GLEN ELLYN – Beforeeven crossing off a day on thenew 2015 calendar, there arealready plenty of stories brew-ing in Glen Ellyn. Here’s alook at the headlines to watchfor in 2015:

1. Butting headsWhat we know: The College

of DuPage was under intensepublic scrutiny for the latterhalf of 2014. An email fromcollege President RobertBreuder leaked, suggestingtrustees publicly lobby for $20million in state funds theydidn’t necessarily need. TheBoard of Trustees censured a

member for providing inaccu-rate information to the publicabout the email. The FacultyAssociation voted no confi-dence in Breuder. Watchdoggroups have pored throughfinancial documents seekingfurther wrongdoing.

What’s next: The collegewill likely remain in thespotlight at least throughApril. Three of the board’sseven trustee seats are up forelection this year, and there’sa crowd of candidates vying

for a seat. The election couldcompletely change the face ofthe board.

2. Daily grindWhat we know: Glen Ellyn

School District 41 has beengathering input from thepublic on whether or not to in-troduce full-day kindergarten.

Because of space limita-tions, implementing full-daykindergarten would require

additions to existing schoolsor the construction of a newschool. District officials havesaid a referendum would beneeded to fund the project.

What’s next: Administra-tors will continue collectinginformation and make a for-mal presentation to the Boardof Education in the comingmonths. If approved, the goalwould be to have full-daykindergarten introduced bythe beginning of next schoolyear.

3. Scaling backWhat we know: The village

of Glen Ellyn has been talkingabout adding several newbuildings in the near future,including a police departmentand a salt storage facility,because of space limitationsand necessary upgrades. Thepolice department would beconstructed at Panfish Parkand the salt storage facilitywould be built on the publicworks department grounds.

4. Downtown developmentsWhat we know: The Opus

Group presented a proposalfor a new development at theproperty owned by GiescheShoe Store, which closed inOctober.

The plan would include8,400 square feet of retailspace and 125 apartments, aswell as a parking garage with76 or 202 spaces, depending onhow many levels the villagewants for the facility.

It would take up the vil-lage’s Main Street parking lotand the St. Petronille CatholicChurch parking lot.

There is no dollar amountlisted on the incentives re-quested from the Opus Group.Items include the donationof the Main Street parkinglot, any rededication costsrequired at parking lots, theland-lease agreement withSt. Petronille and financialresponsibility for the newparking garage.

What’s next: The boardindicated it would be in favorof moving forward with theproposal. Village adminis-trators are working with theOpus Group on the project.

5. Boathouse rebuildingWhat we know: The Glen

Ellyn Park District selectedconsultants to draw up con-struction plans for improve-ments to Lake Ellyn Parkand the boathouse as part ofits 2012 master plan.

The project will includethe historic restoration ofthe boathouse, replacementof the park’s west side trailsand playground, landscapeenhancement, stabilizationof the lake’s shores andinstallation of permeablesidewalks.

What’s next: Final plansare expected in the next fewmonths, with the project tobe bid out in April. Construc-tion will begin in July and isexpected to finish in 2016.

6. Green acresWhat we know: Voters

approved a $2.95 million ref-erendum in November for theButterfield Park District topurchase a 2.24-acre propertyat Routes 53 and 56.

The property had been

considered as a location

for a gas station before the

purchased it for $1.5 million

to prevent such a develop-

ment.

The district will buy the

property for $1.5 million. Of

the remaining money, $500,000

will be used to clean up the

site and $985,000 will go to

applying for grants and main-

taining existing district parks.

What’s next: District offi-

cials have said they want to

get started on the project in

early 2015.

The first step would be to

buy the property and continue

with the additional plans.

This year was an exciting year for DuPagePads, as 392people obtained permanent housing, 145,501 meals were served,44,284 nights of shelter were provided and 1,360 individualswere assisted, including 241 children in 144 families. One ofthese families was Angel’s, and she shares her journey below.

“With nowhere to go, mychildren and I walked toDuPagePads. With a lump inmy throat, tears in my eyesand my pride in my purse, Itold them, ‘I need help.’”

A myriad of challenges ledAngel to this point. She had been through an abusive marriage,suffered health complications, lost her $42,000-a-year job and nolonger had a place to call home for her and her children. Angeldescribes her life at that time as being, “downright depressing!”

Angel said the staff at DuPagePads offered her a helping hand.“They were there to root for me – that type of cheering sec-

tion helps you face your giants.”In February 2012, Angel moved into her own apartment. “My

case manager greeted us at the door and said, ‘welcome home.’”Tears welled in Angel’s eyes as she looked around her fur-

nished apartment. “There were bags and bags. They had takencare of every detail, from light bulbs to dishes and everythingin between.”

Angel and her children had been doing well until thissummer when Angel faced immense pain, which called for anemergency room visit and immediate surgery. Her son, whohad accompanied her in the ambulance, was told by the doctorhe could not stay overnight. “I was hysterical and with no rela-tives to call, I contacted my DuPagePads case manager.”

Angel’s case manager showed up to the hospital at 4:30 a.m.to pick up her son. Following the surgery, she brought Angel’schildren back to visit her and assured them their mother wasgoing to be OK. Angel said DuPagePads has “been my rockthrough this trying time.”

“From a ride to the grocery store to providing cleaning sup-plies, DuPagePads does whatever they can to help. Because of DuP-agePads, my children can stay at their school in Naperville; thereis one less family that is homeless, one less child on the streets. Tomy DuPagePads family, words cannot express the gratitude andadmiration I have for you! Thank you for never letting go!”

Park District stockpiling$900,000 to tackle projects

GLEN ELLYN – The GlenEllyn Park District announcedin December that its 2015 bud-get includes a projection of$900,000 in reserve funds forlarge projects expected in thecoming years.

The budget was passed atthe district’s Dec. 16 Board ofCommissioners meeting.

About five years ago, theboard decided to make mini-mizing expenses and maximiz-ing revenues a priority, ac-cording to Executive DirectorDave Harris.

In the early 2000s, it under-took several significant proj-ects that provided growth orexpansion, but increased ex-penses, including: the construc-tion of Ackerman Sports & Fit-ness Center, the purchase andrenovation of Maryknoll Park,the renovation of Main Street

Recreation Center and the pur-chase and renovation of SpringAvenue Recreation Center.

The decision to stockpilesurpluses was made becauseof concerns the district wasn’tpaying enough attention to thelong-term care of its assets.

“You don’t want to have aplayground you can’t main-tain over 20 years,” Harrissaid. “This allows the Park Dis-trict to have funds available tomaintain its assets without… seeking a tax increase forthese improvements.”

A finance committee wasdesignated to create an assetreplacement plan through2035 and to determine howmuch money would be nec-essary to address all needsduring that time. Harris esti-mated the improvements willcost an average of $600,000 peryear. District fees for sports

GLEN ELLYN – A martialarts club in Glen Ellyn hasbeen teaching self defense for40 years.

The Glen Ellyn Aikido Clubcelebrated four decades ofclasses in 2014. The classes areoffered at College of DuPage.

Club member Paul Simp-son, who’s been practicingaikido about a year, said “ai-kido” translates literally to“the way of being in spiritualharmony.” It was developedafter World War II, he said,and uses an opponent’s en-ergy and momentum againsthim or her to attack withoutcausing harm, according to a

club news release.“Aikido is a particularly de-

fensive martial art,” said Mat-thias Lynch, chief instructorof the Glen Ellyn Aikido Club.

Lynch has been doing aiki-do more than two decades. Hesaid the group practices fivedays a week, including Mon-day and Wednesday evenings,

Tuesday and Thursday morn-ings and Saturday mornings.

In honor of the 40th anniver-sary, the club had a seminarin September, at which Lynchinvited one of his instructorsfrom the Twin Cities to comeand teach some techniques.

During aikido practice ses-sions, students do not talk but

listen to the instructor to learnas much as they can.

“Practice time is preciousand short,” Lynch said.

Lynch started practicingaikido in 1988. At the time, hewas doing karate and lookingfor another martial art to takeup. He decided to participatein an aikido practice.

“I went in there and I wasvery impressed when I askedthe teacher some questionsand I gave it a try,” Lynch said.

He continued practicing,moved to Chicago in 2000 andjoined the Glen Ellyn AikidoClub, where he’s been the chiefinstructor for eight years.

The group will provide ademonstration at North Cen-tral College in February.

“We’re not going to be gen-erating these huge surpluses

over the years by any means,”Harris said.

The district has had an op-erating surplus for the pastfew years, he said, and 2015’sis the largest he expects.

Before this process started,the district operated closer toa balanced budget, Harris said,with a maximum surplus of$200,000.

Some of the needs to bemet with the $900,000 surplus

include the replacement ofoutdated heating and coolingunits in existing buildings, themaintenance of athletic fields,

the purchase of new play-ground equipment, parking lotrepairs, pool filter installationsand improvements at Lake El-

lyn and Ackerman parks.Board President Gary Mayo

said the surplus is good newsfor the district’s future and itsassets.

“We will be able to internal-ly reinvest and fund the neededreplacement, renovation andimprovement of our existingparks and facilities while con-tinuing to maintain our lowPark District tax levy,” Mayosaid in a district news release.

As the temperatures con-

tinue to drop, those looking for

outdoor recreational activities

are often limited.

Looking for a sport to play

this winter? Catch the Plat-

form tennis fever sweeping the

area. Platform tennis is a great

winter, spring and fall activity

played by men and women of

all ages.

The game is a racquet sport,

derived from tennis, usually

played two-against-two. The

court is one-third the size of a

traditional tennis court and is

surrounded by a wire fence. Un-

like its tennis counterpart, play-

ing the ball off the fence is not

just allowed, but encouraged.

The game is played with special

paddles that differ in size and

shape from tennis racquets.

“It really attracts a lot of

tennis players who want to

get outside during the winter

months,” said Laura Berendt,

platform tennis professional

with the Glen Ellyn Park Dis-

trict.

She said the sport attracts

tennis players, racquet ball

players and squash players of

all ages. Berendt said the game

is big on the North Shore and

is spreading into the West-

ern Suburbs. Although played

outside, Berendt said there is

enough movement, players

stay warm.

The Glen Ellyn Park Dis-

trict’s platform tennis facility,

845 Pershing Ave., features

four courts and a modern pad-

dle hut that offers a view of the

games. A heating system keeps

the deck ice free, allowing year-

round play. Court lighting en-

sures players can continue to

enjoy the game after sunset.

Whatever your skill or fit-

ness level, the game provides

a combination of outdoor exer-

cise, concentration, athleticism

and fun.

“It’s a small court, so you

can talk to your opponents

face-to-face,” Berendt said.

“It’s really a social sport.”

The park district has about 250

people involved in platform ten-

nis, be it through travel leagues

or in-house leagues. For more

LA GRANGE – When you’re crav-ing the taste of Italy, there’s no need toempty your savings account on planetickets and hotel stays. Just head todowntown La Grange and visit LaBuona Vita to experience delicious,homemade Italian fare.

On a stormy December evening,my brother and I decided we were inthe mood for a home-cooked, heartyItalian meal, and decided to give LaBuona Vita a try.

Eager to satisfy our appetites, weperused the long-sheet menu temptingus with everything from steak andlamb chops to seafood. To open themeal, we ordered fried calamari, fullyaware of the amount of calories wewere about to consume.

Once we’d savored the well-pre-pared appetizer, our server broughtour dinner salads and two generouslyportioned pasta dishes.

My fellow diner chose the LinguineViareggio, featuring linguine withmussels, baby clams and scallopsdressed in a lively pomodoro sauce.The meal, according to my brother,had the perfect amount of spicy kick.

While my taste buds usually cravea heap of spices, I decided to order theRigatoni Emilio – pairing the pastawith fresh mozzarella, homemademarinara and garlic. The sauce waslight and tasty, a great complement tothe creamy mozzarella.

After we consumed every last,delectable bite of our food, both mybrother and I leaned back and sighed,knowing full well not one more ouncecould make its way to our stomachs –we were stuffed.

The restaurant also featuresgluten-free recipes including pastadishes, so no one has to miss out onthe pleasures of Italian dining. Andthe elegant bar offers craft beer on tap,along with select wines from aroundthe globe. The bar is a focal pointalong the sleek dining room, wherelarge windows look onto the cityscape.

During our next visit, the dinnermenu won’t be the only one on myradar, because I’m leaving room forone of the tempting dessert selections:La Buona Vita’s Molten ChocolateCake. It promises a warm chocolatecake with a gooey center served withvanilla ice cream and raspberry sauce.

On our visit, we found the foodalone was enough to warrant a returntrip, but the service added to theexperience. Not only was our serverattentive and extremely helpful when

it came to ordering our meals, but ourwater glasses never dipped below halffull. The staff made it a pamperingdinner.

So the next time you’re yearning

for pasta or tiramisu, a taste of Italy isas close as La Buona Vita in the heartof La Grange.

State run: Having to battlethrough injuries during hishigh school career, Single-ton had everything cometogether at the perfect time asthe senior won the Class 2A3,200-meter title last springby eight seconds. He finishedwith a time of 9:19.48 and later

placed fifth in the 1,600.

The forward scored 20points in the tourney openeragainst Willowbrook, 19 againstHoffman Estates and 17 versusNorthridge Prep. Pierce, theGlen Ellyn Bank & TrustAthlete of the Week, spoke withGlen Ellyn Suburban Life sportsreporter Scott Schmid about theaward and the keys to a strongsecond half for the team.

Schmid: What were youroverall thoughts about how thetournament played out for yourteam [2-2 mark]?

Pierce: It was a bit of adisappointing tournament, wewere definitely thinking thatwe could win that one. But Ican’t be too disappointed, welost two close games to twogood teams. Throughout thetournament, I saw some in-credible growth from everyoneon the team. The first game, wewere incredibly unbalanced inscoring and by the last game,

we had three or four guys indouble figures. That’s a sign weare coming together as a team.

Schmid: Was the individualrecognition nice?

Pierce: It is always a nicehonor, but I would much rath-er have won the tournament.I don’t want to take awayfrom the honor, it’s always anice honor to be named to theall-tournament team. This ismy third time [being selectedto the all-tournament team]and I was really excited thefirst time, now it’s more aboutwinning.

Schmid: What is a key forgetting on a role as a team inJanuary?

Pierce:Five of our six losseshave been within a couple ofbaskets here and there. Coachalways tells us that it doesn’tjust come down to the final pos-sessions, that every possessionmatters. Just stringing togethera full game, we haven’t donethat all year. That’s the most ex-citing thing for us, if we stringtogether a full game, we knowwe can hang with anybody.

Alex Passi led all scorerswith 20 points and JustinPierce added 19. Aidan Gouldalso checked into double fig-ures with 11.

A day earlier, the Hilltop-pers lost 50-42 to St. Francis.On Dec. 23, the squad defeatedNorthridge Prep 45-36 behind17 points from Pierce. Passihad 13 and Kalen Starkey fin-ished with 10.

Pierce was named to theall-tournament team.

The Raiders began the Ro-meoville tournament Dec. 26with a 64-62 loss to Oak Forestand then fell by a 56-38 mar-gin to Joliet Catholic a daylater.

The Raiders went 2-2 andfinished in seventh place atthe Bill Neibch Falcon Clas-sic hosted by Wheaton NorthHigh School.

The team concluded thetournament with a 53-30 victo-ry against Jacobs on Dec. 27.Ivana Markovic had 18 points,Payton Carli scored nine andJenna Brambora and SydneyBauman each had eight.

A day earlier, GlenbardSouth lost 47-39 to Herseydespite 17 points from Bau-man.

The Raiders also dropped

a 49-42 decision to Downers

Grove North on Dec. 23. Car-

The Hilltoppers came infourth place with a score of136.00 at the Tumble for theTroops Invitational hosted byOswego High School on Dec.27.

Amber Broucek was fifthin the all-around competitionwith a total of 35.725. SaraDeStefano was 11th with a33.625.

Broucek was fourth onboth the balance beam andfloor. DeStefano came ineighth on the balance beamand Amanda Rosch was ninth

on the uneven bars.
