice, short as it is, is a record of the first cutting of some of those canals which are found in such numbers between the Tigris and the Euphrates…

Others are of opinion that extensive landslips occurred-the sea bursting through many parts of the solid land and forming straits and gulfs, or separating continents, and that it was to such breaches 'the dividing of the earth' refers.

A third class suppose that the allusion is not to the general dispersion of Noah's descendants, but to a division in Eber's family-the Joktanidoe….

GML COMPASS, NEVER RAINED PRE-FLOOD?

You come to that conclusion by comparing Genesis 2:5-6 …to Genesis 7:4…

God had not sent rain upon the earth . . . But a mist used to rise from the earth and water the whole surface of the ground. —Genesis 2:5-6 I will send . . . rain on the earth forty days and forty nights; —Genesis 7:4

There is an interesting theory that the weather problems today may have stemmed from the atmospheric changes due to the mountains that formed as the continents separated—either during or just after the flood. This theory assumes that the animals on the earth were all from one piece of land for Noah to take on the ark…

GML COMPASS, NEVER RAINED PRE-FLOOD?

... There is some scientific evidence (that doesn't refute biblical teaching) that the seven major land masses were previously one large piece of land. Also, since the water God sent came from above AND below, there was apparently some kind of vapor canopy surrounding the earth. This water canopy fell, causing the flood, along with the water from the great deep (Genesis 7:11).

Since people lived much longer in those days, the vapor canopy protection from the sun could have contributed to this long life…

GEN 10:32, LOCAL FLOOD?

Gen 10:32 These are the clans of Noah's sons, according to their lines of descent, within their nations. From these the nations spread out over the earth after the flood.

If their were other “lines of descent, within their nations” that didn’t get off Noah’s barge, wouldn’t God have an obligation to mention them here?

If Noah’s flood was a local flood, was God ignorant of them, or their “lines of descent,” or is He avoiding mention of all the others who survived the local flood, or is He being deceptive? Cause it sure sounds like “From these the nations spread out over the earth after the flood.”

GEN 11:1-4

Gen 11:1-9 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. 2 As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.

3 They said to each other, "Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. 4 Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth."

BRICK OVENS IN IRAQ NOW

ARCHEOLOGY

German archaeologist Robert Koldewey in 1899… dug on the Babel site for some fourteen years and unearthed many of its features including the outer walls, inner walls, foundation of the Tower of Babel, Nebuchadnezzar's palaces and the wide processional roadway which passed through the heart of the city.

DAN 3:19, SEVEN TIMES HOTTER

C. Missler says, “Furnace: N. Iraq: brick furnaces, size of city block; pitch, sulfur; + bellows.”

Archeological S.B says, “One kiln discovered at Nippur (from approx. 2000 B.C.) is fashioned like a railway tunnel, with one end blocked and the other serving as an entrance…punishment by burning is well attested in the ancient Near East”

Jer 29:22…The Lord treat you like Zedekiah and Ahab, whom the king of Babylon burned in the fire.'

LOCATION OF THE TOWER OF BABEL?, FROM MAURY

Babylon lies 90 Kilometers south of Baghdad, and 10 Kilometers north of Hilla …The Iraqi government has launched a project to renovate the interior of the prophet Ezekiel's shrine in the small town of Kifl, south of Baghdad, and the country's Ministry for Tourism and Antiquities says it hopes to eventually repair and renovate other Jewish sites across the country.

This is believed to be the ancient location of the Tower of Babel.

BABEL= CONFUSION

OT:894, Babel (baw-bel'); from OT:1101; confusion; Babel (i.e. Babylon), including Babylonia and the Babylonian empire:

KJV - Babel, Babylon.

GEN 11:5-9 5 But the Lord came down to see the city and the

tower that the men were building. 6 The Lord said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other."

8 So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. 9 That is why it was called Babel — because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

GENESIS 11:7, TONGUES

Geneva Notes says, “By this great plague of the confusion of tongues appears God's horrible judgment against man's pride and vain glory.”

Paul quotes this in;

GENESIS 11:7, TONGUES

1 Cor 14:19-25 But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue. 20 Brothers, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults. 21 In the Law it is written:

"Through men of strange tongues and through the lips of foreigners I will speak to this people, but even then they will not listen to me," says the Lord. 22 Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers. 23 So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and some who do not understand or some unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind? 24 But if an unbeliever or someone who does not understand comes in while everybody is prophesying, he will be convinced by all that he is a sinner and will be judged by all,

GEN 5:3-32, ADAM TO SHEM

Gen 5:3-5 When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him Seth. 4 After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 5 Altogether, Adam lived 930 years, and then he died.

FLOOD STORIES IN EVERY REGION ON EARTH

“Native global flood stories are documented as history or legend in almost every region on earth. Old world missionaries reported their amazement at finding remote tribes already possessing legends with tremendous similarities to the Bible's accounts of the worldwide flood. H.S. Bellamy in Moons, Myths and Men estimates that altogether there are over 500 Flood legends worldwide. Ancient civilizations such as (China, Babylonia, Wales, Russia, India, America, Hawaii, Scandinavia, Sumatra, Peru, and Polynesia) all have their own versions of a giant flood.

These flood tales are frequently linked by common elements that parallel the Biblical account…”

ACTS 17:26, GEN 11

TODAY'S CREATION MOMENT DIFFERENT RACES, ONE BLOOD Listen Acts 17:26 "And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on

all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation…"

How did we get all of the different races on earth if we are all descended from Adam and Noah and his family?

Today's differing racial and cultural characteristics began at the separation of the world's population into different groups based upon language. This followed the affair at the Tower of Babel. Before this separation, the one population shared the genetic traits of all humanity. In other words, they had a common gene pool. After the separation into groups, each group contained only a part of the former gene pool. This means that each group had lost some of the genetic information. As one generation followed another, genetic information continued to be lost in each group and, in fact, is still being lost to this day.

Certain traits in each isolated group became highlighted. For example, the decreasing tendency to produce melanin in the skin gave rise to the Caucasians, the white people of Europe. Other traits like hair type and soft tissue characteristics became unique to various groups that we refer to as "races" today. Interestingly, interracial marriages produce offspring that recapture some of that genetic information lost by each race represented by their parents.

No matter what race we belong to, we all share the same feelings and desires. Our Creator invites each of us to take to heart the truth that the Son of God became one of us to restore us to our Creator through the forgiveness of sins.

PANGAEA

#3. Did Noah’s ark have anything to do with Pangaea?   Dear Compass, In a past GML you referenced Noah and how he obeyed God

even though it had never rained. I have heard this before in my Sunday School class when we studied Genesis, but now I can't find any verse to support it. What verse are you using?

ANSWER: You come to that conclusion by comparing Genesis 2:5-6, not

sent rain, to Genesis 7:4 will send rain (to flood). Genesis 2:5-6 God had not sent rain upon the earth . . . But a

mist used to rise from the earth and water the whole surface of the ground.

Genesis 7:4 I will send . . . rain on the earth forty days and forty nights;

This theory assumes that the animals on the earth were all from one piece of land for Noah to take on the ark. The terminology used by Jesus when He rebuked the wind/waves/storms (Luke 8:24) is the same wording/phrasing that is used to rebuke demons (Luke 4:35) and disease (Luke 4:39). So weather seems to be tied to Satan/sin. Therefore, we think that these theories are plausible and do not contradict scripture.

The study has revealed an unexpected lack of diversity within worldwide human mitochondrial lineages, despite high mutation rates, and this supports the idea that humanity is only a few thousand years old.

…it contains several interesting tenets: 1) there was a single dispersal of mankind with three main mitochondrial lineages interspersed within clans; 2) the dispersion was centered in the Middle East in the recent past; 3) the dispersion was essentially tribal in nature, with small groups pushing into previously uninhabited territory; and 4) genetic evidence indicates that male lineages are much more geographically specific than female lineages, with female migration rates up to eight times greater than males. This latter tenet is an expression of the Babel account in Genesis, where the initial, well-mixed population split up and migrated according to paternal lineage. The biblical model fits very well with data collected in these evolutionary studies.

The ICR team began an exploration of changes in mitochondrial DNA by collecting and culling publicly-available human DNA …. Eve 1.0, is nearly identical to the original mitochondrial sequence--that of Eve, the first woman and the mother of every person who has ever lived. And because the mitochondrial genome is subject to high mutation rates, the lack of significant worldwide variation is evidence for a young mitochondrial genome. ACTS AND FACTS

In Acts and Facts, May, 2008, pg. 6, Dr. Larry Vardiman, Director of Research at ICR, wrote “Mitochondrial DNA and a Recent Human Origin.”

Mitochondrial DNA and a Recent Human Origin by Larry Vardiman, Ph.D. * A team of scientists that includes Dr. Daniel Criswell of ICR has

recently completed a study of mitochondrial DNA and will be presenting its work at this summer's International Conference on Creationism. A mitochondrion is a cellular power plant that generates most of the chemical energy the cell needs to support its functions. Although most of a cell's DNA is contained in the nucleus, the mitochondrion has its own small DNA molecule and this DNA is passed down from mother to child. The study has revealed an unexpected lack of diversity within worldwide human mitochondrial lineages, despite high mutation rates, and this supports the idea that humanity is only a few thousand years old.

Mitochondrial DNA has been used to develop several models of human origins. The Recent African Origins hypothesis (RAO) is currently the most popular model for human evolution. Although the RAO model has a number of significant technical problems and makes some assumptions that conflict with a biblical perspective, it contains several interesting tenets: 1) there was a single dispersal of mankind with three main mitochondrial lineages interspersed within clans; 2) the dispersion was centered in the Middle East in the recent past; 3) the dispersion was essentially tribal in nature, with small groups pushing into previously uninhabited territory; and 4) genetic evidence indicates that male lineages are much more geographically specific than female lineages, with female migration rates up to eight times greater than males. This latter tenet is an expression of the Babel account in Genesis, where the initial, well-mixed population split up and migrated according to paternal lineage. The biblical model fits very well with data collected in these evolutionary studies.

The ICR team began an exploration of changes in mitochondrial DNA by collecting and culling publicly-available human DNA records to create a set of 827 high-quality sequences. From this, they constructed a consensus sequence called Eve 1.0. They continued their analysis by modeling human mitochondrial genetic history using Mendel's Accountant, a numerical program developed at ICR that can be used to mimic the accumulation of mutations in a population over time.

After analyzing the differences found among the sequences in their dataset, they discovered that more than 83 percent of the mitochondrial genome had not changed in all of human history, and in over 99 percent of the locations where a change has occurred, only a small minority of people carried that specific change. In other words, most changes that have occurred are minor and rare. On average, human mitochondrial DNA differs from the original Eve consensus sequence by only 21.6 nucleotides (a nucleotide is a "letter" in the DNA alphabet). This is a small number when one considers that there are more than 16,500 nucleotide letters in the human mitochondrial genome.

The authors claim, therefore, that the consensus sequence, Eve 1.0, is nearly identical to the original mitochondrial sequence--that of Eve, the first woman and the mother of every person who has ever lived. And because the mitochondrial genome is subject to high mutation rates, the lack of significant worldwide variation is evidence for a young mitochondrial genome. The complete paper, The "Eve" Mitochondrial Consensus Sequence, will be presented at the 6th International Conference on Creationism in Pittsburgh, PA, in August 2008.

QUESTION FOR THE DAY Dear Compass, In a past GML you referenced Noah and how he

obeyed God even though it had never rained. I have heard this before in my Sunday School class when we studied Genesis, but now I can't find any verse to support it. What verse are you using?

ANSWER: You come to that conclusion by comparing Genesis

2:5-6, not sent rain, to Genesis 7:4 will send rain (to flood).

This theory assumes that the animals on the earth were all from one piece of land for Noah to take on the ark.

So weather seems to be tied to Satan/sin. Therefore, we think that these theories are plausible and do not contradict scripture.      They came to Jesus and woke Him up, saying, "Master, Master, we are perishing!" And He got up and rebuked the wind and the surging waves, and they stopped, and it became calm. —Luke 8:24      But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet and come out of him!" And when the demon had thrown him down in the midst of the people, he came out of him without doing him any harm. —Luke 4:35

And standing over her, He rebuked the fever, and it left her; and she immediately got up and waited on them. —Luke 4:39

THIS IS BELIEVED TO BE THE ANCIENT LOCATION OF THE TOWER OF BABEL

Maury Babylon lies 90 Kilometers south of Baghdad, and 10 Kilometers north of Hilla the road to Babylon branches of the main Baghdad-Hilla highway. Heavy traffic flows on a four-lane road, which becomes two lanes without any slowing of traffic speeds. Army posts frequently block roads, always with armed soldiers halting traffic for inspections The Iraqi government has launched a project to renovate the interior of the prophet Ezekiel's shrine in the small town of Kifl, south of Baghdad, and the country's Ministry for Tourism and Antiquities says it hopes to eventually repair and renovate other Jewish sites across the country.
