April 30 - International Jazz Day Reserve Bank of India • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cut its Repo rate under liquidity adjustment facility (LAF)

(the rate at which it lends to banks) by 25 basis points to 6%, with immediate effect.

• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced that it hasn't yet approved Lakshmi Vilas Bank and Indiabulls Housing Finance's merger proposal.

• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has come out with guidelines for banks to set up new currency chests, which include minimum area of 1,500 square feet for strong room. − The RBI said that the new chests should have a processing capacity of 6.6 lakh pieces of

banknotes per day. − It added that for those situated in the hilly/ inaccessible places, capacity should be 2.1 lakh

pieces of banknotes per day.

• The government has retained the interest rate for General Provident Fund (GPF), Contributory Provident Fund and other related schemes at 8 per cent for the first quarter of current financial year.

• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has put into circulation 50 rupees denomination banknotes signed by RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das. − The design of these notes is similar in all respects to 50 banknotes in Mahatma Gandhi new

series.

• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced that it has not issued any direction on a 5-day working week for commercial banks.

• The Bimal Jalan committee formed to study the RBI's capital structure is likely to identify excess reserves of up to ₹3 lakh crore, Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BofAML) said. − Capping overall reserves at 20% from 25.5% will release ₹1.96 lakh crore, it added.

• Based on the recommendation of 2nd Narasimham Committee, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has divested its entire stake in National Housing Bank (NHB) and the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD).

• The Supreme Court has directed the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to disclose its inspection reports on banks to allow people to assess their health.

• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced it is going to issue new ₹20 denomination banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series.

State Bank of India • India's largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) cut the lending rates by a marginal 5 basis points

across all tenors with effective from April 10, a move which is likely to provide some respite to home loan borrower. − The revised one-year marginal cost of funds-based lending rate (MCLR) stands at 8.50% down

from 8.55% earlier. Other Banks • Beating private sector lender ICICI Bank, state-run Bank of Baroda (BoB) has become India's 3rd

largest bank after its merger with Dena Bank and Vijaya Bank came into effect on 1st April 2019. − With a total business of about ₹15 trillion, the merged entity is the 3-largest lender in India,

after State Bank of India (SBI) and HDFC Bank.

• The board of Lakshmi Vilas Bank approved a share swap acquisition by housing finance firm Indiabulls Housing Finance. The Chennai-headquartered bank has total assets of more than ₹40,400 crore while Indiabulls has an asset base of ₹1.32 lakh crore.

• Public sector lender Canara Bank and its life insurance partner Canara HSBC Oriental Bank of Commerce Life Insurance have announced the launch of 'Webassurance'.

Insurance • The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) set up a 13 member

committee to review regulatory framework on micro insurance, and to recommend measures to increase demand for such products. Head of the committee: Suresh Mathur (IRDAI's Executive Director)

Supreme Court • Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Supreme Court has directed the Election Commission to

increase Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) verification from 1 EVM per constituency to 5 randomly selected EVMs.

• The Supreme Court imposed a fine of 20 lakh rupees on the West Bengal government for imposing a 'virtual' ban on the public screening of the satirical film Bhobishyoter Bhoot in the state.

• The Supreme Court has banned all mining activities along the Kaziranga National Park and catchment area of rivers originating in Karbi Anglong Hills in Assam.

• BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay has filed a PIL in Supreme Court seeking direction to the Centre to ascertain the feasibility of linking Aadhaar with social media accounts.

High Courts and Sessions Courts • Madras High Court has issued an interim direction to the Centre to prohibit the download of

Chinese mobile application TikTok, stating it hosts inappropriate content, including pornography, which is available for access to children. − Chinese video-sharing application TikTok has been removed from Google Play Store and

Apple App Store in India, after the government's direction. − The Madras High Court lifted its ban on the downloads of video-sharing app TikTok after the

company said there's technology in place to ensure nude/obscene content is not uploaded.

• The Madras High Court in a ruling stated the term 'Bride' as per the Hindu Marriage Act also refers to transwomen and not just someone born as a woman.

Election Commission • Election Commission has barred the political parties, candidates and other organizations from

publishing advertisement in print media on the poll day and one day prior to poll day in all the election phases unless approved by it.

• The Election Commission has banned the release of PM Modi's biopic starring Vivek Oberoi till the Lok Sabha elections, a day before its release.

Central Government • The government is planning to link Social Media accounts with Mobile Numbers or official

identities like Aadhaar or Passport in a bid to control trolls and spread of fake news.

• The Union Cabinet has given its approval to create one post of Deputy Comptroller and Auditor General (Coordination, Communication and Information System) in the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India.

• The Union Cabinet has approved the continuation of the GSLV Phase - 4 programmes consisting of 5 GSLV flights during the period from 2021 to 2024.

States • The Goa government has extended the retirement age for doctors working in its institutions from

60 to 62.

• The 75th anniversary of the Battle of Kohima was recently observed by the Nagaland government with representatives from the UK and Japan. − Theme - 'Remembrance, Reconciliation and Rebirth'.

• Himachal Pradesh celebrated 72nd Himachal Day on 15th April 2019.

Personalities • The birth anniversary of nationalist politician Babu Jagjivan Ram was observed on April 5 as

• The 1st vote of 2019 Lok Sabha elections was cast in Arunachal Pradesh's Lohitpur by service voters.

Defence and National Security • In a major initiative to tackle terror, radicalization, and over ground terror activities in Jammu &

Kashmir, the Centre constituted a high-level Multi-Disciplinary Terror Monitoring Group (TMG) comprising a host of Central agencies.

• The United States has approved the sale of 24 multi-role MH-60 'Romeo' Seahawk helicopters to India at an estimated cost of $2.6 billion.

• State-owned Garden Reach Ship Builders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE) has become the “1st Indian shipyard” to build and deliver 100 warships. − The 100th warship ‘IN LCU L-56’ has been handed over to the Indian Navy. − GRSE had handed over its 99th warship, ‘ICGS Priyadarshini’, an advanced ‘Fast Patrol

Vessel’ to the Indian Coast Guard.

• The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) was partially removed from 3 of 9 districts of Arunachal Pradesh but would remain in force in the areas bordering Myanmar.

• The 2-day per week ban on movement of civilian vehicles on Jammu-Srinagar-Baramulla national highway for facilitating safe passage of security convoys came into effect from April 7.

• The 6th edition of the joint military training exercise between the Indian Army and the Sri Lankan Army, Exercise Mitra Shakti concluded in Sri Lanka.

• Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was celebrating its 54th Valour Day on April 9.

• The Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) has handed over 6 indigenously built Dhanush artillery guns to the Army. − Dhanush is the 1st indigenously built 155mm x 45mm calibre long-range artillery gun with a

strike range of 38-kilometre.

• The 3-day exercise, ‘Bold Kurukshetra–2019’, was conducted between India and Singapore at Babina Cantonment (Jhansi).

• A new state-of-the-art, Virtual Reality Centre (VRC) to provide a major boost to indigenous warship design capabilities of the Navy was inaugurated by Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba in New Delhi.

• India has successfully test-fired 1st indigenously designed and developed long-range sub-sonic cruise missile 'Nirbhay' from a test range in Odisha.

• In the wake of the Pulwama terror attack, the government has granted emergency powers to the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force to procure weapons and military hardware in order to enhance their operational preparedness along the border with Pakistan.

• Indian Naval Ships Kolkata and Shakti will arrive at Qingdao in China to participate in the International Fleet Review (IFR) as part of 70th Anniversary celebrations of People's Liberation Army (Navy).

• The Indian Navy launched guided missile destroyer Imphal at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders in Mumbai.

• The Indian Army has claimed to have sighted "mysterious footprints" of a Yeti, a mythical creature of folklore in Nepal.

Committees/Commissions • The National Green Tribunal (NGT) formed a committee to look into the alleged erosion of

Yamuna floodplain due to movement of heavy vehicles in Haryana's Sonipat district.

• The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has formed a Central Monitoring Committee to prepare and enforce a national plan to make over 350 river stretches pollution free across the country.

Schemes/Initiatives • President Ram Nath Kovind launched ‘Veer Parivar App’, a mobile application for families of

CRPF personnel killed in the line of duty.

• A 35-member women police team named 'Sthree Shakthi' was launched in Andhra Pradesh's Visakhapatnam.

• In a first, the Indian Army began recruiting women jawans by releasing an advertisement calling for women to join as Soldier General Duty (Women Military Police).

Summit/Conference • Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu was visited to Lucknow, during which he is the chief guest at

National Cardiology Conference 2019 was held at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of medical sciences.

• Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Durga Shankar Misra inaugurated a seminar on Greenery and Landscaping in New Delhi.

• The International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT) is organizing a NuGen Mobility Summit, 2019, at Manesar, NCR, from 27th to 29th November 2019.

• The biannual Army Commanders’ Conference began in New Delhi.

• On this occasion, the Central Council for Research in Homeopathy (CCRH) was organizing a 2-day convention in New Delhi. Theme - Linking research with education and clinical practice.

• The 4th Resilient Cities Asia-Pacific 2019 Congress was organized by International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) and hosted by South Delhi Municipal Corporation in New Delhi.

• The 5th Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) Media Summit on Climate Action and Disaster Preparedness was held in Kathmandu (Nepal). Theme: “Media Solutions for Sustainable Future: Saving Lives, Building Resilient Communities”.

• The 2nd Belt and Road Forum (BRF) was held in Beijing, China.

• Saudi Arabia is going to host the 15th annual G20 Leaders' Summit in 2020 during 21st and 22nd November 2019, in its capital Riyadh.

Agreement/Deal/Signed • During the state visit of the President Ram Nath Kovind to Bolivia 9 MoUs were signed.

• India has signed a MoU with the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development Consultancy Service (NABCONS) for setting up the India-Africa Institute of Agriculture and Rural Development (IAIARD) in Malawi, a landlocked country in southeastern Africa.

• The All India Tennis Association has signed an MoU with Serbian Tennis Federation to train Indian junior players under Serbian coaches.

• The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) have signed an MoU to map, validate and protect smaller wetlands in the coastal region and restore them through coastal livelihood programmes.

• The union cabinet has approved cooperation agreement between India and Denmark in the field of renewable energy with focus on offshore wind energy.

• IIT Hyderabad has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Japanese firm Terra Drone Corporation and its Indian subsidiary to set up a 1st-of-its-kind Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (Drones).

• A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the Ministry of AYUSH and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) for cooperation in research and education in areas of traditional systems of medicine and its integration with modern science.

• The United Nations and the European Union (EU) have signed a joint framework aimed at strengthening partnership in counter-terrorism efforts.

Meet/Visit • The 7th Foreign Office consultations between India and Italy were held in New Delhi.

• Alexey Volin met Information and Broadcasting Secretary Amit Khare in New Delhi. − During the meeting, it was mutually agreed that an annual Indo-Russian Forum for Media

Cooperation be organized alternately in India and Russia to institutionalize the process of cooperation between the two countries in the media and entertainment sector.

• India and Sri Lanka have agreed to increase cooperation in security and defence spheres in several areas, including regional security, curbing drug smuggling and human trafficking. − The issues came up for discussion when Defence Secretary Sanjay Mitra called on Sri Lankan

President Maithripala Sirsena in Colombo during his official visit.

• India and Pakistan held a technical meeting to discuss the modalities for the Kartarpur corridor.

• India has convened a meeting of 25 developing member nations of the World Trade Organization (WTO) on May 13-14 in New Delhi.

• US President Donald Trump is going to visit Japan next month and become the 1st world leader to meet Crown Prince Naruhito after he's crowned Japan's new emperor on May 1. − Naruhito's 85-year-old father, Emperor Akihito, is ending his three-decade reign on April 30 by

abdicating.

• Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met Indian Navy officers at the Naval Commanders' Conference in New Delhi to discuss security challenges faced by the country.

• North Korean leader Kim Jong-un visited to Russia by train for his 1st meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. − Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un began their 1st-ever

talks in the Pacific port city of Vladivostok.

• US President Donald Trump has accepted Queen Elizabeth's invitation to make a state visit to the UK from June 3-5.

• Nepal’s President Bidya Devi Bhandari has left on a 9-day state visit to China. − During the visit she will attend the 2nd Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in

• Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman was visited to Bishkek (capital of Kyrgyzstan) to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Defence Ministers' Meet.

Fund • India has offered to provide relief assistance to Nepal in the wake of the storm that killed at least

27 people.

• Saudi Arabia is going to provide $1 billion to Iraq to build a sports city.

• The National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) and global transport infrastructure operator Roadis will jointly set up a platform to invest up to $2 billion of equity in road projects in India.

• The UN owes $38 million (over ₹ 264 crore) to India for peacekeeping operations as of March 2019, the highest it owes to any country, Secretary-General António Guterres said in a report while expressing concern over the body's financial situation.

• Pakistan has reached an "agreement in principle" with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) over a bailout program which will be worth $6-$8 billion.

• Saudi Arabia and the UAE announced financial support of 3 billion dollars for the people of Sudan following the overthrow of longtime leader Omar al-Bashir.

• Britain pledged £4 million to support Global Anti-Slavery Projects, from sexually exploited girls in Ethiopia to migrant workers in Malaysia and Mauritius.

• The Home Ministry has ordered for advance release of financial assistance of Rs. 1086 crore for four states to assist them in undertaking preventive and relief measures in response to cyclonic storm FANI.

Economy • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) lowered India’s growth by 40 basis points to 7.2 per cent in

fiscal year 2019-20. − The growth rate in FY 2020-21 likely to be 7.3 per cent.

• The World Bank has said it expects India's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to accelerate to 7.5% in fiscal year 2019-20.

• The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has cut India's growth forecast for 2019-20 from 7.5% to 7.3%, citing loss of momentum. − It has further projected the country to grow at 7.5% in 2020-21, supported by the continued

recovery of investment and robust consumption.

• India's annual retail inflation climbed to a 5-month high of 2.86% in March from 2.57% in February, government data showed.

• India's wholesale inflation, measured by Wholesale Price Index (WPI), accelerated to a 3-month high of 3.18% in March.

• The world's largest crypto-currency exchange Binance has launched its own blockchain titled 'Binance Chain' to rival Ethereum network. − Binance Chain will allow crypto startups to issue coins directly on the company's platform and

will serve as the basis of Binance's planned decentralized exchange.

Companies/Industry • American multinational technology company Google has officially shut down its social media

platform Google+ launched in 2011 to rival with other social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter.

• To curb the spread of fake news ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Freeware, cross-platform messaging and Voice over IP (VoIP) service WhatsApp launched a fact-checking service titled 'Checkpoint' tipline in collaboration with New Delhi-based startup PROTO.

• American multinational technology company Apple has begun manufacturing the iPhone 7 in India in Bengaluru, making it the 3rd iPhone model being manufactured locally in the country. − The iPhone 7 joins the iPhone SE and iPhone 6s, which are also assembled locally by Apple.

• US healthcare giant Johnson & Johnson's (J&J) baby shampoo has failed quality tests by Drugs Control Organization of Rajasthan, which said "harmful ingredients" were found in it.

• American multinational technology company Microsoft was celebrated it's 44th birthday on Apr-5.

• World's richest man Jeff Bezos-led Amazon has confirmed it plans to launch a constellation of over 3,200 low-Earth orbit satellites for high-speed broadband connectivity. − "Project Kuiper" is aimed at communities that lack basic access to broadband internet globally,

the e-commerce giant said.

• Facebook-owned WhatsApp has agreed to comply with RBI norms to store data in servers located within India. − This comes days after the RBI revealed WhatsApp's UPI-based payments service 'WhatsApp

Pay' was still stuck in beta mode for not complying with the data localization norms.

• Google parent Alphabet has beat Amazon to launch one of the 1st commercial drone delivery businesses. Wing, the company's drone delivery arm, was testing drone delivery in Australia since 2014 and delivered medicines, chocolate to 3,000 homes in the last 18 months.

• Adani Enterprises has received the Australian government's approval for Groundwater Management Plan for the controversial Carmichael coal mine.

• India's Mahindra & Mahindra has signed a deal with American carmaker Ford Motor's Indian unit to jointly develop midsize Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) in India.

• US tech giant Microsoft has briefly topped $1 trillion in market capitalization for the 1st time after beating its quarterly earnings estimates. With this, Microsoft became world's 3rd trillion dollar company.

• Meat processor JBS has announced that its Seara processed foods unit became the 1st company in Brazil authorized by India to sell chicken products in the Asian nation.

• Social networking site Facebook has announced ban on personality quiz apps on its platform.

• IT service management company Financial Software Services (FSS) has launched real time voice banking platform titled FSS voice commerce.

• Walmart-owned Flipkart is partnering with Axis Bank or HDFC Bank will also launch it's own credit card later this quarter.

Stock Market • Alibaba-backed Paytm's subsidiary Paytm Money has received approval from Securities and

Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to begin stock broking services to let its users buy shares through the platform.

• India's benchmark index Sensex ended above 39,000 for the 1st time ever.

• Hong Kong’s equity market has overtaken Japan to be the world’s 3rd largest in value, behind only the U.S. and mainland China.
