Tony De Frates

VERNON COXPast Club Chairman Ian Keers has received the sad news that Vernon Cox has died. Ian says: “Vernon was very active in the Club for many years, running the Concours and later handling liaison with the DVLA”. Tony De Frates recalls that Vernon owned a 1952 300 Adenauer and several other cars including a brace of Austin Atlantics. We hope to have an obituary in a future Gazette.

Letter of the Month

As a thank you (and as an incentive for even greater efforts) we like to choose a letter of the month. Meguiar’s have kindly agreed to sponsor this and the Member whose letter is selected receives a Wash & Wax car care kit.

SPEED LIMITERSDear Catherine [Barlow, Membership Secretary],I would like you to alert Members to an EU proposal to put speed limiters in cars from 2022. I believe this to be insane and would urge all Members to sign the petition https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/251938/ Otherwise it will be the end of nice or prestigious cars as there will be no point having them.

Martin Odell, via e-mail

Editor’s note: Martin is referring to an EU proposal to impose what it calls ‘Intelligent Speed Assistance’ on all new vehicles from 2022. This matter has been referred to the Club’s Board of Directors.

The Director who liaises with the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs, Phil Greaves, has referred it to that body which responded that this is ‘of no relevance to current, or indeed immediately future, historic vehicles’. Of course the Club is not concerned only with historic vehicles.

‘OSCAR’ RIP

Comfort in the rear! Arriving in style.

Dear Chris,Please pass on my thanks for all the kind messages from Members following the sad demise of ‘Oscar’.

He has been a regular attendee at many Club events over the last 11 years, either with ‘his’ W123 estate or in the back of my 190SL. Now I have the job of finding a new owner for the thistle green 230TE. Keep an eye out on Ebay or the ‘Cars for sale’ section in the Gazette.

Keith Makin, via e-mail

‘Oscar’ with ‘his’ car.

INSURANCE HIKESDear Chris, Having had my 1992 190E Sportline insured on a dual car policy with Admiral and the ‘modern’ car element renewal being increased substantially, I approached Footman James for a quotation on the Mercedes, giving my membership number and the same details as for Admiral. My last premium with them two years ago was circa £250.00

FJ’s quote was £1,333-plus! So I asked Admiral for a single vehicle quote and renewed at £327.24, with an agreed value of £8,000.00 (mint condition and 36,000 miles), ie just over £1,000.00 cheaper! I spoke to Footman James who said they only use one insurer who has `toughened up` on classic insurance significantly.

What’s the point of ‘approved insurers’ schemes’ when this is the treatment we get. My advice is to shop around on comparison sites to check any renewals. Best wishes, Arthur Bayley, Tyldesley

Editor’s note: I referred this to Footman James who responded, ‘Firstly we would like to apologise to Mr Bayley for the experience he has had with us on this occasion and we would stress that this is not the usual high level of customer service that clients should expect from Footman James.

In this case we would have been able to offer a competitive quote had the appropriate steps taken place and we have since arranged a phone call with Mr Bayley to apologise and to explain the situation in person.

At Footman James we invest heavily in training and quality control to ensure we deliver a good level of customer service and so that instances such as these are rare and not repeated’.

RECOMMENDATIONS ENDORSEDDear Chris,I would like to offer a couple of endorsements, each to companies already in the Club Directory’s ‘Good Garage guide’. From ‘General servicing and repairs London – South’ Christian Cars did a superb job rectifying an ECU problem which was affecting the idling speed of my R107 SL. They sourced a specialist who could refurbish the ECU and did a temporary fix so that I could still enjoy my car while the ECU was away being fixed.

From ‘Soft-top repairs’ d:class Automotive Interiors, again on my R107, made an excellent job of replacing the three plastic windows in the soft-top which had gone milky and become crazed with age. The guys at d:class even made sure the stitching colours were correct for the roof colour.

Kind regards,Kevin Vince, via e-mail

Dear Chris,I am a very new Member and have just bought a 190E 2.6 from Mark Taylor of MTSV. I would like to add my recommendation to the two which already appear under the ‘Used car dealers’ heading in the ‘Good Garage Guide’.

Mark was an absolute pleasure to deal with and I am delighted with the car, bought sight unseen but exactly as he had described it.

Regards,Roger White, via e-mail

PARTS RECOMMENDATIONDear Chris,I write in praise of Mercedes Mark Mercedes-Benz classic parts in Ledsham, South Wirral. The principal Mark is well known to many in our Club. He has never ceased to amaze me with the variety and depth of parts he has for our favourite marque.

ROSEMARIE’S RAMBLINGS

20 • AUGUST 2019 • www.mercedes-benz-club.co.uk

Rosemarie’s ramblingsby Rosemarie Maslin

It only seems a short time ago that I was thinking about what needed to be done to get our cars in shape for the coming

season and the nice weather. Now, as I write this, we are approaching the end of June and I’m still waiting for the nice weather.

I don’t think we have attended any event this year where I can say the weather was nice, not necessarily nasty, but a little warmer and maybe just a hint of sun would have been good. Last month I said a little about out trip to Italy and the Mille Miglia and, whilst it never stopped us from having a great time, on at least one day in Luxembourg, France, Italy, Austria and Germany it rained, and in Germany it was

torrential rain, so the UK has certainly not been alone in summoning up the rain gods.

At the Donington Historic Festival at the beginning of May there was no other word for it but cold. Unlike many race tracks Donington was not previously an airfield, but it did not seem to offer much protection from the wind.

Three days after we returned from Donington we set off on our Mille Miglia European Tour which I have already written about. From Germany, our return to the UK was via the Netherlands and there the weather was great – sunny with temperatures in the upper 20s degrees C.

However, on returning from the

continent to the UK we were treated to more consistent rain, which was a little unfortunate because Peter needed to prepare the coupé for our entry in the National Concours at Milton Keynes. With only a small garage and persistent rain it was not to be, so we turned up at Milton Keynes, the day before, in the rain, with a less than pristine entry. On the day we escaped virtually rain-free, with many owners also braving the elements to turn out their beautiful cars for us all to see. The fact that Mercedes-Benz UK once again opened its offices (and car park) for this event made for another wonderful day for those exhibiting and those coming along to see a superb selection of cars.

That’s my whinge about the weather which is after all a very British preoccupation, but may I expand my whinge by including my thoughts on how we are polluting our planet.

One-use plastic and food wasteAfter the BBC’s Blue Planet I think nearly everyone must be aware of the vast amount of plastic that is polluting our lives and the animals we share our world with. It occurred to me the other day as I was watching Peter undertaking an annual service that virtually every liquid we car owners buy comes in a plastic container. Screen-wash, anti-freeze and particularly engine oil, gearbox oil and automatic transmission fluid could all be delivered in metal containers. It may be a little inconvenient hunting around for oil that’s supplied in metal containers, but we found some, made by Comma, quite easily and I’m sure it won’t be too hard to find Castrol or Duckhams in tins. We car owners receive a lot of bad press so let’s take one small action and buy oil supplied in tins. You never know, if enough of us do it we may one day put economic pressure on the oil companies to reduce their dependence on plastic!

Interestingly, not only plastic, but food waste is not without its impact on helping to destroy our planet. Can you believe that we throw out 20 million tonnes of food each year and that is an equivalent volume of greenhouse gas to the annual emissions from 3.5 million cars.

OK, let’s move on and discuss what’s interested us this month and what’s hopefully going to interest us in the coming months.

Rob writes... by Rob Halloway

Fantasy garageFrom time to time I play the game where I choose, in some fantastical world where money and availability is no object, what my dream car garage would include. That much is relatively ordinary for us car enthusiasts. Fortuitously, earlier this spring I stumbled across a fantastic collection of cars – in real life and in the metal – that knocked even my imagined ultimate collection into the weeds.

I was attending a meeting at Silverstone about summer events, and colleagues from our Formula One team and Classic department were in town for some kind of PR launch, or so I thought. Our meeting was a good one – full of great ideas and lots of support to do things that, by the time this Gazette has been published, will all have happened.

As I was leaving for the short trip back to the office, someone said: “Have you taken a look at the cars downstairs? You’d love it.” No, I hadn’t – I didn’t even know there were cars downstairs. So I shambled down a level, and I’m glad I did. I was utterly floored by what I saw.

Arranged in front of me were dozens of amazing cars and items, from the 19th century

After 20 minutes of wedging-in, Rob found his ‘happy place’ in this SSK at Silverstone – he would have been unable to steer it though. Classic Centre colleague Jurgen Wittmann is with him.

The cars at Silverstone included every Mercedes F1 model from 2010 to 2019 – the first time they have ever been displayed together. A glimpse into the future – the Formula E car.

I have been a Member of the Club for a number of years, but sadly my participation in Club events has been

limited for a variety of reasons, but finally I am pleased that both my W208 CLKs are now finished and I am looking forward to getting them out at as many shows as I can. I would like to share a little bit of the story of these CLKs and how different the two journeys have been.

V598 NAM CLK230 cabrioletI have had this car for four years and it’s a joy to own. It was manufactured in March 2000 and had been company-owned its whole life before I bought it. It is sitting at 105,000 miles and has never failed me in my ownership, nothing has ever broken and the bodywork is immaculate. All I have done is service it correctly and it should be enjoyed for many years to come.

This was my first Mercedes and it made me fall in love with them. I originally bought it as just a short-term, fun car. I have the original delivery receipt from when it was a company car on contract hire for the first three years of its life. It did 57,000 miles in those three years and then 35,000

Cars of the month

If you would like your car to be a Car of the month, please send a good photo (conventional or digital) and a few details to the Gazette Editorial Office, 30 Scotgate, Stamford PE9 2YQ or [email protected]

Mike Callender writes: ‘I’ve always been a fan of sports cars and my friends agree that when we owned our used MGAs, Triumph TR6s and Austin Healeys in the 1970s they were the cars of their day and the affordable sports cars we lusted after, were proud to own, drive and impress the girls with! Those ‘top down days’ are remembered with affection and we forget the breakdowns, the rust, draughty hoods, poor heaters and the complaining girlfriends!

Nowadays we are more discerning and expect more from our cars. They must be comfortable, reliable, perform well, be weather-tight, have good heaters, air-bags and safety features, have sound systems with Bluetooth options, have satellite navigation, electric windows, heated seats and offer great value for money.

It should be no surprise then that now, in my late 60s, with an undiluted passion for two-seat sports cars that, after joining the Club and chatting with Nicky Porter, I opted for a 2006 R230 350SL. Encouragement from Nicky might have had me seek

out the more powerful 500 model but I could see everything I wanted in the 350.

Indulgent? Certainly, but this is a great car, just 60,000 miles on the clock, well made, a pleasure to drive and it was bought for less than £10,000.

So, when my brother expressed an interest in making a similar indulgent ‘weekend/fun-day car’ purchase I suggested that he too should consider the 350SL. He did and managed to buy a similar 2005 car with just 80,000 miles for less than £7,000. The photo shows our two cars at an event in Wakefield.

These cars when new cost over £60,000. Both feel and drive as good as new and when compared to the 10-year-old cars we bought in the 1970s are superior, undeniable bargains. I’m aware that there are lots of well used, high mileage examples available in the various magazines and on the internet, but it is my opinion that many of these cars are seriously undervalued and that low mileage, well kept examples at these prices are certain to appreciate in value.

The Callender brothers can’t be wrong!’

From deep in the Archive

by the Archive Team

Members’ problems will attest (as an aside that man is a genius).

With this article set in wartime, the subject of shortages of tools, spare parts and other materials, to which we do not give a thought these days, were upper most in the mind of the author – and, no doubt, his readers.

Thus, at the beginning of the article, the author advises his readers who were eager to overhaul a vehicle, to ensure that they had or were able to access the essentials – a strong bench, a hefty vice, heavy and light hammers. He also advised access to a good range of spanners – ring spanners, box spanners and sockets – as well as a small blow-lamp, taps and dies, a soldering iron – if electricity were available a small electric soldering iron – gear/hub pullers and valve spring compressors.

The list goes on and on and one is inclined to think, in the midst of war and the attendant rationing, how many of these things were available to the amateur mechanic and Autocar reader?

The article’s author then turns to the type of vehicle to which all the above equipment could be turned. He advised against expensive, rare cars where little or no spares back up could be expected to exist in the middle of a war. The running costs of these vehicles, in particular their high petrol consumption and high road tax, also made these cars an impractical subject for an amateur mechanic to overhaul for wartime use.

Instead he advised the choice of a popular vehicle that is ‘not so out of date’, so that it would be likely that there might be some spare parts available.

Then, in subsequent instalments, no doubt the intrepid Autocar reader is set to enjoy a near, never-ending marathon of overhauling suspension, engine, drive-line, electrics and bodywork of his chosen vehicle – all while wearing a collar and tie and his second or even third best suit.

We hope that this article will give hope to Club Members who think they are facing insurmountable difficulties with their Mercedes. It was all so much harder 78 years ago – and these days you do not have to be so formally dressed to sort out problems with your car!

The Mercedes-Benz Club’s digital archive is having new material added every month and now includes thousands of items. If you haven’t yet done so please take a look by registering. As part of the ongoing cataloguing process of the Ronald Johnson Collection, an interesting snippet

has turned up, which the Archive Team thought would appeal to the membership. This large collection was generously presented to the Archive by John Mack, son-in-law of the legendary Ronald Johnson, the founder of the Club.

One of the Archive Team – yes, the one who recently could not tell the difference between a W202 and a W203 in these pages – as part of his (lengthy) rehabilitation process, had been deputed to catalogue Ronald Johnson’s large collection of reference books. It was thought that the heavy lifting would be good for him and there was a faint chance that he might learn something from being in close proximity to so many motoring books.

One of these elderly tomes contained a loose cutting from The Autocar of January 10 1941. Entitled, ‘A Wartime Winter Hobby: Reconditioning an Old Car’, it excited the interest of the Archive Team

Car care in very different times.

in that we all thought that reconditioning an old car would be the last thing on the mind of the average Autocar reader at that time. It was subtitled: ‘How the amateur mechanic may turn a neglected chassis into a serviceable vehicle for present use’. It was a big subject – even for a series of articles, of which this was part one.

The initial article was illustrated by pen and ink drawing of a clean shaven, solid citizen, with a short back and sides haircut complete with mandatory Brilliantine, jacketless, but wearing a waistcoat, a collar and tie, with the sleeves of his white shirt sensibly rolled up. He was busily engaged in what was obviously his shed or garage using a die to cut a thread onto a piece of rod.

The Archive Team thought that, while there was no direct reference to Mercedes-Benz, many Gazette readers could relate to the subject of struggling in their garages or on their drives to keep an ageing classic car on the road – as many of Jeremy Stevens’ masterful Gazette articles sorting out

BTCC– round four, Croft

by Paul Kelly

Darlington would host the BTCC circus this time for the meeting at the nearby Croft circuit. Croft had

been totally resurfaced and people were saying it could be as much as five seconds quicker per lap in the dry than last year!Adam Morgan, Dan Rowbottom and Aiden Moffatt were hoping to improve their positions in the championship after some terrible luck and lack-lustre performances in their A-Classes.

The weather had been awful leading up to the weekend, the paddock and surrounding fields sodden. Free practice went OK. Adam was eighth in the tricky

conditions but fun and games soon followed in qualifying when there were five red flag incidents in the 30-minute session. The new surface was catching many out in the wet conditions, Rory Butcher coming off worst, destroying his Honda Civic and leaving his crew with much to do. Adam’s woes continued – he never posted a lap. Some others got caught out also. Every time Adam was on a hot lap the red flag came out! That put the Lancastrian way down in 28th. Dan ended up best of the Mercedes trio with 14th, his best to date. Aiden was 17th. Andrew Jordan grabbed pole in the BMW 3-series.

Race one From the start pole-sitter Jordan took the lead and was never headed, these new BMWs are really fast! During the opening laps some cars were weaving, trying to get heat into the tyres. It looked like a very fast formation lap!

Further down the order Adam was making good progress, up 10 places to 18th on lap six chasing lead Mercedes driver Aiden in 15th. The safety car came out on lap nine to recover two cars, racing resuming on lap 12. Jordan was sprinting away towards the chequered flag. Aiden finished 24th, Adam just out of the points in 16th. Dan was 20th, a faulty damper hindering his progress.

Race twoPole-sitter Jordan again headed the field away and led from start to finish despite having the maximum ‘success’ ballast on board! This is the second time this has happened. Even with the organisers apparently turning the turbo-boost down, losing them about 5hp, the new 3-series can still win. Hmmm! Enough of the dreaded BMWs, what about our lads? Well, Aiden and Adam were running 11th and 12th respectively, some useful points in the offing. At the flag Aiden was 10th, Adam 11th and Dan 21st.

Race threeThe reverse grid draw saw Tom Chilton on pole. It was wet, some drivers gambling that the track would dry and choosing slicks. As the lights went out Chilton and his Shredded Wheat Ford Focus took the lead. Aiden jumped the start and had to do a drive-through penalty. That left Adam to fight for points. Safety car time on lap four, with Jack Goff’s VW Passat stranded with broken rear suspension. Racing resumed on lap six, Chilton keeping the lead, just, from Josh Cook’s Honda and Jason Plato’s Vauxhall. And that’s how it stayed to the chequered flag. Adam managed a decent 9th place, Dan 17th. It looked like a rally-cross event, such was the state of the cars, covered in mud!

It had been a hard slog so far for the A-Class runners, we hoped the team could turn things around at Oulton Park, Ciceley Motorsport’s home race.Formation flying – Adam Morgan passes team-mate Dan Rowbottom in race one.

Could be rally-cross – Adam’s A-Class covered in dirt.

We can only be thankful that the weather gods once again looked favourably upon us.

As was the case in the last few years, the long-term forecast looked very good but as the Concours approached it became somewhat less promising. For most of the week leading up to the event there was serious flooding in places and on the days before some of our hardy competitors drove through monsoon conditions to get to Milton Keynes. Yet in Milton Keynes the sun came out on Friday afternoon and when we woke up on the Saturday event day there was bright sunshine. Although it did not last all day, other than a very short period of fine drizzle it stayed dry. On the day after the torrential rain returned!

The entry numbers were excellent this year but the variable weather did prevent some from turning up, including the 190SLs and, rather surprisingly, some R107 SLs – in fact one competitor turned out to be a ‘no show’ for the third year running! Maybe we might see him next year?

We had well over 100 cars competing and exhibiting, as well as a continual flow of spectators coming in and out, leading to full car parks and an overall record turn out.

go about their work on. The Club is always indebted to MBUK to be able to use these facilities and particular thanks are extended to Debbie Hull, Communications Director, for making this possible. Her support team all did a great job, both leading up to and on the day itself and a very special mention must go to Chloe Hawling who acted as our key contact and co-ordinated events on the day and made everything so easy for us. We were delighted that Debbie and Rob Halloway, Marketing Director of Mercedes-

Benz UK Cars and our Honorary Club President, were able to present the prizes.

Thanks are also extended to Rob for donating a range of models and books that he ‘found’ in a store, these were sold and the proceeds will be shared between the Club’s and MBUK’s chosen charities, the RNLI and the Willen Hospice. In all £600 was raised and a big thank you to everybody for their generosity and to Phil Reed and Andy Holmes who agreed to sell these models and books alongside the surplus Archive items

Here we go again! After the brilliant time we had at the Gordon Bennett last year (December 2018 Gazette),

the ‘Famous Five’ (Scenic Car Tours, who help organise our trips, call us that!) decided to book another trip, this time to the Jersey Historic Motoring Festival with a tour of Brittany at the end. To start with though we decided to go to the New Forest for a night’s stop over before travelling to Poole the following day for the ferry to Jersey. Well three of the five couples did. David and Sharron Thornhill were visiting Guernsey, Paul and Sheryl Crofts staying

with relatives in Bicester. Janette and myself, Ralph and Julie Miller, and Lynda and Stuart Mason drove down and we stayed at the superb White Buck in Burley. Ralph and Stuart went a day before to split the long drive south and visited the SL Shop. It was a bit damp in Hampshire when we arrived and we went to a local pub for a meal. I then got a call from Paul Crofts to say his wipers had packed up on his R107 SL and he wanted to know where the fuse box was located, as he had called out the

AA for assistance. The problem was just a faulty contact.

The next morning, after an excellent breakfast, we left the White Buck and headed out into the New Forest. As we had been many times cycling, I took us through the Rhinefield scenic drive, which starts at Brockenhurst accessed through a ford (thankfully not too deep!) The forest is famous for its diverse array of trees, including eucalyptus, but this particular

2020F1 has announced that its 70th year will start on March 15 in Melbourne, Australia, where the Albert Park circuit will also be celebrating its 25th anniversary of continuously hosting the GP. Rolex also confirmed that it will sponsor the weekend again, for the eighth consecutive time. The race has proved a successful hunting ground for the Mercedes team, winning four of the last six races, though Lewis Hamilton has only won there twice, once for McLaren and once for the Silver Arrows, in 2015. The rest of the dates for the new season are unconfirmed as yet, but Vietnam and a Dutch race are being added to the calendar, so a potential 23-race calendar looms.

CANADAF1 briefly left Europe at the beginning of June to head to Montreal’s Notre Dame Island Circuit Giles Villeneuve for the Canadian race. Qualifying saw Sebastian Vettel take pole in his Ferrari, a full 0.2 seconds ahead of Hamilton, whilst rear-gunner Valtteri Bottas had to make do with sixth slot. None of the other Mercedes powered cars made in into the top 10 starters, with the Williams qualifying line astern at the back of the pack, though they were boosted up a place each as a result of Kevin Magnussen crashing his Haas on his final qualifying lap.

Hamilton went on to take a record breaking seventh win at the Canadian track, Vettel finished first on track but, whilst battling Hamilton earlier in the race, was judged by the stewards to have impeded

the British driver unfairly and was awarded a five-second time penalty for his efforts, gifting Hamilton the victory. A strong home performance from Lance Stroll in the Racing Point saw him finish in ninth place, scoring valuable points for the Mercedes powered team, whilst the Williams team was at the rear of the field, with Robert Kubica finishing last and three laps down on the leaders, team-mate George Russell two places in front.

WILLIAMSAs we went to press rumours emerged that, as part of a major shake-up to restore its form, the Williams team may ditch the Mercedes power-train for 2020, in favour of the Renault engine. Though the Renault engine is running competitively in the McLaren, it’s unclear why at this stage this makes sense to the Grove-based team. Despite winning nine constructors’ titles, it’s 22 years since its last win, with its form slowly declining to a low point in an awful 2018 and an an even worse 2019 campaign so far.

FRANCEBack in Europe things were back on course for the Mercedes team as Hamilton qualified on pole and went on to an impressive lights-to-flag victory, with Bottas duelling with the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc to take second place. Meanwhile Vettel qualified a poor seventh, recovering two places to finish in fifth slot. Once again the Williams propped-up the rear of the field, whilst the Racing

Points finished just out of the points in 12th and 13th places.

AUSTRIAThe last day of June rounded off a busy three-race month for F1, at the Red Bull Ring. Qualifying saw Leclerc grab pole for Ferrari, with Hamilton lining-up fourth behind Bottas; once again none of the other Mercedes powered contenders made it into the top 10.

It wasn’t to be Ferrari’s day though as, two laps from the flag, Max Verstappen overtook Leclerc – banging wheels as he did so – to grab a win for Red Bull. The stewards took a close look at the incident – encouraged strongly by Ferrari – but in the end decided that it was a ‘racing incident’ and the result stood. Bottas finished third, whilst a similar late overtake by Hamilton on Vettel saw him add to Ferrari’s misery and take fourth place. Verstappen’s victory was the first for the Red Bull-Honda partnership and Honda’s first since 2006. After the race the jubilant Dutchman said that following a poor start he felt his race was over, however, after the first pit-stop things “just came together.” Once again, neither Racing Point nor Williams scored points, with Perez just missing out, finishing 11th.

CHAMPIONSHIP After nine championship rounds, Hamilton led the drivers’ title race with 197 points, 31 points ahead of team-mate Bottas, whilst Verstappen was holding third place a further 40 points adrift.

Mercedes also led the constructors’ race with 363 points, a full 135 ahead of Ferrari. Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull have each won the fastest-lap award three times apiece, Hamilton having only claimed this extra point once, in the Spanish race.

This year we were guests, at Blenheim Palace, of Klasyczna Polonia whose members are big SEC fans. Combined SEC numbers were about 35, surely the biggest SEC gathering in

the world. Show-stoppers were a 500SEC cabriolet kindly brought by Nicky Porter, fresh from trimmers d:class, flaunting a pristine black leather interior. Its electric hood, in Nicky’s words, “Opens slower than Tower Bridge”. Not seen since the 2017 SEC Day was the ex-Ayrton Senna 500SEC, marking the 25th anniversary of his tragic death. Flanking it were the ex-Rosberg and Mansell SECs, the latter courtesy of Mercedes-Benz UK. MB also lent the latest S63 AMG coupé – its exhaust system’s snap crackle and pop noise settings thrilled spectators.

It can prove expensive, but I have always felt that if a job is worth doing it’s worth doing properly. One case in point

was when the dreaded rust made another appearance on my 280SE 3.5 coupé, this time in the front cross-member.

The photo on the left shows the extent of the rust that I could see and my first thought was to cut out this section and have a patch welded in. This would however go against my maxim of ‘Do it properly’, hence I decided to replace the whole front cross-member. Unfortunately it is no longer possible to obtain this part from Mercedes-Benz (in fact it’s two parts, a front and rear section that you spot weld together) so the hunt was on for an alternative after-market supplier. I found two possible sources, no surprise they were both in Germany – Niemöller and DBdepot. Both were about the same price and for no particular reason I plumped for Niemöller and the parts arrived in a big box within about seven days and were reasonably well-made pressings.

by Peter Maslin, photos by Phil Smith

What do you do when the rust bug makes an appearance?

Having sourced the parts the hunt was on to find someone to carry out the work and here the Club Directory’s ‘Good Garage Guide’ was a great help, pointing me in the direction of P J Smith whose premises are in Bedford, not too far away from where I live. After talking to Phil at P J Smith we agreed an action plan and a start date that was only a couple of weeks away as he considered it would not take too long.

In my ignorance I thought this would be a simple case of removing the bumpers, radiator and electric fan, cutting out the old front cross-member and welding in the new one. No such luck, it was also necessary to remove the front wings, sill trims, oil cooler, headlamps, inner wing components and horns. Not only was it necessary to cut away the front cross-member, but also some other rotten chassis panels, fabricate new ends and weld them in position ready to accept the new cross-member.

The next job was to clean up the edges of the new cross-member panels before the

Peter Maslin’s 280SE 3.5 back together ready for the summer.

This is where it all started with the initial rust hole.

ANGLIA – NORTHStody Gardens, Norfolk – Sunday May 12

In an English country gardenTucked away down a country road or two in Norfolk, close to a village called Melton Constable, is a symphony of colour called Stody Gardens, which is so well hidden not even the locals on our visit knew it existed. But we managed to find it and thoroughly enjoyed our day!

This event began, like so many of ours, in a pub car park. In this case the Explorers Bar at Brinton, which not only had a very substantial car park but organised its staff to come in early to serve all the teas and coffees that our thirsty Members required.

The Club quickly took over the car park, which became a social occasion and a tourist attraction in its own right, with braces of R107, R129 and R230 SLs plus a single Pagoda belonging to Paul Jobling with his partner Jay.

Stody Gardens was a popular event with our lady Members. Liz Denny was driving her lovely R230 SL350 with her mum Janet as co-pilot, both looking forward to a very fragrant day of azaleas and rhododendrons. R129s are getting very collectable now and Dave Mellow’s white SL300 was a stunning illustration of why this is happening. These cars are not only extremely attractive, they are still a practical form of transport 20 years on.

The long and winding roadCoffee cups emptied and tea pots drained, it was time for Regional Officers Roger Hinton and Paul Jobling to shepherd over 30 cars through the short journey on the tiniest, winding roads that Norfolk could offer.

Once we arrived at Stody Gardens we were part of a very large contingent of classic cars, including the Porsche and Triumph TR clubs as well as a number of local classic car clubs and individual entries, with the Mercedes-Benz Club bringing the numbers up to around 350 cars.

Do the locomotion However, the two cars which took pride of place were not Benzes, they were a pair of Stanley steamers – powered by hot water! What was more amazing was the fact this pair were driven to the event, literally under their own steam. Roger Hinton had a conversation with one of the owners of these fascinating pieces of automotive history who said that his car was still capable of 90mph and there was so much torque that it could maintain the same speed on a steep hill as on the flat.

Our Club put on a very impressive display. SLKs were out in force, with Roger Hinton’s SLK230, John Durrant’s SLK320, Nigel Postles’ SLK32 AMG, John and

Carol Naylor’s black SLK200 and Chris Tansley’s SLK320. Simon Carter’s red R107 300SL was looking amazing in the glorious sunshine which was helping to further light up the day, as well as Alan and Doreen Betts’ black R230 SL500. Older cars were represented by Paul Jobling’s 280SL Pagoda and Peter Fisher’s similarly pillar box red W123.

As the sun shone down, more and more people decided to investigate Stody and what they discovered was both bigger and better than they could have imagined.

I’m Henery VIII I amStody Hall is an imposing white Victorian mansion overlooking a beautiful lawn, all of which is encased by walls of wonderful foliage and the intensity of the colour really had to be seen to believed.

What was particularly interesting is that Stody Hall used to be part of the Blickling Estate, famous for being the birthplace of Anne Boleyn. One couldn’t help wondering if that historically memorable but unfortunate lady once trod some of the more ancient paths we were taking that day.

Part of the beauty of this event was you could spend many hours simply wandering around. Everyone explored the water gardens, which made us think of what
